Why do Professional Bodybuilders need Gurus?
« on: April 05, 2011, 02:11:25 PM »
Arnold didn't have a guru..

Haney didn't have a guru..

Are today's pros just too stupid to figure out their own training and dietary regimens?

Maybe it has gotten so chemically complicated that it's all about the guru.

So complicated that they have to often times resort to having another man(guru) design their workout, cook their meals, plan out their drug intake and even charge the pro over 50% of their prize earnings?

i think it's a pedigree thing; the mere fact that they were "trained" by so and so would help placings.

kind of like you were a huge asshole if you didn't invest with Maddoff.  ::)

I think there is something to this.  In addition, the guys of yesteryear did have gurus, but they weren’t called that.  It was simply a friend who mentored you and gave tips on juice, diet, and exercises informally.  No one becomes a pro bodybuilder “on his own.”

From wiki: A guru (Sanskrit: गुरु) (Gurmukhi: ਗੁਰੂ) is one who is regarded as having great knowledge, wisdom and authority in a certain area, and who uses it to guide others (teacher). Other forms of manifestation of this principle also include parents, school teachers, non-human objects (books) and even one's own intellectual discipline.

I suppose that would also include GOP PACs, Rush Limbaugh, and Glenn Beck.    ;D

I wonder who was Arnold's guru..

I mean, whoever claimed that title could have made millions in the industry throughout the years.

Theoretically Gironda could fit into the guru concept.

I think whoever (publically) claimed that title would find themselves silenced, in some way.

..or maybe Arnold has purposely asked him to keep quiet as to not distort his image of being all-knowing in the realm of bodybuilding?

Was Ty "Ropeman" Lee's guru, or just a workout partner?

was that ex con that Levrone worked out with a guru (Kev said he had to split from him) or merely a workout partner/trainer?

Dillett have a guru prior to Chad, did Nasser prior to Chad?
Shawn Ray was a loner, did all his prep, and didn't take as much (or all, any ) of the exotic stuff...

But, Joe McNeal did get Flex peeled, and did help Dex...

I think Pollux is the one to really ask, but Arnold was introduced to the D-bol by some German 'mentor' and then further kept in thongs by some English 'fitness' fella, before Joe came along.

Waiting on Pollux...

Guru, pimp, Father Figure---he was all, rolled up into one...if only more people were like that.

Weider Training Principle #1:
Find a already well developed, square jawed man, who is starry-eyed. Bring him over to the US, and claim that you trained him. Put him on magazine covers, say he uses your supps, rig the contests (especially your own) so that he wins, develop stories about him, take millions of pics of him, so that 30+ yrs later, they are running "never before seen pics. A empire is grown literally "overnight".

It's ironic you mentioned Haney , most guys just can't seem to tie it all together on contest day , Haney was one of them. He said he always looked better the day after a contest of before. Haney said himself his last contest ( 1991 Mr Olympia ) was the only contest he peaked the actual day of the contest ( and retired on-top at his career best )

Samir Bannout was another guy who always had problems and he tied it all together in 1983 for the big win but it was a constant struggle before and after. Haney mentioned when Yates started to dominate that he knew his body and what worked for him and I guess that's part of it , learning what works for you for trial and error

Flex Wheeler was lamenting to Dorian one year how he wanted to look like the previous year and he couldn't duplicate it , Dorian asked what was he doing different from the previous year and Flex said some to the effect " i don't know , I can't remember " Dorian couldn't believe it , Dorian was just the opposite he was methodical in the way he prepared his food , weighed it to the gram , was a fastidious record keeper when it came to his work-outs , the entire year was devoted to contest day and he DID NOT deviate from it which separates a champion from a runner-up , Shawn Ray was like this

I think more guys should experiment with what works for them instead of relying on someone who can literally cost you everything , including your health.
