Wouldn't mind checking out your playing sometime... any chance of that happening? Vids? Tracks?

I know that you know your shit and you aren't fucking around. That's obvious by your name (just kidding)- obvious by your posts in the music threads.

I posted a vid on page 3 of this thread. Just a short clip of some wanking - legato and speed picking recorded my iphone a couple days ago.

I play the blues too.

My channel has some shitty recorded stuff too as well as some private band crap. Recorded stuff is always one take. No good quality stuff unfortunately as I don't have the time or patience...haha!

But does any of it sound any good? Do you make shitloads of mistakes?

No mistakes, and no time problems like some other posters here.. I practiced with a metronome for a good 5-6 years when I was younger (thanks J. Petrucci)  that's actually one thing that bothers me like crazy, people playing in and out of time, like the dude that posted the santana and dire straits cover earlier, practice with a metronome!!!

I was raised on the old school (not so much shred) but neo-classical rock/metal, I have a great apreciation for classical themes, arpeggios, fugues, etc. I don't play notes just to play them and be fast, there is rhyme and reason in what I play, I'm a huge fan of solos like this:

At 1:17 and 1:01

Yngwie Roads: You are good. You should form a band like Necrophagist, Sylosis or something, or maybe you have already?

My claim to fame was when Herman Lee from Dragonforce came up to me and said in his awesome weird voice "you are a good guitarist" after we supported them. I was 18 and thought that was awesome! Also played with Vader, but they were pretty grumpy guys.

I play a Jackson USA select SL1 Soloist, and shoot for At The Gates/Bodom/Ynwie/Opeth/Dissection type mixture of nordic widdly atmospheric mashup. I'll try and post a solo snippet, if I can upload it to a link. I'm not as fast as you, but I do have awesome feel and note choice, and still pretty fast.

Do you have any recordings of any band stuff you've done? Or like midi mess around shit with a backing?

I'm ok. Got 3 band offers in the last two weeks but I work 10-16 hrs a day so my options are pretty limited.

Fav band this week is actually Opeth but been listening to  E.X.P today, so that may change. I like the jazzy sounding stuff of Opeth, Cynic and early Megadeth.

Very cool about Herman Li. they come across as pretty funny guys. Vader would definitely be cool to open for.

Captain Equipose was it you who dissed Django Reinhardt earlier? He doesn't need defending by me or anything, but he makes all these SYmphony X /Petrucci guys look like the most nothingy soulless robotic guys imaginable, which in some ways they pretty much are. I don't think a Dream Theatre song has ever made me feel anything other than mild intrigue at how fast the main solo might be around the 6 minute mark - apart from 'live another day', which has a real tune and is pretty awesome.

I'm not trying to be negative and Symphony X have their moments and I like epic sounding classic stuff, but Django stuff is harder to play than the fastest arpeggio on earth, due to having feel and communicating something to the listener on a proper guitar. I bet John Petrucci would actually take his hat off and admit Django innovated more than any pro-tools shredder, Michael Angelo Batio certainly says this. It's not even a competition anyway but ....basically gypsy jazz is awesome :D!

DT does have some good songs but most seem bland imo, same with Symphony X. I actually prefer Pagan's Mind to both of those bands when it comes to song writing.

I don't know Cynic stuff, but yeah agree about Opeth jazzy stuff, properly interesting, mostly because he uses interesting notes outside of the regular minor scale, experiments with textures and clearly loves what he does. So what sort of band are you gonna go for if you do? You could be the lead guy for a Trivium type band and make loads of dollar, so many sh!t musicians around though, and depends on so much other stuff, you'd kind of need to be able to tour and be super into it and available.

Playing in time, playing out of time...it can be intentional too. People that are always playing on the beat make things sound mechanical and robotic. Real music should not sound like this. Unless you call anything with drum machines and more effects boxes than strings in an orchestra producing "music."

Being able to play correct time, as well as ahead or behind the beat is just as much of a form of art as playing an arpeggio from a low octave to a high octave. Can you guess which one is more over done than a Coleman Vs Yates thread?!

I've been happy just playing and writing on my own, but I'm getting the itch to play in front of a crowd again.  I may look for a few guys to put together a fusion band, or something like that. I'm jamming with a few friends doing some simple old school metal, but I get bored. I may look for a few guys to put together a fusion band, or something like that.  Do the odd weekend gig. We'll see.

This is Cynic.

I play 'around the beat' often. It's more interesting.

Yeah I mostly just mess about recording these days, but the whole crowd atmosphere thing is awesome and I miss it too. Well if you ever live anywhere near Bristol, England and wanna join a band with members of this band www.myspace.com/shadowlawmafia including the drummer, then let me know! haha

Cool vids guys. Yeah, I watched'em all while I'm working.

Christian, Left handed playing always looks backwards to me and throws me a little...haha. Getting your hands in sync just takes practice, as does any technique on a musical instrument.

Nice note choices warma your playing sounds mature. Makes me wanna do some vids myself.

I think you completely missed what I was saying, I wasn't talking about playing in different times (as in 7/8 , 3/4, etc.) I was talking about just being completely off as in sloppy or just not having a good sense of time and coming off or too early, playing in broken time is a totally different thing.

Cynic and bands like Atheist, Meshuggah, strapping young lad are insane, that's more math metal then anything
a lot of that stuff owes it's conception to Chuck Shuldiner of Death and is where Hoglan got big (he's one of the most insane drummer's in the world).

You guys are talking about Vader up above one of my band's opened up for them about 8,9 years ago in Toronto I was hanging with Peter afterwards, good guys.

This is one of the most fucked up, crazy solo's I've ever heard, LOL

this song is a clusterfuck of jazz, fusion, metal , prog rock, latin and who knows what else!

I guess you've never been in a studio, talk to any producer or engineer, their biggest pet peeve is guys playing off the click, then they have to spend hours editing the tracks afterwards to quantize and fix the sloppy playing, playing on the beat is the whole point when you're recording, lol

You really are a rock player, aren't you? I can tell just by how you talk.
For one, it was pretty clear as to what I said, Yngwie picked up on it, why couldn't you? Then in the second post you actually understand and contradict what you said above.

In my field, playing off the beat is what is requested. I've been in the studio plenty, and all of the people I perform with have the same opinion as I do for our music that we play.
If you have an engineer going through any stuff and using a program like ProTools to edit the time structure (not the measure as you said in your other post...I'm talking in relation to the beat...not in relation to 4/4 or 6/8 etc...) shouldn't be going through an entire song/solo to fix things. If he has to do that, then you hired the wrong player. Call someone else. Or the engineer is just a frustrated musician that likes to fiddle with toys.

Machines and ProTools can be good for certain things, but to edit something in it's entirety, if that is indeed being done, is not music. It's computer work just like photoshopping a photograph.

Many different musical styles require one to play ahead or behind the beat. It's pretty common.

i just started "playing" somewhat seriously about a year and a half ago.  i've been destroying all there is to respect about the guitar for about 11 years now.  when i learned about keys and chord progressions, my head about exploded.  when i learned the notes on the fretboard, i immediately improved by 300 percent in a week.  if i knew how much it mattered 11 years ago.   :'(

anyways, i always envy guys who know how to play.  i don't mean copy the solo in stairway, i mean really play.  my first day in college, i was raping some song on my bc rich mockingbird through my crate 15watt solid state amp, when this dude walks in, goes "you're out of tune", tunes my guitar and plays the star spangled banner (hendrix version) all the way through.  then he goes "just let me know when you need me to tune your guitar" and walks out.

i didn't plug in for the rest of that semester.

Just wait till you learn all the off neck harmonics and what notes they are!

best thing you can do when starting to play guitar is learn all the notes (in octaves) and where they repeat all throughout the neck, that right there will save you 2 years of bumbling around
