Playing in time, playing out of time...it can be intentional too. People that are always playing on the beat make things sound mechanical and robotic. Real music should not sound like this. Unless you call anything with drum machines and more effects boxes than strings in an orchestra producing "music."
Being able to play correct time, as well as ahead or behind the beat is just as much of a form of art as playing an arpeggio from a low octave to a high octave. Can you guess which one is more over done than a Coleman Vs Yates thread?!
I think you completely missed what I was saying, I wasn't talking about playing in different times (as in 7/8 , 3/4, etc.) I was talking about just being completely off as in sloppy or just not having a good sense of time and coming off or too early, playing in broken time is a totally different thing.
Cynic and bands like Atheist, Meshuggah, strapping young lad are insane, that's more math metal then anything
a lot of that stuff owes it's conception to Chuck Shuldiner of Death and is where Hoglan got big (he's one of the most insane drummer's in the world).
You guys are talking about Vader up above one of my band's opened up for them about 8,9 years ago in Toronto I was hanging with Peter afterwards, good guys.
This is one of the most fucked up, crazy solo's I've ever heard, LOL
this song is a clusterfuck of jazz, fusion, metal , prog rock, latin and who knows what else!
