There was an interesting article in the June 6, 1897 issue of the New York times that detailed Eugene Sandow`s diet verified by the Office of Experimentation in The Department of Agriculture.

His diet was extremely Carb Heavy at 502 grams. Overall calories per day for him were 4462 including Beer and Cigarettes and Ice Cream and Cake and Butter and Wine and Bread Pudding :)

The Department of Agriculture also calculated the diet for regular laborers, children and students etc...

We find that their average caloric intake in 1897 was certainly  higher than todays purported average intake which is quite interesting.  Clearly their entire lifestyle was different and much less sedentary.  Some may find this article as interesting as I did.

Feel free to quit reading at "he died of a stroke at age 58"

Sandow died in London on October 14, 1925 of a stroke at age 58.[1][11]

He was buried in an unmarked grave in Putney Vale Cemetery at the request of his wife, Blanche. In 2002, a gravestone and black marble plaque was added by Sandow admirer and author Thomas Manly. The inscription (in gold letters) read "Eugen Sandow, 1867-1925 the Father of Bodybuilding."

In 2008, the grave was purchased by Chris Davies, Sandow's great-great-grandson. Manly's items were replaced for the anniversary of Eugen Sandow's birth that year and a new monument, a one and a half ton natural pink sandstone monolith was put in its place. The stone, simply inscribed "SANDOW" (written vertically), is a reference to the ancient Greek funerary monuments called steles.

Proof?
Where is the proof that his diet killed him?

Kurt Vonnegut had a much worse diet and didn`t even lift, yet out lived Sandow.

yeah and also 254 grams of protein, that's a lot. besides, didn't he exercise pretty much all day errday? 4400 calories isn't really *that* much, i could routinely eat 5000 in my dirty bulking days without breaking a sweat.

also the effects of alcohol and cigs on muscle growth are grossly over-exaggerated.

also, all you guys saying he died at 58, considering the average life expectancy back then was around 50, i'd say he did pretty damn well.

This does not make any sense actually because the MAX LIFESPAN has not changed much at all since then.

The Average Life Span was lower back then due to the average being skewed by diseases such as Small Pox and death of of women during child birth, deaths at child birth, and infant death.  This brought the Average Lifespan down incredibly.  The MAX Lifespan though has changed very little.

Yep...I guess it boils down to genetics..right? But in sandows day, training was much different, much harder. Things come around back in full circle, like back then, people are doing more full body training. Do you actually think he trained for specifically bodybuilding they do now or even back in the 40's or 50's? Hell no. Much like crossfit, they had very little idea on what to do, however, they did know that whatever they were doing (mostly strongman stuff, gymnastics, etc) worked. Also, I think I read somewhere Sandow was not that big of a man. Again Adam..genetics

Genetic predisposition brought on by lifestyle, cigarettes and diet. As few as 1 to 4 cigs can doublet the risk of stroke and high sugar consumption will cause inflammation of the arteries. He was a walking time bomb. Being lean is no indication of health Adam!,,,,

Article:
Human Lifespans Nearly Constant for 2,000 Years

But the inclusion of infant mortality rates in calculating life expectancy creates the mistaken impression that earlier generations died at a young age; Americans were not dying en masse at the age of 46 in 1907. The fact is that the maximum human lifespan — a concept often confused with "life expectancy" — has remained more or less the same for thousands of years. The idea that our ancestors routinely died young (say, at age 40) has no basis in scientific fact.

No way he ate 4500 daily. It's very simple to figure out how many calories he had to eat to maintain and how much exercise per day to burn off the excess.

He did.  The average person back then was eating 3000-4000 plus calories (more than what people eat today actually on average).  They were moving a lot more and doing a lot more.  No sitting around.

Check out the Diet Recommendations from the USDA based on average diet in 1909.  MUCH higher everything than now.  Average woman was supposed to get 90-110 Grams of Protein and 2400-2700 calories with only light activity.

eatless and be weak and lean

eatmore and be strong

its near impossible to eat just the right amount and have the best of both worlds , these threads are funny though they bring out the experts

You can easily find maintenance and adapt to a maintenance amount which will allow you to eat the most possible food without any negative weight gain (fat).

Or you could just make sure you are active and not over eat.  The only excuse for obesity is gluttony and laziness.

Men bodyweight x 15 maintenance cals. Women bodyweight x 14. Just a rough estimate pending on activity.
