What kind of sport is bench pressing? Take a big fat guy and have him arch his back with a wide grip so he can push a bar for a 12 inches of range of motion with bench shirt that is so stiff he can't get his arms down. I want to see that same guy take a 315 pound bar bell off the floor and put it over head. I bet he can't do it. This kind of nonsense is just phony strength.

X2.

darts has more honor ffs.

Are you illiterate? You're acting as if someone here said benching and strict pressing are part of their training cycles. Should I reply with an equally stupid response saying powerlifters don't incorporate snatches and clean and jerks? No... because that would be as pointless as your post.

I said elite weightlifters have crazy pressing strength because they do.

Here's a push press. Front delts and triceps are heavily involved in this lift as with all pressing movements.

Deadlift yes, but front squat a2g and ohp? No. But nice try.
A powerlifter lacks not only the skill/technique but also the athleticism, power and explosiveness to snatch and clean and jerk.

Fact of the matter is elite Olympic weightlifters would fare far better at the bench than elite powerlifters would at the snatch or clean and jerk. Make excuses all you want I don't care but facts are facts.

Weightlifters > Powerlifters

that's like saying elite football players are better at the bench than elite bench pressers are at throwing a football. no shit dude, the latter is a HEAVILY skill based event, the former is pure brute force. powerlifters have far stronger muscles, olympic lifters are far more coordinated and agile. it's really that simple, and using how good one would be at the other is unfair because the bench can be done with ZERO skill. it might not be an optimized lift, but just to press a barbell from your chest to lockout needs absolutely no "practice" in order to successfully complete the lift. that is far from the case with olympic lifting.

olympic gymnasts, on average, can bench double their bodyweight on the bench despite not training it. why? benching requires fuck all in terms of coordination. if you have strong triceps/shoulders and your chest isn't completely atrophied, you can bench a lot of weight. it doesn't matter when the last time you sat on a bench was. i hadn't done a bench in a few months and a while ago just to fuck around i hit close-grip with a full pause 275x3 weighing 200lb.

by the way, the funniest part of all this? i do olympic lifting, and i follow guys like klokov on youtube. i heavily prefer oly lifting, i find it a more enjoyable and athletic pursuit (i actually do outlaw crossfit), so your blabbing at me about oly lifting like i don't know who these guys are or how strong they are (did you miss the part where I mentioned klokov presses?) is kinda funny. i just get annoyed when people compare strength sport A to strength sport B as though the lifts are on an even keel.

FWIW, here's benedikt magnusson, a guy who NEVER olympic lifts, power cleaning and pressing 375 just fucking around.

Just plain wrong on multiple levels. If you have a point its buried deep in stupid. Read it over and over again until it sinks in. I can't be bothered with you. You've shown in other threads as this one to speak without knowing and i find that very annoying. Because of that I just can't you seriously.

btw - benedikt magnusson is also a strongman. Nice example for powerlifters...really relevant. And know that there are elite female weightlifters who could clean and jerk the, weight he used. Double failure.

There are a decent amount of weak people on this board who have seen 3 videos of blimps pressing a thousand pounds with bench shirts on.  They've never been (are afraid to go) to a powerlifting meet and see somebody their weight compete, raw and seen how far the rabbit hole of strength goes at their level (regardless of juice) - but they sure as hell have "informed" opinions on the entire subject  ::)

As they are weak (both in mind and body), they need of a way to reassure themselves that their bodies are in some way functional - they convince themselves that:

1.  All powerlifting is folly
2.  They are fit
3.  If they got into a street fight, it'd be lights out for the poor fucker who picked them

Here is the reality:

1.  150 pound twinks on zero juice can out lift them
2.  About 3 weeks a decade, they are fitter and look better than their non training friends, who pull just as much - or more pussy.
3.  130 pound kids, 1 year into MMA training can beat them up

If you are reading this and you are weak, look like shit and you're not pulling more pussy that your non training friends - what the fuck are you bothering to turn up to the gym for? :)

Never competed as an Oympic lifter, but have as both a bodybuilder and a powerlifter, multiple times, each.

His quote: "no one in the world can do what I do"

These powerlifting idiot's have ONLY 1 hobby in life: taking tons of juice. Prior to the drugs; they are nobody's. Then they bury themselves in drugs. Then, somehow, they start to think that they are truly special, gifted athletes.

Take away the juice, and they are very ordinary people. Nothing special. Very insecure, people with addictive personalities and a need for attention. (At least with bodybuilding a dude needs to have a decent skeletal structure and follow a decent diet)

These "bench press" guys need to realize that the only sports that the world cares about are: NFL, NHL, NBA, Boxing, UFC, Pro Tennis, World Cup Soccer, PGA Golf, Olympics, Rugby, and maybe Worlds Strongest Man

The bench press goofballs, with their triple demin bench shirts are nothing special.

You have a point.  But if a guy wants to build his life around something like this and he is not hurting anyone, why do the cops need to swoop in exactly?  We have shootings in schools every other month in this country, cops raiding the wrong houses and killing people.  We have a government that violates international law and spies on and jails American citizens without a hearing.

Maybe you don't approve of what this guy is doing, but doesn't our nascent police state have bigger fish to fry?

I know a couple of power lifters (Samoans) and while they are strong as hell and gigantic, none of them can run a single mile without having to stop and rest.

that video makes me sick to my stomach, they have to parade out his crying family and baby pictures in the hope the obese, likely chain smoking judge will take pity on him for being so mentally ill and not give him a harsher sentence than a child molester or someone who robbed an old lady.

justice in this country is seriously fucked up priority wise, thanks to regan, biden and the other turd nuggets who decided to ruin peoples lives over victimless 'crimes'

just try him on tax evasion and not giving the government a slice of his pie, seriously...

Newsflash: Most people cannot run a mile without having to stop and rest.

This guy had the strength to press a poundage that eludes 99.9 percent of serious weight-training athletes. To achieve the extreme in absolute strength means letting its opposite attribute go largely to the wayside.

Why is it so difficult for some here to understand that individuals have individual pursuits. Clearly Ryan didn't value a fast-ran mile achievement. But he did a world-beating bench press.

As another asks, why does the government care so much about a guy who simply likes to build crazy strength? Ryan wasn't murdering, raping and stealing. Heck, he most likely wasn't being half the nuisance your average weekend club-goer is. Alcohol sold everywhere, ruining peoples' lives left, right and centre, but this dude hangs out in a gym lifting big weights and PUT HIM IN JAIL.  ::)

Why just 30 months?  Isn't he a repeat offender.  Some fools just never learn.  One less clown at the gym.
These guys are brutally delusional.  A group of fat guys shouting at them to lift the weight, 32 spotters...which don't really help if a hand slips on the bench, weight belts, weight suits, chalk, demented form on the bench....oh and many drugs to facilitate "their" achievements.  Nothing more not manly than this.
