Very few people actually own gold in any form. Many of those people who don't own any gold are already savages who would cut anyone else's throat for $10.
If it ever comes to the point where the dollar is actually totally worthless, ATM machines and EBT cards become useless, etc, those hundreds of millions of animals are not going to just go away and die quietly, nor are they going to want to willingly become slaves to those few who have gold. Those who have gold and anything else that would actually be of value in such a scenario will need to really be concerned for our own safety at that point.
The whole idea gold bugs have that they will be the new kings and everyone else will just willingly bow down to them if the shit ever really hits the fan is naive at best.
If we ever get to that point, food, water, ammo, and shelter will be what matters. If you can't eat it, drink it, or use it as a weapon, forget about it. Hygiene and being able to stay free of sickness and disease will also be very high up on the hierarchy of needs.
Gold will likely get more valuable the closer we get to that point. But if the dam ever truly breaks, it won't matter. Dollars would probably be more valuable then because you could actually use them for toilet paper.
I do use gold as an investment, but I don't fool myself beyond that.
