I will say this.

I hang with the "jacked guys" at my gym, as I am massive...point is, at about 30 years old, the conversation changes from "I'm gonna compete..thinking light-heavyweight."

To "I'm thinking of doing men's physique."  the younger set is all about it.
MASTERS MENS PHYSIQUE I DUNNO...

Masters Mens Physique over 50, Tall (6'0+) division. I figure I might be alone and therefore might get as high as a third place plastic trophy.

it takes what a year or two to build a mens physique body-not much of a challenge-they are a dime a dozen... every local show is full of hundreds of them..there is no wow factor and its fucken boring watching these little guys do there 1/4 turns in shorts..and there all doing gear and gh and diuretics same as bbers . ::)  -arnold would dwarf every one of them and make them look like babies in his prime-mens physique will never take over bbing-to me that is a complete joke statement..the olympia sells out because of bbing and the freak factor and the mens physique is held at the expo where it belongs ..take out the mens bbing and see what happens .lol..without mens bbing the in the ifbb both in amateur and pro..the ifbb would fail-period

big difference between old school bodybuilding physiques and mens bikini. Mens bikini guys think they are bringing back the old school but those guys would laugh at them.

you have a point...Reg Park and Reeves were strong specimens. Park was a Rugged Bodybuilder. These muscles were built with solid heavy training. In the 50s he(Park) built it with raw basics.

Yes agreed Ro. But it could just merge somewhere in the middle of what Bodybuilding is today.
It could become a more appealing look again and not that bloat unhealthy freak look it is now.

I blame the use of Insulin as the downfall of Bb alone. When Insulin was introduced "the Golden era" went straight downhill.

It definitely would be nice to see Bodybuilding finding its way back to an aesthetically healthy looking physique again.

Ro you still have the classic physique of what a Bodybuilder should look like! You really do look awesome

Johnny,

Look at Arnold's thighs. They weren't that big when compared to what we now have on the Olympia stage.

Arnold could fit into a regular pair of Jeans and/or even a suit. He looked like a well-built man, as opposed to a science experiment.

If bodybuilding continues the way it's going, it will forever be composed of a small, cult-like following. Bodybuilding needs to be taken to the next generation, it needs to survive and, in order to survive, it needs to make money by being marketable to the common masses.

The biggest I can see an IFBB-pro looking, without appearing like some type of steroid-induced mistake is exemplified by Richard Jones.

This (pictured below) is attractive to the mainstream. This is what can probably serve as the tipping point, before both women and men start to say that it's all "too much".

That's well past the tipping point. I remember people saying guys like Shawn Ray were "too much". And he's smaller than Richard Jones.

And, as I've said previously, I've had female cashiers make the same "that's gross" comments about magazines I've bought with Arnold on the cover. So, having bodies that resemble the Oak's physique is hardly a cure-all.

Looks kinda big to be labeled "classic" looks awesome, but not sure he fits the bill here... This is the problem.. The definition of "classic" varies so much from person to person.

Not to build a great one. The ones that people would look to. There are a lot of crappy bbers out there as well so argument doesn't make sense in that regard. Key word is local. I don't think anyone is talking about them but top of the line physiques (as zane, arnold, etc.were to aspire to).

I do agree with you on the "posing". Looks laughable.

I like more of a hybrid I think though guys like sadik are pretty ideal. A lot of muscleman guys look good and wbff.

No way man! I can't even buy jeans without having to get the waist taylored or it looks like I'm wearing diapers, lol! Arnold dwarfs me....

X2

Mens physique division guys have the right shape and taper but they are very small compared to Arnold.

I agree that he is no Arnold, but, then again, who is?

I think the kid has a good physique, one that is very marketable and can land him many sponsorship deals with the big magazines, supplement companies and even modeling/acting companies, not to mention the approval of the mainstream.

There is a certain perspective being missed here. Also, the issue of financial gain/return.

So many guys in the gym that never would have dreamt of competing are now standing on the "bodybuilding" stage. Most of them don't yet think of themselves as "bodybuilders" per se, because the behemoths are still around and very much in their faces.

The physique that is being brought to the posing dias is now more of an "attainable" look, making a lot of guys and gals believe that they can achieve this look without drugs....

Well, most "bodybuilders" know better. Many of the "men's phsique" competitors are boatloading PED's, just not the same ones or in the same fashion or for the same results as the behemoths. Unfortunately this new 'men's physique" is no more 'attainable' than a hardcore bodybuilder's... but the public doesn't know this.... yet.

There is still the issue of genetics, hardcore dieting, cardio, committment, did I say genetics? Oh yeah, and coiffed hair, veneers, board shorts that these guys go through great lengths (no pun intended) to get 'just right'

The audience that watches these guys has much more financial prowess. They are advertisers, promoters, people looking for book cover models, etc, etc... bottom line: people that have no interest in a "Colmanesque' physique...

These pretty boys, pretty men, girlie girls, etc, etc are taking up a majority of the NPC and IFBB cards now. Don't take much to get one and doesn't mean much once you do, but someone is making some money off of handing them out like candy.

Having someone walk up to you and say "Excuse me, can I hand out the trophies?"

"I have a Pro Card"

those words are now actually laughable. EVERYONE has their Pro Card now. Why?

Money. Money. Money.

75 - 100 guys in one class alone... the money is being raked in like never before.

It's a good time to learn how to "spray-tan" at the "hotel across the street" and actually get good at it. You will soon be in high demand, also raking in the profits.

Most guys at the gym have no clue who Ed Corney is, or Jose Raymond, Flex Lewis, Lee Labrada... but!

If you start mentioning Mark Anthony or Jeremy Buendia.... lol

Dude and dudettes... let me tell you: This shit is NOT LEAVING anytime soon.

It's sad. It's laughable. It's hard for those of us who can name-drop all the way to 1962 when Larry Scott was the first official winner of what was to be the Mr. Olympia.

These physique competitors run around the  gym with their entourage's saying "he's the next Mr. Olympia.."

they don't even bother to differentiate anymore.

Personally.. I don't really care. As a trainer, I have a lot more physique competitors blowing up my phone these days than bodybuilders, and yes, I ALWAYS differentiate between the two.

I doubt that. Gironda didn't win a show in his heyday,  notwithstanding that he did get marked down for being too ripped.
