While Joe was alive nobody questioned his Mr Olympia contest. Joe snuck in the back door in 1965 with a new idea to try to get the top guys to compete in his show and not NABBA in England.

He was eventually successful by the seventies and now the Mr Universe titles mean very little compared to the Mr Olympia. All those big titles relegated to not important since Joe's title became

THE big title to win in bodybuilding. Along with the Mr Olympia came the big medals and Sandow trophies. I have no doubt that they are cherished by all who win them. A nice sculpture for sure.

However, Joe was way off when he used that sculpture for first prize in his bodybuilding contest. Sandow was a figure from several generations before bodybuilding became something more than

a curiosity or sideshow. In the old vaudeville days strongmen were in demand and as it turned out a few of them had impressive physiques as well. Bodybuilding contests as we now know them

more or less originated in America with the Mr America title. That was a prestigious title back in the 1940s and 1950s. The Mr Universe title took off in England when Steve Reeves won in 1950.

In the meantime, Joe held the Mr Canada contest in Montreal then started to expand when he moved his warehouse to New Jersey. Eventually he held Mr America and Mr Universe titles. However,

the NABBA Universe was still the most cherished title according to the top bodybuilders including Arnold.

By the early 1960s the Mr America title became more controversial and they wouldn't let muscleheads or blacks win that title. This opened the way for Joe to have pure bodybuilding contests

and the rest is history. Larry Scott, Chuck Sipes, Harold Poole and Sergio Oliva won big titles solely on the excellence of their physiques. The idea of the Olympia was to have a contest that

the top guys could enter. One year Sergio won without having anyone to compete against him. He was that big and impressive. Then Arnold arrived and they battled for a few years until

something peculiar happened. Sergio was suspended for competing in an unsanctioned show. What happened to the ideal of having all the top guys compete? What a shame that was and

Arnold won year after year after that. The last time they competed was in Germany and many believe Sergio was robbed. There was no Sandow trophy for the winner in those days. Joe presented

Larry Scott with a silver plate. I think he had a crown one year as well. Prize money was something like $1000 and Arnold complained about that meagre amount. Schmoes were offering more

just to hang around Arnold!

Joe and Ben collected art and sculpture so it was no surprise when the Sandow was presented. This was almost out of Joe's fancy office. A replica and something special for the winner.

We wonder why a nice bronze of Steve Reeves wasn't used? There were some impressive bronzes of Steve available at the time. No doubt Joe took the most economical path re trophies.

Casting bronzes and finishing them is an expensive process. If you don't think so go and see what it would cost to have a bronze sculpture of yourself cast. It cost thousands of dollars.

When I look at the Sandow it is a nice bronze. Simple pose holding a vintage barbell that is seen only in museums. Is this what bodybuilding is all about? Not to me.

I look at the bronze of Dorian Yates and am impressed. Now that is a sculpture that represents modern bodybuilding and the superman. Sandow was never that. Will the IFBB upgrade

the trophy for the Mr Olympia? I doubt it. Maybe the pro athletes rep can make a representation on behalf of the top guys and fans out there? That would be a pipe dream.

Whatever Joe and Ben started with the IFBB and the Mr Olympia it seems to persist virtually unchanged over the years. I doubt there will be any significant changes in the decade ahead.

A big part of the reason vic was kicked off ironage was because he claimed Joe was a racist and cited him not putting Sergio on the cover of Muscle Builder as proof of that. vic was out of fucken line.

The Sandow is a coveted award that few have won. We won't be seeing many ever go on sale while the champions are alive.

That means there might be some available from estates of champions who have died. Larry and Sergio are gone. I don't think

Sergio's trophies would come up for auction because Sergio Jr would treasure them. I wonder about Larry's estate.

Does anyone here know what has happened to Larry's trophies?

^^
When Larry won, he only got a CROWN for both 1965 & 1966, the Sandow came later when Frank Zane got it in 1977:
"Larry Scott, the first Mr. Olympia was never presented with the Sandow on stage for his two Olympia wins, nor was Sergio Oliva for any of his three victories."
"It reappeared briefly as a trophy in 1950 and then was resurrected most gloriously of all at the Mr. Olympia contest of 1977."

I stand corrected. You would think that Joe would have awarded Sandows to all the winners, even years later as a nice gesture. Wait, that would have cost a lot of money so Joe wouldn't have done that.

Whoever sold it insisted his identity not be disclosed.

Over on RX they think it was either Ronnie or Frank who sold their Sandow. THE BEEF thinks Dickerson, he's mid 70's, his health is not the best, he has no kids to leave it to and he never made the money the current guys make.

Hi. Wondering if anyone has a reasonably priced Sandow statue for sale? Also, are there any 3-D printer versions of the classic Sandow statue that you could recommend? I would be looking for a statue 12 inches or larger in a material suitable for display to compliment my Louis Cyr plaster statue to demonstrate the contrast between the two. Thank you for any suggestions or information you can supply. All the best.
