The simple answer was that Rory, like Matt Mendenhall, could never get lean enough or dry enough to be successful in that era. Rory always seemed to hold a film of water that made him look smooth.

His shape and aesthetics were superb, but in those days you needed to be bone dry, striated, and vascular to win....and he was always just a few percent off.

Joe's gone now. We were friends.

He was extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of bodybuilding and bodybuilding history. I mean crazy knowledgeable- way beyond me or any actual bodybuilder I ever knew. He knew things like-

-what song Jon Brown posed to in the 1983 Nationals
-how much Chris Cormier weighed in the 1990 California
-the top 5 light-weights in the 1992 North American Championships

Just really bizarre things to know about bodybuilding. My friend Jason Mathis (the bodybuilding photographer and writer) lived with Joe for a few months when he first moved to California. He gave me bizarre reports.

yup. And he shows dogs now. At least last time I saw in I'm a dog show a few years back.
