heavyweight boxers
« on: March 16, 2017, 04:16:36 AM »
seems the ideal weight is not much more than 220, if they arent super tall i.e. 6'4" and up

n the golden era of boxng i.e. 70s to 90s most guys were 220 or less

before that some dudes were only a buck 85 or so ala Rocky Marciano

210-225lbs is ideal for those between 5'10-6'2ft.

Even the taller ones (6'4-6'8ft) shouldn't really be over 245lbs.

agreed

Ali was best at about 210, same with Tyson

one of my favs Mike Hercules Weaver was also best not more than 210

I think Holmes fought at bout 235 and he was 6'3" or 6'4"

You have to remember by 1988, the sanctioning bodies had reduced all championships bouts from 12 rounds to 15 rounds.

So after that, there was a little more emphasis on mass.strength and power,at the expense of endurance. I'm not sure that it made heavyweight boxing better, though.

Also, heavyweight like bodybuilders ,on the whole have gotten distinctly bigger, since the early 90's .And like bodybuilders, the athletes presumably would have access to the latest pharmaceuticals.

Now is the era of the giants at heavyweight like Joshua and Klitscko. Talking 6 foot six and over 17 stone these fuckers tower of the heavyweights of yesteryear. Personally, I think they should be in a super heavyweight category of their own.....let the giants fight amongst themselves!

I think boxing needs to have less weight divisions, not more, if it were to progress. A SHW division isn't needed since we've seen many times in the past, a smaller but highly skilled HW, is able to chop down bigger men.

UFC and cage fighting hurt boxing.any slob can wrestle around in a cage three or four times and then next thing you know he's fighting for a title.

Yes, they should be in a Super Heavyweight Division.

Heavyweight's should have have a cut-off weight so they at least stay relatively athletic and fast for hopefully more entertaining fights.

Shouldn't this thread have been posted under the your Darren Avery gimmick?

You're treading into Fallsview/Meta Physical territory with the similar gimmicks, if you're going to be someone else go all in and be committed to being completely different than your other accounts.

The height is more of a problem than the weight, 6'6 athletes....

Agree with this. Troublesome match making with these giants. There are enough of them to rob us of exciting fights with the great smaller men, but not enough good ones to stage fights amongst them.

Nothing to do with me.

Boxings dead not just because of da cage fighting but also the lack of characters. I mean come on Luis Ortiz, George Washington, Charles Martin all have less charisma than Derek Anthony in his present state.

Vitali would have stopped a prime Mike Tyson.

Mike always had problems with the big guys.

I seriously doubt it

Tyson would have easily swarmed him and got inside and hooked or upper cutted him to the canvas

Klitschko would've been trouble for Tyson. Tyson had trouble with taller guys that could move, and all of them weren't nearly as tall as Klitschko. Also many of the tall good journeymen fighters Tyson fought took him into the later rounds, where Tyson wasn't as good either. If he couldn't win early, he'd get increasingly more frustrated.

Klitschko would've been trouble for Tyson, and I doubt it would've been a good fight.

Best would be if you're a boxer and have 85-86 inch reach.

121" reach whilst being 5'2 and weighing 350 lbs would be a sight for sore eyes.

Probably so.  Vitali is a bad dude.  A real mean dude.  Great chin and tons of self belief.  If baby bro Had Vitali's chin and
heart, he would be the GOAT.

All I know is that the heavy weight division now is filled with bums. I can't even call them journeymen. It's an embarrassment. Americans won't pay to see these fighters but I know in Europe they are spending money to watch these bums.  Boxing is still exciting in the lower weight classes but the heavy weight is just a no talent division.

the last great heavyweights were probably tyson, holyfield, and lennox lewis

they were washed up long before the UFC went mainstream in 2005

Boxers today are the best the sport has ever seen.  The fights certainly aren't as exciting, but boxers today are much more refined on movement and defense.  There's a few reasons for this in my opinion.  First off, fans hate losses.  It seems these days boxers will do anything to avoid a loss because the seemingly get written off once they have an L which I think is dumb personally.  Second, most boxers simply aren't willing to stand and trade blows anymore.  They are already shortening their lives and we now know a lot more about what repeated head trauma does.  And lastly, it's a money game now.  It's about protecting yourself, making some money and getting out.  Guys like Tyson were so much more fun to watch, it's a shame I was too small to appreciate him in his hay day.....but, to say that all the fighters today suck means you don't know what you are watching when you watch boxing.  Guys today are so ridiculously skilled.  But once again, that doesn't mean exciting fights for fans.
