FUNK .... Where did you get this info?

I've known Gene since the mid-1960's when he used to MC some of the contests at the Embassy Auditorium in downtown Los Angeles.

I'll always remember Gene as being one of the best of the best individuals within the early days of bodybuilding.

About a year has passed since I last spoke with Gene on the telephone and we would always discuss the where-abouts and what-abouts of some of the old time originators such as Don Peters, Doug Strohl, Bill West, George Frenn, and many others whom most GetBiggers have never heard about.

On numerous occasions I have encouraged him to write a book about those good old bodybuilding days .... and now I'll be doing my best to make an attempt to see if he ever started before he passed away.

God Bless Gene Mozee!

He wrote alot of good articles/interviews in the magazines for decades.

I beleive Onlyme and Stunt mentioned him quite a few times years ago in that history and stories thread which is in my opion one of the top 10 ever long term threads on this site

Wrote for Ironman a lot in the last couple of decades. His claim to fame was coming up with a lot of 60's and early 70's bodybuilders and strongmen. He passed on July 4th, confirmed by Don Howorth, and Dave Draper.

Hey, NELSON! Thanks for what ya said above .... so this may be as good a spot as any to tell this short story .....

Once upon a time not too long ago I was at the Firehouse having lunch and happened to meet Tony Breznik who was most impressive due to his funny haircut and almost contest ready condition.

During that initial meeting I recommended that he get some magazine coverage before he flew back home .

But he was somewhat new to the bodybuilding scene and had no idea about whom to contact.

So I immediately made a cell-phone-call to Gene and asked if he could stop by to see this new kid on the block and arrangements were made to meet at Gold's Venice within the hour.

So Gene showed up and after the normal "Howdy-doos" he said something like , "Damn! I had no idea this guy would be this great!"

So he took his cell phone and made an immediate call to John Balik  who at that time owned IronMan Magazine to let him know that we would be in his office within the hour.

So we arrive at the IronMan Magazine office and everyone (including John and Mike) wee impressed and they asked Tony, "How long would it take you to be in contest condition?"

Tony says, "Give me five days!".

So five days later we show up on the beach beneath the approach to LAX for an early morning photo  shoot .... but it's to damn foggy, iso we pack up and head to the office studio and proceed with a six hour (could have been 4) photo session.

And Tony got the cover shot if I recall correctly and a four page spread in one of the upcoming issues.

Thanks to Gene and John and Mike and that great staff in MM office  .... and maybe even to myself of course.

Now I'll have to see if Tony is still into bodybuilding competition or what the heck he is now doing? He could possibly ever be back to hockey.

Anyway .... Thank you, Gene!

TONY's funny haircut .....

And thanks again, Nelson!

You've been around for a while then, Illuminati.

I believe my last conversation with Gene concerned Bill Smith whom I believe was hospitalized around that and I believe that it was a topic of conversation on this GetBig board.

Gene is probably the last of the remaining individuals who could tell you how those old time bodybuilding pioneers were doing and their present physical condition and where-a-bouts, but that list of individuals  has decreased immensely over the past few years.

I'm speaking about those who lived through the1950's and only one or two years into the 60's as active participants ..... which most likely doesn't even include our good friend WES due to the fact that he was way too young back in them good old days!!

BB, Thanks for those links to Gene's articles!!!
