The internet has made college a complete waste of time unless your field is highly specialised. You can learn anything now online.

You don't need to go to college to be successful. That being said, I strongly endorse two year tech or trade schools. For pretty much a bargain you can learn skills that get you off and running almost immediately while you pursue your fortunes. You don't necessarily have to stay in the field you graduate in but this keeps a roof over your head while you explore.

Anyone that says this hasn't done an acquisition, a merger, or even understands calculations on EBITDA margins.

There is no way I could grasp what I learned getting my MBA online. lol so stupid

He said in a field that is "highly specialized". M&A isn't exactly a run of the mill job, lol

Understanding management methodologies and financial/accounting principals (most of the time) require further education.

People like your friend are to be commended. Unfortunately, the majority of high school dropouts are so lucky.

As with anything: it depends.
If you are going to work a manual labor job or sales or in the service industry, then of course you don't need college. A trade school and/or apprenticeship is more than enough.
But if you want to work in finance, the medical field, and to some degree the tech field (to be a programmer/coder, of course not, but to be a researcher or go into management) then yes.
The nice thing about the tech industry is you can start at the very bottom with no formal education and most companies will actually pay for you to take courses and get accreditation.
The problem is a lot of management are old school and still look at a college degree as a must-have. For example, if its between a high school grad and a college grad, all things equal, they'll take the college grad. Not for all jobs, but this is just from experience. The first job I got was purely due to the name of the college I went to. I had no experience, only a college degree and the theoretical knowledge I gained over 4 years. That first job got my foot in the door. After that, my education has never been brought up in an interview (except for my current job because my manager went to the same college I did).

As does being a doctor, a research scientist, etc etc. But  the average John or Jane Doe  can make a significant paycheck doing jobs that require only a two year degree. A lot of 4 year graduates make diddly for salaries. Only in the high tech, management or  medical sectors do salaries start to merit the ridiculous cost of 4+ year college degrees. Even that is changing. My daughter in law got a two year nursing degree and now makes $100K a year at a local hospital at the ICU.

But you went to college Vince and are relatively successful, you have your own mobile home, several cars and even a Cadillac, multiple businesses and websites, you can handle angry customers when they want to speak to a supervisor and even won a bodybuilding contest trophy. Would you have made it that far without the college diploma?

True.  Of course there are those that are mega successful with no college but it is much less likely.  The type of person who is disciplined enough to start and run a successful business, learn skills online and out in the real world and self educate is usually the type of person who at least gets some college.  Most people who never go to college are the types that were lazy and unfocused in high school.  IF a person works hard and IF the person self educates and IF the person doesn't make big mistakes in their early 20's like impregnating women or committing crimes they can succeed but this usually doesn't happen with someone who was a failure in high school.

I'm all for trade schools and 2 year degrees. Statistically, people with the most education fair the best, career wise. On average, people with professional degrees earn 6x as much as people who do not graduate from high school

You need to have a skill to make a living.

Somehow you have to obtain that skill.

You need some innate smarts.  If you're a dummy you'll have a tough time.

There are many variables... Defining what "significant paycheck" is a big one.

Where the hell does she nurse and make $100k from two years of school?? My wife is a nurse practitioner and after 7 years makes $150k.  She started as a nurse, it takes four years here in Canada, also takes them about 4-5 years of practicing to make $100k. Which is way too low in my opinion. Free health care here brings in the finest of folks.

Enough to support his beach house within 5mos.

So much for your “few hundred” a month theory

She is a nurse in the Greenville (SC) Hospital system. Starting salary right our of school was $65K a year. She hit $80K in 2 years.  In the USA nursing and medical assistant jobs are a very lucrative profession. Becoming a physician's assistant with 5 years experience can get you upwards of $125K easily.

A significant paycheck of course is geographical region dependent, but I go by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. I own a tech company and have won several research grants so I have to justify all salaries in accordance with the BLS means. Making $60K a year is about the mean for tech people in a region like Phoenix, AZ (all skills and experience) and $100K is in the upper 5-10% range. So a significant salary is anything close to $80-100K.

Throw all that out the window if you are in sales and are good. I spend a lot of time in marketing and sales and making $150-200K as a good salesperson is very common. Degree not required.
