As with anything: it depends.
If you are going to work a manual labor job or sales or in the service industry, then of course you don't need college. A trade school and/or apprenticeship is more than enough.
But if you want to work in finance, the medical field, and to some degree the tech field (to be a programmer/coder, of course not, but to be a researcher or go into management) then yes.
The nice thing about the tech industry is you can start at the very bottom with no formal education and most companies will actually pay for you to take courses and get accreditation.
The problem is a lot of management are old school and still look at a college degree as a must-have. For example, if its between a high school grad and a college grad, all things equal, they'll take the college grad. Not for all jobs, but this is just from experience. The first job I got was purely due to the name of the college I went to. I had no experience, only a college degree and the theoretical knowledge I gained over 4 years. That first job got my foot in the door. After that, my education has never been brought up in an interview (except for my current job because my manager went to the same college I did).
