Advil killing bodybuilders!!!

I'm glad we're all smart enough to know that roids aren't the culprit of all these bodybuilder deaths and liver and kidney problems. So up the dose and hope for the most!    Hi Tom Prince

To some extent that's probably accurate, if you take a lot of painkillers, daily for a consistent period of time, you are wreaking havoc on your stomach, stomach linigs and kidneys, at least according to most doctor's I've spoken with.

I used to take Excedrin DAILY for about 12 years  ::)  It's a wonder I didn't burn a hole in my stomach.  I wonder if all the damage I probably did has repaired itself?

If you take too much of anything (i.e:an amount of something that is excessive) it will harm you.
Too much oxygen will kill you.
Too much food will kill you.
Too much water will kill you.
Too much advil then will probably kill you too.
So if Prince says too much Advil led to his current condition then why not just accept it. He is ultimately the man that knows. So why even bother with this thread.
I mean how many times do we have to see these types of threads?

How many....too many...

There's all kinds of info out there on advil damaging kidneys.  It can't all be BS.. It's not like Tom is the only guy out there saying it.  Maybe it did play some role to some degree.  If he was taking a lot of advil, it probably didn't help any if he were damaging them by one or more other means.

I think the real issue underlying all this comes down to the fundamentals of the bodybuilding 'lifestyle'. When I decided to take up bb it wasn't because here was a lifestyle that promoted health and wellness and stuff like that. It was because I could develop a 'look' that was to all intents and purposes 'excessive'. I mean isn't this really at the heart of bb especially now - and hasn't it really gone too far.
We basically want to be built like superman regardless of the cost.
And being male (in most cases) we are, especially when we are younger, apparently willing to risk pretty much everything to achieve that end.
I think it is actually rather heartening to hear some of you younger guys here actively promoting and defending your choice of being natural bb'ers. The whole excessive nature of this 'sport' I think is going to change - you can only take things to extremes for a certain period and then the cracks will appear as they already have. Too many guys are permanently screwing themselves for what - to look good on the outside (even that is debatable) while practically dissolving on the inside.

Advil is Ibuprofen, which similar to Aspirin and Indocin are a class of drugs known as Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (or NSAIDS).

They all work by inhibiting various parts of the Cyclo-oxegenase pathways (the pathway responsible for the inflammatory response in the body) to decrease inflammation.

Unfortunately the NS in NSAIDS, could also stand for NON - SELECTIVE...they have a variety of other effects including:

1) Disrupting the prostaglandin lining of the stomach inducing ulcer or preventing ulcers from healing
2) Inhibiting the primary hemostatic pathway (platelet function)
3) Affecting the Efferent glomerulus of the Kidney to increase BP and also can cause interstitial nephritis and allergic nephritis (progressing to renal failure) if taken in excess.

So basically, yeah, he probably did get renal failure from abusing NSAIDS and also from the diuretics he took....i'm not sure if the huge protein intake had an impact (but it certainly did not help).

Maybe Nicorulez could speak on whether the protein may have an effect.

In summary,

I'm glad we're all smart enough to know that roids aren't the culprit of all these bodybuilder deaths and liver and kidney problems. So up the dose and hope for the most!    Hi Tom Prince

Advil can cause kidney failure, folks!
of the causes of renal failure I saw and read about in 6 years of med school guess what. References to NSAIDS(group of drugs to which advil belongs): lots
references to diuretics:some
references to anabolic steroids:zero

Am I saying abusing steroids is safe/advisable? of course not. But if TP took as much advil as he says for as long as he did it's not a medical miracle that his kidney's said enough tom, we've had enough.

This is so true, but this is one of those arguments that isn't going to be won. You know, kind of like arguments dealing with race, politics, and religion. People will never accept the opinions of those that disagree. Neither can they agree to disagree. The people who are wrong won't admit they could possibly be wrong in their assumptions.
But like badlad said this has become a sport of excess. Excessive size, drug use(anabolics, diuretics, diet drugs, recreational drugs, insulin, gh,etc), protein consumption, water restriction(final days precontest), tanning,etc...
Where does it end? When are competitors and fans alike going to say enough is enough? Whether these deaths are caused by steroids or not isn't as much an issue as the excessive nature that the bodybuilding culture has developed.

True, but there are only a handful of men (a few hundred or thousand?) who abuse both diuretics and pro level steroids and advil.

There are millinons of Americans who shoot their liver to shit every day with ibuprofin.

PLUS, most men won't tell their doc they're buying gym steroids, so advil will soak up a disproportionate amount of blame.

I will not disagree about the diuretic abuse. I would like all BB's reading this sitght to be put off diuretic use.(Pigs will fly!)I also agree that men would conceal their elicit drug use when going to the doctor/hospital. However just to be pedantic, NSAIDS cause specific renal problems including acute renal failure from acute tubular necrsosis and more commonly chronic renal failure from papillary necrosis. Anabolic steroids have less well described adverse effects on the kidneys although there are case reports of acute (not chronic like TP's) renal failure and steroid abuse. However wether Tom thought he was bullshiting people or not and regardless of what he knows about drugs his statement that the advil and not 'roids caused his kidney problems is actually very likely to be true from a medical point of view. In fact some getbiggers might be surprised to know that anabolic steroids(nandralone decanoate-'deca') have been used to treat anaemia and poor nutrional status in dialysis patients.

They are toxic to the kidneys. If you are taking multiple dozens of extra strength Advil a day for years it could very well kill you.

take a bottle of ibuprofen or inject a huge quantity of test. one of these will kill you, the other will just put you in the hospital for a little bit.
