Did you know that the nation's poverty rate reached an all-time low at the end of 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic struck? It was the result of higher wages and spectacularly low unemployment. And while that sounds simple enough, we have to ask: How was this achieved?

There are a host of driving factors behind these successes, including President Trump's common-sense economic policies, which slashed red tape through deregulation and cut taxes for working families, unleashing the American spirit of innovation and unlocking the American dream for millions of previously-forgotten Americans.

But one of the greatest boons for low-income Americans under President Trump was his administration's immigration policy. By actually enforcing immigration law and reducing the influx of illegal, low-wage labor that directly competes with America's poorest workers, President Trump helped the long-neglected working class to see their highest pay raises in 20 years and lowest unemployment in 50 years, including the lowest Black and Hispanic unemployment ever recorded.


Whether you liked President Trump or not, a working-class coalition elected him in 2016 to end the open-borders policies of previous administrations. He followed through on his promise, and not only did American workers benefit, but the poorest Americans benefitted the most of all. And as I have noted, they are disproportionally minorities.

President Trump recognized a reality others refused to acknowledge: Our broken immigration system has hurt poor Americans most of all. Decades of low-skill, low-wage immigration had depressed wages and employment for workers on the bottom rung of the economic ladder.

To be clear, I want a legally even playing field. The other guy has to pay taxes and carry mandated insurances, obey the same labour laws, etc. Then it'll be challenge accepted.

If he wants to live cheaper, 15 to a house, I'm ok with that. If someone can deliver an equal quality result for less than me, then he should win the job. There's tons of Chinese in dry lining in Aus but I'm fine with that. Bring it on.

What he did was make it so expensive that only rich people would hire him to do it, it's all custom. The people who are willing to pay $20k for a table typically appreciate the craftmanship. I have some of his stuff in my house, people always are amazed by how perfectly it is crafted. The way the drawers open and shut seamlessly and he even matches the grain of the wood at the edges. It's pretty incredible.

Nobody cares about it anymore, and the people that do are few and far between unfortunately.

I can't pretend to know the intricacies of woodworking, like how tight to mortice walnut vs oak or precisely where to employ flat, riff, or radially sawn grain, etc, but I really respect guys who do and the quality they can achieve. I think I know enough to know what I don't know, but there's probably stuff I don't know that I don't know.    But I'll sure find out when I build my kitchen. (Filler & paint has made me the carpenter I ain't, up until now.)

I doubt I can even find grain finished cabinets in Western Australia these days and that's what I want. 90% of the market is plastic covered chipboard. The high end 10% is lacquered. 100% is CNCed. Anyone without CNC gear is basically done at this point. Such is the marketplace.

In Canada, we had a MILLION immigrants last year - most of them legal.
