George Steele was actually a great amateur and shoot wrestler. He's in the Michigan Hall of Fame for both football and wrestling I think. Was a high school teacher/coach and only did pro wrestling in the summers.

1966 !! One hell of a great year!

I was aboard ship as a part of a MAF (Marine Amphibious Force) cruising within international waters off the coast of Russia  when we got hit be a huge 3 day storm which the captain  claimed was the wildest storm he had ever seeen.

I have no idea why I did not get seasick but of the 1,200+ personnel, the captain and myself and three others were the only individuals to show up in the O mess and each of the Fhilipino mess crew each looked slightly green

This story gets way too long ... but it does involve an international incident .... and I actually got shot in my right eye while on maneuvers in a foreign jungle.

Less than 3 inches away but it was a very weak 'blank' and simply made a "POP!" sound , so I merely ended up with a perfectly round, black-eye.

Three weeks before the contest, whilst at a bodybuilding event, My wife and I, and four friends, went into a café for a coffee. Unknown to us, in the cafe were two guys who had upset some major drug dealers and they were about to be paid a visit by some of the gang members. In the pitched battle that broke out, as we tried to protect our wives from being hurt, I was stabbed in the back and my right bicep was severed. Once again my ambitions had been dashed.
I was rushed to hospital and the surgeons set about saving my life. I had lost four pints of blood by the time I reached E.R. and for the only time in my life I really thought that I was going to die that night. It took 147 stitches to close up the wound in my back and a good few more to re-attach my bicep. The doctors also found that I also had a broken jaw, which they wired up for me. I remember thinking, “Great, how the heck am I going to recover if I can’t eat solid food?” “Oh well, I guess I’ll have to start from scratch again”. You have to keep smiling, don’t you?
Over the next few days I began to ask myself, “Why?”. Why had it happened to me again? I figured that it was all part of the plan, but what that plan is I have yet to discover.
Eleven weeks after the attack I walked back into the gym and did a set of light dumbbell curls with my right arm. Eleven months later I walked on stage at the Arnold Classic in Columbus, Ohio, where I placed 12th. One week later I was in Australia where I competed in the Melbourne Grand Prix, placing 8th and after another week I placed 7th in the World Pro Championships in Sydney.

Mike Quinn said a lot of stuff about the guy that attacked him too.  I don't know the Frank Richards story, maybe totally innocent and attacked, maybe being an asshole like Mike Quinn.  If it was in a magazine, that's not reliable on something like this usually, anyone know from actual knowledge?

Just curious, no aspersions on Frank R, admired his physique

I don't know if I got the story right but this is what I was told. Quinn got hit repeatedly with a beer mug from a mobster in a club.

Frank Richards was one tough SOB.....I remember the magazines in the 70`s touting him as one of the main men who could possibly beat Arnold.

Too bad he had such bad breaks (no pun intended) he was awesome.

Always knew Rollon as a specialist in the old strandpulling/cable expander stuff. Didn't know he denied the role of free-weights in the development of his physique  ala Charles Atlas.  Perhaps he wanted to sell more cable expanders or his own expander course.  That would make sense. Strength training and marketing gimmicks have gone hand in hand since like forever.
