It could be that it's a male bear and that it recognizes that she's a female. That sometimes puts potential volatile animals at ease.
My buddy has a 150 pound rottweiler male dog that only likes his owner(who is male). He gives a bloodcurdling growl when other male people come into the house, including me. But when I bring my girlfriend, the dog has no issue around her and doesn't growl at her. Even lets her pet his head.
