What are your thoughts on the Mr. Olympia 2022 results
« on: December 18, 2022, 08:01:05 AM »
Saw the live stream and out of the top 5 guys felt Hadi was the clear winner. Hadi had the best conditioning and very few weak points.

My personal opinion (I am sure many will not like this stance), I am more of a fan of the Men's Physique division. I appreciate that they display nicely shaped overall muscle, a small waist, good V-taper and good abs. The look they strive for is highly marketable, will look good in ALL clothing and is attractive to both men and women. Also, there is no one who would tell me that a guy like Brandon Hendrickson is not big enough or impressive looking in terms of his proportions and muscularity.

I think the Mr. Olympia lineup is just filled with competitors that are too damn big. It's not aesthetically pleasing anymore. Also, those guys can barely fit into regular clothing. Women aren't into that shit, only gay men with a propensity for the odd. Besides, off season they look so damn unhealthy and bloated year round, it's not the type of role model you want to represent an industry that pushes forth the idea of "Fitness and Health". Do I think the Classic Physique is a little better? Definitely. I know that my sentiment is based on the fact that I am more of a fan of the Mr. Olympia contests from the late 70's, before hormonal supplementation was taken to another level, but even so, I just think that for this niche to survive, we will have to make it more popular to the common masses.

Anywho, congrats to Hadi. He was the obvious winner and worked hard for it.

Based on your argument, I thought you might be pulling for Brandon Curry to regain the title. Some complain that he isn't dry or hard enough. But, isn't this obsession with extreme condition doing more damage to these fellows than merely their super-size?

I would argue that the reason the niche has survived is the internet/social media. No longer do bodybuilders have to appease mainstream media to get contest footage. I come from the days of waiting until 0-dark-30 to watch American Muscle, showing footage of contests that happens 4-6 months prior to the broadcast.

Appealing to the masses appears to be a fool's errand, much like the late Ben Weider Quixotic quest to get bodybuilding into the Olympics. People think Arnold is too big TODAY. Heck, Chris Hemsworth lamented that his wife and her friends HATED how big he got for "Thor "Love and Thunder".

Should he move to Classic? Somebody has to actually challenge Bumstead.

It sounds to me like the issue with Bumstead is they don’t apply the weight-limit rules to him.

He is not big enough or impressive enough. Standing by himself sure but it all changes when you stand next to a bigger guy. Extreme bodybuilding has found it's support in the other categories and fitness expos bringing in more people. It was never meant to be a mainstream look that anyone could achieve. It's always just one 6 foot plus white Mr Olympia away from being mainstream. They need to bring back the height classes and drop the 212.

My view leans more towards what will generate the most money to keep the industry alive. Unless we are able to make this more mainstream, it will fall to the wayside. Society, Hollywood and popular culture as a whole is less moved by the sheer size of Mr. Olympia competitors. Also, I've spoken to and met many IFBB pros from the 80's up to present day and these guys don't look well in person. Again, just my opinion. I know everyone has a different view of what constitutes looking "well" or "healthy".

For me, Arnold at his prime was pretty huge. Heck, for me, guys like Paul Grant (Wales - Mr. Universe Contestant) or even Ed Corney in 1975 were just right in size and proportions. I don't think the extreme conditioning is a good thing.

If I had to pick a bodybuilder from the past that had just enough size and proportions and the right kind of conditioning, as crazy as he was, Mike Mentzer would be it. I'd even venture to say that instead of the supposed "225lb" he would compete at, he could have likely done just as good at around 205-210lb.

It sounds to me like the issue with Bumstead is they don’t apply the weight-limit rules to him.

Or, just as guys in 212 starve and dehydrate themselves to make weight and fill back up to be WAY OVER the limit, Bumstead probably does the whole torture-rack thing to temporarily make himself taller.

Logan Franklin complained that the IFBB keeps measuring him at 5'111/2", even though his medical records and driver's license list him at an even 6' tall. Per the strange Classic rules, that 8-10 lbs of bodyweight for that mere half an inch.

Exactly.

I have used this method successfully in multiple mediums.

I mean.... isn't that crazy? In the day and age of information (too much information honestly)

You can't at least have a twitter or instagram with the results or a link to a short write. A 5 minute recap video on YouTube?

If anyone gets near him he will measure in at 6'6

Fucks sake guy is 6ft tall, all of a sudden hes taller so he can add extra weight

The other competitors should take legal action and have Matt officially measure him

The issue with bodybuilding to me has more to do with the fact that, to the public at large, bodybuilders do nothing with their muscle but pose.

The closest bodybuilding has ever come to mainstream, per se, is American Gladiators, which was loaded with top NPC amateur bodybuilders and female IFBB pros. But, that had more to do their athletic prowess (Female powerball was my favorite  ;D).

I guess the promoters today figure that they're never going to get mainstream acceptance. But, thanks to the internet, they no longer need it. They don't have to dance around the steroid issue; they don't have to explain away the "weirdness" of the "sport".

Hollywood has plastic suits and CGI; so the need for buffed dudes to be superheroes or 300-lbers to play the Incredible Hulk has greatly diminished.

That's another issue that over the years has been brought to question. Hence why I am very careful in not using the term "athlete" when discussing the Mr. Olympia competitors.
