How likely?  Well, I have a friend in AZ who had this happen.  Some nut job broke into his place thinking that he wasn't home that weekend.  He's a lite sleeper, heard a sound, rolled over, grabbed his 9mm from the night stand, stood behind the door as he heard foot steps down the hallway.  Soon as he heard the guy open the door to his othr bedroom he was on him and had him sprawled out on the floor.  Knee in the back, gun at the back of the intruders head when cops came.
