Other than drowsiness what is the problem with gabapentin?

I've been taking it 3 to 4 X a week for sleep.  It's really the best thing I've ever used for sleep. 200 mgs does the trick anything more than 300 mgs and there's a little drowsiness the next day but not too much. Is there some other issue with it?

Oh really? I never knew it was used for that. I remember reading of widespread gabapentin abuse in the UK, but it was pretty much all just junkies who took anything they could get anyway. Diphenhydramine (Nytol/Benadryl) actually works very well on me for sleep.

Side note: this guy bugs me. He had some success with the channel during the COVID years, but it seems as though he's throwing his full weight into it with clickbait titles. He's got a really gay cadence to his voice that makes everything sound like some sort of sexually-charged question. "HellooOO? Dr SunEEl DhAaand? Can I..... suck ya pENis?"

A couple of people recommended it to me for sleep. I called my Doctor and asked. Presto. He said  "well, its typically used for pain but a common side effect is drowsiness. Try it and let me know how it works." He said had a relatively low abuse profile,  which surprised me because so many people online have told me differently.

Why are 60% of Americans over 60 taking 4-5 medications?  Is this necessary?

I'm 65 and take zero medications.

The point is that doctors today often do not address the root causes of a problem and just prescribe drugs.

For example, what is the root cause of why you need a drug to sleep?

Would it not be better to correct this issue (if possible) so that you no longer need to take the drug?

Sleep problems been going on for over a decade. Probably from working the grave yard shift for years as well as a healthy dose of ptsd.

In my case there is the matter of my heart, my death and my, for lack of a lesser term, return.  The doctors gave me strict orders not to defer from the medications they gave me.  Also I wear two watches to monitor my heart as best they can and I must also keep in mind what I think a heart attack feels like and get to an ER as quickly as possible if I think I am having one.

I do not like taking medicines.  When first given Warfarin was able to be taken off  after a while. It took a few months too for me to convince them I could make it without that rat poison.  I would go through places with blood oozing out of my eyes and mouth, often just telling people I was a day-walking vampyre.

I am looking across the room now at 17 bottles.  One day I hope to not have any there so I do as they ask.  Over 73 pounds removed from my frame because the heart doesn't care if it is fat or muscle.   I try to train and this week I am doing better than I have in some time.  My older brother has been given some medicine he does not like taking  but he has to make his choices himself or with his wife.

So yes, my friend.  It will be better when we are able to not have to take something.  Until then, it will be a bitter.  I can do this again.

Same.  That was my question. Like OK, so what if you are trying to sleep? Why would you advise someone to stop taking it? It works great for me.

Same here man!  ..... (I'm also on Seroquel for sleep .... I have severe insomnia! ... I'll lay awake all night .... then panic / get anxiety as the sun rises)  Gabapentin has helped tremendously! (If I stop taking everything I don't sleep ... at all!)

Z-class drugs for sleep. The danger is in next day falls. An old person who breaks their hip is often a goner. Yes this is what an alarming number of them are prescribed - even while the instructions say they are not really to be prescribed to the elderly, and not for longer than 2 weeks. Yet people like my mother have had a prescription for years straight. Lately they try to push the antidepressant mirtazapine instead for sleep.

As a doc the problem is that many people are not willing to do work required to solve the root of the problem. Imsomnia is a great example.

Doc - We've now concluded that your imsomnia is caused by your lifestyle and stress. I would suggest that we will induce some more daily moderate exercise. You will not use your mobile devices before bedtime. Make sure the room is cool. There is also a possibility of sleep therapy if we aren't able to solve the problem.

Patient - *look of bewilderment* Hell no. I already do everything perfectly. I want some pills  ;D

That is very interesting it is RX'd for sleep.  Do you have any sort of pain diagnostic or nerve problems (like restless leg syndrome) that was interfering in your sleep?

I know someone that takes it because of the neuro problems that chemo gave her.   She says that the biggest problem she has with it is that she has the brain fog at times and feels very lethargic during the day often.  She's been on it for about a year now.

Yes, that is the case with most people.
