Total mismatch. Navy seals, first of all, have superior mental toughness. You are not going to defeat a Navy seal in hand to hand combat unless he's old or injured or you have a good weapon. Navy seals are trained to kill and survive life and death scenarios, and they are very good at it.

All things being equal a very average MMA fighter could probably go a while but in the end you are fighting an opponent who will never tap out, is physically and mentally tough, and there's no luck involved.

A properly applied submission hold will have any Navy SEAL tapping out while crying for mercy.

Are seals not taught MMA or something similar?

In the 80's-90's I think they learned Paul Vunak's stuff but I don't know what they do now. Military men spend very little time on hand to hand combat though.

Karate, Kung fu, tae Kwon do, tang so do, kenpo, etc... all pretty much useless in real hand to hand combat. Tbh, wrestling is a great way to defend self, subdue an attacker. If you've ever had any boxing experience and have learned how it feels to be hit in the face and know some basics of footwork and punching, thats about as good as its gonna get for your average guy, military or not.

Experience grappling and striking, boxing/wrestling,  will get you past most untrained people.  Now, all bets are off if you happen to run into a guy who loves fighting,  a guy who's been in dozens or even hundreds of street fights, same for just about any level of professional fighter. They'll clean your clock. All the martial arts are for 9 year olds to collect trophies and different colored belts. It really is child's play, but its a good start for kids to learn competition,  discipline etc...

Your average karate sensei (otherwise unemployed, 30 year old adolescent) is a joke. A lot of them give off strong pedo vibes. Fleecing single moms out of membership dues so they have a place to leave their kid for a few hours a day.

Seriously,  a good and humorous look at these types is on the Instagram page McDojo life. Not all but most are living a fantasy.  The akido masters who throw a dozen opponents with a twist of the wrist, channeling their "chi" are only slightly less pathetic than the losers who actually pay to fall all over the mat. Its bizarre,  a weird form of social contagion.

They aren’t all useless, in the end , it comes down to the individual

No real fighter ever practices just one form, that’s why it’s MMA

The karate guy's named Jesse Enkamp and he's from Norway. I follow his channel on Youtube and his shtick is "karate vs ___" and he implies that karate is better than whatever but he gets his a$$ kicked every time. You think he'd learn by now.

Training in say Okinawa Goju Ryu is not like Shotokan in Norway.
A lot of Karate nowadays from Japan especially Shotokan ( JKA ) is sport Karate

People do not understand the whole story of "do" or way & why it originated.

Karate-do
Ken-do
Ju-do
...etc

In Okinawa they still train Old School to kill
