What I'm saying is it was inevitable this would get into Iran, because Israel was not going to stop.

They are our ally, so we were going to be involved.

Okay, I get what you're saying. I think the entire setup in that region is basically destined for constant war and conflict. October 7th didn't fundamentally change anything it was just the latest spark. If it hadn't been that, it would've been something else.

At this point, I don't see any realistic path to lasting peace there. The US pouring resources into playing peacemaker or unconditionally backing allies just drains our political capital and money that would be better spent elsewhere. But I also get that I am an extreme pessimist about this.

All of this was inevitable after Oct 7th.

Of course you could keep going back in time and find instances of aggression from either side.

But that was the straw that broke them and it was inevitable this was not going to stop.

But to side with the regime that executes its citizens, backs Hezbollah, etc is f'n retarded.

I'm sure you've seen the suspicions and allegations that Israel knew the attack was coming. Charlie Kirk thought there was a 'stand down order' on Oct 7, the idea being that if the attack was really bad Israel would have its excuse to ethnically cleanse the Palestinians. I think some IDF have said they were told to stand down. I saw something about some female IDF at the border warning that the Palestinians were preparing something; Turkey warned of an attack as well if I'm not mistaken.
It is also alleged that Israel wanted Hamas in power so they were justified in killing Palestinians regularly. It's a fact that Bibi approved of payments to Hamas to the order of tens of millions a month, handed over in suitcases full of cash.

I'll never make excuses for brutal repression of citizens and killing of 'regular' folks. I'm sure they do evil stuff there but at the same time I sort of try to put things in perspective. A while ago there was a story of an Iranian wrestler being put to death and it was put forth as an example of the evil the regime does. Coach did on this thread. I said the regime convicted him of hacking to death police officers with a machete or sword or something during the peaceful and organic protests. Coach said, "that's good that he did that."

Hezbollah is great for Israel too; much easier to annex Lebanese land for the Greater Israel project.

And if the Iran war is won nothing much is resolved. Next up: Turkey and Pakistan.

They certainly act like an ally by doing everything possible to make the US do its fighting; most recently by trying to destroy Trump's attempts at reaching a deal with Iran.

No, but it's the alleged reason used by the US for not 'deliberately' targeting civilian or state infrastructure, such as electricity, water etc.

For instance, in their bombing of North Vietnam, they did initially bomb such targets but then had long ceasefires in between where the North Vietnamese could repair the damages and recover.

Then later they completely stopped hitting these targets, which meant the bombing didn't achieve anything.

I don't know anything about the Vietnam war really, but I'm sure you're right.

Plenty of civilian infrastructure has been hit in Iran though. I have seen some suggest US military always knew they couldn't touch Iran's underground missile caches and production facilities, that they just bombed the entrances to these in a performative act; the real hope was that the 'tyrannical' regime would fall and the Iranians would rise up against them. Now however it's obvious Trump for sure realizes there's no bombing or military solution to the Iran 'problem.'

I agree. FTW, let them kill themselves off so we can walk in and take the oil without resistance. 8)
US surviving on oil is a short term strategy. The petro dollar that is. So is the Might makes it right kind of "strategy". When that is clear you will aleniate the whole world.

"Iran’s Military is a complete and total mess. Much of it, like their Navy and Air Force, doesn’t even exist anymore - They have been completely defeated. Iran is all talk and no action.

The Bully of the Middle East is DEAD!!! They’ve taken too long to negotiate a deal that would have been great for them, now they will have to pay the price!!!"

- Trump

Ok Donald, so no worries then, the war is over and everything's fine, the Strait is open and Iran is no longer a threat to Israel. Fantastic.

This master negotiator utterly failed with Ukraine. Utterly failed in bringing peace to Gaza and solving a "3000 year conflict" as he promised. Past few weeks he promised a deal with Iran was basically fully negotiated and only the signatures were missing. I don't see the logic of promising stuff before it's finalized. Other diplomats say this isn't the right playbook, work in silence and then announce whatever when you can actually deliver. I don't know if having your Jew golfing buddies and family members work as diplomats is that smart either.

His "board of peace" also apparently has no money although he said lots of countries signed on to it - it had a 1 million price tag. Some are speculating that perhaps money went into Trump's private bank accounts instead.

It's going to be tough if the US and Israel have different goals.  It will surely extend this.
