Lifting related: bicep surgery
« on: September 21, 2026, 09:29:06 AM »
Today I had my torn bicep fixed, after 6 months (thanks to socialized medicine). Before they wheeled me into the operating room the surgeon came and started marking up my leg. I was like what the hell is this? "I have to take a tendon from behind your knee because your bicep has retracted so much due to coming in so late. You'll regain 60% of your previous strength." Luckily he didn't have to do that and he said I can get to 90-95%. We'll see what it will look like, my other bicep was torn the same way and it's almost as strong as before. Hadn't heard of using that tendon. It's the big tendon you feel in the back of your leg above the knee on the inside. He claimed it's nothing to worry about, soccer players use that tendon all the time to fix meniscus tears and they are as good as new ???

I'm tiny and weak because I've only been able to lift a couple of weeks at a time between new bouts of pancreatitis.

Thanks, it's in a half cast for 2 weeks. Then I get that thingie where you increase range slowly. But last time the doc told me at about 12 weeks post-op I should already be lifting at max effort, "we don't want you sort of back, we want you 100% back!" I had been rehabbing very light and with very sub-max effort :D

I've told before about my friend who claimed he was back 100% in 6 weeks! ???

Hours later I still can't move my fingers due to the local anesthetic they put in my armpit area, 20CCs worth.

My buddy before and after. Not 6 weeks between the pics but you can see how good the surgery result was

Good luck Van. Wishing you a safe and successful recovery.
You can do pull-ups and pulldowns using ab straps!

Damn 6 months.. I would have paid private rather then. But I guess there is economy to worry about. But as long as there is some tendon left to fetch up and anchor through the bone then it should be good and not much to worry about.

I guess you should be more carefull in recovery/rehab as you waited so long and the tendon probably atrophied and has become alot weaker.

Good luck / speedy recovery but you are not friendly towards your body.
I see early retirement due to 405lbs upright rows on the horizon...

Thanks for the well wishes everyone :)

What kinda workouts were you doing that tore both biceps?

I was doing a very careful single as a warmup with I think 350lbs when it popped. Consider that I had been doing 660lbs+ almost every single week for over two and a half decades straight. I thought the supinated arm was invincible since it's held up for so long LOL. I look at videos from 15+ years ago and after every lift I look at this arm to see if it's still attached.

Those stupid rack pulls were more than 15 years ago. I've have pushed floor deads for singles because I love it so much and I've accepted the injury risk. But I've been very injury conscious every single time I dead; ironically before I tore this bicep I had just yelled at my partner to keep his supinated arm straight during his set because I'm so conscious of the risk. Before every single set as he was setting up I yelled, "straight arm, big air!" I haven't dared to squat much more than 350lbs for a long time since I've been sure they will tear with my luck. Every movement other than deads is extremely careful and light, warmups for 50-100 reps and so on. The other bicep tore when lifting a welding machine into a shipping container 8)

Edit. I haven't even dared to do curl grip pullups due to the bicep injury risk. Always been very conscious of injury risk.

Good luck on the recovery.

This is a good time to change your whole lifting philosophy.

The extreme size and strength is a young man’s goal.

You need to think more about longevity.

Thanks. Except for deads I've been doing lots of extremely high rep sets for many years 8)

I have been taking lots of drugs though. I've said to friends I've caused all my health problems myself but some countered that I might have been dead if I wasn't so "strong." I think PEDs can help and hurt different aspects of health at the same time so who the hell knows :D

Like HRT can decrease lifespan theoretically but can also make you resistant if you were to fall seriously ill.

Muzzie lover huh? ::) :D
