Larry Allen Benches 635
« on: June 17, 2006, 05:52:18 PM »
SF 49ers' OG apparently recently benched 635:

"On top of that is a solid stable of running backs and a formidable offensive line led by new acquisition Larry Allen. Allen awed his teammates in the weight room recently by bench pressing a bar-bending 635 pounds."

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2006/06/17/SPG2EJFNBG1.DTL

Not bad for a fat guy.  :)  He has always been one of the strongest men in the NFL.

You're thinking of jazzmaster Duke Ellison.  Common mistake.

No, 240.  You're thinking of former Washington Bullet, Pervis Ellison.

He did 700 when he was here in dallas.  He also did a squat of 900 plus years ago when he in his prime.

he is widely known as the strongest man in the NFL. He did 225 for 43 in Hawaii during the pro bowl week.(says he could have done more, though)

I saw a video of his "700 lb bench," and he had like 5 guys holding the bar. Someone with a 700 bench should be able to do a lot more than 40 reps with 225. Even a 500 lb bencher could probably come close to that.

agreed. anyone who is very strong and does pushups to go along with their bench training should be able to rep with 225 for 100 or so. Case in point, my max is probably 345 or so. I can easily do 100 pushups, and rep with 225 for 22 the last time I tried. It seems if someone can max at 600, they should be able to rep out 225 for 80 at least. I never see it happen though.

i agree with you here, my max is 385 and the last time i did a rep with 225 set i got 22 reps so someone who supposedly benches 700 should be able to do at least 80 if not more, Ronnie supposedly did 78 with 225 and he only maxes at around 550.

Not necessarily.  I don't think 1RM and muscle endurance are synonymous.  I don't lift heavy and don't know what my 1RM max is, but I doubt it's 385.  I never go heavier than 3 plates.  I do most of my working sets with 225, anywhere from 20 to 30 rep sets every week.  That means I can press 225 more than many guys who would leave me in the dust with their 1RM.

I'd like to know what powerlifters generally do with 225.

Ya that is a good point. Kinda like comparing average basketball stats with Micheal Jordan's.

Haha ok Bobby  ::)

It seems like most people do a few reps with 135, then proceed to 225 for warming up before going heavy. No reason to bite my head off.

I have a lifetime membership at Bally's but I choose a smaller gym(mainly cuz my high school friend owns it).
