Title: Snacks while in pre-contest
Post by: Laura Lee on June 05, 2007, 07:02:25 AM
Does anybody have any ideas.  Now remember...I'm low carbing it too.

I gotta have something other than tuna, chicken, egg whites, oatmeal and broccoli.

I'm dying here.  :'(

Umm Linda, I am eating every 3 hours and they are proper meals for pre-contest.  When you are confined to eating the same thing over and over again for several weeks, your body has a tendance to want/crave something else before you kinda go crazy and hit up Pizza Hut or Dairy Queen, sooooo hence my question on trying something a little different (but without cheating).

You see?    ;)

What is your current carb to body weight ratio?

What is your current carb to body weight ratio?
I am cycling carbs.  50g on low days, 125g on high.  My current weight is 142 lbs. (carbs consisting of oatmeal and brown rice / fiberous carbs: broccoli, green beens, cauliflower)

Sorry to say buddy (and I am sure you know this already) but it's just gonna get worse as you decrease carb consumption closer in. The war of wills has begun! Just thought of something do you like Baked sweet potatoe cubed, they are wonderfully filling and would take the edge off without hurting you carb consumption

Well after they are cooked press some grapenuts cereal into them that should add the crunch for ya!

This may sound TOTALLY nasty, but I used to microwave brussel sprouts until they were pretty much burnt balls of fiber... then I'd put French's mustard on them... sounds gross, but you do what you gotta do, and I GUARANTEE that this is a new one for ya!  OR, what about putting sweet potato skins under the broiler, and then sprinkling splenda and cinnamon on them...

Maybe you can freeze some protein (preferably Chocolate) and make it "look" like mousse...are you allowed to eat a little bit of dried fruit...if you eat oats in the AM, throw maybe 5 little pieces of dried fruit on there...MMMMMMmmmmmmm good...nice and crunchy!!!!!

Hustler: I LOVE grapenuts cerial.  Great idea.

Jennifer:  Thanks for the brussel sprouts idea.  I never tried them before.  What do they taste like?

Lisa: Unfortunately protein shakes, even frozen are out of the equation at this time of the diet.  :(   I love shakes too.  And dried fruit contain too much sugar.

xxxLinda: Carrots are great for the most part when not dieting, but unfortunately they too are very high in the sugar index.

I'm gonna try this today Jenn but I may not do the "burnt balls of fiber" thing lol worth a try!

Indeed, they do... careful with these bad boys!  Make sure you have no where to go for a while after eating them... it works best with frozen ones.  Put a bag of frozen sprouts in the microwave for 20-25 min.  CRUNCHY.. but you have to absolutely add mustard, or it's just not the same..

Hustler, enjoy the sweet potato skins!  And Michael... you're a wiseass lol!

Eggs bread crumbs and tuna all mixed together in the form of a patty. Not bad. It will fill you up and you don't need to worry about fats or carbs.

Not taking away from your recommendation but the patty (which is VG) would be part of a meal rather than a snack, correct?

SF Jello - maybe try making it with some additional Knox geletin and less water so it's like kids Knox blocks - then you can at least "chew" the jello  ;)

Try mixing the tuna with your cooked brown rice and egg whites - in the ratios you need - add a little diced up cooked onion, s & p.  Mix it all together and press into those little miniture muffin tins.  Bake @ 375 until "set" and slightly golden - maybe 15 minutes.  Take some Butter Buds and dilute it with  hot water and a little bit of lemon juice and a pinch of seasoned salt or Mrs. Dash's.  Drizzle that over the hot "muffinettes".  At least it's something a little different  :-\   Oh, make sure you spray the tins first.

TVP can help add crunch to....maybe your oatmeal - it's tasteless.  Add that along with some cinnamon and splenda.

Butter Buds is great on steamed veggies.

You're right and I apologise profusely.  I'm just having a laugh, okay?  I realise I'm often silly and ridiculous.  And since I'm 5 or 8 hours ahead of you, I've sometimes had a drink or 3 when you're still on your breakfast or lunch...  Sorry, I know I can be hugely irritating.

Who said I don't work out?   Life is one great big work out.
I'm seriously fit.  I just don't lift weights, I work hard and get my exersice naturally.

So please forgive me.
I've got a lot of mad problems at the moment with horrid new neighbours and so on and I've been losing my temper at them which I so rarely do and intensely dislike.  I even had to call the police in.  So I'm a bit all over the place, I'll be the first to admit that.

I thought the carrot world museum thing was hilarious.  Are we really supposed to take this thing seriously?

xL

I don't eat properly either, but luckily I'm invited out for dinner tonight.  Looking forward.

So >you're so right, I shouldn't be posting about snacking pre-contest.  I haven't a clue what I'm on about.

Alpine Sugar-Free Spiced Cider

both have brain killer in them though

Something else that may help is if you are still using protein shakes to change your flavor.  Whey Gourmet has some great ones that are not the norm like Raspberry and Orange Dreamsicle.

Dieting.  I train almost everyday regardless, but only diet during contest prep.  And neither are hard on my personal life as Michael trains and diets with me, so we are aware of why we might be a little cranky at times.  :)

Funny how food (the lack there of) can cause this type of emotional swing. Iguess this is where the "fat dumb and happy" Cliche' comes from.

Sobbing  :'(  It's almost 3:00pm.

Yes I know I am on EST as well! I have an Idea and this will not hurt you, make that half of a sandwich (one slice of bread) and cut it into bite size pieces (maybe 4-6 every half hour as needed) that will take the edge off some what but no milk this late, only water OFC.

Almost reads like a prescription lol!

lol, it does read like a prescription.  The sandwich will have to wait as I am not at home.  I will work on some asparagus stalks, I guess.

Have you ever tried the protein 'brownie'?  You can use any kind of chocolate whey, but Beverly Int'l Muscle provider seems to taste the best.

Put one scoop of whey into a small microwave-proof bowl.  Mix in just enough water until it takes on a cake batter consistency.  Depending on your microwave, nuke it from 30-60 seconds.........just until the center starts to bubble up.  Let it sit for a couple of minutes to set, and it actually tastes like a brownie!

Mmmm, those sound yummy.  Add a little lime flavoring and they become Key-Lime Angel Bites.  :)

cheese cake with a bag of M&M"S
hahahahahahaa, all kidding aside though, just drink a glass of water or brush your teeth that will take away the cravings for a little while at least, also hit the bedroom with Mikey for a little while and do some "cardio".

Me too, but 30 seconds was too long.  It is yummy, but a bit dry.  Gotta do it for less time on my next one.

Hey Laura, it's the last 3 weeks before your contest.  If I were you, I wouldn't do any kind of snacking.  Just stick to your diet and dig in.  Don't do anything that will screw yourself up.

Well I did try the protein brownie.  Using an isolate protein.  0 carbs and 0 sugar.  Dry, but took the edge off, plus it was very filling.  ;)

Well, sometimes, a "snack" pre-comp is inevitable. Often, people who have variable schedules will need an extra meal or snack built into their diet so that there is never more than 3 hrs in the day between meals.

My diet has flexibility for an extra meal if I need it (for example, if I wake up at 5am and go to bed at 2am due to my work schedule).  Usually, I will start off splitting my meals in half and eating every 2 hrs rather than every 3..........but on the REALLY long, crazy days, I still need to add extra so that there is not a 5-6 hr gap without a meal.  I think as a once-in-a while thing it's okay to do that--provided you limit the 'extras' to clean protein and fibrous carbs.

I never said snacking on white chicken and brocolli is bad, especially if you are working long shifts like you are doc.  I've had longer days than I have had meals and would stretch them out also.  But I would try to avoid the brownies.  It's tough!  I've had friends that bite on a Snickers bar all week and they do fine in a show.  However, I'd hate to be standing on stage thinking, "Damn!  I never should have eaten that (insert whatever)!"

It wasn't a real brownie (w/sugar n flour).  It was made from just protein powder (isolate) and water.  That's it.  :)

There's been a lot of studies proving that your body may not know the difference & process it as if it were.
