don't be stud you deserve the praise and attention, i mean fucck, you barbellrow 405 for 10, do good mornings with 405 for 10 and one arm preacher curl a 90 pound db for reps, those type of lies deserve attention.

hahaha "barbellrow 405 for 10" where do these clowns come from.

I haven't hit those numbers in over a month now with this new style of training..adn fuck good mornings. After having 405lbs crash down off my back because I'm too pussy to control it easily, I don't feel like doing them anymore. I switched them out with another exercise. I plan on hitting seated dumbbell curls with 70lbs for 12 reps and hammer curls with 80lbs for reps today too...you think I should post a vid? My camera is broke though so you might be outta luck. ::) ;D
On a side note that you've mentioned my training, the rp shit I've been doing, if you haven't done it, you should try it. The strength gains along with a little size in the short time Iv'e done it have astounded me. Might be something to look into. Both my arms are now 18" thankgod...

Wow, danielson. That comment I made really got into you're head (and went COMPLETELY over it at the same time), good, it gives you something to think about. Now think about it.
-
"the coach" is almost as strong on his internet lifts as "wickedtruth" but not quite but a 600 bench raw at 198 is still pretty decent. ::)

No, you are a liar coach! You think if Billy M. and that lil gymnast lined up against each other on the football field, the lil dude would win? Name one thing that the lil fella is stronger than him at!

Relative strength my friend, relative strength.
Relative to his bodyweight.
There is no way he has the strength to move the weights Wolfy moves, but there is no way in hell any of us on this board could do the type of movements that gymnast is doing. We simply dont have the strength relative to our bodyweight.

what you talkin' bout Willis?

I give total credit to the strength and athleticism of gymnasts, but based on my own experience training with an advanced gymnast on a couple of occassions I can say without hesitation that he would own me on planche pushups, walking on my hands, ring work, flipping and all the other gymnastics movements they condition themselves for. Although, when he was placed under or above a heavy bar for presses or rows the difference in the power levels between us was night and day....I owned him there. Same thing with a baseball pitcher or a conditioned boxer. Yes, I'm stronger than both, but I'd never come close to the pitcher's fastball or the boxer's right hook.....I'd get out pitched and knocked on my ass.

Exactly, I just want to know why Coach thinks because someone trains their balance and works with their own bodyweight they are stronger than anyone on here.

Coach are you suggesting that if a 170lb gymnast can max bp 250lbs that we should add his bodyweight on top of that 250lbs (due to his functional strength) and call his max bp 420lbs?
-
A gymnast is a very powerfull athlete,no doubt. However, his strength is fuctional for his sport. If you actually measured the amount of force he generates on a machine and compared it to a powerlifter or Olympic lifter, they wouldnt be close. No,a powerlifter couldnt do the rings[of cource weighing over 300 makes that difficult]but a gymnast couldnt squat his own bodyweight.Totally different types of strenth. If I wanted someone to help me move something,Id ask the powerlifter. If I wanted someone to vault across the room Id ask a gymnast.
-
If I wanted someone to help me move something,Id ask the powerlifter.
I would ask the two previous posters, not the gymnast.

No, funtional strength is totally different. I'll explain later. But Billy is correct in some respects, the powerlifter can absolutly build his functional strength to benefit his performance, but if you tried to add powerlifting movements to a gymnast it would take away from his/her performance.
When I get back, I will go into detail. But it starts with stabilizer strength.
-
Hey danielson, people like this are stronger as well.......
Thats how BB posedowns should be done. Imagine Coleman and Cutler doing that together. ;D

I thought you were into martial arts? Why in the hell would you have a powerlifter teach you FUNCTIONAL strength?

I said I would choose MOS and Billy to help me move something. Blocking and kicking can't get a refridgerator across the room Joe ::)

A gymnast surely COULD squat his own bodyweight. But I do agree overall. If you were in a situation requiring some huge truck or something to be moved to save the lives of your family and ten jewish children no degree of gymnastic flair would get the job done.

10 Jewish people lol ;D. Coach is entitled to his opinion, however wrong he may be. My definition of strength and power can be measured in two ways, the big 3 lifts or 2 people lined up against each other like NFL linemen, I really can't think of any other way to test overall strength than 2 people using all of their muscles to push another man back. In these 2 areas gymnasts would not fare well.

The strongest feat of strength ive seen on GetBig is Chris Mason doing some insane weight on stiff legged deadlifts.

That was a great lift. Strong guy.

coach is a funny guy.
personal trainer, but it seems like everything he tries to pontificate on, he knows shit about.
anyone with a clue about strength training knows that there is only one way to train for strength and that is with weights. nothing else come close (btw, body weight is still a weight ::)) ie muscle contracts against greater loads it gets stronger, a no brainer really.
now, if you're talking about skill, agility, balance, speed, power, endurance, etc, etc, then those things are different matters.
coach, i've tried bud, but you are either a gimmick or you're so full of shit it's not even funny anymore.

This is true. My family and I were driving past a synagogue a few weeks back and the blintzes they were selling there smelled so good that we pulled over. Unfortunately a gust of wind blew a truck driver's sideburns acros his eyes and the truck delivering dradeles and minoras crashed into the crowd, pinning my family and a slew of Jews against a wall. Everyone was shouting Oi Vey and the gymnasts were totally ineffectual doing vaults and handsprings off the truck. Me and a moyle picked that thing up barbarian bros style and saved the day. They even gave us 5% off the cost of the blintzes!

Hey genius, if you have been following the thread, and reading, you would have read that I was telling danielson to THINK, i haven't changed my tune one bit. Just the fact that you have to ask what ABSOLUTE strength is tells me you know nothing. Thanks for coming, tip your waitress on the way out.

This is a ridiculous argument. If you put the gymnyst guy under 405 he'd get crushed. Likewise a 350lb guy probably could not hit an Iron cross. There is a difference between being strong and being able to have total muscle control and manipulate your own bodyweight.
I believe that Coach may have mis-spoke when he said:
Funny thing is, he's literally stronger than anyone on this board!!
It is an impressive feat, but could the little guy walk up and deadlift 600lbs? I'm guessing no.

I know what Coach meant, but he is just so easy to get riled up and use multiple !!!!!!!!!!!!'s It didn't work out as well as I had thought thought, he stayed rather calm, props to Coach for not taking the bait too much. Btw Coach, you know I wouldn't call you a fkn idiot over a difference of opinion, I was just trying to get you going :)

For ABSOLUTE strength, yes you are!
hahaha, so you admit that the gymnast isn't actually the strongest? he's got... what... "functional" strength?
"functional strength" is code for "weak, but athletic". it's what people call a guy who can't bench 200 pounds but can climb rocks, someone who can't squat their own body weight but can walk on their hands. ::)
if we define "functional" as "designed for or adapted to a function or use", then ALL strength is functional because it's geared specifically toward the task it's trained for! wolfy has functional strength because he's a bench presser, being able to climb a mountain or do a handstand pushup wouldn't get him fuck all because the "function" he's aiming for is a big bench press.
now you could argue for "useful" strength, but what the hell does that mean? how many times in life do you need to be able to do a planche pushup or a backflip? the only time someone needs strength is for moving heavy shit, and in cases like that a powerlifter's a hell of a lot more "functional" than a gymnast.
years ago when my family was moving, we needed a piano to get moved. my stepdad's friend was this big fat fucker named mike, and this big bastard moved the piano all by himself. hoisted the damn thing up into the truck without help. he couldn't do a pullup to save his life, but he picked up an upright piano (so it wasn't a gigantic thing that weighed 800 pounds, but still).
so at the end of the day, whose strength is "functional"? the guy who can do a one-armed pullup or a cross on the rings but can't pick up a keg of beer, or the guy who can carry two of them up a flight of stairs?
::)

Great post.....I remember back in college I was out with some friends at a bar and we were shooting pool next to a table of guys, acouple of which were in sleeveless attire and were walking on their hands and backflipping to impress the chicks. Anyway, they're moving around with their ILS and talkin a big game, but I didn't pay em any attention and kept playing. Well, you know how pool balls sometimes get stuck in tables and you gotta shake or lift an end of a table to get em loose? That happened while I was playin with a friend so I picked up the end of the table about a foot and the ball came loose and we finished our game and I went to grab another beer. When I came back a few minutes later a couple of the girls who were with us were playing and one of my friends came over and said, "dude, while the chicks were playing the sleeveless guys were flirting and flipping for em, but one of the pool balls got stuck so one of the sleeveless guys went over all cocky and tried to lift the table and it wouldn't budge. His friend came to help him and together they lifted it about 4 inches off the ground."

exactly
functional strength depends on what function you're using it for.
fact is, strength is functional if it allows you to perform your intended function.

Lardass that does quarter reps? Hmm!!! Well OK I guess if this is what you call a quarter rep range?

But you are prolly one of those guys like I seen today at the mall wearing a shirt that said:
"Member of the Armed Forces" and then had arrows pointing at each of his 12 inch arms!!! What is sad is he really thought he was HUGE all 5 foot 10 and 145 pounds of him.

I'm telling ya, I had a good chuckle on that one. I will give someone their just due if they have spent the time in the gym to get it. But like I said I'm willing to bet no more then 12 inches.

Powerlifting is all about finding the shortest easiest ROM to lift a given weight. Bodyweight strength takes the opposite approach. It is all about how large of a ROM through which you can move your body.
Consequently powerlifters figure out how to move huge weights through very limited ROMs (i.e. sumo DL, arch back bench press, wide stance squat) but they are unable to support their body weight on one leg, hold a handstand, or even think about doing a planche or lever.
Gymnasts on the other hand can support their bodyweight on any one limb (one arm, one leg) through almost 360 degrees of motion in three dimmensions, but because they do not train limited ROMs they cannot approach powerlifting numbers on the Big Three. All strength is specific to the movements on which it is trained to a greater or lesser extent. It's just a matter of how you orient your training.
Much respect to you for what you have achieved in your training, but have the same respect for those who have gone just as far in another direction.

Yes and I'm not the one on here calling people lardasses :)
I never disrespect anyone til it is deserved. I felt you were calling me a lardass with a quarter rep range I just showed you a pic to prove you other wise. As for the Gymanst Hell No I could not do that as he could not bench almost 900 pounds shirted or Raw.
But I do respect him for that. I did an exhibition lift this past weekend where I did 700 pounds, but then I seen a member of our Army do a 1 handed 2 finger push up for 5 full push ups. There is no way in hell I would even try that with 2 hands. I shook his hand and told him that was by far one of the most impressive things I ever seen.

disrespect rolls down hill like the proverbial ball of shit on message boards. In this instance it started when a bunch of people responded to the planche video with disparaging comments towards gymnasts, and claimed powerlifters were infinitely superior. Of course, people who are more into bodyweight strength fired back with disparaging comments towards powerlifters. You didn't do anything to deserve the insults coming your way it's just the way things went down, and I don't blame you for responding in kind.
If you ever get injured and can't lift huge weights anymore, give bodyweight strength a try (this is how I found my way to gymnastic training, after a sumo DL injury), you will find that it offers challenges and rewards that are quite similar to those of max singles in basic compound lifts. Namely, full body strain, and the potential for incremental and infinite progress.

I've been watching this thread and these yahoo's have been blasting me thinking I was referring to functional strength, it's been quite comical sitting from the outside looking in watching these people (Beast and Magoo) make asses of themselves. While function is just a SMALL part, they fail to see the big picture.
But since Magoo and Beast make fun of me as if they were "experts", I'll just kick back and let them figure it out. LOL!

In junior high I could walk on my hands for longer than a city block.
That just shows that if I could own everybody on here back when I weighed 110, I surely must be one of the strongest guys ever now that I am 220.
Take that world.

When you can hold yourself in an ironcross come down into an L (I don't know gymnastic term, sorry) then come up backwords into a handstand without snapping all four muscles in both rotator cuffs.....come see me.
Or better yet......the acrobats. Watch these guys, freaking incredible strength and balance. Try holding lets say a 75lbs DB at a maybe a 45 degree angle and see if you can do it. I'll put that same challenge to any powerlifter as well. BETTER YET, look at the youtube I posted and watch the angle that these guys are holding they're partners with, it would snap ANYONES rotator cuff, labrum and complete shoulder girdle on here. THAT is beyond just functional strength.
-
I want you to watch this at the 57 sec mark and the 2:05 mark
I've seen better clips but this is pretty good.

Funtional strength is being able to dig a hole or chop down a tree.
I don't think I will ever "need" to bench press a half naked man while he is doing a handstand.
Well I guess that is functional strength to Bay or Your MAAAAAAAA.

sorry coach, you have no idea.
functional strength, as pointed out to you, is relative but no matter what type of athlete you are, the best way to increase functional strength is with progressively heavier weights.
what you and shifted are talking about is sports specific strength re gymnastics. put it this way, if a fighter can throw a punch with thousands of pounds of force does that make him the strongest athlete alive? hell no, it just means he's learnt how to put his whole body with momentum into a punch. what about a sprinter and the thousands of pounds of power a sub 10 second 100 metre sprinter can generate each time his foot makes contact with the ground?
you get it yet?
get your head out of your ass and stop confusing technique, balance and sports specific strength with strength. as a personal trainer one would think this would be clear. or maybe you think you're a gymnastics coach now ???... ;D

Did you miss this?
no, i didn't miss it.
by your reasoning rom is everything when the reality it's not, otherwise those who practise yoga would be the strongest athletes in the world since they would have the greatest rom.
it's a silly argument and scientifically flawed since muscle contracts on an all or nothing basis, meaning that it doesn't partially contract based on partial movement. if it did none of us would be able to stand upright, never mind perform any movement.
-

I agree with you on this one too mate - it's strength vs power
Gymnasts have the strength to hold each other at different positions (pardon the dodgy way I put it ;D), but they don't have the power to lift a huge weight or push / lift something heavy.
Simply put, power equates to using strength to move a load from point A to point B - in other words, doing work (functional or not). As for the other guy who talks about powerlifters using partial ROM - get real dude. There's a few of them who do that for sure, but a lot of them (and others) use a full ROM
Plus, strength is relative whereas power is absolute - a woman would be called strong if she benched 2 plates, but she wouldn't have the power to bench or squat what someone like Wolfy does cause he's got more power and is far stronger.
-

Are you talking about the time when you replied back saying, "Why would you want to do that ??? - I always stay close to my man"?
-
Another important difference between powerlifters and Bodyweight strength athletes is that powerlifters try to capitalize on momentum (maybe not quite as much as olympic lifters) but bodyweight athletes try to lift without the aide of momentum, no swing.
try to do a muscle up like this (beginning of the clip), without any jerk and see for yourself how much harder it is:

exactly, strength is strength. it's not dependant on anything.
i suspect your understanding might help to reason why you have ten times more muscle mass than shitshape, but then he's probably 'functionally stronger' than you. ::)

Yeah, the absolute strength of someone can't be simply compared to that of another person cause various other factors come into play - such as your bodyweight (or muscle size or gender or whatever). So in proportion, a person who benches twice their bodyweight would be inherently stronger than a person who can only do 1.5 times their bodyweight.
But your body's power, be it when it comes to pushing a stalled vehicle or doing some lift like the bench press is an easily measurable attribute and should be the judging criteria for measuring where you stand in the overall picture - simply put, a guy who benches 700 lbs is far stronger than a guy who benches 200 lbs, no matter what their BF levels are, or what their bodyweight is.
???

you are comparing apples to oranges even with respect to power as you are failing to consider the influence of torquen (I won't bring up momentum now because I don't want to muddy the waters). Like saying that a 135 lbs bench is just as impressive as a 135 lbs front latteral raise.
-

You keep bring up Torque probably because you think no one here understands what it is and therefore won't dispute you when you say that as the key word. Unfortunately for you, I do ;D
Torque, angular momentum, muscle tensile strength etc etc don't come into play dude - you are stuck in an island with say a handful of people. When there's a huge rock that needs to be moved, you'll have everyone realize in under one second that it's a job for a guy like Wolfy, not for the 5'1" chinese acrobat who can rest his body on his cock, no matter how much noise you make about the acrobat guy being 'functionally stronger' or looks cute in his tight outfit.
Hope that helps.

squat 545 x 4
deadlift 585 x 2 :-*
got any vids
or is your camera broken

You keep bring up Torque probably because you think no one here understands what it is and therefore won't dispute you when you say that as the key word. Unfortunately for you, I do ;D
Torque, angular momentum, muscle tensile strength etc etc don't come into play dude - you are stuck in an island with say a handful of people. When there's a huge rock that needs to be moved, you'll have everyone realise under one second it's for a guy like Wolfy, not for the 5'1" chinese acrobat who can rest his body on his cock.
Hope that helps.
well if you are talking about power as that term is used in physics then yes torque is a factor: Power = Torque x Angular Speed

no offense "benner" but if you are that geeky schmoe that terrorized mcfarland and the women over at Mayhem you are a liar!
Are your thighs still rubbing together when you walk the treadmill?
What about that 28 inch waist and you being a TOP NPC competitor and natural to boot.
You were exposed over there as a skinny little geek.

The bottom line is, we are talking strength, pure and simple. And as with everything else that's an attribute, it's context dependent.
To give you an example, you may be the strongest in your family even though you weight 145 lbs soaking wet (apologies if you really do ;D) and I'm sure your frail, 90 lb mom calls you strong and even thinks that. And she'd be right cause in her frame of reference, you can do some pretty amazing things that she can't do - like open a new jar of peanut butter or lift 2 grocery bags at once (hopefully you can ;D)
But then you go to a powerlifting meet where there's monsters like Wolfy. I don't need to tell you what the reaction would be if you claimed to be 'strong' - if the big guys are really nice as they are most of the times, they'll politely encourage you as long as you don't make a real fool of yourself.
So your gymnasts are cool cause they can do all those things which are impressive. But do most of us grown up guys think that that means they're stronger than a 300 lb NFL player who can bench over 400 lbs? Hardly
-
I don't know what any of you are saying, but how do explain the freakish strength of a country who all day lifts hay bails and heavy equipment and is unreal strong but goes into the gym and can't bench his own bodyweight. Mike Tyson is a good example. He is strong as hell as a puncher and looks like he lifts weights but when it comes down to it he is not very string in the gym. How do you explain a world class powerlifter who can bench 600+, deadlift 900 and squat 900 yet he looses in an armwrestling match against a guy who is sub 200 lbs and has no visible muscle at all. And check out the grip strength of a guy who swings a hammer 8 hours a day against a pro bodybuilder who lifts tons of weights a day. To me functional strength is more impressive than weight room strength. I know if I am ever in a situation where I need to hang onto something for dear life I would rather have functional strength than knowing i can bench 600.

We shold have a getbig powerlifting contest in conjunction with the bb contest.
bench squat dead

hahahahha, funny thing is that you don't have either type of strength now. :D

First i never start any problems with anyone on any boards they attack me. Yes my thighs rub "bleed" when i walk the tradmill, yes I am a top Npc competitior with a small waist but that does not mean i am a skinny geek i am 220 lb at 5 9 with melvin type waist i just have good genetics so what, but my lifts are true and if anyone wants proof come to the gym

More like a digression to make a point that you've obviously missed.
Let's put it simply - there's you who benches 315 at a bodyweight of 150lb and your friend Wolfy who benches 700 at 500 lbs (sorry Wolfe ;D). You both are pinned under a car that weighs 500 lbs. Guess what - Wolfy will push the car away and will have to rescue your ass, no matter how loudly you scream "But I'm stronger - I can bench twice my bodyweight and you can't" while you are still pinned under you car.

shifted shapes doesn't bench anywhere near 315.

Hahahahaha I didn't have the heart to mention he's upto benching half his bodyweight, after it's public knowledge that he weighs about as much as a pre-pubescent, anorexic schoolgirl does.
To make up for it though, we have Onlymen 8)

hey, sometimes the employees try to close the store a few minutes early to go home. I can picture onlyme using all of the "functional strength" on the door handle keeping them from locking up.

how does this contradict anything that I have said? please provide a quote.
why didn't you acknowledge that you were wrong about torque?

Giving the benefit of the doubt, but come on..

when you factor in the internet mass monster curve..it is totally possible
hell, several guys on here think that 405 bench press for a couple of reps is nothing for a natty under 185lbs

I have never made such a claim. Admit to lying or provide a quote....it should be simple if I said it, just search my posts for 475.

475. come one shitshape, that's too easy. a guy like you that can lift his huge 145lb self through space in a full rom should make light work of a meagre 475lb deadlift. you know, with all that 'torque' you got in your masturbating hand.
-
sorry coach, you have no idea.
functional strength, as pointed out to you, is relative but no matter what type of athlete you are, the best way to increase functional strength is with progressively heavier weights.
what you and shifted are talking about is sports specific strength re gymnastics. put it this way, if a fighter can throw a punch with thousands of pounds of force does that make him the strongest athlete alive? hell no, it just means he's learnt how to put his whole body with momentum into a punch. what about a sprinter and the thousands of pounds of power a sub 10 second 100 metre sprinter can generate each time his foot makes contact with the ground?
you get it yet?
get your head out of your ass and stop confusing technique, balance and sports specific strength with strength. as a personal trainer one would think this would be clear. or maybe you think you're a gymnastics coach now ???... ;D
LOL...oh, I think I have a pretty good idea. The term "sport specific" has been mis-labeled, that term implies that certain movements and movement patterns are specific to individual sports. "Funtional" training as you are describing in your post, is more accuratly represented as more "sports general" than anything. This school of thought views most sports as far more similar than different. Movements such as sprinting, striking, jumping and moving laterally are general skills that apply to many sports. For example, a sports generalist believes that speed training for football and baseball might be similar, as torso training for golf, hockey and tennis. Functional training is looks at the commonalities of sport and reinforces them. Functional training is training the movement.
When I train an ATHLETES, I train the movement before I get too concerned about they're strength, my philosophy has always been in training athletes is to train for joint integrity first before I jump into any type of explosive movements, now you have to understand that this is for the athlete that is just starting out, for my advanced athletes, I usually have them go through physical testing before I just throw them into a power rack or whatever.
Now before you call bullshit on my protocol, think about this. If I have an athlete that has a huge monitary contract and i just start him or her with weight they cannot handle and they get hurt.........it's MY ASS.
-
AHAHHAH!!! Lemme sum it up:
Gymnasts are stupid queers, powerlifters/bodybuilders would crush any and all gymnasts, functional strength is gay and Wolfe or Billy are probably the strongest on Getbig.....done and done.
-
hahahahha, funny thing is that you don't have either type of strength now. :D
hahaha the first time you have ever said anything that is right
-
The gymnasts and acrobats (especially the acrobats) are far beyond just "functional" when I say that they are stronger, I mean they are stronger when it comes to stabilization, No doubt Mike Wolff is the strongest on this board when it comes to frontal plane exercises, but the gymnast and acrobat are strong from all planes and that includes holding loads that might be equivlant to them doing as heavy of a load as Mike if that makes sense.
What these guys do takes alot more than balance. It's alot easier to get a gymnast to do a deadlift (pound for pound) than it would be for Mike to do a gymnasts move.

Do you think the gymnasts shoot a bigger load than big mike?
Whats your take on that coach?

That could be an interesting point for discussion, the correlation between load volume, and size/strength.

excuse me? coach you're the one talking about your ass and shooting loads.

oh, so now you're talking about stabilizer strength, as in core strength, rotators, etc, because ummm you don't need stabilizer strength to bench 800lbs do you?
and wtf has a beginner to weight training have to do with this discussion ???
we are talking about pure strength here coach, not your ass. you made the statement that gymnasts were stronger than anyone her (including guys like wolfe) which is pure bullshit any way you want to dress it.
yes, stabilizer strength is essential to just about every sport ie core strength is essential to a sprinter or fighter, but wtf has that got to do with who is the strongest. i'm sure the little league tee ball players have great core strength, are you going to say they're stronger than wolfe too? why not, makes about as much strength.
i am not a p/lifter. in fact, being built like wolfe would be suicide to my sport but i know that he is way stronger than me, despite the fact that i'm pretty sure he can't do some of the things i can.
strength is strength and when one is talking about the 'strongest' there is no such thing as relativity or functionality.
what i'm very surprised about, is that an apparently qualified personal trainer that has been involved in the industry for a long time can not grasp this fact. muscle contracts against progressively greater loads it gets stronger. it contracts all or nothing and doesn't depend on rom. this is not a debatable issue, this is scientific fact. that's it and that's all, everything else is semantics.
