Arnold was very strong, 365 pound bench for a couple of reps, 400 pound squats and 300 pound bb rows, very good strength for the time.
When was this, in his teens or middle to late twenties? And what weight do you think, 250lb?those were his real lifts in his prime whether you want to accept it or not.
those were his real lifts in his prime whether you want to accept it or not.
those were his real lifts in his prime whether you want to accept it or not.
Wow...good bench, but he never went any heavier than that? You'd never hear much about his poundages, or about his REAL nutrition programs, at that...a 365 bench is very good for most anyone and he ate a lot of eggs, milk, beef, chicken and all the staples back then.

Exactly, theres a lot of discussion, some are rediculous, 500lb bench, ''I wouldnt put it past him'', and other crap etc, what I would like see is some info on his real lifts, theres a bit about his routines.the only thing Arnold ever did with a 500 pound bench was watch someone else do one or read about one.
I dunno man, I mean it's possible, he could of been very watery and bulked so I wouldn't put it past him!!!! I've done near that for a couple of reps, so I don't have any problems with Arnold doing it!!!! ;D::) got any proof of your monster bench or was your camera broken too?
Hey Chem. I read the post you directed me to. Bravo to you...Thanks, just having fun writing some crazy stuff.
Pollux...excellent...you are the master here.
Anyway what about you Pollux any info on this?
Excellent. Always cool to see rare Arnold shots.
Pollux again comes through 8) I'd bet that anything that Pollux doesn't know about Arnold is not worth knowing.
Pollux, after all the pictures I've seen, I feel Arnold's best combo of size and shape was at the 74 Olympia. Even his legs were much bigger and all around he looked fuller and thicker, with good cuts, than ever before. Would you agree?
Yes, Pollux...much appreciated.
Wag's Gym...I like the lamp. It's still a gym???
Pollux...about a year ago I read in MM or some other mag about Kurt Marnul selling some of the actual equipment Arnold starting his training on.
It apparently went to a gym or museum in another country...you remember the details?
Marnul had a cheesy car with blown up photographs of him and Arnold from 40 years ago painted/embossed on it....
the only thing Arnold ever did with a 500 pound bench was watch someone else do one or read about one.
I knew some people on here would appreciate 'em, like GoneAway and Moosejay.
definately! i see ur making good use of IronAge and the "Arnold pics" thread. :)
I know what you're talking about. It was FLEX magazine July 2007 issue.
In a nutshell...Kurt sold the equipments as well as old photographs and training notebooks for $66,000.00 to a man who says he was gonna store them in a Schwarzenegger-like museum in Romania. Kurt sold to be able to buy modern machines.
Didn't Rnold supposedly bone Diane Bennett? Does anyone have a pic of her?
Too bad Marnul could not hold on to them....I would have.
it's quite amazing how many connections and how much exposure Arnold was getting from as early as '65 and '66. the guy obviously had something special mentally and physically to attract 'buyers' so to speak, of which they would use him to their benefit and vice verca. Wag, Weiders, Park, who else?
On the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson years ago Arnold stated his best lifts for bench squat and maybe dead, someone should see if it is on Youtube.....bullshit.
He said his best bench was 540#, and with his chest that is very believable.
I was thinking the same thing. From the moment he started lifting weights, they obviously say something special in Arnold for him to have so much exposure starting with Albert Busek's Kraft Sport Revue. Are you aware that "Pollux" is one of the famous stars in the constellation of Gemini?
There are just so many very, very early pictures of Arnold!
bullshit.
How can Squadfather claim Bullshit when the man had a 60" fucking chest and what looked like to be carved out of granite. He trained with one of the strongest bodybuilders of all time (Franco) and I'm sure Franco pushed Arnold to get as strong as he possibly could and did.meltdown upon hearing the truth, even Coleman's chest wasn't 60 inches at 290 pounds and Ronnie himself would struggle with a 540 pound one rep bench, Arnold's real chest measurement=52 inches and real bench press=405 pounds for 1 rep, still VERY GOOD.
With all do respect Squad, you act as though you were there with Arnold when he did his MAX bench, which we all know you weren't.

I searched high and low for these pics. Enjoy, bitches! 8)Why was he wearing posing trunks to train? Freedom of movement maybe?
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w142/Flex2000/indexCAVSJ9M3.jpg
In the Arnold Encyclopedia, Arnold states that he benched 500 for reps.
He also states in the March '67 issue of Health & Strength that he gets 10 hours of sleep with no nicotine or alcohol. But we all know about those infamous Octoberfest days. ;D
Pollux, are you suggesting that the great Arnold was known to bend the rules on occasion? ;D

Arnold only able to do one rep with 405???
You are a moron and a fat disgrace...
I'm not standing up for the fattie by any means, but I've NEVER seen a picture of Arnold benching that much, and I have seen MANY, MANY pictures of The King over MANY, MANY years.Just because you've never seen a pic doesn't mean anything. He'd have to be very weak to possess the size he did and not be able to bench 405 for several reps.
hahahahhaa, sounds like we've got another Arnie guy's feelings hurt, Pollux. ;Dhave another twinkie and take a nap, fat ass

Mike Katz had a legit 60 inch chest...granted...much of it was ribcage...but resoundingly impressive, nonetheless.got any proof?
Well, no. But, sometimes, I choose to take someone of their word. There are stills those with honor.until i see proof................... ..........i........gotta .......call.......boolsh eeet. :D
hahahahhaa, sounds like we've got another Arnie guy's feelings hurt, Pollux. ;D
I swing from Arnold's nuts left and right, but I'm siding with you about the whole bench press deal.like i said before, Arnold was INCREDIBLE but those are his real stats, what makes me really laugh is how guys on here make it sound as if a 405 pound bench and 20 inch arms are some kind of insult as if every average Joe Schmoe walking the streets has that. ::)

Wag Bennett and Arnold in front of Wag's gym then...

it is england or usa there?
I'm not saying the 405 lbs. bench wasn't feasible for him, knucklehead. It's the 500 lbs.+ I'm having some doubts about.SF stated 405 for one rep and you agreed with him.
SF stated 405 for one rep and you agreed with him.sounds like you've got a lot of emotion invested in this, "benny". ;D
idiot
sounds like you've got a lot of emotion invested in this, "benny". ;Dlooks to me like you're the one with a lot invested since you are demanding "proof", "Squadfather". ::)
until i see proof................... ..........i........gotta .......call.......boolsh eeet. :D
But...do you believe a 60 inch chest is possible(muscular, obviously)?sure it is, guys like Bill Kazmaier and a few other guys have achieved it at 320 pounds bodyweight but no fuccking way did Arnold or Mike Katz achieve it, not while the grass is green and the sky is blue.
SF stated 405 for one rep and you agreed with him.

Ummmm...I wouldn't say Pollux is an idiot. If he believes Arnold never bench pressed 405 for more than one rep in his life, Pollux most certainly is...
In fact, I'd believe most of what he says before any other re Arnold....particularly with his memory, knowledge, and the fact that he is such a big fan.

That's what I said Benny Blanco. I wasn't agreeeing with "SF", just that I have never seen a pic of Arnold doing that amount of weight was all. You really came across looking like an ass on this one. :-\you
Read between the lines before you post. Oh, and who was the idiot again? :D
I don't think that is what he is inferring.
I'm not standing up for the fattie by any means, but I've NEVER seen a picture of Arnold benching that much, and I have seen MANY, MANY pictures of The King over MANY, MANY years.
Here is your response to me, with a quote from my disagreement SPECIFICALLY about the "more than one rep with 405" issue. This sure seems like an agreement with the fat man to me.
dummy
No, don't thank me, Pollux.
I thank you for all the awesome info and great pix....keep 'em coming. Don't let the negativity hinder you.
Not at all. They'll keep coming, trust me. ;)
I provide facts and opinions to the best of my ability based on bodybuilding's favorite son - Arnold! Members like yourself and GoneAway are those I know appreciate such info and pics. :)
That...and he liked to prank on Mike alot :)
OK. I need to stop with this Blanco the Clown character. He's just not getting it at all. ::)Apology accepted.
Pollux....here's a challenge for you.
I remember a photo of Big Mike sitting between A and Franco, with his arms around their shoulders, and Mike holding his chest up high....you have that? Can we see it?
Moose
I know the pic you're talking about, and I'm very sure it's in one of my magazines. I'd have to go through The Arnie Vault and find it though. If I have time, I'll take a pic and post it.
I find it funny how people argue over Arnold. How do you argue with success. And it isn't a flash-in-a-pan type of success. It is success that has endured over 35 years. Lets just say the you guys prove Arnold only benched 405 at the most in his career. What does that do. NOTHING. Do you think the tens of millions of fans he has worldwide are all of a sudden going to say they hate him for being a liar. This is not like a Goodrum who has been hated all his life and he tries to tell lies so people will like him or respect him. No body anywhere will ever respect or like Goodrum (except Vissy) no matter how much bullshit spews from his flappy lips. Same with Arnold no matter what you say about him no one is going to change their mind about him. Arnold made BB. Without someone like Arnold with his body and his personality the Weiders would no way in the world be in the position they are in. Sure BB would have gone on but I highly doubt it would have gone in the direction Arnold sent it. He was the perfect marketing machine for BB at the time when it was just getting off the ground.
Hey Chem.Good enough for me. I trust those who were actually there in the gym with Arnold while he trained. Not so much people just looking at photos.
Yeah...I recall something along that vein re Franco.
Literally just got off the phone with Mike Katz...here is what he said, verbatim:
-His chest, at its largest, was a hair above 60"
-He saw Arnold do "just over 400"....370 was more common for Arnold to work up to. He wasn't always shooting for the highest weights...Arnold's hallmark was purity of form.
That's what Big Mike told me...just now. He has no care or reason to lie.
Prove it? I can't ...he can't...but his word is his bond. I will go with that.
Moose
Hey Chem.Thanks. So you're real good friends with Mike, I met him a few times and he was really nice. I would tend to believe him as well.
Yeah...I recall something along that vein re Franco.

Jesus, how much is that?
If I can remember I will make a phone call tomorrow to someone who not only has written many articles on Arnold, trained during that time, is a Hall of Fame member but he won't lie. And he may very well have some photos of Arnold benching heavy. He has 1000's of pictures from that era. I will just ask him how much Arnold has benched. he has nothing to gain or lose from his response.
