Title: Poll: Young Adults Turn Toward GOP
Post by: Dos Equis on March 09, 2010, 03:12:35 PM
Will be interesting to see what effect they have on the 2010 elections.

Poll: Young Adults Turn Toward GOP
Tuesday, 09 Mar 2010

Young adults between 18 and 29 are anxious about being able to pay for their educational, housing and health care needs. Those are findings from a new poll that suggests many worry they will never be better off than their parents.

The poll by Harvard's Institute of Politics found that six out of 10 of those surveyed worry they may not meet their current bills and obligations. Nearly half of those attending college wonder whether they will be able to afford to stay in school. And more than eight out of 10 said they expect difficulty finding a job after graduation.

Politically, young Republicans are more motivated to vote in the 2010 election than those who described themselves as Democrats. A majority approves of President Barack Obama, but not his handling of top issues.

It's weird how NewsMax would have this story but not a link to the actual poll

Maybe they don't want their audience to look at the source material and draw their own conclusions

In general, do you approve or disapprove of the job performance of:
12. Barack Obama as President?

Total: 4-Year
18-29 College
Approve.......................................................... 58% 57%
Disapprove ........................ ........................ ..... 39% 42%
Refused ........................ ........................ .......... 3% 1%
13. The Democrats in Congress?
Total: 4-Year

18-29 College
Approve.......................................................... 35% 35%

What's weird is when you get into issues there is higher disapproval rating which seems incongruent with the 58% approval rating above:

Now, thinking specifically about Barack Obama, do you approve or disapprove of the way he is handling:
15. Health care?
Total: 4-Year
18-29 College
Approve................. ........................ ................. 44% 44%
Disapprove ........................ ........................ ..... 52% 53%
Refused ........................ ........................ .......... 4% 3%

This question is interesting

I wonder why NewsMax didn't use the headline that a majority of college students don't consider themselves to be Born Again Christians:

43. Which one of these best describes your religious preference?
Total: 4-Year
18-29 College
Catholic ........................ ........................ .......... 22% 20%
Protestant.............. ........................ .................. 14% 20%

No religious preference.............. .................... 20% 20%
Not sure.................... ........................ .............. 4% 3%
Decline to answer.................. ........................ . 11% 8%
[If “Catholic, Protestant, Fundamentalist/Evangelical, or another religion,” in Q43 ask]
44. Do you consider yourself a born-again Christian?

Total: 4-Year

(n=1,388) (n=272)
Yes ........................ ........................ ................. 37% 36%

It really shouldn't be about Blaming BUSH or even Obama at this point.  We should be blaming all our politicians.  They sat on both parties and got corrupt and fat and did nothing to stop the direction we were going.  "Bammer" is just doing the same things Bush was told to do.

well to be fair the Repubs used reconciliation to pass the Bush Tax Cuts I and II and only a few Dems voted for it

I think those two bills alone cost us ~ 1.8 trillion (could be wrong on that # - just going from memory)

Exactly, why does congress get a free pass? They play this BS game that its all the POTUS fault when they control the money. They are just as culpable if not more so for sitting there and voting for all this insane shit.

I don't know what to make of the current Republican Party.  No true leader, no clear message.  They have a golden opportunity in 2010, and I'm not sure they will be able to take advantage of it.  They need to come up with a definitive plan on how to fix this mess.

Democrats too.

Something else that's weird is that there is no author listed on that article.

I was going to email the author and ask him/her to explain how they read that poll and arrived at such a misdleading title.

Hmmmmm - I wonder why NewsMax doesn't bother to link the source material for their stories and doesn't even list the author of the article.

Seems weird for a "News" organization

Agreed.  I think people generally like Obama, particularly young people...but many are not happy with the state of politics (which stinks on both sides and has become increasingly inflammatory and polarized) and don't favor hard left agendas.  There are probably more kids who are open to progressive ideas but as the debt mounts and taxes slowly increase, I think people are thinking twice about expanding entitlements and overtaxation for working folks (as college kids are about to enter the workforce).

NO ONE blamed him for the economy. However,we can blame him for making it worse!Ford didnt take a dime from Obama, take a look at how they are doing compared to GM.The stimulus is actually a hinderance as is  the permanent extending of unemployment benefits,as is the threat of health care as is the threat of cap and trade as is the threat of card check as is the threat of tax increases.

The economy went into a recession, but Obamas policies are making it much much much worse then it had to be.

By the way the democrats had access to the same intel as Bush did, their conclusion?Saddam has WMDs.Clintons conclusuion?Saddam had WMDs.Gores conclusion?Clinton had WMDs.This wasnt a lie,it was poor intel.

The head of the CIA reports to the DNI who is appointed by the POTUS. I'm not going to get into a long debate about this because well its been done before. Everyone focus's on WMD when there was a laundry list of reasons for going into Iraq, the cease fire agreement being broken is first and foremost in my opinion. Was the contiuation of the Iraq war illegal? No. Was it a bad idea and shitty timing? Yes.

Laundry list?  And that justifies the loss of American lives?  Breaking some agreement thousands of miles away doesn't justify in my mind any loss of american lives.  IMO, BUSH was irresponsible in his handling of Iraq.  We had war fever and he took advantage of it.

You can try to spin it anyway you want, but some agreement was a cease fire agreement. The gulf war did not end in an Iraqi surrender, we just stopped blowing them up and called for cease fire. Now if you think its OK for them to paint our jets with lasers and fire missles at them, when they agreed not to.......

Now I'm not saying Iraq was the smart move because it wasn't, and it's not hard to find info from those with boots on the ground about all the shit that was found in Iraq. You see the problem is Iraq did not have a delivery system, therefore the "WMD" can not be classified as such.

IMHO opinion every war the US has been in since WWII has been handled irresponsibly by politicians. I believe in total war, if you are going to fight you may as well do it right. Winning hearts and minds is a dumbass strategy that has yet to work, you kill em until they loose the will to fight, they might not like you but they will respect you and think twice about fucking with you a second time.

I'm not trying to spin anything.  You and I are closer to agreeing about this than you may think.  I don't think it was smart move or executed smartly.

Finding justification is easy.  America found it in the WMD's that did not exist because even after 9/11 breaking "rules and agreements weren't good enough for the american people to lose lives over.   The question is, does Iraq justify the loss of thousands of american lives?  I say no.  Period.  Afghanistan, Yes.  Iraq, no way.

Its getting hard to say that he isnt making it worse or that he is not hindering recovery. The stock market collapsed under his watch 22%, after it had remained relatively calm for threee months under Bush after the fall panic. Unemployment has accelerated under his watch. He inherited this recession when it was 13 months old, which is when most recessions end.  It is now about 27 months old. The stock market is now back up in the 10000 range. Shoudnt job losses have atleast stopped? Speculation is that companies are waiting to hire with items such as Obamacare on the table becuase they want to know what thier expenses are going to be. You have to atlease admit that the burden of proof is on him in regards to whether or not the stimulus worked, and you have to admit that he made a bad decision trying to tackle healthcare reform when what we need are jobs.

Hysterical - they are direct clips from obama and those around him.   This is not glen beck or rush but Obama right from his mouth admitting to everything I have claimed.

Like I said they found all the ingredients to make the WMD, they just weren't combined and put ina delivery system, you can take that for what its worth. More than likely as soon as the heat was off Sadam would begin production of WMD again, but we will never know for sure.

If we ( the UN coalition, whatever you want to call it) had done things right in 91, we would not have needed/wanted to go back. We go to war we fight and then let the "bad guy" off the hook in the end, seems counter productive to me.

Doesn't every country have ingredients to make WMD's?  Even if Saddam had started making them it doesn't justify American lives unless he used them which he wouldn't.  Why?  Because he was a thug in charge.  And the last thing a thug in charge wants to do is lose his thug in charge-ness.

I also Agree that we should have finished the job in 91.

Posting a video of Cheney doesn't mean shit, he was wrong. It had nothing to do with a quagmire, The UN on down only wanted him out of Kuwait. They also feared that if Saddam was removed it would destabalize the region, Iraq and Iran already had a long bloody war. Iran might want a little pay back with the Iraqi strongman gone.
