Some please help me understand this as I'm 31 now and been out of high school too long to understand kids today...
I understand this thread will get negative really quick...I'm not understanding why this is and has been like this for so long...I mean we're talking about freaking high school...
Myself, Parker, G-thang, Dr. Kadje, Mal, Benny Blanco (I think), and Bay are all college grads...I cant speak of others because I don't know...This shit makes me sad...I wish there were a simple answer but I'm quite baffled by the numbers...What makes us different from others?

An achievement gap separating black from white students has long been documented — a social divide extremely vexing to policy makers and the target of one blast of school reform after another.

But a new report focusing on black males suggests that the picture is even bleaker than generally known.

Only 12 percent of black fourth-grade boys are proficient in reading, compared with 38 percent of white boys, and only 12 percent of black eighth-grade boys are proficient in math, compared with 44 percent of white boys.

Poverty alone does not seem to explain the differences: poor white boys do just as well as African-American boys who do not live in poverty, measured by whether they qualify for subsidized school lunches.

The data was distilled from highly respected national math and reading tests, known as the National Assessment for Educational Progress, which are given to students in fourth and eighth grades, most recently in 2009. The report, “A Call for Change,” is to be released Tuesday by the Council of the Great City Schools, an advocacy group for urban public schools.

Although the outlines of the problem and many specifics have been previously reported, the group hopes that including so much of what it calls “jaw-dropping data” in one place will spark a new sense of national urgency.

“What this clearly shows is that black males who are not eligible for free and reduced-price lunch are doing no better than white males who are poor,” said Michael Casserly, executive director of the council.

The report shows that black boys on average fall behind from their earliest years. Black mothers have a higher infant mortality rate and black children are twice as likely as whites to live in a home where no parent has a job. In high school, African-American boys drop out at nearly twice the rate of white boys, and their SAT scores are on average 104 points lower. In college, black men represented just 5 percent of students in 2008. :-X :-X :-X

The analysis of results on the national tests found that math scores in 2009 for black boys were not much different than those for black girls in Grades 4 and 8, but black boys lagged behind Hispanics of both sexes, and they fell behind white boys by at least 30 points, a gap sometimes interpreted as three academic grades.

The search for explanations has recently looked at causes besides poverty, and this report may further spur those efforts.

“There’s accumulating evidence that there are racial differences in what kids experience before the first day of kindergarten,” said Ronald Ferguson, director of the Achievement Gap Initiative at Harvard. “They have to do with a lot of sociological and historical forces. In order to address those, we have to be able to have conversations that people are unwilling to have.”

Those include “conversations about early childhood parenting practices,” Dr. Ferguson said. “The activities that parents conduct with their 2-, 3- and 4-year-olds. How much we talk to them, the ways we talk to them, the ways we enforce discipline, the ways we encourage them to think and develop a sense of autonomy.”

The report urges convening a White House conference, encouraging Congress to appropriate more money for schools and establishing networks of black mentors.

What it does not discuss are policy responses identified with a robust school reform movement that emphasizes closing failing schools, offering charter schools as alternatives and raising the quality of teachers.

The report did not go down this road because “there’s not a lot of research to indicate that many of those strategies produce better results,” Mr. Casserly said.

Other have a different response. The key to narrowing the achievement gap, said Dr. Ferguson, is “really good teaching.”

One large urban school district that has made progress is Baltimore’s, where the dropout rate for African-American boys declined to 4.9 percent during the last academic year, down from 11.9 percent three years earlier. Graduation rates for black boys were also up: 57 percent in 2009-10, compared with 51 percent three years earlier.

Andres A. Alonso, the chief executive of the Baltimore City Public Schools, said the improvement had little to do with changes at the margins, like lengthening the school day or adding mentors. Rather, Mr. Alonso cited aggressively closing failing schools, knocking on the doors of dropouts’ homes to lure them back and creating real-time alerts — “almost like an electrical charge” — when a student misses several days of school.

“Hispanic kids and African-American kids this year had a lower dropout rate than white kids,” Mr. Alonso said.

Wigglet........all I'm gonna say about this is it is the "black culture" fault.......meaning black heros are the gangsters and rappers and drug dealers.........so young black kids want that, don't want to be Cliff Huxtable........that's too hard, being a piece of shit is easy.

Educated parents play a major role in how well a child develops, especially the mother.

Truth you might wanna add the nfl and nba but that might end wiggs quasi racist theories.

Point is black americans and whites live in completely different worlds. expecting the same results with very different culture, isnt realistic.

Theres loads of shit that shows black students tend not to value academics or take the right approaches etc.

g_thang is a college grad?  :D

Just kidding chico, I know this is just your "gimmick" and you play dumb.
At least in the US, everyone has a bachelors degree. It's like a HS diploma was 20 years ago. Kids are deluded into thinking that once they get that piece of paper it's your ticket to millions, sunshine, and gumdrops. I'm a moron and I got one. Most jobs where you want to make more than 10 bucks an hour requires one( a college degree), now.

im gonna give you the answer, and it simple

your communities are failing yourselves, young blacks are having babies like buying a new pair of shoes, and then pawning the children off to the grandparent......or on parent raising them alone..............black children are being raised with the wrong role models, they are raised by their peers and rappers to think that trying in school means your a sellout uncle tom

and heres the catch.............no one is saying this..............no one is being honest and saying the truth: BLACK PARENTS ARE FAILING BLACK CHILDREN

instread they blame the teachers..........adn blame the schools.........and demand more money be pumped into the schools

which is bullshit......teachers jobs are to TEACH......not fucking raise dilenquent children.

a childs development consists of an equation betweeen the parents teaching discipline and life skills.........and the teacher teaching academic stuff

black parents are not fufilling their end of the bargain, and the teachers are tryin to teach animals..........and instead of anyone callin gout the parents they call out the teachers...........and demand more money be pumped into the schools

if parents are doing their job..........children should have the discipline to learn in a fucking one room school house............a desk, a black board, and a book........THATS IT

my grandparents all went ot school in one room schoolhouses, and they learned..........because they were disciplined to sit and learn

its so much easier to keep blaming teachers and keep blaming not enough money being pumped into the schools..........cause peopel are afraid to acknowledge the root............which is bad parenting

again, if children are correctly raised by their parents...........they could learn under ANY circumstances........... ..

but these crooked black politicians are gonan keep demanding more money for inner city schools, and it will continue to go to waster.........cause that is not the problem

The apparent pointlessness of a degree I think effect black kids. Also the lack of people from their parents generation with degree who also advocate them also is part of it.

College isn't about getting a degree, it's about expanding your mind, learning to think logically, problem solve and work in situations similar to the real world (i.e. group projects, public speaking etc).  The degree is just a piece of paper, the experience is more important.  While I'm a firm believer college isn't for everyone, I do think it's important beyond just the paper for many people.  Hell, even going to a community college is a huge plus to someone who has only a HS education.

BTW only around 18% percent of people have a Bachelor's degree, 6% Masters and 3% PhD, or equal.....
They aren't as common as you think, they Bachelor's don't  mean that much anymore cause they are more common....

There are lies and then there are statistics. Black Americans make up 12% of the total U.S. population with White Americans making up the vast majority. Using a population sample from each you're gonna have a skewed result that whites out perform blacks. Of course.. you have more white kids to draw from to justify your position. Also more white parents are able to afford to not only send their kids to good schools but also have the time to nurture their kids educational pursuits. How many of "us" here were latch key kids? How many of us had to take our own initiative in doing our homework and studying? I'm in my 30's as well and I'm sure Wiggs, Mal, Parker can agree with me that we grew up during a very different time than today. When it comes to articles such as these I choose not to read them. It's the same as knowing that people set you up to fail then blame you for failing..
Are you saying whites get more hours per day than blacks? How many of "us" (whites) were latchkey kids? How many of us had to take initiative to do our own studying and homework? Difference is when our parents came home they actually checked to make sure our homework was done, they didn't come home and ignore us. It's not about time, it's about not being fuckin lazy as a parent.

your an idiot.............your assuming anthropologists dont understand basic statistics ::) ::) ::)

or how to take averages or interpolate results on a per capita basis

believe it or not, when they do studies,,,,,,,,,,they take into account the fact that blacks are 12-13% of the population ::) ::)

50% of 50 million is the same thing as 50% of 230 million people.............cause it expresses a percentage withing a population that fulfills whatever criteria being studied

Don't forget about me.
 ;D

As much as some black people loathe George Bush, what he said while promoting the "No Child Left Behind" sticks with me to this day: We MUST end the soft bigotry of low expectations.

My mother worked two jobs to put me through private school. Heck, she even ended up learning to drive an 18-wheeler, to save for my education. This was in the 80s, when female truck drivers were few and far in between, and BLACK FEMALE drivers were virtually non-existent.

Politically speaking, that's why I'm for school vouchers. I refuse to believe that black children (or any children, for that matter) should be at the mercy of the unions and goofs who run public schools in the inner cities.

well said!  I think you hit it on the head with this one.   Everywhere I see, I see a young black female with about 5-6 kids, and no father at all in the picture.  these kids have like 3-4 dads.  The moms are on welfare, or trying to get disability.  trying harder to get out of work than actually work.  then they blame the government, etc.  so they keep having kids.

i think there are two major reasons why blacks are falling:

1. single black moms who have no education, who keep having kids.  these kids are basically neglected and have no future to begin with

2.  there is no sence of responsibility in the black community.  nothing is their fault, there is always someone to blame. and they rely to much on others (ie. the goverment) to fix every single problem they have in life.

and also 3, i just don;t think the IQ is all that high, genetically speaking, so if you add 1,2, and 3, that may explain the gap.

I stand by what I said the world that white people and black live in is not the same. The expectation that blacks are gonna want the exact same thing, and do the exact same things to get their as whites is ignoring a huge cultural divide between blacks and whites.

i think liberal white academics, media, celebrities, lawyers, academics, and politicians are to blame as well

casue they have created a culture of dishonesty, where they are SO afraid of offending black people.......or soundin racist.........no truthful dialogue can be established

also the white guilt nanny welfare state whites have created for blacks......whites feel ashamed of their history with balck people ..........so they think the answer is to give them welfare and affirmative action................wh ich i think EVERYONE agrees, is jsut exaccerbating the problem

Lol I think your over estimating the progress they maid before the 60s. They cane together and said we want to be able to do some book learning. hardly the most academic movement in the world.

The point is to think that black people got the same ideas values beliefs and goals as white people is the problem. White people got some fucked up views on money and shit and would rather have a fucking afternoon trip at costco than have kids.

Lol I think your over estimating the progress they maid before the 60s. They cane together and said we want to be able to do some book learning. hardly the most academic movement in the world.

The point is to think that black people got the same ideas values beliefs and goals as white people is the problem. White people got some fucked up views on money and shit and would rather have a fucking afternoon trip at costco than have kids.

im actually not you heard of the great migration where blacks moved from rural south to manufacturing jobs up north in and around WW2

like i said, that created a middle class to an extent........the first generation of blacks to go to college, who became the impetus for the civil rights movement of the 60s

things looked up for a while

and liberalism killed that......welfare was just supposed to "help a generation get off their feet".........now, well, its so deepely entrenched in balck culture , it basically defines it

Wiggs: you want to know the honest truth? your people have no work ethic, or at least very few do, I don't consider myself racist, but I've lived my life and know what I've seen, black kids don't give a shit about school, academics or succeeding.. only sports and rap, either trying to be tupac or the next 'kobe' that's the truth of it. It's sad and depressing but it is what it is.

Wow they went from cotton picking to folding underwear. That's really something, at what point in this migratition north did they all become engineers to work as labour. This is the shit your leaving out. Welfare shit or not blacks wouldn't be much better off.

People that think white men just deicded in since you were born to get educated and get high paying jobs your out to lunch.

If you got some average whiteman from 1800 he'd be out in the woods trying to start a fire getting him to wanna fucking work at some IT job just so he could afford a mazda really wouldn't relate to him.

That's the funniest damn thing i've ever read!!!!!

The black community is in a sad sad state. I to blame the gangstar rapers, athletes, and the other shitheads on t.v for being terrible role models for blacks. All the money these guys make not enough of them give back to the community. They need to start preaching the importance of family. My girlfriend teaches 5th grade at a city school and none of the kids have both parents around. The kids all smell bad their parents don't take care of the kids. I can't imagine how I would turn out with my father gone and if my mom let me run the streets and do whatever I wanted.

There're some really intelligent kids but they don't have the support they need at home to keep them on the right track. It's gonna keep going on like this until the parents start acting like mature adults. Welfare has destroyed the black community.

It's the exact same thing in Africa, pretty much all the countries there, the parents just go on blindly reproducing kids that us white's have to eventually feed and take care of, it's like disposable waste, they have a kid and abandon it..it's f*cking disgusting, any parent that abandons a child should be shot dead, if you're not gonna take care of the kid don't f*cking get pregnant. It's such a fucked up situation, you have people in North America adopting 2-3 African children because their shithead parents didn't want to bother raising them or providing for them.

Because culture don't happen overnight it happens over generation. Of course you can skip that if you look like the higher ups, but if you don't blend in with people of a higher status your not gonna be able to copy their ways. You guys instead of taking the time and effort to understand culture, just spew out some theory, that excludes you from blame.

i agree with this "culture shock" idea

the fact is the west has been settling in cities, and running agrarian culture, with domesticated animals and archetecture and technology.............f or thousands of years

and what............less they 500 years ago, when the portugese arrived in mainland africa............people there were living NO DIFFERENTLY then caveman did at the beginning of time

.......so all in the course of 400 years, blacks, who throughout ALL of history were living in simple tribal culture.............are supposed to assimilate to 3 or 4 thousand years of european technology, social morays, values, and philosophies............ .......cant happen that quick, they arent physically, socially, or intellectually, or biologically set up to adapt that quickly.
Title: Re: Black education gap looks even bleaker...WTF?

im gonna give you the answer, and it simple

your communities are failing yourselves, young blacks are having babies like buying a new pair of shoes, and then pawning the children off to the grandparent......or on parent raising them alone..............black children are being raised with the wrong role models, they are raised by their peers and rappers to think that trying in school means your a sellout uncle tom

and heres the catch.............no one is saying this..............no one is being honest and saying the truth: BLACK PARENTS ARE FAILING BLACK CHILDREN

instread they blame the teachers..........adn blame the schools.........and demand more money be pumped into the schools

which is bullshit......teachers jobs are to TEACH......not fucking raise dilenquent children.

a childs development consists of an equation betweeen the parents teaching discipline and life skills.........and the teacher teaching academic stuff

black parents are not fufilling their end of the bargain, and the teachers are tryin to teach animals..........and instead of anyone callin gout the parents they call out the teachers...........and demand more money be pumped into the schools

if parents are doing their job..........children should have the discipline to learn in a fucking one room school house............a desk, a black board, and a book........THATS IT

my grandparents all went ot school in one room schoolhouses, and they learned..........because they were disciplined to sit and learn

its so much easier to keep blaming teachers and keep blaming not enough money being pumped into the schools..........cause peopel are afraid to acknowledge the root............which is bad parenting

again, if children are correctly raised by their parents...........they could learn under ANY circumstances........... ..

but these crooked black politicians are gonan keep demanding more money for inner city schools, and it will continue to go to waster.........cause that is not the problem

i think liberal white academics, media, celebrities, lawyers, academics, and politicians are to blame as well

casue they have created a culture of dishonesty, where they are SO afraid of offending black people.......or soundin racist.........no truthful dialogue can be established

also the white guilt nanny welfare state whites have created for blacks......whites feel ashamed of their history with balck people ..........so they think the answer is to give them welfare and affirmative action................wh ich i think EVERYONE agrees, is jsut exaccerbating the problem

blacks made HUGE strides between the 20s, ww2, which created a black middle class............which spurred the civil rights movement of the 60s

they were startin to do well............then all those great society welfare laws were passed..........and all that progressed just fuckign crumbled........now they are incapable of getting their shit together, case they addicted to free housing, free, healthcare, food stamps. ect.............addicted like heroin, now we have multiple generations where this is deeply ingrained, and people can no longer do for themselves

Block's on his game in this thread

It's cultural, it's generational, it's political and it's economic (in that order).

When you come from a culture that glorifies stupidity, blames everyone else for the problems it faces and raises almost three quarters of it's children out of wedlock, you can't spend, read or educate your people out of the hole.

When you have generation upon generation of poverty- the end result of young fuck ups producing more young fuck ups in a perpetual state of low expectations, high incarceration rates, illegitimacy, drug addiction, crime and violence; you can only hope for a handfull of unlikely success stories in the midst of a bottomless pit of wasted lives.

When you mindlessly, relentlessly, moronically and suicidally support the same useless, corrupt and self interested politicians with the same tired, inept and ineffective policies simply because they tell you what you want to hear; It's whiteys fault, it's rich peoples fault, it's FEMA's fault, etc. and then follow that up with buying into promises of free shit, quick fixes and government subsidized handouts, you are using the lines being fed to you in the same way a crack addict uses their final hit; it's a temporary high that will wear off and then force you to kill or rob someone to score your next fix. The difference is that symbolically you are killing another generation of your own people by continuing the cycle of government dependency, laziness and lethargy.

Finally, economics play an obvious role. People with money (or even middle class people) can hire tutors, send their kids to private school etc. Intelligent people that realize their children may not have the aptitude to go to college encourage them to take up a trade. Other intelligent people try to send their children to charter schools. Most blacks can't or don't consider these options because the politicians they mindlessly support are against both practices. However, at the end of the day it comes down to parenting. If the mother works full time and isn't raising the child, who encourages the kid to do his homework or is in constant dialogue with the teacher?

There are a few other things that contribute to the state of blacks in America, but I think these points sum them up.

At this point, you can't make any claim for "blame" on their minority status.

Asians and Indians= minorities too.
But you learn your math from an Asian, go see your Indian doctor, and get your tweeds from your black dealer....

It's the culture.  As long as "studying" makes you an uncle Tom and all your problems are because of "the man," there's not going to be any changes.

Anyone that's in college knows what the "kid that always walks in late" looks like.  They know what the "kid that actually answers cell phone calls in the middle of class" looks like.

Any Engineering, Physics, or Mathematics student knows that any class they take after Differential Equations is going to be a mix of Asian, White, and Indian students.....and that's it,
It's an unfortunate situation that isn't going to change unless society itself "changes."  Between the black culture and white guilt....it'll always be "the man's fault," that minorities are held back....as long as that minority is African American.

I see this shit everyday...and there are different avenues to attack it. And yes, Un-Sung is correct black parents, have failed their kids, or should I say, black mothers have failed their sons. From picking better fathers, to coddling their behavior and helping them grow into Man-Children. From putting more emphasis on looking cool, athletics, and being a player, or entertainment. to thinking that education or being educated is for white people...
When I was in HS, I was frowned on and bullied because I raised my hand in class, as a black male, we are supposed to be "stupid", and other black males, wanted me to fall in line. I was not raised by my parents to be like that.

Odd how in American folklore, John Henry exemplified hardwork, and in the Af American Folklore Br'r Rabbit was known for his quick wit and outsmarting people. In Africa, there are fables of tricksters, intelligent entities that are known for their smarts and the ability to get over on people. Okami, himself has said that the Nigerians, bascially have used the their welfare system to "trick" them. And withing certain Nigerian ethnic groups, it is a badge of honor to see how you get over on people.

Many blacks, going by the Jesse Jackson model, want restitution for slavery---we are too far removed for that to help us. But, our Restitution resides in  free Education. You take that, and then build up your communities.

Problem is, that the Jesse Jacksons and Al Sharptons of th world are part of the reason why blacks have fallen down the rabbit hole, stumbling upon the steps of victimhood. Always searching for Racism, instead of searching for ways to better your position.

And black people, by far have the lowest self esteem of all people. That's why we put each other down for not having the material things that others do.More emphasis is put on the things you have obtained, than what you know. basically being slave, and a slve to an inanimate object is the worse type of slave.

I'm rambling now, and lost my point...

 :-X :-X :-X

Some please help me understand this as I'm 31 now and been out of high school too long to understand kids today...
I understand this thread will get negative really quick...I'm not understanding why this is and has been like this for so long...I mean we're talking about freaking high school...
Myself, Parker, G-thang, Dr. Kadje, Benny Blanco (I think), and Bay are all college grads...I cant speak of others because I don't know...This shit makes me sad...I wish there were a simple answer but I'm quite baffled by the numbers...What makes us different from others?

My perception is that there is an unfortunate mix of factors involved here.

1. Culture: The US "black" culture values money, physical appearance, athletic performance, "hipness" as related to clothes, music and so on. The black culture views school skills as "nerdy" and uncool. Thus, black boys does not dedicate themselves to studying.

2. Family life and early learning:  Many US black kids grow up without their biological father present. Thus, the mother must provide most of the early learning environment for the kids. If she is poor and overworked, she will not have the capacity to provide optimal early learning for the kids

3. Genetics. Intelligence is highly inheritable (this is undisputed) and intelligence is the most important predictor of academic performance. If black women selects men based on the black cultural values such as physical appearance, "coolness"/"hipness" and so on, and not based on intellect, there will be less tendency for highly intellelligent but "nerdy" black males to have children and thus the kids will be less well performing academically. Thus, culture and genetics interact in this unfortunate situation. My perception is that to be a nerd as a black young boy must be very difficult. Is this true? It is said that within the jewish ashkenazi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashkenazi_Jews) community, intelligence has been a very important and highly valued trait and thus selected in male partners. Today, this is the most intelligent ethnical group in the world. Maybe black women should value intelligent men more...? But what is valued is highly cultural. This is a gordian knot.

4. Expectations from the society. As a black person, you meet prejudice and low academic expectations. This will negatively affect your academic performance.

Sorry but this is untrue, I've seen some that have not...and we've all seen white kids that haven't succeed. Fact is, Black People are the Canary In the Cave for America, what goes wrong with black people eventually goes wrong with the rest of America. And now you see tons of disenfranchised white males from either single parent, broken homes, or dysfunctional families who are nothing more than wastes of space slackers...who do you think is MMA/Bodybuilding's base...these folk.

Don't generalized like that...the generational aspect is what really is the issue, whether it be white, or black, The Baby Boomer generation has failed their kids. Whether it be black women with picking the wrong men, and thinking that they can raise a kid by themselves, or white parents who play "friends" with their kids and let them talk to them however they want.

The Ganster thing, it wasn't until the late 60's when blacks were in the projects, did black men become "menacing", before it the stereotype was that black men were "yellow" and cowardly, which is why James Jeffries wouldn't fight Jack Johnson---black men can't fight were not worthy opponents (which why they only fought black men basement events, right ::))

By the 70's when amny blacks had moved from the South to the projects, and  lack of education, jobs, etc, crime flourished, combined that with the Southern attitude of trying to educate one's self is being white, you have the recipe for the "Thug Negro"....and the rest is history...in order to sell "being real" black men have only the option of being thugs...this is the business model. Unfortunately, black people need to learn how to define themselves and not let others define them...are you a Thug or are you a Man? Are you a Whore or are you a Woman?

Props man, so should there be more Bill Cosby's then??
yes, and he is viewed as a Pariah, and I agree with him, but he is also somewhat out of touch...the main problem is that their is a Generation MisCommunication...you don't criticize Gen. X and Y, because we already have low self esteem, you show us how to do it the right way. You talk to us, not scold us...nobody listens to being scolded. And that is what it seems like Bill Cosby does.

Alonso said.

yes, and he is viewed as a Pariah, and I agree with him, but he is also somewhat out of touch...the main problem is that their is a Generation MisCommunication...you don't criticize Gen. X and Y, because we already have low self esteem, you show us how to do it the right way. You talk to us, not scold us...nobody listens to being scolded. And that is what it seems like Bill Cosby does.

You serious?
No wonder there is an education "gap."  That's the biggest crock of self-entitled absurdity I've ever heard....seriously, is it always someone else's fault?

Let me get this straight, an entire culture is based around mocking any peer that "tries" to succeed and then blaming their own lack of success on "the man."
Then, after one of those "uncle Toms" that actually did succeed grows tired enough of his self-defeating culture to speak out against it.....and the "culture's" response is to say it is his fault that people won't listen.....because he wasn't nice enough?

Public schools, churches, and mainstream media are all complicit in the collective dumbing down of America.

A public that lacks logic, common sense, and reasoning skills will always be subject to the whims of those in power, whom they will willingly place there, often on basis of uninformed emotion.

Reality.

Yeah, they do.  Anyone, regardless of race, knows it.....now whether they will admit it or not is another thing.  If they do admit it, they run the risk of being put into the sell-out/uncle tom category.....so it's more "street" to just blame others for your own failures, rather than take some responsibility.....and believe me you see it in the low-income whites here too.

Question for mal, Tre and Wiggs.......here in Raleigh there is a big uproar because the school council wants to get rid of a busing program that is supposed to create racial diversity....the main reason is to save money, as many buses from different schools are covering the same areas.....  the opponents of ending the busing think it's a "racist" move......what do you guys think and what were the schools like that you attended in jr hs and hs?

Funding and community involvement were the issues in my JR high schools. High school was just Awful. As far as Jr high. I went to 2. Horase Mann Middle school which was inner city, We didnt have books for every kid. We had 1 book for every 2 kids in 6th and 7th grade. Hopefully you lived close to your bookmate because if not it was tough to get homework done.

My other school was Marina Del Rey Middle which is on the westside.. near the beach. We had 2 books for every 1 student. One for school and one for home. Young Lawyers Program, young engineers program (both run by volunteers in the community) Shit.. Rosie Grier was my football coach..Both schools are Los angeles unified school district. But its a big difference in funding and involvment.
High school...lmao.. i went to the high school that Tooki Williams Started the crips at. Washington high in los angeles. First day at school there was a damn shooting. 1000 freshmen came in, 400 Graduated...

That's funny! I found plenty of black students in my classes. And my degree is in engineering. Then again, like Big Mal, I'm an HBCU grad.

I think  this is the part that everyone is missing, white and black both went into modern lifestyle around 30-40 years ago. Which ment kids went on autopilot. They had to teach themselves etc, wasn't an issue with whites because they were already culturally ingrained in academic, bussiness lifestyle.

The expectation that black kids without a sphere of influnece means there trapped and will stay down forrever.

My parents never force school down my throat, it was just the world I live in that I had to goto school. That's the difference white culture has been able to coast because it already got it.

that is so crazy within the same city....here instead of just busing kids to "better schools" they need to improve the ones with bad performance and funding.  I would love to ask them what message it's sending to the kids left at the shitty schools to brag about sending a fairly small percentage to the better schools?

and that grad rate is staggering and telling....I know a hs diploma is just a kinda joke to all of us with higher education, but damn can you imagine how much that limits your employment opportunities?  When people ask me about school, I assume they mean college right off the bat.

Chaos had it right in his earlier post- it's your own culture's fault. If an emphasis would be put on work ethic and raising your kids the correct way then they would probably turn out to be great citizens. It happens in all cultures, not just black culture. I see and have worked with some hard working black ppl but I don't see as many as I should. Your kids don't want to grow up and be doctors and engineers they want to be rappers, gang bangers, and sports stars. Education is key to raising the status of a culture, just look at the Asian culture for example.

When there is a PTA meeting at University High (the high school in brentwood down the street from my place) man.. the fuckin whole of bev hills somes out to see whats going on with their children. What bills will effect the school. What programs will be offered etc.

At Washington, about 14 parents show up... most are mexican. True story

I wrote Sharpton about this because i feel like its something of substance. Since blacks (i dont know why) seem to listen to this douche, i thought that he could shed light on the primary education of the inner city, but i havent heard from him yet.

Yes I'm quoting what I said, because I believe it.

The culture sucks because culture can't develope in modern society. The idea that black parents are gonna shit down a kids throat is too much. Sure asians do it and there fucked up over obsessive neurotic over acheivers because of it.  White people have been costing,  they havent needed input from parents, to expect blacks with no input from there parents to be on the same level is exposing the ignorance of people on both sides of the issue, and just proves you don't understand how culture works.

Dude i know.. im like bill Cosby on this one.. We got some shit to handle and we cant blame whites for it. Im Puerto rican too.. and most of them hate mexicans... but why, they work harder. Puerto ricans are the at the bottom of the barell when it comes to education and employment of any spanish speaking culture....AND WE HAVE THE EASIEST PATH...we dont have to jump fences like mexicans.

The parental involvement is overstated. My parents were marignally involved in my academics. I was independant never even crossed their mind to instill shit in me.

I learned because it was the world I lived in. The women would talk about being nurse " the plative care unit is moving to the west wing obstetrics are having afit etc" the men would talk about a job they did the size of tax forums etc. Me my brothers and cousins would be fucking around with toy gunpoweder rockets, taken apart rc cars, bill 6 foot towers out of lego's(dad taught us how to make strong structure) etc. I was born to be an engineer not because my parents even know what the fuck it's about but because it was the world I grew up in.

Point is this is the shit black kids don't have access to, a passive enviroment that advocates learning. My parents never forced shit on me nor did any of my cousins do that shit, we all just knew what we wanted to do. This is why you can't expect blacks to behave like whites.

Sure you can tell your black kid to work hard etcetera, but it's harder to force your will on someone and much easier to passively influence.

Wigglet........all I'm gonna say about this is it is the "black culture" fault.......meaning black heros are the gangsters and rappers and drug dealers.........so young black kids want that, don't want to be Cliff Huxtable........that's too hard, being a piece of shit is easy.

Chaos you are correct in your assessment. I would also like to add that it isn't Whitey's fault for the demise of black people's education or success. You have all black schools, all black colleges and so many social programs to make sure they black kids have a shot at success. It is a matter of taking advantage of what is put forward for them.

I for one would love for every kids to be able to go to college and get an education but I want them to do it by their hard work and dedication, not from some hand out program.

I didn't go to college, I served in the U.S. Army for eight years and learned a trade. I am working in that particular field to this day and I can honestly say I love it and make a good living at it.

Life is what you make of it. Seize the opportunities and move forward.

So what you're saying is that most blacks are too stupid to think for themselves and instead the majority of them take their cultural cues from non-blacks.

Seems to me that you're blaming others for your shortcomings.

Just so you understand where I'm coming from, I think most Americans PERIOD are too stupid to think for themselves, black, white, yellow, brown, whatever.

And as I've stated over and over, yes, churches and public schools (aided by the mass media) are complicit in the destruction of free thought.

The difference is whites are still coasting by on a legacy from the GI bill, where going to school was instilled in white culture just as much as ww2 is. This is what people dont get. I'm tired of saying it but these are the profound differences in how whites and blacks act.

It even goes back to my americans are immature, American culture is youth oriented and has little involvement from parents as american's are very much and independant people in the modern era.

i think you have to put a lot of the blame at the feet of popular culture. The role models that the black youth of today look up to have no indications of any education (T.I, lil wayne....etc) like it or not the majority of black youth look to pop culture as their inspiration, and when you inspiration is phones, shoes, and rims...... well education takes a back seat (no pun intended on the whole back seat back of the bus thing).

again your putting all the blame on blacks there in control but the forced comparison to whites is what cause the problem. You expect them to behave like other people when you don't understand why whites are the way they are.
It's not as direct as just yelling at your kids it's alot of passive shit.

I donno somewhat true, but I think there's a underlying truth, that's often missed. Even amongst white people wealth stays in families, and not because of parental focus on academics. I think the amount of passive shit you pic up from parents where there not trying force goals on you is greatly ignored,.  My parents didn't teach or force they exposed, I just passively pick up on shit like credit cards are bad, people that waste money on trying to look a certain way are fucked etc.

Even my uncles taught me shit without being preachy, like uncle B why'd yo goto the mainland. Well boy I fucked up had no education. (he didn't tell me to get one, he made it apparent that I had no choice). Blacks don't have that no choice scenario, or when they do it usually means I gotta be a baller or drug dealer I ain't getting out of here any other way.

You can't expose black kids to shit if you don't got it. My parents got it because they were forced into by their parents back when we still had familiy values(when blacks were legal). This is the difference. We got a head start that blacks can't get access too.

There are different types of parental involvement......for example you were expected to do well academically, have good credit, etc... and that is a great way of parenting.....just go about your business and set a good example for you kids......that doesn't happen often enough in the "ghetto" and "trailer parks" of america

Well its near impossible if your parents don't got it, which kinda is my point. They don't got it you can't get it. Back in the 50 shit was different now shit is beyond what is healthy.

I'd agree but I don't think it's automatically parents, there needs to be a way to channel this shit to young blacks kids, as I said passively.

There is quite a bit of evidence that its expectations that make a huge difference.  There was a story recently where I live where a principal took over a school that was lagging behind.....within 1 yr he had scores significantly up......when asked what it was....he emphasized just a "we are going to do it" attitude among the students AND teachers.....no excuses, no bs....you are expected to do well and you will.....great lesson in that.

It would help, but the problem is they buy into the culture so early in life and its damn near impossible once its so ingrained......too many of the athletes and rappers would prefer to keep the illusion alive....and all it takes is a few to try to make anybody who speaks out against it as not "down in the hood" etc...  but there are some who do, they just don't get the publicity that the assholes do.

As far as the black community is concerned, the problem is that too many black men only end up in church, carried in a casket. The destruction of the nuclear family has shown its most devastating effects within African-American circles. Part of that family is the church.

My mother kept me in church and in religious private school. That kept me out of trouble and showed me the importance of a good education.

I didn't hang in the streets, because I had plenty of other things to do with my church family: bowling, Ice Cream socials, visiting nurisng homes, church softball league, giving out Thanksgiving baskets, etc.

im gonna give you the answer, and it simple

your communities are failing yourselves, young blacks are having babies like buying a new pair of shoes, and then pawning the children off to the grandparent......or on parent raising them alone..............black children are being raised with the wrong role models, they are raised by their peers and rappers to think that trying in school means your a sellout uncle tom

and heres the catch.............no one is saying this..............no one is being honest and saying the truth: BLACK PARENTS ARE FAILING BLACK CHILDREN

instread they blame the teachers..........adn blame the schools.........and demand more money be pumped into the schools

which is bullshit......teachers jobs are to TEACH......not fucking raise dilenquent children.

a childs development consists of an equation betweeen the parents teaching discipline and life skills.........and the teacher teaching academic stuff

black parents are not fufilling their end of the bargain, and the teachers are tryin to teach animals..........and instead of anyone callin gout the parents they call out the teachers...........and demand more money be pumped into the schools

if parents are doing their job..........children should have the discipline to learn in a fucking one room school house............a desk, a black board, and a book........THATS IT

my grandparents all went ot school in one room schoolhouses, and they learned..........because they were disciplined to sit and learn

its so much easier to keep blaming teachers and keep blaming not enough money being pumped into the schools..........cause peopel are afraid to acknowledge the root............which is bad parenting

again, if children are correctly raised by their parents...........they could learn under ANY circumstances........... ..

but these crooked black politicians are gonan keep demanding more money for inner city schools, and it will continue to go to waster.........cause that is not the problem

i'm a nyc teacher and you're absolutely right.  The talking heads from the networks make a big deal about this documentary, 'waiting for superman.'  It's all bullshit because at the end of the day, you gotta stop making excuses and look at yourself.  Kids are a representation of their parents.

thats the whole thing........there are such unrealistic expectations placed on teacher........you simply CANNOT teach an animal

they want the fucking teacher to be magicians, goinng outt of their way.......staying after school........busting their ass.......MOST TEACHER GET PAID fucking 40 some thousand a year, people are lucky they are trying at all

you see it shouldnt matter how hard teachers try, or how boring they are.,........if they sit up there are read like ben stein from the wonder years out of a book......it shouldnt fucking matter, children should have the discipline instilled by their parents to sit there, and learn

my grandparents all went to one room school houses, where there was a book, a desk, a black board, and a shitty teacher............but they sat and learned abnd became very succesful in life

like 'toxic avenger' said every engineering and math department in the colleges BEST UNIVERSITIES are filled with indians, and east asians, and pakastanis.........who learned in fuckin DIRT TENTS, sitting on logs in the middle of a dirt village...........and they are wipign the floor with us, because they try their asses off, their parents discipline them, and convey the importance of gettin gout of poverty..............

its a fucking lie, all the politicians blaming the teacher, the "we neeed  another bizillion funneled into baltimore schools.,,,,,,,,,IT WILL DO NOTHING........because its a problem with their community and parents, and what goes on when they are not in school

we have got SO lazy in america, if you look at a civil war documentary......you see soldiers (poor, the LOWEST class) writin letters back to home that sound like the fucking kings english.......and they learn in far-less-then-ideal circumstancs............ .but out lower class tosay cannot read or write, cause their communities have gone so far off the deep end

There are lies and then there are statistics. Black Americans make up 12% of the total U.S. population with White Americans making up the vast majority. Using a population sample from each you're gonna have a skewed result that whites out perform blacks. Of course.. you have more white kids to draw from to justify your position.

Nonsense.....

You should compare those stats to how many blacks aged 18-55 are in lockup compared to whites..., but of course in the end it's always the white man giving it to the minorities.. all those black fellas in jail really didn't commit any crimes, we just wanted to be asshole racists and lock them up for the hell of it right ?

Is that right ?.. why don't you present some proof or evidence of this, next you're gonna tell me that a white man started the crack epidemic in the 1980's...

Ricky Donnell Ross (born April 30, 1960[1]), also known as "Freeway" Ricky Ross , is a convicted drug trafficker best known for the "drug empire" that he presided over in Los Angeles, in the early 1980s.[2] The nickname "Freeway" came from Ross's ownership of several properties along the Harbor Freeway. His old house he grew up in is where a freeway now stands.[3] During the height of his drug dealing, Ross claims to have made "$2 millions in one day."

thats the whole thing........there are such unrealistic expectations placed on teacher........you simply CANNOT teach an animal

they want the fucking teacher to be magicians, goinng outt of their way.......staying after school........busting their ass.......MOST TEACHER GET PAID fucking 40 some thousand a year, people are lucky they are trying at all

you see it shouldnt matter how hard teachers try, or how boring they are.,........if they sit up there are read like ben stein from the wonder years out of a book......it shouldnt fucking matter, children should have the discipline instilled by their parents to sit there, and learn

my grandparents all went to one room school houses, where there was a book, a desk, a black board, and a shitty teacher............but they sat and learned abnd became very succesful in life

like 'toxic avenger' said every engineering and math department in the colleges BEST UNIVERSITIES are filled with indians, and east asians, and pakastanis.........who learned in fuckin DIRT TENTS, sitting on logs in the middle of a dirt village...........and they are wipign the floor with us, because they try their asses off, their parents discipline them, and convey the importance of gettin gout of poverty..............

its a fucking lie, all the politicians blaming the teacher, the "we neeed  another bizillion funneled into baltimore schools.,,,,,,,,,IT WILL DO NOTHING........because its a problem with their community and parents, and what goes on when they are not in school

we have got SO lazy in america, if you look at a civil war documentary......you see soldiers (poor, the LOWEST class) writin letters back to home that sound like the fucking kings english.......and they learn in far-less-then-ideal circumstancs............ .but out lower class tosay cannot read or write, cause their communities have gone so far off the deep end

OMG this is so true, I look back now on growing up and kids I knew (I grew up in East Europe) where all the kids busted their asses off, did all sorts of extra curricular functions, after school programs, advanced learning courses, foreign language studies (thus my superior command of the English language) and math/arithmetic building skills plus other skillsets, what do the kids do here? watch tv, play video games and eat themselves into obesity, how many young kids join scouts anymore or learn survival training, etc. ?!?! this world is getting fucked, these loser kids these days have no ambitions or dreams, I blame the mtv reject generation for this.

Correct me if I'm wrong Wiggs, but since 12.4% of the population in the US are black, why is it so bad that only 5% are black males in college?

Maybe I am way off but if 12.4% of the population are black, meaning 6.2% are black males then why is 5% such a bad number?
I think your leaving out there's about 20 percent non blacks that are either too old, or aren't legal americans, that creates the difference. But just a guess. not sure.

Wouldn't it be better if you just didn't say anything?  ::)
Whatever dude I think I got a point. there 12.6 percent but that's if you include immigrants that were educated elsewhere, or ones that are not educated at all. Or older white folk who make up a larger portion of old folk.

What I mean is black youth are about 20 percent of the young population due to different birth rates, and immigration, so they should have about 10 percent black males in uni. Don't tune me out I'm mildly stable at the moment :D.

Working class and poor people in the US are getting stomped down more and more by the system.

Not just blacks, but all poor people are getting fucked over there.

This makes sense, but still, one would have to check demographics and see how many kids in "college age" there are in the US and then the percentage of black people in "college age" vs percentage of black college students (5%) to make a real assessment of the situation.
one would I'll keep you posted when I find data that can be trusted so far I got 42 percent of black goto uni versus 63 national average which would make a rate of 6 right if there 17 percent of pop;

That 42% would drop to about 12% if you didn't count sport scholarships and so on..lol

remember, every decent uni needs a good football and basketball team.

The situation for black kids might be bleak, but don't fall into any false sense of security that white kids in the US are doing much better:

people can say its the teachers, ect. but you also have to have parents that care about your education. the PARENTS need to push the kid to do well in school
