Washington (CNN) -- The Navy has opened an investigation into how a series of raunchy videos, full of sexual innuendo and anti-gay remarks, were produced and shown to the crew of the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise while on deployment supporting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Navy spokesman Cmdr. Chris Sims said the videos, which were shown to the crew in 2006 and 2007, are "inappropriate."
Excerpts from the videos and descriptions of their content were first published Saturday by The Virginian-Pilot newspaper in Norfolk, Virginia.
The videos on the paper's website, reviewed by CNN, feature a man identified by two Navy officials and The Virginian-Pilot as Capt. Owen Honors, who at the time was the executive officer, or second-in-command, of the Enterprise. He recently took command of the carrier, winning one of the most coveted assignments in the U.S. Navy, which has only 11 aircraft carriers.
Honors is shown cursing along with other members of his staff in an attempt to demonstrate humor, according to videos. There are also anti-gay slurs, simulated sex acts, and what appear to be two female sailors in a shower together.
The investigation was ordered Friday by Adm. John Harvey, the four-star head of the Navy's Fleet Forces Command, after the videos were detailed in The Virginian-Pilot. The paper also posted a link to some of the material, but edited it so that expletives were censored and some identities of junior Navy crew were disguised.
The Navy issued a statement Saturday, saying in part "production of videos, like the ones produced four to five years ago on USS Enterprise and now being written about in the Virginian-Pilot, were not acceptable then and are still not acceptable in today's Navy. The Navy does not endorse or condone these kinds of actions."
The statement also said, "U.S. Fleet Forces Command has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the production of these videos; however, it would be inappropriate to comment any further on the specifics of the investigation."
But the Saturday statement was an about-face from the initial military statement to the newspaper. In that statement, the Navy said the videos were "not created with the intent to offend anyone. The videos were intended to be humorous skits focusing the crew's attention on specific issues such as port visits, traffic safety, water conservation, ship cleanliness, etc."

I think of the bravery shown by Bush1 and JFK during wartime.... then I look at a captain of a boat making fart jokes and grabbing wangs of crew members, and it's just sad to see the decline in this particular case.
Since I know that vast majority of the brave people serving our country don't participate in gay porn movies while at work, I have to agree with you that this is probably an isolated incident which shouldn't be allowed to happen again.

Boy, these goofs at CNN can't get their story straight. The full video (or at least the one posted on YouTube) begins with "XO Movie Night". In other words, this was shown on Saturday nights for entertainment purposes, while the crew was watching movies. This was NOT for any military training purposes.
NOBODY was mandated to watch this. And the then-executive officer of the Enterprise warns in advance that the video may offend some people.

In case you missed it, Capt. Honors is, for the most part, an equal-opportunity offender. And, of course, the screwballs who aired this MISSED the rest of the footage, where he's spending time with the crew, folks are dancing, clowning around, and basically having fun.
Plus, per the crew's own words on Facebook, they looked forward to XO Movie Night, as it was one of the biggest morale booster of the crew's deployments.

Very true. SO glad I was in during a different era. I thought it was actually pretty funny.
A few other funny things from bootcamp. I was there thru Thanksgiving and a lot of guys families sent them baked goods, candy, etc... One day the CC's praised us for doing a good job and let us eat ALL of the candy sent to everybody. Then they pulled an inspection and took those who failed it into a little private room off from the barracks......3 of them at least threw-up from what they called "self-destruction." Afterwards, ALL of us, including the guys who threw-up just laughed our asses off at how they got us.

What I went through in boot camp was so much worse than this. I remember getting PT'd to death fr screwing up few times in full rain gear in the summer in the barracks to the point they had to call an EMT just to make sure I did not pass out.
We marchd, marched, and marched, regardless of blisters and pain, etc.
Yet the fags on the left get upset over some off-color jokes. Go figure. ::) ::)

Not necessarily. Almost every comment from sailors on that ship has been in support of the guy and talked about the morale boost it was. Now I'm not capable of putting a dollar sign on morale and I doubt anyone on here is, either, so whether it was a waste of money or not is debatable.

I heard on the radio that many of his sailors loved this guy and think he is getting a raw deal.
If the guy ran the ship aground or smashed it into a port, I can understand why he would be relieved, but I'm still ok with him.

His tactical knowledge enabled victory after victory. It was his leadership that gained the performance of those troops whilst other leaders did not evoke the same results.

Washington (CNN) -- Navy Capt. Owen Honors, who produced profanity- and slur-laden videos while second in command of the USS Enterprise, has been relieved of his command of the ship, a senior defense official told CNN Tuesday.
Excerpts from the videos and descriptions of their content were first published Saturday by The Virginian-Pilot newspaper in Norfolk, Virginia.
The videos on the paper's website, reviewed by CNN, feature a man identified by two Navy officials and The Virginian-Pilot as Honors, who at the time was the executive officer, or second in command, of the aircraft carrier. He recently took command of the carrier, winning one of the most coveted assignments in the U.S. Navy, which has only 11 aircraft carriers.
Navy spokesman Cmdr. Chris Sims said the videos, which were shown to the crew of the Enterprise while on deployment supporting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2006 and 2007, are "inappropriate."
Honors is shown cursing along with other members of his staff in an attempt to demonstrate humor, according to the videos.

The investigation was ordered Friday by Adm. John Harvey, the four-star head of the Navy's Fleet Forces Command, after the videos were detailed in The Virginian-Pilot. The paper also posted a link to some of the material, but edited it so that expletives were censored and some identities of junior Navy crew were disguised.
CNN left a message for Honors on Saturday. The Virginian-Pilot said he did not respond to requests for comment.
The Navy issued a statement Saturday, saying, in part, "production of videos, like the ones produced four to five years ago on USS Enterprise and now being written about in the Virginian-Pilot, were not acceptable then and are still not acceptable in today's Navy. The Navy does not endorse or condone these kinds of actions."
The statement also said, "U.S. Fleet Forces Command has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the production of these videos; however, it would be inappropriate to comment any further on the specifics of the investigation."
But the Saturday statement was an about-face from the initial military statement to the newspaper. In that statement, the Navy said the videos were "not created with the intent to offend anyone. The videos were intended to be humorous skits focusing the crew's attention on specific issues such as port visits, traffic safety, water conservation, ship cleanliness, etc."
Sims said senior officers had not yet seen the videos when they issued the first statement. It was after viewing them that the investigation was ordered, he said.
When the videos first came to light the "leadership" of the Enterprise was "directed" to make certain future videos were appropriate, the Navy said.
Sims said he was not aware if Honors was ever reprimanded. In the videos, Honors repeatedly jokes that his superior officers were unaware of the content of the videos and "they should absolutely not be held accountable."
The Virginian-Pilot says the videos were shown over the ship's internal broadcast system to its nearly 6,000 crew.

Emanuel also promised to "examine" Congressional legislation that would remove the word from federal law.
"We are thankful to Mr. Emanuel for meeting with us today and hearing our concerns," said the joint statement from the six advocates whom he met, led by Shriver.
"Our community has earned the right to be respected instead of ridiculed. We have suffered injustice for generations and we are demanding that it end," the said in the statement. "This is another small step on the road to a country that accepts the gifts of all."
UPDATE: Seckler says that, today, the leaders did accept Emanuel's apology: "All six of the advocates, including Tim Shriver, accepted Rahm Emanuel’s apology on their own behalf and on behalf of the organizations they represent."

NORFOLK, Va. - The former commander of a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier who produced raunchy videos aboard the USS Enterprise can remain in the Navy despite a finding that he committed misconduct, a Navy panel ruled Wednesday.
Capt. Owen P. Honors let out a sigh of relief after the board of inquiry read its decision, then embraced his wife after months of uncertainty about his career largely came to a close. The board was deciding whether to recommend to Navy Secretary Ray Mabus that Honors should be kicked out of the Navy after nearly three decades of service because of the videos. Among other things, the videos included simulated same-sex shower scenes, anti-gay slurs and references to prostitution in foreign ports.
Honors also faced the possibility of losing hundreds of thousands of dollars in retirement benefits if he had been forced out under a different pay grade.
"O.P. is pleased," Honors' attorney, Charles Gittins, told reporters following the hearing. "Retention is a big deal. He has the advantage now of leaving now on his terms."
Honors was removed as the carrier's top officer in January days before a scheduled deployment after several of the videos were leaked to media outlets. He was reassigned to administrative duties because of the videos and Honors believes an officer he had recently disciplined on the ship was responsible for the leak, which he considers an act of revenge.
It was not immediately clear what jobs Honors' may hold in the future, but it is unlikely he would return to the Enterprise. A new commanding officer took control of the ship last week, replacing the commanding officer who was called in for a six month deployment following Honors' dismissal.
Honors said the videos were made to improve morale while teaching important shipboard lessons, such as water conservation. He helped produce and appeared in the videos that aired on the ship's closed circuit television network between October 2005 and December 2007, when he was the ship's executive officer.
Maintaining morale is part of the executive officer's job and by all accounts the videos were wildly popular with the crew. They were shown to thousands of sailors each Saturday night before a feature length film Honors' had chosen and many sailors proudly agreed to appear in them. One of the women in a same-sex shower scene -- who at the end of the video was shown to be clothed -- said she had even shown the video to her parents.
Honors is one of a number of commanding officers fired from the job by the Navy this year, but his case has drawn by far the most attention. Clips of the videos have appeared on national television, providing a significant source of embarrassment for Navy leaders.
Gittins said convening the board hearing was politically motivated.
"The only reason we are sitting in this room is because the press made a big deal about it," Gittins told the three rear admirals who comprise the board during closing arguments.
In its unanimous decision, the panel agreed that Honors committed conduct unbecoming a naval officer, failure to demonstrate acceptable qualities of leadership and substandard performance.
The board did not elaborate on why it found Honors had committed those offenses but should remain in the Navy. The government had been asking that Honors be honorably discharged.
Cmdr. Michael Luken, who was effectively acting as a type of prosecutor, said during closing arguments that Honors clearly committed conduct unbecoming of a naval officer when he mocked the ship's combat systems officer in front of thousands of sailors viewing the videos aboard the ship. In one video, a toy parrot says he couldn't drink enough alcohol to go get a massage with that officer.
"It is unrefutable that this was inappropriate material for an executive officer to put across the ship," Luken said.
The Navy declined to make Luken available for comment.
Although Honor's career won't come to an abrupt halt for disciplinary reasons, it is still possible he won't remain in the service much longer. Honors is among those the Navy is considering for early retirement as it thins out its ranks to cut costs.
The selective early retirement board reviews certain sailors' service records to determine who should leave the Navy, and a censure letter from Mabus that is already in Honors file because of the videos is likely to work against him. During testimony on Tuesday, Honors said he felt like he had a target on him because of the video incident.
By law, officers selected for early retirement by the board must retire no later than the first day of the seventh month following Mabus' approval of its recommendations. The target date for that approval is Sept. 1.
