Title: What's the most useless piece of equipment in your gym?
Post by: MB on January 18, 2011, 07:26:22 AM
We have a seated BB press station that is worthless.  When you sit with your back against the pad and unrack the weight, the BB doesn't clear the pins.  Why do gym owners buy such poorly designed equipment?

squat rack.  i do my barbell curls there, but the rack's not required.

This shitty lats pulldown from Sportsart
(http://www.ifitnessdirect.com/images/products/790_l_3.jpg)
- It's pulley is way too long for a full range of motion, even when I adjust the seat to it's lowest position.
- I miss the "iron grip" since the bar has a plastic shell.
- The knee pads are "home equipment quality"
- Since it has a band instead of a cable the movement goes far from flexible

Too bad my gym owner is also the importer of this Chinese crap  :-\

Lol my new gym costs me five bucks a month(community gym). Still couldn't figure out why it was so cheap after about a week it became very clear.

The treadmills have shitty electrical so they ground out or some shit after about 5-7 mins of use, they have one row machine, however all the pads that should keep it from sliding are missing, so your going all over the place as you move. And all the cable machines look like they were the old shit they used in pumping iron(old in 1975 :o)        All I can say is if this place don't make me big atleast I can say I'm truly spartan.

Why dont they make the squat racks a little lower >:(? Anyone 5'8" and shorter wont be able to go ATG, annoying as fuck.
Have a pair of these.

My gym has 2 flat, 2 incline & 2 decline benches and almost no one is using them. Back in the day when I started training those benches were like magnets to many gymrats.

LOL, spot on but I don't complain with my 230lb with decent bf%

Only my previous gym had one HS chest press (HS isn't a mainstream brand in Europe) which felt way better than other chest machines. I include some machines to get a good squeeze at the end of my training, so don't call me a pumper or beachboy LOL

I guess it depends on what squat rack you have, the ones in my gym, if I go atg the bar touches the rack. Sucks.. I guess I can start doing a little below parallel..
But on a serious note, this is what you need, a power rack, perfect for free motion squats, deads, presses, shrugs, etc. Only my first gym had one  :-\

Yeah a power rack would be awesome, sucks I haven't seen one in any of the gyms I've trained at here in Norway, I usually just squat outside the rack to go atg
the only time i squat inside of a power rack is when i do front squats......i also use it when i do really heavy bench with no spotter...

My previous place was like that; a good old weightlifting club. Yet the owner of the place even complained when I left too many plates on the leg press and went nuts when I put a Disturbed CD in the player, LOL.
Main reason that I left the club was because of the crappy dumbbells plus that most of them were less than 65lb.

We've just had a new piece of equipment installed in Temple Gym - it's a Hammer shoulder press machine but it's angled at a weird incline so you're pushing kind of behind you. The handlebars are also at a strange angle which don't agree with your wrists - you need a spotter to get the damn thing started no matter how light the plates are loaded on either end. It's bizarre - the manager paid about £1,100 for the piece of shit and nobody uses it. We've been begging for new dumbells for years as people keep chucking them on the floor and breaking them.

Talking about expensive stuff -almost- no one is using... we have this hacksquat / deadlift machine. As you can notice it has no shoulder pads so you need a Kazmaier-grip if you want to perform some serious hacksquats. Second disadvantage is that you start in a bent position. The platform could be a painful one if you walk against it  :-X
I'm about the only one in the gym who use it, great for shrugs.

A fully automated "personal trainer" and multipurpose gym station, all in one.  I guess you're just supposed to sit down, press a button, and do your entire workout.  I've never seen a single person use them.  I don't think they even turn on anymore, actually.

i only use the lat pull down as a assitance movement...so its not that big of a deal...

i only use the leg press sometimes on rep day when i feel the weight on my knees, and not the muscle...

bench

WHAT CAUSES THIS?!?  This has been happening to me BIG TIME the last couple of weeks.  Seriously pissing me off.  I think maybe it's cause I fried my quads, since it started happening after I had a really good, draining leg day.

pec deck supersetted with dips is a great finisher for chest...a HUGE pump...

i used to think the stretch station at my old gym was useless, until I started using it for various angles...

You could just superset db flyes with dips though. I don't know about the pec-deck, maybe its just the one in the gym I go to that sucks...it hurts my shoulder joint and I don't feel it in the chest.

I don't know why people are slating pec-deck - the ones I've used in various gyms over the years have been alright. Obviously they're more of an isolation exercise but I've found room in my chest workouts to use them at the end for a good overall pump.

Problem with pec decs is not all of them are smooth and alot of them are hard on the shoulder joints.

fixed... them shits delayed my RC recovery by a year i think.. and they actually weakened the orgin of my pectoralis minor.. For me.. i go with bench flys with a modified movement.. i dont go with fill ROM... i use heavy weight and go half way..

My previous gym had one. When I compare it with my GF, it's advantage is that it gives you a free back massage (read: don't have to do the dishes)

Most people sit too low. I'm pretty tall (6ft) but when I adjust the seat to a high position I get a perfect squeeze in my chest without any pain in the delts.
