Edit:
Radioactive clouds will not just stop but most likely go a couple of times around the world, anybody old enough who can remember Chernobyl can testify to that.
It would have massive massive impact on the economy which just started to recover.
Never mind the plant and animal life around the area.
It could have a huge impact on anybody
This ain't russia behind the iron curtain everybody wants to fail, this is Japan the second largest economy in the world.
BTW they have just released news that more than likely a major incident happened in one of their reactors, one of worker is seriously sick with uncontrolable vomiting which is radioactive poisoning.
More news says that a major meltdown is either happening right now or has already happened.
I tell you something, this will work out the same as in chernobyl were they witheld information until the end, I say regardless of how the wind is etc , do not walk in rain in the next couple of days.

So, we're all gonna die?!?!?! :o :o :o

We are all safe.
"No Chernobyl is possible at a light water reactor. Loss of coolant means a temperature rise, but it also will stop the reaction," Naoto Sekimura, a professor at the University of Tokyo, said.
"Even in the worst-case scenario, that would mean some radioactive leakage and equipment damage, but not an explosion. If venting is done carefully, there will be little leakage. Certainly not beyond the 3 km radius."

Not creating a panic just discussing news as they unfold -
Downplaying these events do no help either - If it would be the UK or America you would have a field day.

Yes, that seemed to be the actual case if i got this right.

As much as I hate to say this at this kind of moment but I must agree with you, Meso_z -bro.
Maybe now some countries should consider nuke strikes to Japan to prevent further catastrophes. You know, preventive nuke strikes; eliminate the japanese "engineers" so they won't cause any further damage.
I suggest Russia to start loading Topol-M's.
I want to note that I have all the sympathy for ordinary Japanese people - they're not responsible for their governments stupid decisions.

Did they shut down the reactors at least?
-
DK you should start a thread.. Ask a man who could perish in a nuclear explosion anytime any question before he's gone
-
Did they shut down the reactors at least?
The reactors shut down automatically in case of an earthquake.
The problem here seems to be that water leaked out of the cooling system, and the core gets too hot.
They fear a meltdown, the explosion that happened was when they let off steam to lower the pressure on the core, the H2O split up and exploded.
For now the core seems to be stable and the radiation is lowered, but i don't know if that can hold.
-
Thanks for your concerns, i plan to live a little longer.

I can understand your fear, fact is however that these reactors are completly different to the once in Chernobyl, there is a much lesser chance that
even if a meltdown happens which maybe already did that it will do the damage similar to chernobyl, I really doubt that but what the fuck do I know.
If you can I would seriously consider visiting the parents in Germany.

Any news DK? hows the situation over there?
-
More and more governments around the world don't believe that a meltdown hasn't happened already.
They meassured 1.015 Mikrosievert which is double the amount before a radioactive emergency has to be declared.
The Japanese government tries to calm the situation down but according to independent news agencies 10.000 people are
simply fleeing the area if they can.
In a short time we will know the overall catastrophy but I would not be suprised if a radioactive cloud is already on its way to
america.
According to an german specialist he says - everyting points to a complete and total meltdown even the timing of the different events
are correct.
He also says that the actual mass of the meltdown will take about a week to go through the protective layer which it is lying in, if it reaches
water it will trigger another explosion, at some stage it will just cool down.
However they have no idea what to use to further increase the actual cooling process - They said they never went as far as to test that
since it is the worse case scenario and nobody believed this could ever happen.

Are you trying to say that the Japanese are trying to "Toyota" us?
I am trying to say: It would be a good idea to assume the worse has happened, I say it would be a good idea not to believe the news and the governments
around the world but simply follow the weather reports and simply assume that everything they say has not happened has already happened.
I say its time for DK to book a flight.

You see the problem with that is, that even a shut down reactor is not enough, there are many parts of the actual
process of the nuclera powerplant that will still need constant cooling down for at least a day or so.
That has not happend with at least one reactor.

people are often happier when they dont know.
That's the problem with science and progress. They dont really make us happier in the end. Quite the opposite.
Tv doesnt help either. Internet, the medias, all these informations, make people smarter sooner than ever. It accelerates their understanding of life and how people interact with each others. You have 14 y/o kids who are as mature as 30 y/o nowadays. It means they get bored, tired of life sooner. You do the maths. They get older, faster than ever.

seriously "tito", we know you have mental problems, but can you spare us? trying to shock other people to feel better about your own level of madness is an evil intention.
This is sadism; hurting other people to feel good, sharing your own suffering.
-
if you dont like what i post just dont look at it
-
people are often happier when they dont know.
That's the problem with science and progress. They dont really make us happier in the end. Quite the opposite.
In the first place, they say that suffering leads man to perfection; and in the second, if mankind really learns to alleviate its sufferings with pills and drops, it will completely abandon religion and philosophy, in which it has hitherto found not merely protection from all sorts of trouble, but even happiness.

very true.
-
hapiness doesnt exist.
That's the problem with science and progress. They dont really make us happier in the end. Quite the opposite. ???
-
hapiness doesnt exist. It's a concept built by our brain, by evolution, natural selection. The search for it keeps a lot of people going on, reproducing.
I have never seen someone "happy". And if he was, it was only for a brief moment. Constant "hapiness" doesnt exist.
We re wired to do things that biologically, chemically make us feel good, and they ve always been the same (fuck, eat, drink, piss, shit, attack, defend, cooperate, reproduce). Some things you might do hurt other people even if they make you feel better. So they are to be avoided.
This is a synthesis of what every religion, philosophy developped by Man have always been saying, and it has been confirmed by science and the reverse engeenering of the functionning of both mind and body.
So wrong on many points....
-
science and progress teaches us that hapiness is a high level of serotonin, dopamine and others chemicals in the brain.
So youre saying that methheads with a consistent level of drugs in their brain are happier than everyone else? (Due to meth causing high levels of Dopamine and Serotonin to be released) ???
-

they are happy when they re on, unhappy when they re off.
Psychology atlerates biology, biology alterates psychology.
-
Comparing yourself to people who suffer makes you happier.
It makes me sad .

I can tell you for a fact, science has that one wrong.
Whatever it is that alters it, I dont know, but when I was using, towards the end, I wasnt happy even when I was on.
I know what science says, that it is simply an equation of Dopamine and Serotonin, but I dont believe that based on my own experiences.
Now, since Ive been sober, Ive been much happier than I ever was when I was high. So I dont know how to explain that one.

that's because psychology (positive thoughts, lessons, support/caring from some else) is acting on the biologic (your brain). Positive thoughts produce "positive" chemicals.

Ah.
A lot of it was guilt, I had a very good family/support structure and I always felt like I was failing them/myself when I was using.
Now that im sober, got married, everything is in order, Im the happiest I have ever been. <--- I.E. going to survive, reproduce, etc I guess. Lulz.

What third world shithole is going to offer us aid and send personnel over to help ???
we'll just relocate.

Obviously Iraq, Afganistan and Iran.

What third world shithole is going to offer us aid and send personnel over to help ???
Stop being bitter. Japan owns the most US debt next to China. They have done more then their part.

How am I being bitter? So we owe them a few bucks, that gives them the right to nuke us ???

Mexican drug lords may help out.

How am I being bitter? So we owe them a few bucks, that gives them the right to nuke us ???
You babies are acting like japan is ten miles away... They blew up nukes in Nevada remember?
-

Are you another one of these Pearl Harbor revenge jokers? We already nuked them... twice. The fact of the matter is they are another westernized country that needs our help just as we need their help. We are dependent on each other. Consider them a state within the United States but on a global scale and a different country. Yes, the world is in a shitty situation with all the debt and natural disasters going on but we have to do what we can.

Maybe a refresher in English should be in your future.......the topic CLEARLY states "IF"....it's a hypothetical situation, fuckface.

Japan, south korea and israel basically only survived so far because of the USA.. they are advanced outposts inside the "enemy"' (russia, china, midle east, africa) territory...They are very important allies. These military bases are what kept peace on earth for the last decades...
so many ignorants cocksuckers on here seriously... Have no idea what's going on outside of their basement.Sad.

nobody really could help significantly, maybe europe.. UK and australia would send all they have for sure tho.
Fact is there is nothing ABOVE the USA on earth. People shiting on them constantly should think twice about that fact.

Will Brazil send food and clean water to the US ???
what kind of question is that? a third world shit hole, by definiton, is incapable of offering us aid.
Time for them to pay us back don't you think? How many countries has the US sent aid to in the last.........oh, 5 years?
-
The USA didnt just send help to every shitty place on earth for the last century... they SHAPED the world as it is...
-
OK........so answer the question then instead of acting like a ####.
Wait, you just can't help that, can you? ;)
It just means we dig ourselves deeper in to debt. Where do you think the money will come from? Your own back pocket. Aid will come from somewhere eventually. People have to realize now that the globe is becoming smaller and smaller. Due to improved communication, trade, cross cutting international organizations, etc... international events are affecting us more and more. Welcome to democracy and globalization.

Yes, via UN at least.
Also, Brazil lends money to the IMF and the World Bank, and they use the funds to help contries after natural disasters such as those, specially in poor countries.

Wow...........
Q: How many countries receive foreign aid from the United States and how much does each receive?
- T. Nolan, Milton, Mass.
A: According to the Congressional Research Office, in fiscal year 2004 the United States donated some sort of financial aid to about 150 countries. That assistance ranged from food, clothing and shelter for natural disaster victims to guns, tanks and other military aid.
Congress appropriated $39 billion in 2004

Cuba
One of the first countries to offer aid, Cuba offered to send 1,586 doctors and 26 tons of medicine. This aid was rejected by the State Department.[15] Also, before the 2006 World Baseball Classic, Cuba said they would donate their share of the winnings to Katrina victims to ensure the United States embargo against Cuba was not violated. However, after the tournament, the U.S. government refused to allow the donation

funny how the medias dont even talk about iraq anymore since all the assholes there have been killed and the country is now rebuilding itself under the control of american influence.
I remember when the journalists were saying the quagmire would last for a decade... US soldiers and coalition just happend to hunt down all the extremists to the last one, killed, jailed em and poured tons of money there .
Afghanistan is next, maybe iran... North korea... The USA are shaping the world and forcing the spread of democracy thru the injection of TV, internet, dollars coca cola and porn.

what's ur point? 39 billion is about 1% of our budget. How much of our GDP do you think is dependent on foreign countries? Even in a trade defect we still take in billions in tax revenue based off international business transactions. Besides the fact that long term foreign aid payments will pay off exponentilly once undeveloped countries industrialize and start participating in the global economy. Besides the fact that it's the right thing to do.

Asking who's going to help usa when shit hits the fan is kind like asking who's going to help the whole of europe when things turn sour.
USA/America is a one big ass nation and I doubt any sort of catastrophe is going to incapacitate all of it at once.
So the answer to your question would be that america helps itself(but the whole Katrina thing was certainly an embarrassment). Think of it as one european country helping another, the same thing with whatever states might be involved.
-

Iraq will last for at least a decade. If you haven't noticed, we only got couple more years to reach that mark. The Sunni Shiites and Kurds don't want to get along. Al Qaeda is doing everything in their power to cause distrust among the different sects and since the iraqwar started their numbers have at least tripled.
People are starting to wake up but there is still a lot of extremists out there determined to take power and force their ideology on everyone.
The jihadists won't quit till they're dead

What's your point? We are sending aid to people who can't send aid to us? So because they can't return the favor we shouldn't be helping them?
If we did suffer a catastrophe we couldn't handle on our own we would receive aid from great Britain, Germany, France, Russia, etc. Because those are the countries capable of helping us. Asking what third world shit hole would help us is like asking what fish can fly.

I can give a shit about when who immigrated on what day. Europe aint all that. That's why they immigrate like the fuck to get to North America.

what's ur point? 39 billion is about 1% of our budget. How much of our GDP do you think is dependent on foreign countries? Even in a trade defect we still take in billions in tax revenue based off international business transactions. Besides the fact that long term foreign aid payments will pay off exponentilly once undeveloped countries industrialize and start participating in the global economy. Besides the fact that it's the right thing to do.

Amazing. Whats crazy is the people on the west coast have no idea of the possibility of the radiation getting picked up by the jetstream. Just talked to a friend, and he told me "Im not worried, the news hasnt said anything about it until they do im not gonna worry about it."
Hes on the tip of washington. He doesnt get that theyll be the 1st ones to get it, and that the government probably wont say anything until someone gets sick. Epic fail.

I want to note that I have all the sympathy for ordinary American people - they're not responsible for their governments stupid decisions.

Japanese people are ultra annoying. Look at the laughable graphics they use for television. Their video games are absolute shit, their houses look like and are the size of Won-Ton boxes, the streets are incredibly dirty, the population is given to bizarre fetishes of every kind and they have no sense of quality.
considering that you keep posting pictures of your horrible looking unnatural body here on getbig,i wouldnt flap my mouth about strange fetishes or lack of sense of quality
besides,if they annoy you so much,no one forces you to watch their TV,graphics and so on...
you seem to know a lot about ugliness, is it because you see plenty of it every morning in front of your mirror??
one more thing:streets here are NOT dirty...far from that...maybe you confused Japan with the ghetto you live in???

I am pretty sure we here in California are not in legit danger correct? The fallout will probably dissipate/lose energy traveling over land and water masses correct? Winds change? I mean a good friend of mine who is up on these kinds of things told me not to worry. THere isn't anything we can do anything right? I mean, unless I own a house that still has lead paint. What can we, in cali, do IF the worst happens and lethal radiation is heading this way?

They say it's hydrogen gas causing the explosions but where is it coming from? Is it a byproduct of the cooling process or what? Why are they unable to vent it before it ignites? That explosion is fucking humongous... that's a lot of goddamn hydrogen gas that went off.
I know next to nothing about nuclear engineering but seriously, this is making whoever runs that plant look like a complete amateur. I honestly didn't think catastrophes like these in a non soviet nuclear plant could possibly happen with the supposed expertise that runs it.

As I said before, they are pulling a "Toyota"...in whic Toyota tried to hide the "unintended accelleration" issues with their cars (driver error).
Also, I was listening to CSPAN radio about the first nuclear plant, it fame online back in 1971, and it has no dome containment unit---which all new ones have...all the Nucleae Meltdowns happened with Nuclear Plants that didn't have a dome containment...
Basically, the Japanese didn't upgrade the design of the Nuclear Plant...

Yep, cooling water obviously does not fill it's task and cores are about to melt. This can be sum huge shit. Some huge shit.

I don't know jack shit about Nuclear Energy or Plants. The japanese are notorious for covering up scandals due to their culture that severely exaggerates shame associated with fuckups. Like that train that derailed in the middle of Tokyo because the driver went way over the speed limit due to him being late according to the timetable. The driver rather go way too fast and risk a serious accident than deal with the "shame" of being late. It only resulted in a couple of deaths but hey, the driver did what he could ::)

SOMA, Japan – Water levels dropped precipitously Monday inside a Japanese nuclear reactor, twice leaving the uranium fuel rods completely exposed and raising the threat of a meltdown, hours after a hydrogen explosion tore through the building housing a different reactor.
Water levels were restored after the first decrease, but the rods remained partially exposed late Monday night, increasing the risk of the spread of radiation and the potential for an eventual meltdown.
The cascading troubles in the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant compounded the immense challenges faced by the Tokyo government, already struggling to send relief to hundreds of thousands of people along the country's quake- and tsunami-ravaged coast where at least 10,000 people are believed to have died.
Later, a top Japanese official said the fuel rods in all three of the most troubled nuclear reactors appeared to be melting.
Of all these troubles, the drop in water levels at Unit 2 had officials the most worried.
"Units 1 and 3 are at least somewhat stabilized for the time being," said Nuclear and Industrial Agency official Ryohei Shiomi "Unit 2 now requires all our effort and attention."
Workers managed to raise water levels after the second drop Monday night, but they began falling for a third time, according to nuclear agency official Naoki Kumagai. They are now considering spraying water directly on container to cool it.
In some ways, the explosion at Unit 3 was not as dire as it might seem.
The blast actually lessened pressure building inside the troubled reactor, and officials said the all-important containment shell — thick concrete armor around the reactor — had not been damaged. In addition, officials said radiation levels remained within legal limits, though anyone left within 12 miles (20 kilometers) of the scene was ordered to remain indoors.
"We have no evidence of harmful radiation exposure," deputy Cabinet secretary Noriyuki Shikata told reporters.
Fukushima prefectural officials said, however, that 190 people have been exposed to some radiation from the plant. Nuclear safety officials said monitoring devices around the plant briefly showed radiation levels six times the legal limit, but they have since gone down.
On Saturday, a similar hydrogen blast destroyed the housing around the complex's Unit 1 reactor, leaving the shell intact but resulting in the mass evacuation of more than 185,000 people from the area.
Officials were clearly struggling to keep ahead of the crisis and prevent a worst case scenario: a complete reactor meltdown.
In that case, the uranium core melts through the outer containment shell, releasing a wave of radiation and resulting in major, widespread health problems.
Late Monday, the chief government spokesman said there were signs that the fuel rods were melting in all three reactors, all of which had lost their cooling systems in the wake of Friday's massive earthquake and tsunami
"Although we cannot directly check it, it's highly likely happening," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told reporters.
Some experts would consider that a partial meltdown. Others, though, reserve that term for times when nuclear fuel melts through a reactor's innermost chamber but not through the outer containment shell.
Officials held out the possibility that, too, may be happening.
"It's impossible to say whether there has or has not been damage" to the vessels, Kumagai, the nuclear agency official, said.
The Monday morning explosion at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant's Unit 3 injured 11 workers and came as authorities were trying to use sea water to cool the complex's three reactors.
While four Japanese nuclear complexes were damaged in the wake of Friday's twin disasters, the Dai-ichi complex, which sits just off the Pacific coast and was badly hammered by the tsunami, has been the focus of most of the worries over Japan's deepening nuclear crisis. All three of the operational reactors at the complex now have faced severe troubles.
Operators knew the sea water flooding would cause a pressure buildup in the reactor containment vessels — and potentially lead to an explosion — but felt they had no choice if they wanted to avoid complete meltdowns. Eventually, hydrogen in the released steam mixed with oxygen in the atmosphere and set off the two blasts.
Japan's meteorological agency did report one good sign. It said the prevailing wind in the area of the stricken plant was heading east into the Pacific, which experts said would help carry away any radiation.
Across the region, though, many residents expressed fear over the situation.
People in the port town of Soma had rushed to higher ground after a tsunami warning Monday — a warning that turned out to be false alarm — and then felt the earth shake from the explosion at the Fukushima reactor 25 miles (40 kilometers) away. Authorities there ordered everyone to go indoors to guard against possible radiation contamination.
"It's like a horror movie," said 49-year-old Kyoko Nambu as she stood on a hillside overlooking her ruined hometown. "Our house is gone and now they are telling us to stay indoors.
"We can see the damage to our houses, but radiation? ... We have no idea what is happening. I am so scared."
Meanwhile, 17 U.S. military personnel involved in helicopter relief missions were found to have been exposed to low levels of radiation after the flew back from the devastated coast to the USS Ronald Reagan, an aircraft carrier about 100 miles (160 kilometers) offshore.
U.S. officials said the exposure level was roughly equal to one month's normal exposure to natural background radiation, and the 17 were declared contamination-free after scrubbing with soap and water.
As a precaution, the U.S. said the carrier and other 7th Fleet ships involved in relief efforts had shifted to another area.
While Japan has aggressively prepared for years for major earthquakes, reinforcing buildings and running drills, the impact of the tsunami — which came so quickly that not many people managed to flee to higher ground — was immense.
By Monday, officials were overwhelmed by the scale of the crisis, with millions of people facing a fourth night without electricity, water, food or heat in near-freezing temperatures.
International scientists say there are serious dangers but little risk of a catastrophe like the 1986 blast in Chernobyl, where there was no containment shells.
And, some analysts noted, the length of time since the nuclear crisis began indicates that the chemical reactions inside the reactor were not moving quickly toward a complete meltdown.
"We're now into the fourth day. Whatever is happening in that core is taking a long time to unfold," said Mark Hibbs, a senior associate at the nuclear policy program for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. "They've succeeded in prolonging the timeline of the accident sequence."
He noted, though, that Japanese officials appeared unable to figure out what was going on deep inside the reactor. In part, that was probably because of the damage done to the facility by the tsunami.
"The real question mark is what's going on inside the core," he said.
Overall, more than 1,500 people had been scanned for radiation exposure in the area, officials said.

It's just like it was in Chernobyl. Guys said; some must go to war, some must go to clean out nuclear-disaster. That's it. Neither are too safe for human.
These are the kind of things, nobody want to do but someone have to.

the swedish newspapers are reporting that japan is lying about there nuclear plants, that the radiation leakage is in fact almost as bad as the tjernobyl accident........but this is the swedish newspapers and they suck ass.
I am really pissed off at the european news, Germany is as bad as well.
They are sitting 9000km away, don't understand Japanese, have NO fucking clue about nuclear physics and yet they all know what's going on. ::) ::)

Did you get that from Fox "News"?

Yep, cooling water obviously does not fill it's task and cores are about to melt. This can be sum huge shit. Some huge shit.
US guys already scared and took little distance. Aircraft carrier was moved little more away from Japan as they measured some radioactivity after sailing through radioactive clouds... This is not a good sign, right?
sources?
Fact is we dont know whats going on. every 3 hours or so they say it's "possibly stable" then "it might possible that we dont know if it might be unstable" etc etc with the medias playing word games to scare the shit out of the readers... The way CNN cover the whole thing is repulsive, with the background musics, the fake facial expressions of anchors who have a hard time hiding their boners...That's just unhealthy. The ads for cars, computers, pregnancy tests with actors smiling etc between the vids of the disaster on TV or on the internet just make you feel bad. What a strange world we live in.
My opinion is that there have been leaks of radioactive steams, clouds, vapors whatever you call it in the air , in the water, and that it's either flying over the sea or over the ground depending of the winds. That the workers and politics know that they have no other choice but to bullshit people and the whole world or people wouldnt be able to sustain the reality of what's going on. When you cant contain a problem, you focus on bullshiting people cause there's nothing else to do at this point. All governments do this. The fact is that all countries relying on nuclear plants cannot accept what is going on and might even help japan cover what can still be hidden from the public. I'm talking about leaks in the air of radioactive materials.
I think they should just give up the island already, evacuate everyone, including the searching teams, soldiers, wether they are japanese or foreigns and just relocate the japanese population in the US, period. The island is lost.
I feel for both koreas and china, other asian countries... if these reactors are leaking they ll keep leaking for years and everyone will be exposed somehow.

It's true, they had three people getting the amount of radiation you would normally get in one month.

Question for GH15
If Hide goes back to Japan and becomes exposed to this radiation, what kind of mutation could he be looking at?

there s no mutation. If you're exposed to radiations you just die.

What will this product do for us Vince?
Well, it will protect your thyroid glands....other than that if you are truly exposed to radiation poisoning then you're S.O.L. However, before you die of radiation poisoning, one of the side effects of it is that your eyes will turn blue so it will place you one step closer to being part of the "master race" if that makes any difference..... ::)

TOKYO – The operator of Japan's stricken Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear power plant says fire broke out again at its No. 4 reactor unit because the initial blaze was not completely extinguished.
Tokyo Electric Power Co. says the new blaze flared early Wednesday in the outer housing of the reactor's containment vessel. Fire fighters are trying to put out the flames.
On Tuesday, a fire broke out in the reactor's fuel storage pond — an area where used nuclear fuel is kept cool — causing radioactivity to be released into the atmosphere.
Officials are struggling to address the failure of safety systems at several of the plant's reactors after Friday's massive earthquake and tsunami.

CNN) -- Authorities in Japan are battling to resolve a series of crises at the nuclear power plant at Fukushima Daiichi, which was badly hit by last Friday's devastating earthquake and tsunami.
Here's a look at efforts to contain the damage and avert a potential nuclear meltdown. (all times and dates are local).
Friday, March 11
2.46 p.m. (0.46 a.m. ET/5.46 a.m. GMT): A magnitude 9.0 earthquake strikes an area 370 kilometers (230 miles) northeast of Tokyo, Japan, at a depth of 24.5 kilometers.
The offshore quake, the fifth largest worldwide since records began, sparks a major tsunami warning across the Pacific. Within an hour a wall of water up to 9 meters (30 feet) high hits the Japanese coast, sweeping away towns and villages in its path.
The quake causes serious damage at Tokyo Electric Power Company's (TEPCO) Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, about 65 kilometers south of Sendai. Three of the plant's six reactors, which came into service between 1970 and 1979, were already shut down for inspection at the time the disaster struck. Those still in operation are designed to also shut down in the event of a quake, with diesel generators pumping water around the reactors to keep them cool.
But when the tsunami hits, flood water swamps the generators, causing them to fail. The reactors begin to heat up.
8.15 p.m.: The Japanese government declares an emergency at Fukushima Daiichi power plant.
10.30 p.m.: Authorities reveal the cooling system at the plant is not working, and admit they are "bracing for the worst."
Saturday, March 12
2.06 a.m.: Radiation levels in the No.1 reactor at Fukushima are reported to be rising.
3.24 a.m.: Japanese trade minister Banri Kaieda warns that a small radiation leak could occur at the plant.
6.45 a.m.: TEPCO says radioactive substances may have leaked at Fukushima.
Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency says radiation near the plant's main gate is more than eight times the normal level.
4.19 p.m.: Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Agency reveals a small amount of radioactive cesium has escaped from the power plant, possibly caused by a fuel rod melting.
EXPLOSION: 6.22 p.m.: A hydrogen explosion at Fukushima's reactor No.3 blows the roof off the containment structure around the No.1 reactor and injures four people.
8.18 p.m.: Residents living within 20 kilometers of the plant are told to evacuate the area. Some 200,000 people leave.
8.54 p.m.: Authorities insist no harmful gases were emitted as a result of the explosion at the Fukushima plant, blaming the blast on "water vapor that was part of the cooling process."
10.35 p.m.: Radiation levels around the plant fall as officials prepare to flood the containment structure around the reactor with sea water to cool it. Meanwhile, authorities prepare to distribute iodine tablets to residents near the damaged nuclear plant to prevent radiation poisoning.
Sunday, March 13
3.20 a.m.: Three people randomly selected from a group of 90 test positive for radiation exposure in Fukushima prefecture.
5.37 a.m.: Japanese authorities say Saturday's explosion at the Fukushima Daiichi plant occurred outside the primary containment vessel, adding that the vessel's integrity has not been compromised.
4.46 p.m.: Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Endo warns of the possibility that a second explosion could happen at the No.3 reactor.
Monday, March 14
EXPLOSION: 11 a.m.: Hydrogen explosion at the No.3 reactor damages the cooling system at the No.2 reactor and injures 11 people.
A wall at the plant collapses as a result of the blast, but officials say the containment vessel surrounding the reactor remains intact.
Authorities begin pumping a mixture of sea water and boron into the No.2 reactor to cool its nuclear fuel rods.
Those residents living within 20 kilometers of the plant who have so far ignored evacuation orders are warned to stay indoors.
Up to 2.7 meters of the No.2 reactor's control rods are left uncovered because the pump which keeps them cool has run low on fuel after being left unattended. It causes them to heat up generating radioactive steam.
Tuesday, March 15
EXPLOSION: 6 a.m.: An "explosive impact" rocks the No.2 reactor -- the third blast at the plant in four days -- and damages its suppression pool.
7 a.m.: The U.S. Navy begins repositioning ships and planes after detecting low-level "airborne radioactivity" in the region. Three people on the U.S.S. Ronald Regan earlier tested positive for low levels of radiation.
8.30 a.m.: Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano says he cannot rule out the possibility of a meltdown at all three of the plant's damaged reactors.
He says radiation levels at the plant have increased to "levels that can impact human health", and warns anyone living within 20 and 30 kilometers of the plant to remain indoors.
Almost all of the plant's staff, about 800 people, are evacuated from the site, with just 50 remaining to carry out emergency operations.
FIRE: 8.54 am: Fire breaks out in a cooling pond used for nuclear fuel at the No.4 reactor -- which had been shut down before Friday's quake.
Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan warns that "there is still a very high risk of further radioactive material coming out," but urges the public to remain calm.
The government imposes a no-fly zone within a 30-kilometer radius of the plant.
11 a.m.: The fire in No.4 reactor is reported to have been extinguished.
The International Atomic Energy Agency reveals that radiation levels at the plant have been recorded at 167 times the average annual dose of radiation, but that level is expected to drop quickly.
11.10 p.m.: The IAEA reports that Monday's blast at reactor No.2 "may have affected the integrity of its primary containment vessel."
11.45 p.m.: TEPCO says it plans to use helicopters to pour water onto reactor No.4 in order to cool the nuclear fuel rods.
Wednesday, March 16
FIRE: 7 a.m.: The second fire in two days is discovered in the building of the No. 4 reactor at Fukushima Diiachi. This one is in the northeastern corner of the building, an official with Tokyo Electric and Power told reporters.

covering them with cement won't do shit. the russians did at chernobyl as more of a PR move than a containment issue. the only thing to do them is to dump water on them until the pump power's restored.

I'm sure they have experts there and they are doing whatever they can. People a lot smarter and more educated about physics than you or I are working on it.
Cover it with cement...... Brilliant fucking idea dude. Do you know anything about nuclear radiation?

At this point you don't want to cover the core with anything that could contain/seal gases... like concrete. If you do and gas pressure builds up and explodes you'd get a very nasty dirty bomb.

it's a bad joke.
Cant they cover the reactors with cement or something?
It screams amateurism, eh? Given that this is Getbig and everyone holds a doctorate from MIT, what do you suggest they do, oh wise one? Everyone on here has dabbled in nuclear research at one point.
They're actually close to finishing a new power cable that just might restore electricity to the cooling systems.
-
Well maybe you should go get a degree in nuclear physics and then get back at us.
I'm sure they have experts there and they are doing whatever they can. People a lot smarter and more educated about physics than you or I are working on it.
Cover it with cement...... Brilliant fucking idea dude. Do you know anything about nuclear radiation?
i m simply in awe. As you said it neither you or I know what's best to do, so stop acting like you know more. Nobody knows if it's indeed amateurish or if it's the best thing to do. Im just saying it looks amateurish, period.
But I tell you, the whole world will condemn the amateurism of what we re seeing right now in some days, weeks from now.

I can agree with you up to certain point about their inability to do something that seems fairly simple - spraying water at an inanimate object.
-
Yes, seriously.
Maybe you have missed it, but there was a major earthquake and Tsunami, the infrastructure is completely destroyed there.
Dropping water from helicopters is used in firefighting all over the world.
DK, uberman is not the sharpest tool in the shed if you haven't noticed.

I think you are bitching about nothing. They are shooting water at it with a truck, who cares what kind of truck it is. Bring it every kind of fucking truck, this ain't a show, it's an emergency.
Carry on....
-
that's the problem..they should have had several hi tech trucks with huge tanks ready yesterday or even sooner...and more than just two copters... this screams amateurism. I dont care what you guys think experts worldwide will criticize the way the whole thing has been "managed" by japanese.
I ve read government and TEPCO have been bullshiting each others and the population for days. The PM of japan said he was disgusted by the way TEPCO managed the thing and how they informed the governement.
Why do you think britain, US and the international atomic agency sent their own specialists to assess the situation by themselves these last two days?

ridiculous, they will catch more radiation on the flight then if they had stayed in Japan.

How far away do you have to be to be safe from the radiation?
-
How far away do you have to be to be safe from the radiation?
30km from the plant, highest estimate is 80km.
You catch more than the yearly dose of radiation on a flight from europe to Japan, makes no sense to fly to Europe to escape radiation.
If i would worry about radiation, i'd fly to Taiwan, Hong Kong or Hawaii.

Seriously, there is no problem with radiation where i am now, and my wife isn't pregnant.
IF there would be radiation levels that would cause problems, i would leave here, but right now getting on a plane would cause a higher radiation than staying here.
It's all pretty exaggerated.

Here's some more info. "I" is not me, i copied this fromsomewhere else.
I have just returned from a conference call held at the British Embassy in Tokyo. The call was concerning the nuclear issue in Japan. The chief spokesman was Sir. John Beddington, Chief Scientific Adviser to the UK Government, and he was joined by a number of qualified nuclear experts based in the UK. Their assessment of the current situation in Japan is as follows:
* In case of a 'reasonable worst case scenario' (defined as total meltdown of one reactor with subsequent radioactive explosion) an exclusion zone of 30 km would be the maximum required to avoid affecting peoples' health. Even in a worse situation (loss of two or more reactors) it is unlikely that the damage would be significantly more than that caused by the loss of a single reactor.
* The current 20km exclusion zone is appropriate for the levels of radiation/risk currently experienced, and if the pouring of sea water can be maintained to cool the reactors, the likelihood of a major incident should be avoided. A further large quake with tsunami could lead to the suspension of the current cooling operations, leading to the above scenario.
* The bottom line is that these experts do not see there being a possibility of a health problem for residents in Tokyo. The radiation levels would need to be hundreds of times higher than current to cause the possibility for health issues, and that, in their opinion, is not going to happen (they were talking minimum levels affecting pregnant women and children - for normal adults the levels would need to be much higher still).
* The experts do not consider the wind direction to be material. They say Tokyo is too far away to be materially affected.
* If the pouring of water can be maintained the situation should be much improved in time, as the reactors' cores cool down.
* Information being provided by Japanese authorities is being independently monitored by a number of organizations and is deemed to be accurate, as far as measures of radioactivity levels are concerned.
* This is a very different situation from Chernobyl, where the reactor went into meltdown and the encasement, which exploded, was left to burn for weeks without any control. Even with Chernobyl, an exclusion zone of 30 km would have been adequate to protect human health. The problem was that most people became sick from eating contaminated food, crops, milk and water in the region for years afterward, as no attempt was made to measure radioactivity levels in the food supply at that time or warn people of the dangers. The secrecy over the Chernobyl explosion is in contrast to the very public coverage of the Fukushima crisis.
* The Head of the British School asked if the school should remain closed. The answer was there is no need to close the school due to fears of radiation. There may well be other reasons - structural damage or possible new quakes - but the radiation fear is not supported by scientific measures, even for children.
* Regarding Iodine supplementation, the experts said this was only necessary for those who had inhaled quantities of radiation (those in the exclusion zone or workers on the site) or through consumption of contaminated food/water supplies. Long term consumption of iodine is, in any case, not healthy.
The discussion was surprisingly frank and to the point. The conclusion of the experts is that the damage caused by the earthquake and tsunami, as well as the subsequent aftershocks, was much more of an issue than the fear of radiation sickness from the nuclear plants.
Let's hope the experts are right!

I'm being sarcastic, but anytime there is a Nuclear Meltdown of any sort of any manitude, we know the full scope of everything...or the long lasting effects on health, one's mental state, etc. To say that it's "pretty exaggerated" is as about as premature as saying Evan Centopani will be Mr. Olympia (bbing related).
Exaggerated=Toyota unintended accelleration issues
PreMature Judgement of scope=Ralph Nader's "Unsafe at Any Speed"

All examinations have shown that the problem was ONLY with the drivers, mistaking the acceleration for the brake. There was no problem with the cars at all.

using water canon trucks? seriously????
Yes, why not. The Japanese goverment is so "calm" ::) that they treat this situation as if it was a little bush on fire on a camp. ::) ::) ::)

You're an idiot, did i say this before?
There was a big earthquake, the biggest in the history of Japan, do you think they are doing this because it'S so much fun??
Everything is destroyed, they have no other means. Do you understand that with your pea sized brain or not?
I just hope you're either unemployed or work in a factory putting things into plastic bags, nothing were you have to take responsibility or use your brain. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
i wish i was wrong ... but it seems TEPCO indeed lied to the governement about the gravity of the situation and has been amateurish in dealing with what was going on.. trying to cover how bad it was thus endagering the lives of millions just to save face of the company.

As for euros and americans being paranoid.... did u ever heard of chernobyl and how it affected them ? ::)

Dude, Wikileaks is ONE man with an old PC.
Tepco has fucked up, that is for sure, but their actions and the actions of the Jap Gov are monitored now by the whole world and the IAEA, they cannot "lie".
The situation is simply not easy to assess, and it changes from minute to minute, there is no lying in this.
These people are risking their own lives to stop this plant, give some respect for them. The technicians in the plant will surely die from the radiation, but they have not fled.

Tokyo (CNN) -- Japanese authorities launched an urgent attempt Thursday to avert a nuclear disaster by air, but initial attempts to drop tons of water at the quake-ravaged Fukushima Daiichi plant appeared to do little to lower potentially perilous radiation levels.
Helicopters made four passes in about a 20-minute span Thursday morning, dropping 7.5 tons of seawater each time on the facility's No. 3 reactor in order to cool its overheated fuel pool. Experts believe that boiling steam rising from that pool, which contains at least partially exposed fuel rods, may be releasing radiation into the atmosphere.
But hours later, the Tokyo Electric Power Company -- which runs the plant -- told Japan's Kyodo News that the operation didn't appear to lower radiation levels. The report suggested levels actually rose to about 3,000 microsievert per hour. It takes a year for a person to be naturally exposed to that level of radiation.
Officials from the government and Tokyo Electric had said Thursday that cooling down the No. 3 reactor was top priority.

Nuke official: Radiation extremely high
Japanese Defense Minister Toshimi Kitazawa, in conjunction with Prime Minister Naoto Kan, said he decided early Thursday to address the crisis from the air and ground despite concerns about exposing workers to radiation.
"We could not delay the mission any further, therefore we decided to execute it," Kitazawa told reporters.

12:10 17Mar11 RTRS-Japan a robot power everywhere except at nuclear plant
By Jon Herskovitz
TOKYO, March 17 (Reuters) - Japan may build robots to play the violin, run marathons and preside over weddings, but it has not deployed any of the machines to help repair its crippled reactors.
While robots are commonplace in the nuclear power industry, with EU engineers building one that can climb walls through radioactive fields, the electric power company running Japan's Fukushima Dai-ichi plant has not deployed any for the nuclear emergency.
Instead, its skeleton team has been given the unenviable and perhaps deadly task of cooling reactors and spent nuclear fuel on their own, only taking breaks to avoid over-exposure.
A science ministry official said a robot used to detect radiation levels is at the site of the accident in Fukushima, north of Tokyo, but nuclear safety agency official Hidehiko Nishiyama said: "We have no reports of any robots being used."
That robot would have come in handy early on Thursday when workers monitoring radiation had to back away from the plant because it was becoming too hot.
While Japan is renowned for its cutting edge technology, it also maintains an anachronistic element in its society that relies on humans for tasks that have given way to automation in many other parts of the world, such as operating elevators and warning motorists of road construction.
In one of Japan's worst nuclear accidents, two workers were killed in September 1999, when workers at a nuclear facility in Tokaimura, northeast of Tokyo, set off an uncontrolled nuclear chain reaction by using buckets to mix nuclear fuel in a lab.
Japan is a world leader in robots, using them to automate the most complicated manufacturing processes and to sift through rubble to look for victims in earthquakes.
Robots were also used after two infamous nuclear disasters -- Three Mile Island and Chernobyl, and will almost certainly be used at Fukushima for work in highly radioactive areas.
Kim Seungho, a nuclear official who engineered robots for South Korea's atomic power plants, said: "You have to design emergency robots for plants when they are being built so they can navigate corridors, steps and close valves."
The Fukushima plant was built in the 1970s, well before robots were able to work on sophisticated tasks.
Robots are in place in many nuclear plants for structured situations such as monitoring pipes and simple maintenance.
Kim, a deputy director in nuclear technology for the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, said budget constraints and denial have kept emergency robots out of many plants in his country and around the world.
"Nuclear plant operators don't liked to think about serious situations that are beyond human control," he said by telephone.

You are all overreacting.
No offense man, as youre one of my favorite posters, but your posting here screams of a man trying to keep himself assured that everyone else is freaking out over nothing, and that he is perfectly fine....
I think thats a normal defense mechanism. However, its not going to keep you alive/unharmed if shit goes down.
I understand not wanting to leave due to a job/family/whatever, but at some point you gotta weight the options, and decide if a short "vacation" is gonna hurt anything.

The amount of Cesium, Uranium and Plutonium that was released by that nuclear power plant, distributed thoroughout the entire Earth's atmosphere, will cause no damage to anyone.

My friend.
I understood you. But the problem is that our gov said "its getting better and soon it will be resolved" once before and now what are they doing? Stupid attempt of Helicopter with risking those peoples life.

http://video.foxnews.com/v/4593222/radioactive-fallout-reaches-california
Extremely tiny levels of radiation from Japan reached California early Friday, a Viennese diplomat has told the Associated Press.
Detectors in Southern California have picked up no radiation so far.
The diplomat, who spoke to the news agency on condition of anonymity, said readings from a Sacramento measuring station tracked by the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization were "about a billion times beneath levels that would be health threatening."
Experts including physicists at Chapman University and UC Irvine say any radiation reaching the United States would be extremely dilute and would present no health risk.
If any trace levels reach Southern California, it would most likely be in the afternoon, said Menas Kafatos, founding dean of the Schmid College of Science at Chapman, which uses satellite data to make forecasts including Pacific winds.
U.S. officials, including President Obama and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, say they expect no harmful levels of radiation to reach the United States.
The South Coast Air Quality Management District is posting daily updates on its website on readings from radiation monitors, including one in Anaheim; no radiation, even in trace amounts, had been detected as of late Friday morning, said Philip Fine, the agency's atmospheric measurements manager.
He said that although some models forecast air masses from Japan reaching the West Coast today, the models are flawed and the timing is highly uncertain.
"I wouldn't be surprised if very small amounts were detected," Fine said. "But these sensors are very, very sensitive. We would detect increases even at levels well below any type of significant health risk."
The district is working with public health agencies to monitor the situation, he said.
"The numbers we're seeing are just in line with what we've been seeing for years," he said. "If it does increase we're going to have updates on our web site."

Today would have been one of my favorite days of the entire year. I love St. Patrick's Day because I truly am part Irish!!
I have had a terrible day. I woke up feeling extremely depressed. I had another night that was totally filled with nightmares. Each dream was worse than the one before it.
I'm tired of having nightmares. I rarely (if ever) have good dreams. It has been this way all of my life.
It is very early for me to even be thinking of calling it a day. As depressed as I am, all that I want to do is sleep. I might not wake up until Monday.
I can feel myself going into one of my rages.
I am also fed up with being depressed. I want to know what true happiness is like. I would give anything to be able to leave Fresno for a few days. I have not been anywhere for FOUR YEARS!!!! I have been locked inside of my mobile home since last August!!!!

The last time I was in Japan we stayed at a Japanese Hotel somewhere on the south end of the country and the entire city was build on, over, or near an active volcano, so there was no need for hot water heaters because all the ground water was boiling hot directly from the pipes.
Just a couple of miles away for the hotel we took a condola ride over the top of one of one of the volcano vents and had to wear masks because the sulfer smell was so strong.
It never ceases to amaze me .... the places where people choose to live.
What is the name of that small down south of Fresno which is said to be the center of all of California's earthquakes? It's a beautiful spot with millionaire horse ranches in the hills and lots of evident earthquake activity in them thar hills too.
In one of the small restaurants there they have a photograph of a cow who fell into an earthquake fissure which closed up on her so that only her head was sticking out of the earth.
And I have a rich friend who owns a home in the Malibu hills overlooking one of California's most desirable oceanfront properties. The house is worth many millions but you gotta be a mountain goat to get up there and even those goats would find it impossible when the cliffside roads wash away during heavy winter storms.
And home insurance is just about impossible to get because there are no fire trucks made that are capable to reach those heights or maneuver those twisting roads.
But as far as I know the only nuclear reactor is many miles south on San Onofre Beach also referred to as Tressels if you are a surfing fanatic.
But I have yet to see a glowing surfer down that way ... just yet.

::)
No appreciable numbers of Africans or Latinos to speak of in Russia, yet their population is steadily dropping in recent years. Even their own people are leaving that shit hole at the first opportunity. :D Putin needs to come up with a plan to increase immigration or there will be a further erosion of the country's power and influence in the coming decades. As it stands, there major economic and strategic influence is when oil creeps up over $90/barrel and ability to shut off the oil supply to much of Europe whenever they choose to play economic/strategic hardball.

You call country whose capital posses the most billionaires in the world a shit hole?
HAHAHAHA, oh bro...
Yep, I sure do. What's the number of billionaires got to do with the cost of tea in China? I've lived in Russia and speak from experience. While those wealthy oligarchs that stole their way to wealth during the Soviet collapse, the majority of the people are struggling. They walk the streets of Moscow to their low wage jobs while the mega rich zip by in their black limos and Mercedes.
Of course criminals and traitors are leaving Russia with big noise in media... But they are not safe even in London when The Bear chooses to punish them... remember case traitor-Litvinenko 8)
It isn't just "criminals" leaving Russia. But keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better. ::) Sounds like you like drinking the Putin Kool-Aid a quart at a time. lol
I was being hyperbolic (on purpose) calling the country a shit hole. There are many good people in that country. Russia is not an entirely bad place, but it is RIFE with corruption and graft. Not to mention some major xenophobia issues. And there is NO DENYING that the country has had major population loss with people leaving post Soviet Union. Facts are stubborn things. ;)

Facts are stubborn things. ;)
Mormons are living in Russia for 2 year straight on their mission too, but they get kicked in the ass there. Try to speak to me in Russian, give it a try! You're post is winded and fasle on every point american lamer!!!

Africa and the middle east are giant experimental laboratories. No need for a natural disaster.
