Chased home: Mob attacks man in his house

ABOUT 11 P.M. on Sept. 9, dozens of youths with bats and pipes descended on a tidy residential area of Port Richmond looking for white teens who allegedly had attacked an African-American kid at Stokely Playground a couple of hours earlier.
Two fearful white teens spotted Mark LaVelle on Indiana Avenue near Belgrade Street and asked for help. Suddenly, the mob appeared. LaVelle, who said that he didn't know the two kids, who looked to be 13 or 14, ran with them into his nearby house.
" 'We got you, you white mother-------!' " LaVelle said he heard someone yell in the "mob" of black and Hispanic youths.
Inside his house, LaVelle, 37, called to his wife, Kim, 30, to go to their bedroom with their twin 13-month-old boys, Mark and Mason, and to call police. He also ordered his two other sons, 11 and 17, and his nephew, 7, to stay upstairs.
With the two teens hiding in the house, LaVelle, 5 feet 10, 220 pounds, a well-known sports-league organizer and coach in the community, went outside to try to calm the angry mob.
They were standing on his steps. One shouted, " 'Something's going to happen now!' " LaVelle recalled in an interview Friday at his house. LaVelle got nervous and went back inside, locking his door with a deadbolt.
But the attackers pounded on his front windows and kicked his wooden door so hard, it flew open and some of them entered his house.
"The first guy hits me with a pipe. The second guy knocks me in the face. All I'm hearing is my wife and kids screaming," said LaVelle, who feared that the next time they saw him, he would be in a casket.
He said that he was able to push the attackers out the door, but then a third man - who had a gun - tried to extend his arm. LaVelle grabbed onto the gunman's lower arm and shoulder so he couldn't raise the weapon. Then, police sirens screamed in the neighborhood, and the mob turned and ran.
LaVelle was able to identify three of the people from the melee. He said he did not know if they had been chasing the white teenagers, or if they were just trying to find someone to attack.
Police arrested Bergson Morin, 21, of Rosehill Street near Wyoming Avenue, Feltonville, as the man with the gun. They arrested Enrique Delgado, 32, of Rockland and C streets, Feltonville, as the man who hit LaVelle with the pipe. And they arrested a 17-year-old juvenile as the one who punched LaVelle in the face, giving him a black eye.
LaVelle said that the next day the mother of the juvenile came back with some other people, banging on his door, screaming. LaVelle, who was at a charity sports event, was called back to the house by one of his sons.
When he got home, LaVelle said, the mother yelled at him, " 'You white mother------, you got my kid locked up! You got my son locked up because he's black, you're white!' " The mother claimed that her son had been "a witness," not an attacker. To that, LaVelle said if that were true, it would come out in court.
But the mother, according to LaVelle, then yelled: " 'If you make it to court! I know where you live!' "
Police public affairs could not confirm yesterday if the mother has been arrested for making threats.
Patty-Pat Kozlowski, president of the Port Richmond on Patrol and Civic Association, said that police told her that the attack on LaVelle stemmed from the incident at Stokely Playground, Indiana Avenue and Thompson Street, a few blocks from LaVelle's house.
She heard that an African-American "kid got knocked off his bike or fell off" and white kids were laughing at him. The group of African-Americans and Hispanics came back for retaliation, Kozlowski believes.
She said she didn't know any of the people involved in the playground incident or in the attack on LaVelle. LaVelle said he also did not know anyone involved.
Morin and Delgado, who face charges of aggravated assault, conspiracy, burglary, weapons and related offenses, face a preliminary hearing in Municipal Court today. They are both in custody. Their family members could not be reached for comment.
Freddy Godoy, Delgado's attorney, said yesterday that someone Delgado knows "was probably related to the child" who was attacked in the playground. But he contends that Delgado was not one of the people who attacked LaVelle.
Richard Patton, Morin's attorney, declined comment yesterday.
Kozlowski, a legislative aide to City Councilwoman Joan Krajewski and a lifelong Port Richmond resident, wrote about the attack in The Spirit community newspaper, which serves the river wards. Since then, the story has created a lot of buzz in the predominantly white neighborhood.
Kozlowski and Maryann Trombetta, president of the Port Richmond Town Watch, both recalled the murder of Sean Daily, a white teen who was beaten and shot by bat-wielding youths, mostly Latino, in May 1989.
They don't believe that the attack on LaVelle started as a racial incident, but believe that there was a racial element to it when the mob "called him a white mother------" and when the juvenile's mother allegedly threatened LaVelle.
LaVelle, who runs sports leagues composed of youths and adults of different races, said he doesn't want any retaliation on the people who attacked him. But the attack has instilled fear in him and his family, and he hopes that there will be more of a police presence in the neighborhood.
His wife is afraid to stay at home, and "every time I hear a car, I'm looking out the door," he said.
"It's not a good way to live."

See, I'm very tempted to agree with you here since those punks definitely set themselves up for it.. but if you think about it, if he did blast a couple of buckshots in to the mob the end result would have been a massacre. The villains are human beings too. I prefer the alternative where less people get killed.. This is where a huge canister of pepper spray would have come in handy.

What the fuck are you talking about? They weren't trying to rob the guy, they were after the two guys who "allegedly" assaulted a black guy earlier. It wasn't about money in any way, shape or form.

Bear Assault or CS pepper spray would have been a good deterrent, once your door is broken down, you have to fire for effect.

My point was that if they're really about to hurt someone, either yourself or someone you care for, then fine, do what you have to do to stop it from happening as was the case here. As said, my first option as they break in would be to hose em down with a giant canister of pepper spray... if that doesn't work or defuses the situation I'd turn to guns. Unless they're doing some really heavy drugs, the pepper spray will knock em out.
But shooting someone for simply trespassing your property is a little too much in my opinion. I just don't get people that would defend their property by spraying with a 12 gauge just because they can.

In this situation, the home owner has all the moral right in the world to gun down these thugs like the diseased dogs they are. His wife and kids were upstairs hiding IN THEIR OWN HOME. What if the man goes down, then the family is left with what would essentially be no defence. He's it. (Unless she's armed, too, that is.)
When a stranger enters your home without a welcome and with obvious less-than-honourable intentions, it is the homeowner's right to eliminate any potential threat. If this includes smashing a frying pan over his head and killing him, then so be it.
Your home is your sanctuary. No person has the right to invade this space.

I think you're missing that the discussion is a little more in general now(at least that's how I interpreted Fortress post), the particular example in this thread is not the most common case.

In general...well yeah...I'm killing them dead. Not because i'm "eager to kill somebody" but the fact is they have forced my hand...I don't know what their intentions are, i can only assume if a group of people broke into my house, that they aren't there with an apple pie to have coffee .
And i'm not going to stand around and figure it out, only to realize too late that Me and my family are going to die...fuck that noise.
I wouldn't wish this on anybody...but in that situation, the time for talking is over, and you have to act swiftly and brutally...if it's any consolation...they made you do it...you were sitting on your ass watching TV...you didn't ask for this

My wife and I lived in a couple of "ghetto-fab" locals when we first got married and I remember one evening around 8PM someone started pounding on my front door. I opened the door thinking there was an emergency and said, "yes, can I help you?" to which the young black woman banging on my door said, "Is datcho car? Excuse me! Is datcho car?" My response was, "I'm sorry, you are?" To which she replied, "Look motherf***er, IS DAT CHO CAR?!!" It was my wife's car and we were parked in a reserved spot. When the reserved spots aren't being paid for they are open for regular use. This woman had just moved in to the apartment above ours, reserved that parking spot and was demanding we move our car. 2 months later she was gone.....found out her "boo" paid the first month's rent, she couldn't pay the second and was asked to leave. The back windshield of her car had a huge sticker that read "I CAN DO DAT". We moved to our home a year later, but that was one of few, personal encounters with that type of "ghetto fab" mentality I've had. No rhyme or reason for bad behavior.....just bad behavior.

I guess one way of settling this debate is if anyone's got access to any statistics that tell us how much more likely you are to survive if you're carrying a gun in say, a robbery or under any kind of deadly threat.
I see two sides of the coin.. first one is obvious, you're carrying a piece of metal that could blow someones brains out which usually works a as a pretty(!) good defense.
On the other hand if you're carrying a gun, how much more prone are you to making a situation that could have been fairly undramatic if you will(someone snatches your wallet or steals your car) into something where people are in way higher risk of getting killed, including yourself? Pull a gun on a villain and he or his buddy might pull one himself.
I'm willing to admit I'm wrong, I honestly care more about how to stay safe and I feel like pepper spray can deal with most situations but if guns really are a better way of protecting yourself without highly increasing the chances of a massacre, then so be it.
It might be relevant to the discussion that in the absence of pepper spray, I like to carry fairly big knives on me where ever I go. I never plan to use them unless I REALLY have to and in that case hopefully a big shining blade will work better as a deterrent and not as an instrument of death.

I am in full agreement with the idea that one's home is his or hers to defend if need be.
This isn't some tough-guy bullshit. It's about making a dedicated attempt to preserve your life and those of your family.
OF COURSE you'd weigh your options, for as little time as humanly possible, but if someone or a group of people enters your home unwelcome and with obvious bad intentions, and your family or friends are there, are you going to think it out ... or assume the worst case scenario (the wise move) and do what has to be done?

My experience from that place was usually that people that did not intervene got away unscathed and those who tried to fight back with knives or whatever usually ended getting their asses kicked or killed, or even in some cases killing the perpetrator. Usually the people that did not intervene could carry on with their lives but the ones who did either got effed up or sent to jail.
I do understand your take on this, believe me. But I'm at least trying to entertain the idea that pulling a gun is not always the safest option... and that's that.

A female friend of my brother was recently robbed. From what I was told, dude reached in her car, and pulled her out and beat and robbed her. She didn't know the person, it was near Baltimore, MD. There was a bus stop nearby with people there, and none try to help or intervene. Since it was morning time, people were going to work, and she tried getting the attention of cars that were on the road---no help. People would not stop to help. That was somebodies, sister, girlfriend, or daughter. When we as people start to not want to help due whatever reasons, that's when the crimes get bolder, as the perps thnk that they can get away with it. And it's odd how the same people who won't help, are the ones screaming why aren't the police comic fast enough, when they need help.

A gang of maniacs break into your house with bats and you have a wife and two small children upstairs , they changed the dynamic of the situation and I would put them down , no questions about it.

I'm not saying I would quote statistics either in a similar spot. Discussing on the internet what might be safest in this and that scenario(which I'm trying to do) probably won't affect my actions that much if I were to find myself facing a threat like that. BTW huge factor alot of people aren't taking into account with these make believe what if scenerios.....dogs. You are less likely to be broken into if you have dogs, no intruder wants to deal with the barking or possible biting of dogs, so they will move on to a house that doesn't have dogs. Hey it's worth a shot if you got the opportunity for it. I'm assuming you've been sprayed as well? Most people drop down coughing in pain within a couple of seconds after exposure and depending on how strong the spray is they might turn blind immediately. If you got a big canister that sprays wide it works pretty damn well for crowd control. But again, if that were to fail, use your gun.

I moved to trailer park and had crackhead trying to open my door looking for the dealer who used to live there.
I live in a nicer digs these days, but I never let it change the basic human need to defend oneself. Shit ain't safe out there.
Be prepared, and you're actually LESS worried/paranoid in most situations because "Oh, I got this..." You're not the person in denial saying "they won't do anything.." and praying.

and guess what....as i was driving my daughter to karate LAST NIGHT....I turn the corner and police have set up a roadblock, make me and my daughter exit the vehicle, and check the car and make me open the trunk too.
Turns out an 11 year old girl was missing, and they fear she was abducted by two men seen driving through the neighborhood.
Moral to the story....it can happen to YOU, no matter where you live. i was shaking, and i probably won't let my kid out of my sight for the next ten years.

I'm from northern Europe. Grew up in a suburb known for its crime and a lot of bank robbers etc usually come out of that place. It's not THE safest place.. but at the same time, gated communities here are pretty much unheard of, almost no one feels the need to carry any sort of weaponry and the people that are affected by crime are usually quite unlucky or criminals themselves. I don't know, maybe the mentality of criminals might be different here.. or maybe it's just the drugs.

ive had my ass whooped a lot. lot of famiy drug stuff. Cousin's date killed in a push-in home invasion. Family full of drugs and crime and jail. My brother shot a guy, my other brother stabbed a guy. One went to prison, one didn't. I was an elementary teacher who moved the hell away from it.
Not pretty and not anything to be proud of.
Did it make me a non-trusting MFer? Sure. has it saved my skin at least once? Yes. Probably more, because I don't smell like prey, I act like a predator.

Someone asked me if I got children and the answer to that question is no. But I have worked with children quite a lot and I can imagine that the sense of responsibility you get when the safety of a child is in your hands gets magnified hundred fold if the kid is your own. Caring for your offspring(or any defenseless creature!) is an extremely strong instinct. So in that sense I don't blame you guys for being trigger happy although I don't wish death upon anyone unless they really have it coming.

For home defense nothing really beats a good shotgun. With a tube extension you get more capacity and different loads make it very versatile.
These are absolutely awesome if you can get them tuned in correctly. In might take a little bit of money to make them run perfect but holy shit you can take out a small army with one of these.

A critically wounded 2-year-old girl was among four people shot Tuesday night in South Philadelphia when a mob of girls charged a house and gunfire erupted in a dispute stemming from a high school fight, police said.
A 10-year-boy and a 59-year-old woman, who live in the same house as the toddler, also were wounded and were hospitalized in stable condition. A 25-year-old man was shot in the finger.
Police were called at 7:31 p.m. to the 1200 block of South Bucknell Street in response to a report of a melee and gunfire.
The 2-year-old was shot in the stomach and hip areas and in a hand, police said. The boy was shot in the right calf. Both were being treated at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
The woman was shot in the left leg, police said. She was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
The gunman was described as black, 25 to 30 years old, weighing about 210 pounds and standing about six feet tall, police said. He was wearing a white T-shirt, blue jeans, and a fitted baseball cap. He was last seen running south on Bucknell.
Police spokesman Lt. Raymond Evers said a fight among girls from South Philadelphia High School led to another altercation and, ultimately, the shooting.
Girls involved in the fight showed up at a 12-year-old girl's house on Bucknell, Evers said. "The girls were pushing into the house," Evers said.
Some neighbors got involved, and one girl called an unidentified man, Evers said. A group of men arrived at the scene and the fighting escalated. Two men pulled out guns and one of them began firing.
Chief Inspector Scott Small said the two children were in the house when they were wounded. Blood was visible on the living room floor just inside the front door. The woman was in front of the house when she was hit, Small said.
Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey also responded to scene and denounced a culture of violence among young people.
A neighbor said he saw "a pack of kids raising hell" down the block. Soon afterward, he heard gunshots. The neighbor said he called 911 and by the time he got off the phone, a patrol car had arrived. By that point, everyone involved in the melee had scattered.
The officer "ran through the house and he came out with the baby" and sped off, the neighbor said.

Chased home: Mob attacks man in his house

ABOUT 11 P.M. on Sept. 9, dozens of youths with bats and pipes descended on a tidy residential area of Port Richmond looking for white teens who allegedly had attacked an African-American kid at Stokely Playground a couple of hours earlier.
Two fearful white teens spotted Mark LaVelle on Indiana Avenue near Belgrade Street and asked for help. Suddenly, the mob appeared. LaVelle, who said that he didn't know the two kids, who looked to be 13 or 14, ran with them into his nearby house.
" 'We got you, you white mother-------!' " LaVelle said he heard someone yell in the "mob" of black and Hispanic youths.
Inside his house, LaVelle, 37, called to his wife, Kim, 30, to go to their bedroom with their twin 13-month-old boys, Mark and Mason, and to call police. He also ordered his two other sons, 11 and 17, and his nephew, 7, to stay upstairs.
With the two teens hiding in the house, LaVelle, 5 feet 10, 220 pounds, a well-known sports-league organizer and coach in the community, went outside to try to calm the angry mob.
They were standing on his steps. One shouted, " 'Something's going to happen now!' " LaVelle recalled in an interview Friday at his house. LaVelle got nervous and went back inside, locking his door with a deadbolt.
But the attackers pounded on his front windows and kicked his wooden door so hard, it flew open and some of them entered his house.
"The first guy hits me with a pipe. The second guy knocks me in the face. All I'm hearing is my wife and kids screaming," said LaVelle, who feared that the next time they saw him, he would be in a casket.
He said that he was able to push the attackers out the door, but then a third man - who had a gun - tried to extend his arm. LaVelle grabbed onto the gunman's lower arm and shoulder so he couldn't raise the weapon. Then, police sirens screamed in the neighborhood, and the mob turned and ran.
LaVelle was able to identify three of the people from the melee. He said he did not know if they had been chasing the white teenagers, or if they were just trying to find someone to attack.
Police arrested Bergson Morin, 21, of Rosehill Street near Wyoming Avenue, Feltonville, as the man with the gun. They arrested Enrique Delgado, 32, of Rockland and C streets, Feltonville, as the man who hit LaVelle with the pipe. And they arrested a 17-year-old juvenile as the one who punched LaVelle in the face, giving him a black eye.
LaVelle said that the next day the mother of the juvenile came back with some other people, banging on his door, screaming. LaVelle, who was at a charity sports event, was called back to the house by one of his sons.
When he got home, LaVelle said, the mother yelled at him, " 'You white mother------, you got my kid locked up! You got my son locked up because he's black, you're white!' " The mother claimed that her son had been "a witness," not an attacker. To that, LaVelle said if that were true, it would come out in court.
But the mother, according to LaVelle, then yelled: " 'If you make it to court! I know where you live!' "
Police public affairs could not confirm yesterday if the mother has been arrested for making threats.
Patty-Pat Kozlowski, president of the Port Richmond on Patrol and Civic Association, said that police told her that the attack on LaVelle stemmed from the incident at Stokely Playground, Indiana Avenue and Thompson Street, a few blocks from LaVelle's house.
She heard that an African-American "kid got knocked off his bike or fell off" and white kids were laughing at him. The group of African-Americans and Hispanics came back for retaliation, Kozlowski believes.
She said she didn't know any of the people involved in the playground incident or in the attack on LaVelle. LaVelle said he also did not know anyone involved.
Morin and Delgado, who face charges of aggravated assault, conspiracy, burglary, weapons and related offenses, face a preliminary hearing in Municipal Court today. They are both in custody. Their family members could not be reached for comment.
Freddy Godoy, Delgado's attorney, said yesterday that someone Delgado knows "was probably related to the child" who was attacked in the playground. But he contends that Delgado was not one of the people who attacked LaVelle.
Richard Patton, Morin's attorney, declined comment yesterday.
Kozlowski, a legislative aide to City Councilwoman Joan Krajewski and a lifelong Port Richmond resident, wrote about the attack in The Spirit community newspaper, which serves the river wards. Since then, the story has created a lot of buzz in the predominantly white neighborhood.
Kozlowski and Maryann Trombetta, president of the Port Richmond Town Watch, both recalled the murder of Sean Daily, a white teen who was beaten and shot by bat-wielding youths, mostly Latino, in May 1989.
They don't believe that the attack on LaVelle started as a racial incident, but believe that there was a racial element to it when the mob "called him a white mother------" and when the juvenile's mother allegedly threatened LaVelle.
LaVelle, who runs sports leagues composed of youths and adults of different races, said he doesn't want any retaliation on the people who attacked him. But the attack has instilled fear in him and his family, and he hopes that there will be more of a police presence in the neighborhood.
His wife is afraid to stay at home, and "every time I hear a car, I'm looking out the door," he said.
"It's not a good way to live."

The man who shot dead three co-workers before being killed by police Thursday had complained about racism at work and was recently notified about erratic driving on the job, his shop steward said.
Mike Ambrosio, who was shot in the arm, told the San Jose Mercury News that he had confronted Shareef Allman less than a week ago about having turned over a truck and snagging overhead wires when he left the truck bed in the air at the quarry where they worked in Cupertino, Calif.
"He's had so many accidents and always said that because he's African American, the company was after him," Ambrosio told the newspaper. "He was an unsafe driver."
Ambrosio added that he told Allman last Thursday that "no one has ever had so many accidents in the company like you have."
When Allman started shooting, Ambrosio said, he shouted: "You guys want to (expletive) with me? You want to (expletive) with me?"
Allman was on the run for a day before being cornered, shot and killed Thursday morning, law enforcement sources told NBC affiliate KNTV.
Allman was shot by police in the same Sunnyvale neighborhood that police had searched a day earlier.
