I found out (again) that it REALLY sucks to work under a boss. A man should be his own boss, if you do allright you can be proud, if you suck it's your own fault. Bosses SSSSUUUUCCCCKKKK !!!!!!!!!!!!
I hate bosses.

In short..when you work for someone you're putting all your eggs into one basket. You're expendable. With your own business if you lose a client, you don't lose your entire income, go get another client. Make your own schedule, more freedom...unless you intend to grow.

I'm reading a good book about this currently:
"The Midas Touch" by Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosacki... I definitely recommend it.

Nice music, big boss hardtimes... I may be ignorant, but who is this ?

You get to learn about all kinds of fun shit like quarterly taxes, schedule C filings with the IRS, commercial insurance, self employment tax, then theres the licensing depending on your business. All of this before you ever get to see a penny.

what is your exact location

Spot on. I have 2 businesses after working for "the red tape corporate world" for a number of years and having a short, fat asshole tell me what to do and that has no life giving me orders. I will never go back to the corporate world fuck them.

I agree JnN, I've been a fool thinking a guy could be satisfied working for someone else. I'm gonne correct this all (this is a TA statement right ... ;D)
-
It does suck for sure, but -cliche, cliche- it can be damn hard to earn enough income to pay the bills and sleep well.
In 2008 I had a pretty successful year, so I expected I could quit my job within a year. Unfortunately 2009 till now were average/bad years, but fuck, I'm not a quitter, so I keep doing my best to make that important step.

I read coaches post lol, none of it made sense as usual
most people who say theyre their own boss aren't actuall bosses, I mean being a personal trainer is not being ur own boss, really the term "your own boss" makes no sense, people who say this say it to sound cool or something...
the responsibility of having to make ur own income is difficult to deal with, working along affects ur personality, and everyone who is actually self employed is taking much risk in order to not have a boss. People who seek this position tend to have difficulty interacting with people... they tend to make ok or very little money, and their social problems get worse and worse and soon their shitty "self employment" is the only employment they can have because they never learned how to get along with others
I have been my own boss to so speak, really I was no ones boss and even though I made my own hours.... really this just meant I had no off time, if I slept it means I was on break lol, and indeed I have had to work hard for the whatever interviewing skills I have now. As soon as I walk through the door the interviewer gets the vibe that I walk around like I own the place, I work hard not to have this attitude, maybe I don't actually look this way but I am self conscious of it, and this has to do with me being self employed for 4 years

I got money that says you couldn't do my job for a week. What cha say big mouth?

lol i'm sure you are an important fella ::) and you are needed and no one else can do u what u do.... lol
listen, the point is this... if u want to be ur own boss in order to avoid responsibility, in order to avoid people having power over you... you can maybe find soemthing that pays ur mortgage, but if u arent driven to it by sheer talent or love for it, my advice is don't take the plunge, relate to your boss better or find another job, because there's a good reason few people actually operate companies and most people are employees, owning ur own shit means waaaay more risk, and if u arent spectacular at what u do then that risk will bite u in the ass
-
i work for a family business. i can do shitty and still get paid.

Answer the question. I have 235 athletes for the week plus my regular business. With the athletes design the program based on positions, assess injured athletes and then design the pre-hab program based on the type of injury. Design the program based on soft-tissue work, activation, dynamic warm/mobility, core, plyos, speed (lateral/lineal). Were done with football till January. Right now it's baseball and soccer. Oh yeah, while you think it's so easy. We start speed camps back up for 40 kids in a couple of weeks......design that program as well. One other thing, all the programs MUST be designed with the reduction of injury in mine.....I'll be waiting.

I have worked for myself for the last 9 years. It's not easy! It's fucking hard 24 7. constant roller coaster.
Always looking for new clients, always dealing with existing clients, always haggling over prices, always dealing with accounts payable, employees suck and are lazy, etc.
the benefits are that you do whatever the heck you want on your terms, but when you fuck up, there is no one to blame but yourself.

Owning a business isn't all sunshine and rainbows, it's a huge sacrifice, what you decide to do better be something that you are absolutely passionate about and are ready to devote your life to. There is no clocking in or out, it's a 24-7, 365 gig. My family has owned a sucessful business since the 40's, passed on from my Great Grandfather, to my Granpa, and now my dad. The reason why all these men are so sucessful is because they have no life other then this business. My dad has a boatload of $$$, yet he hasn't been on vacation in over 8 years. You can say he's been on vacations if you count the business conventions he goes to twice a year, one in Vegas and one in North Carolina.
I've been on both ends of the spectrum, I've worked for and still help out (when I'm in town) for my dads company, I've worked for a friend bartending/managing a small bar, and the days are at least, 12-14 hour days. The profits, if sucessful are unbelievable, but these guys never really get to enjoy their $$$. Sure my Dad drives to in from work in a nice BMW and gets to live in a nice big house, but thats it.. Working for a big corporation has it's advantages, I get full coverage (medical-dental) I have job security, and a union employee. I clock in and out and don't have a business always on my concious. I do want to own my own business, but I made a decision early on in life (through witnessing my dad) that I was going to enjoy the prime years of my life, and when I feel that I am ready to completely devote my life to a business (I estimate somewhere around 35) is when I'll finally take on this venture.
Good luck man, make sure you love what you do, thats my best advice.

i thought everyone on getbig owned their own business, island, brothel, lamborghinis, MMA gym, bank, UGL steroid lab, etc.

most likely I could write up a bunch of shit and it wouldn't make a difference, training is just not that hard, I would tell what I used to do for a living but of course you couldn't do what I did for a living... I was good enough to work for 2 months and take 6 months off sometimes lol, it's not really the point whether someone can do someone else's job, this does not matter at all
-
see, I made a joke there
it was a joke
come on everyone. laugh at my joke which is based on something that totally isn't true
-
Te biggest problem working for yourself is that you never know how much is coming in. Some times are great, other times are slow or dead, and it adds a lot of stress mentally.

who the fuck snorts heroin

who the fuck snorts heroin
a handsome idiot
btw, with all due respect Coach but being a successful trainer has more to do with being a GOOD SALESPERSON than it does actual knowledge
again, notice I used the word "successful" and not "knowledgeable"

personal trainign has mostly to do with convincing people that lying on a bench and pushing bar with weight on it is an important life skill

Big Boss Man was great, my brother would always play as him in the old WWF Superstars arcade game and I would complete our tag team with the Ultimate Warrior.
-
Having my own gym would be cool. If I had the place, I would work a good couple of years so I could get the money for the investment and then I would go for it, but paying rent sucks, so probably I wouldn't do it.
-

Thats great, but I'm not a "personal trainer" per se. Hope this helps.
BTW, probably couldn't do your job nor would I want too. I couldn't live with that kind of pay cut!

Coach is a hard working successful man. He is the classic example of the American dream. How he did it with his limited mental capacities escapes me. But I digress....What was I saying again?

I started working for myself at 20, turning 47 this month. Plenty of hard times but no regrets. My advice is to find something you love doing then work out a way to make a living from it.
It feels like you never really work at all. I still look forward to coming to my gym(s) every day and now love the challenge of expanding the businesses and expos/contests that I run. It is pretty satisfying when you get it right, even if it takes a long time to get there.
Two pieces of advice
1. Never quit or give up on yourself
2. Dont worry about what you can't do, worry about what you can do.
Live your dream, life is short.

I have my own business, and while it is great to think you are the boss, sometimes that is not true. I have employees, but am always working for someone, whether it be a GC or a municipality/govt agencey(I am in construction related field). the old adage is true, sometimes you own the business, and sometimes it owns you. There are nights when you just can't turn it off, and you stress about bids, or how you are going to finish upcoming projects, or payroll etc. I very rarely don't have anything on the books, but I am lucky that way. I know how to bid work, and am willing to travel. I am sending a crew to Picayune, MS next month(I am in Va), but there is money in it, and hey, I'm not going. Seriously though, as much as it can get pretty hairy sometimes, I wouldn't trade it for anything. I like being responsible for how my life ends up, and providing for myself. I live decent, have savings, etc, and plan to be able to retire by 50(I am 30 now). I worked in corporate America, and while it can be great, anyone who thinks that you have job stability is a fool. I have seen many laid off because in the end,you are just a number. I guess it all depends on what you want, and how much shit you are willing to put up with. I put up with alot, but am compensated well for it. I say, if you are smart, have an idea, and are serious about it, go for it.

Ok ok.. so when is the thread started going to pitch his MLM super Greens product to all us?! Thats how all these guys start their conversations.

Coach, I've been reading your posts ever since I discovered getbig, more than a year ago....
and pretty much everything you write has to do, in one way or another, with re-enforcing and justifying your tremendous biases. I wonder if you are even capable of approaching something objectively in abstract terms and not automatically think about how this applies to your own life situation.
From what you write, it looks as if you are enjoying some measure of success. Good on you. I imagine that knowledgeable coaches who do not abuse their trainees but also do rehab will always be in demand.
But the main hurdle in working self-employed is that you are massively susceptible to economic downturns. Small business, like the ones most self-employed people own, are the first to suffer during recessions and crashes. And we've already had two of those in the last decade. If you work for corporations etc, it's true, you'll have to put with your measure of shit. But your job will be more secure had you been on your own, come what may.
Raymondo...do you know how often I'm attacked on here for speaking my mind? I responded to apply85 because it was a direct attack on me and I responded. (go back to his post). As one of probably a 1000 trainers on here I responded in defense of what I do as a trainer. Do you think if I were in another business I would be posting about it? No..probably not.
But as for the highlighted, while you are correct in seeing a down turn in bad economic times, as I've stated many many times in the past, you have to position your business to be able to handle those down times. It's a part of a good long term business strategy no matter what the business. I would say 9 out of 10 times businesses fail in a bad economy (or even in a good economy) because of having too much debt. If you limit or even take away that debt profits my go down but you don't have the burden of debt with creditors breathing down your neck and can you easily survive a downed economy. Thats in a small nutshell. You still have income.
-
no it's not economic downturns, economic downturns happen not very often, it's the every day variance of business and lack of stability that is difficult... some months u make money some months you lose money, that's right LOSE, who goes to work to lose money? People who own their own businesses... personal trainers again are not a part of this group, they risk no capital, they invest almost nothing, they are like massagers who go to people's homes instead of working in someone's office, the difference is really arbitrary
-

People who make their sole living being a good PT do take risks and they do invest...they have to. PT's that have their own studios or small gyms take risks. Even though I have other trainers that train our general clientele out of one facility I have another that I train most of my athletes out of (soon to be bigger). ANYTIME you decide to go out on your own you're taking a risk. If you're the type of PT that just in it for the extra money...then yes, there is very little investment but it's an investment none the less. Time is an investment, setting up your office, bookkeeping, marketing, etc, etc..is all an investment.
And since you lumped me in that category, I invest an average of $40-50k per year in profits back into my business.
-
if you own ur own studio you are a studio owner, not longer just a personal trainer, the personal training is nothing, if you do not put soemthing called capital into a business, you are insulting business owners by calling yourself self employed, this is what makes being self employed fucking risky...
if you think time is an investment, this means everyone is a business owner right, even the guy working a mdconalds cash register because he invests his time right, lol, go do your training instead of arguing with me
-

Debating with you is easier. I'm just sitting here doing paper work while bullshitting on here. Here's quick definition of self-employment........you work for yourself. Hahaha!
-
nobody fucking works for themselves, your client pays you to complete a service, you are working for them, this work for yourself, being your own boss, these are phrases of arrogance... to be honest I never even insulted you, I said ur first post in this thread is rubbish, your posts are mostly shit anyways... time is an investment? hell no it isn't, everyone has fucking time, to say that ur time is an invenstment.... this is what people tell themselves to feel confident, like their time is important lol, if people want to own their own businesses in order to say these things, in order to talk shit, they are in for it. If you are a personal trainer, and you have to pay rent and almost no one wants to be for your time because lets face it your job has little value, and you think you've found a potential client... trust me you will kiss that client's ass harder than you've ever kissed any boss's ass, self employed - LOL
-
Hey Coach, are you hiring?
-
-
I'm surprised anyone sits down to argue with you, you deluded wanker, you're interested in scoring points not having a discussion. Serves you right I suppose, as your thought processes are disjointed and as a result you digress constantly (I think this has been explained to you before)
You still continue bickering with coach even though he shut you right up upon revealing he re-invests a nice chunk of profits back into his business... while you sit unemployed in some dingy new york tenement slam, wanking furiously over xHamster videos, pretending that you're some sort of intellectual writing novels and short stories...
I never even called coach a personal trainer, i said pts aren't their own bosses or business owners and he assumed I was talking about him, no no no, I've even cleared this up in a previous post, and I'm not doign this to score points, that's why im not careful how I phrase things and don't bother to make posts with an introduction and supporting paragraphs and a conclusion, aint no essay writing contests, i have been so called self employed and so I'm giving advice from experience... my avice is don't do it lol, if you are thinking about it that means it's a bad idea, people who are successfully self emplpyed don't think about it, they are driven to do what they do, they cant help but do it
and im not doign this to score poins, otherwise I would bother pretend to be more intelligent than I am by reviewing my posts, making complete senences lol, using correct grammer... no no, I dont pretend because I don't have to, I'm also no phony intellectual who writes in order to have some kind of image, I do it because that's what I've been doing since high school, it is my favorite hobby
anyways, do not make this thread about me, I've said what I've said and any business owner will say the same thing really, that's that
-
lol, i read the first part of ur post, I've got so many pms in my inbox of people saying that me and gh15 are the reason they read this board, people saying thanks for being honest, people asking me for advice on women, every time I pm someone on here or somewhere else about an unrelated topic they tell me how much they enjoy reading my posts on whatever board they know me as ap85 on... this is why I'm on this board, I can express myself freely and people ACTUALLY take what I say to heart... this is very encouraging for me, and even your attention is encouraging for me because I know you've read my post history and you like what I say and you want me to talk to you and this is your way of getting my attention... I understand ok, listen my balls are hairy as fuck and I lke to get them licked by females, so I need someone to come and shave my balls for me no homo, and i need you to dress like an oomaloompa, dont ask ok, if I am going to let you shave my balls i need you to dress like an oompaloompa, I will be wearing a top hat an da cane
-
LOL Has the revelation of the failure of your revolting advice-thread been so stressful to you?
What is this drivel you've written? Some homosexual-revealing meltdown induced by your getting massively owned? Showing your true colours are ya now gay boy?
If you're so popular and you receive "countless" messages, how come hardly anyone replied to your thread, you nauseous little worm?
ha ha ha
LOL, I think we found Reeves' European alter ego....I like this guy. Looking forward to more of your posts.

Hey Coach, are you hiring?
Yes.

Cheers, Coach... btw I'm more than a foot taller than Reeves. Plenty more.

it wasn't a failure, go back further into my post history to see how much attention my "advice" on women has gotten in the past, you will see why i dont care what u say to me here, ive gotta go train back now

Hey 243 I read in the newspaper that the Finnish are very racist.....that's true ?
Nah, I don't think it is.
It's on wall now because "True Finns" got a huge win in parliamentary elections and some of them are little harsh when it comes to these things.

Don't know, but a lot of hist postings contain a hidden "kick me in the jimmie" request.
BTW, I just saw that a KMITJ also stands for a cocktail:
Ingredients:
1/2 oz Jägermeister
1/2 oz Jack Daniels
1/2 oz Jose Cuervo
1/2 oz Firewater
Mixing instructions:
Combine in mixing tin with ice, shake and strain.

I'm not an alcoholic by far, but statistically it would be wiser to drink less....well I don't smoke anymore and don't do drugs no more... ;D

Nah, I don't think it is.
It's on wall now because "True Finns" got a huge win in parliamentary elections and some of them are little harsh when it comes to these things.
Isn't that the one with the first ms O, kiki something (don't feel like googling)...

You know I'm a doctor, what do you do? Something with TV/media I think ?

I think almost everybody knows she's former bodybuilder but doubt most remember the title name.
She though often underlines it in interviews that she is former Ms Olympia ;D

Working for yourself means you basically become the business you sell. If you build houses your a contractor, just as a bber, a musician, or an actor are professionals first people second.
I'd like to become a full time consultant when I get older, but that'll take quite a while, it's only worth the effort, if you wanna become something other than yourself, I still haven't decided if I'll ever go that route, but if not I'll probably just work part time.

For a good reason (=training!). Me a media person? Hell no, that world is full of fake people and gays. I was trading in derivatives on 7 U.S. option markets for over a decade. Right now I'm preparing myself for forex trading. Besides that I'm a job slave in the distribution branch. This provides a steady income to pay the bills and sleep well :)

what do u mean you are preparing yourself for forex trading, ur getting into forex just now?

Especially research and programming work. It doesn't matter if certain currencies are high or low, as long as they move there are opportunities.

Well, you asked "ur getting into forex just now?" Maybe interpreted wrong, but it sounds like a warning.
-
no what u said is just redundant

Again, it was my reply on your question (or was it a rhetorical one?), that's all

I think this thread is getting redundant.... >:(

An owning of epic fucking proportion!!

God fucking damnit I am not the only one who notices this. Everyone wants to be fucking rich and clear 6 figures a year yet most people are really fucking lazy. FUCK.
I'm making this about you, lad! You've got massive pretentions that are terribly served by your various ineptitudes and motivations. You even had the audacity to try and start a "pm question answered" type of threads freely dispensing advice on how to mindfuck women!

Too bad it never went anywhere what with a grand total of THREE replies, one of which is yours, eh my little inadequate wannabe mentor?
Nice one... I see you are also prone to polarising conclusions. Self-employment not worth it as opposed to supervised employment? It would behoove you to instead recognise each mode's relative strengths and weaknesses... but no, bipolar, black-white conclusions give the illusion that you know and are absolutely sure of what you're talking about... like I've just proven you just want to score points.
Your arguments are full of fallacies... it doesn't take an intellectual to see through them.
You need to be taught the difference between critical thinking vs fallacious thinking, which you clearly were never taught at school and never picked up on your own.
Here's a starting point; http://www.laetusinpraesens.org/links/webcrit.php (http://www.laetusinpraesens.org/links/webcrit.php)
Until then, please... stop arguing... stop dispensing advice... fuck off instead.
And who the fuck are you bro?

Maybe it's my stick-in-the-mud personality but there's something about being self employed which makes chores of activities which are supposed to be enjoyable. I think it has to do with being so busy, hurried, and stressed that there's no yippie left for much except pure leisure. I'm talking feet on the desk, beer, nachos, salsa, and Getbig. Going out to dinner or a parties is for people who don't know what real downtime is.
Ime, know that you are occasionally, or frequently depending on how bad you are at this, going to have to live for your business and not much else. You don't get to pick when that happens. Your clients do. Sometimes your employees do too. And your girl will not be understanding about it. Basically, you're going to have to keep your shit together and kick ass while being drawn and quartered by a bunch of demanding jerks. Price accordingly.
