Title: North Carolina -Relocation ( Serious Question)
Post by: NYSTATEOFMIND on May 24, 2012, 07:16:35 PM
I am thinking about moving to North Carolina at possibly next year. Company has offices in both Charlotte and Raleigh ( RTP). I will probably go visit both places at some point but which area is actually better for a fella in his mid 30s. Which has more nightlife ( shit to do) culture etc and is safer ( if i wanna raise a family)...i get mixed reviews when i do research

Raleigh.  Not as cosmopolitan as Charlotte, but Charlotte proper is a shit hole. Sorry.

NC State is located in Raleigh so there are plenty of bars & clubs.
Raleigh is closer to the coast- Outter Banks.
Charlotte has a huge Nascar thing
Lots of really bad neighborhood in and around Charlotte.

few yrs ago, Raleigh was voted best place to live.

Not sure now, but the NC school system was  ranked pretty low...something to consider if you have kids.

Raleigh Research Triangle---Raleigh/Durham/Garner area has lots of educated singles, many from up north. Many come to go to school at Duke, UNC, NC State, A&T, and stay or many move down.

The east half of the state is mostly know-it-all douchebag liberals.  Safer, yes...but its pretty gay.  Charlotte has everything.  You can live in the hood, the university area, downtown (which is slightly gay), or in white suburbia.  If you pull six figures as a household you can live in a great neighborhood with very convenient shopping and food, and tons of hot soccer moms.  If not (like me), you can live in a nice neighborhood 10-15 miles from downtown and still have everything you need close by.  I love it here, and I've lived in d.c., Maryland, no. Virginia, jacksonville, west palm beach, Houston, and Indiana....charlotte is the best by far.

Two things you will notice: Pace of life slows down (like everything in the south)
and...There are too many damn pine trees!

Things you didn't know: they reintroduced the Red Wolf back in the early 90s. And Black Beard the pirate's ship apparently ran aground on the NC Coast, there was a huge great white shark spotted off the coast, and the outer banks has tons of sharks teeth...

Women are beyond fantastic and everyone seems friendly. One thing that I have noticed is that everyone has phony manners. They could hate your guts but you could never tell by the way they speak to you. At least in the NYC area if someone doesn't like you they will tell you to your face repeatedly so you know where you stand. In the south they will kick you while your on the ground and call you sir as they try to kill you.

What is the local economy like; esp for you guys who have lived in different parts of NC - how do they compare?

Is there a strong health care industry?

Buddy of mine moved to Cary, NC and loves it.   Said he will never step foot in NYS ever again.

My assistant moved down there a few years ago and works from home via computer network we set up.

Property values though have crashed in a lot of areas, so you can probably get a good deal.

John Deere?

Works for an accounting firm.

He got out of NYC at the right time.

Me?  I went down there for the NHL Allstar game last year and it was real nice, but damn those fuckers are slow.   I also have a thick Bronx NY accent so it was a little strange speaking with the folks down there.

But everyone was nice.  Saw a lot of "Gospel Busses" and packed Denny's though with those fuckers in for the grand slams.

I couldn't disagree with 333386's politics more but his opinion of NC seems spot on.  I'm originally from the Bay Area (Alameda), CA but have been living in Raleigh (Cary, actually) the last 3 years and Raleigh is boring, boring, boring.
Off the top of my head, here are some annoying things about living here?
- No luck finding a gym that closes later than 10pm.  (The shitty Anytime Fitness doesn't count -- My high school gym was better equipped.)
- Holy fuck am I tired of strangers waving hello to me.
- Also, I'm sick of seeing so many white people.  Reminds me of when I was stationed in Germany -- except Germans seem a lot more intelligent.
I could continue this rant for a while but I'll stop here.

Huh?  Here in Raleigh you are THE center of college basketball.  UNC, Duke and NC State within a rocks throw of each other.  Charlotte has the worst team in the history of the NBA.

Having lived in every part of NC, except the coast, I think Raleigh is a much, much better area.  Just as much to do without all the headaches of Charlotte.  Wake county schools kinda suck, they are constantly in an uproar.  If you want to "feel right at home" and "do things the way they did back home" either stay where you are or move to Cary.  It's about the same thing.  ;D

Wow I'm also moving to Raleigh, or Charlotte by winter. I was just down there last week looking at houses. Holy shit! You can buy a perfect house for 100k in either city that would cost 300k in NY. Plus it seems the taxes are a quarter of the price as well. We started looking at houses in my price range and I was like wait, I dont need a 4 or 5 bedroom lol. I'm leaning towards Charlotte because its close to the mountains that I would use a lot of, and I can still get to the beach. However I hear bad things about the airport there and since I fly for a living thats a major factor.

Anyone know if the Raleigh airport is better then Charlotte?

Well, it's the South, what did you expect, loudmouth Northerners who think they know everything, yet are the most unhappiest?

It's not that things are boring, the pace of life is slower---it allows you time to enjoy the things that matter, like family, friends, the environment.
Many times people used to a fast pace of life don't realize, that you are going nowhere fast. Take time to enjoy the little things in life...You ain't Russian, so why you rushin'?

I couldn't agree more.  Yankees flooding in here from Ohio, New York et al. aren't doing the state a LICK of a favor.  I tell them, "Why don't you stay where you come from and fix your home state instead of coming down here and bitching about how we do things?"

Oh, and Kh300:  think twice before you assume the Carolinas are full of a bunch of "hicks" or that we're hard to understand.  Even the NASCAR-type plebs are easier to follow than some nasally-assed northern Wisconsonian or Boston prick who needs to gwoah paaaaaaaahk daaaah caaaaah :D

I'm also soooo not worried about a Yankee stealing our women.  We have dentists and showers here, peckerhead :)  Given the choice between an educated Southern gentleman with some cash in his wallet and a rich, loud-mouthed Yankee, GRITS will remain faithful to their roots.

But don't worry.  You can go home and jerk off to Frances McDormand in your worn out "Fargo" tape anytime :D

Just as newscasters and talking heads around the rest of the nation have no real accents.  They're trained to speak "broadcast English."

I'm only kidding dude. But a lot of people couldn't speak 'a lick' of english. The real estate agent I could understand and the lawyer. Both from NC. But the rental car guy and some people on the streets, I literally couldn't understand. Trust me I'd rather be around hicks then the monkeys up here. I couldn't believe how nice people were and seeing motorcycles parked outside. Different world it will be.

My mistake, Kh300 ;)

Welcome.  The state isn't perfect, but it does have its charms.  Personally, I'm just pissed that my families all settled near Charlotte.  It's too hot and humid around here.  The mountains would be infinitely better, especially when I'm on tren :D

Just as newscasters and talking heads around the rest of the nation have no real accents.  They're trained to speak "broadcast English."

No knock on you, of course, Parker.  Just sayin'.

As everyone in the country should be taught in school...regional dialects are speech impediments

The more of you dumbasses that migrate here, the more the prices are going to go up.  I say stay away.  Seriously.  You carpetbaggers fucking ruin everything.

Now now Adonis.....let the Yankee's come past the Mason-Dixon and live here.  We can always train them in the ways of Southern Hospitality.

Anyone know if the Raleigh airport is better then Charlotte?

RDU is one of the easiest airports ever.

I visited my best friend in Charlotte about 6 months ago. His job had moved him there and he lived in this area called "The Metropolitan". It was a very trendy and cool place to live with literally a few cools spots to hangout at directly across the street. Some of the places I remember were "Pisces, La Paz, Hickory Tavern" etc. Also either connected to his building or just one block over were grocery stores, cleaners etc..so he didn't need a car. If you're moving out to Charlotte it's worth looking into.

Sorry we just voted the amendment in place so that you don't feel welcome here.  Perhaps Vermont is more to your liking?

Nope, quite content where I am, thanks.  ;)

I always have fun on vacation in South Carolina. All jokes aside the poverty in both North and South Carolina is incredible in so many places. The houses are cheap and the real estate tax is next to nothing. I pay 8K a year on property taxes and a coworker pays 17K a year on his house. Car insurance here in for two cars is close to 3K for full good coverage and down south it's next to nothing. My full health care insurance in NJ cost 10K and in the south the same coverage is next to nothing.

If I had to pick it would be Raleigh. I'm not an expert and have only been to both places a handful of times on business. I wouldn't go as far to say either of these places had many rednecks and country people with southern accents.
