As part of my pledge to being a more accepting person (specifically of my own kind - weird, I know lol), I wanted to wish the GETBIG Muslims... BigBobs, A_Ahmed, Repping20, KSA_Triceps - and anyone else I missed....a VERY happy Ramadan.
You all know I won't be participating due to my own personal beliefs and qualms.... But when I did fast regularly many years ago, it was truly a tough endeavor and a great show of will, determination, and faith.... So I wish you all the very best as you embark on this sacred month.... may it bring you the peace that you are searching for.

As a child when I was still practicing and was taught about Islam in school and from family, etc. I did learn that a muslim woman cannot marry a non-muslim man (But the other way was permissible)...
Do I PERSONALLY believe that? NO.... but then again I don't believe..... well.... 100% of that or any other religion for that matter.
So I guess - Psychopath is right in that, yes people are taught in Islam (at least I was taught) that non-muslim men cannot marry Muslim women, its a a means to make sure the religion continues to live on. Is this actually written in the Koran - I really don't know, I did not read the whole book, merely excerpts. Maybe it is, maybe it is not.
Is he right about everything else? about my life? how my kids will be raised, Etc? how family views me, us, whatever? etc etc etc... no he couldn't' be more wrong, for a lot of reasons.... but sadly for him... I'm not going into those details. Because these are matters I consider to be private and choose to keep off these boards?
But I will add - that we don't live in the stone age here... my entire family, my wife, my wife's family, etc....we are all open minded people.

Ach is one of the assets to getbig. He's intelligent enough to shake free of the shackles of religion and think for himself. He's one of the few getbiggers who doesnt get all riled up and even laughs it off whenever a few barbs are thrown his way. Anyone who shows that level of maturity is all right regardless of his ethnicity or background. He's not your typical uneducated arrogant muslim..hell...he stepped away from Islam.

That fact that it happens doesn't necceaarrily means that its not against the rules.

Good post Ach. I have researched this as well since I'm an atheist who has dated a Muslim. You are right that people are taught that they can't marry but it's just one of many things that people don't follow 100% especially in western countries. Technically Muslims aren't even allowed to date right?

I fast once a year for 7 days straight - Muslims have it relatively easy at Ramadamadingdong.

There are Muslims who have chosen to adapt and assimilate into Modern Western Culture, and those who have chosen to be stuck in the stone ages.
I'm not going to get into a debate whether original scripture goes against western values or not because 1. I'm not educated enough on the subject, and 2. I think its hard for Anyone of ANY faith to really accept modern society yet follow their faith word for word (not saying its impossible - just saying its hard because of the way modern society is today)
An example I used earlier is pre-marital sex. I think we can pretty much agree that this is considered a sin Across any and all faiths.... yet we see many people participating in the act regularly but still going around stating that they are a believer of "____" religion (fill in the blank).
I'm not gonna go on a rant here to defend the faith - because...... well.... I'm a pretty awful example of the faith (since I don't practice or believe myself) and I have in the past been pretty outspoken against certain actions and behaviors, I've been even disrespectful towards certain members of this board due to their faith, and I've admitted and accepted that I was wrong... this doesn't change how I choose to live my life.... But I am of the opinion, I don't really care what anyone's faith is, you can be muslim, christian, jewish, Buddist, hindu, agnostic, athiest, whatever (And I have friends who fall in all those categories) .... we'll get along fine as long as you are 1. respectful, and 2. don't try to push your belief onto me.

Not gonna get in a debate about it.... but one thing that he hit right on point, was the ridiculous debates certain "scholars" have gotten into about interpreting the Koran.... I once watched a horrendous video of a Muslim scholar say "for a man and a woman to be able to work together in the same office, that the woman would have to breast feed the man, so it would not be a sin for them to be together" - This is one example that is very extreme and incredibly stupid, but there have been debates about more minute details (I'm sure in other relgions too)....
A very famous author said that many muslim scholars decipher the Koran wrong and this is why there is a problem with the religion today, he then went on to say that the relgion talks about science, about math, about biology, about geography, about physics, etc and he said that its is wrong for these "Relgious scholars" to be the ones to interpret the book.... so he hired scientists, biologists, etc etc etc to decipher certain sections of the book, and with his findings he released a book that "explains the Koran" from their perspectives.... my dad got the book and he said in his eyes it was the best interpretation of the Koran, Much much much much better than the interpretations of many Muslim "clerics" and "scholars" who were just spewing bullshit about what they believe is right - the name of this book is in Arabic translated to: "The Koran and the Book" - sadly not too long after it was published, the book was declared a defamation of the religion, it was banned in many muslim countries, and a warrant was out for this man's arrest.... even though the book was not meant to insult the religion, but it was another way to explain it and decipher it..... but muslim "clerics" were not happy about it and acted on it.
Thats something I've been so confused about regarding religion (ANY religion) if this is the word of god - WHY IS THERE SO MUCH AMBIGUITY.... why do people still debate the meanings of certain things.... if this is the almighty and all powerful god, then he should be able to explain things STRAIGHT TO THE POINT!

I'm of the belief that Religion should have NOTHING to do with government..... But that is not the case now in a country like Egypt. (Many countries actually) But people are free to practice whatever religion they want. There are some people that will be extreme in their beliefs and some that will be moderate. But this should have nothing to do with the rule of law.

Everyone needs to find their own way not follow a set of rules imposed by a religion or culture. I think we've evolved to a point where the human race is gradually breaking free of those self imposed constraints. Thats what pisses off religious leaders. They're losing control. Thats why Islam demonizes anyone who breaks free - the fear that more people will follow. The exodus is inevitable and has already begun.
I've travelled extensively worldwide and at the end of the day people are people. It's religion, culture and politics that build walls between people and creates hate ignorance and suspicion.
