I predict this cult-fad will be gone with in three years especially with "Obamacare". LOL!  So popular, people are catching on to it's stupidity. (There's an Obama joke in there someplace but this is neither the time nor the place)

coach, i have to ask you honestly: have you ever truly looked into what crossfit is, or are you just finding the occasional article that reaffirms your preconceptions about it and mindlessly bleating them?

after all, there are SCADS of olympic lifters who, only the olympic PLATFORM, lost balance and dropped a bar on their head. here's one from the 2012 olympic games.

what you're doing is the equivalent of me showing a video of that kid getting stuck under a bench and calling for his mom and going "LOL BODYBUILDING IS STUPID" or, in the case of this particular video, showing a picture of a bodybuilder with a torn muscle and going "SEE BODYBUILDING IS DANGEROUS".

for someone who ostensibly coaches people for a living, your rigor and honesty in examining forms of exercise is... troubling.

Crossfit is stupid and medically dangerous, you just defend it because you are part of it. Modern day bodybuilding is stupid too but at its core Bodybuilding is a practice that has existed since ancient greece and has millenia of science to back it. The drugs came into the picture later on. Crossfit is basically the Zumba of weight lifting, pointless and dangerous work outs aimed to appease the ego and the wallets of the traines who run crossfit gyms. I actually spent time reading and researching cross fit and I rarely ever make up my mind without research. Crossfit is retarded.

Medically dangerous....LOL.   Here we go again with some rhabdo bullshit drone.

Please tell us about this "research" rooster.   ::)  Bodybuilding (oh wait, 'modern bodybuilding') is aimed to appease the ego of those who do it, the wallets of the gym owners, gurus, trainers, supplement companies, magazine owners, drug dealers, drug manufacturers, etc, etc, etc

Dangerous workouts...really?  Are people dropping dead from them?  RUN TO THE HILLS!!!!!  Here comes a CF conditioning workout!!!

Love how you so easily dismiss the drug use in bodybuilding so quickly.  Have you researched WSM as well?  Ever look into that Rosie?

Don't worry...Joe will come back with some of his vague rhetoric.

25lbs? That says a lot. It says inexperience and knows NOTHING about the progressions of strength training. Who made the decision to make that jump, her or her "coach"?

Yep Joe....in no other "lifting" sport/activity/recreation do we have people doing this.  There you go again with your whole "progressions of strength training" answer.  Why is it you glossed over Magoo's post?  When people fail on the platform like he posted...is that from inexeperience?  When someone tears a pec or injures their shoulder in a bench press meet, is that from inexperience or bad coaching?  I have said it a thousand time, you have a complete hard on for bashing.  You did it in the first post then denied it.  Are you going to again compare coaching to neurosurgery soon?

So...you admit Rhabdo is a real thing...one can easily tell the horrible form and stupid amount of reps cross fitters use and yet you still want more "research" ? you are nothing but shheep I guess crossfit gives your life meaning, you are not mature enough to question your own beliefs?

Form would have nothing to due with rhabadomyolysis. Water intoxication exists, saying such does not nullify drinking large amounts of water. You are making a false equvilency. At what point does RM start? how many reps? is it the rest? how bad is it?

I would argue that it's hard to induce and the symptoms of it would prevent further exercise. It can happen, but I would imagine you would almost have to try to induce it against the feeling of being very unwell and tired. To get to IV, Disseminated intravascular coagulation and kidney failure you would have to be some form of OCD mixed with  amy winehouse and a dash of that inbred kid who plays the fiddle in deliverance.

I have yet to see it in practice or in anyone I know.

Defend this. What is "medically dangerous" About it in ways that other forms of exercise aren't? Really, explain. Keep in mind the number of high school football players who died on the field from heat stroke or ended up with massive dehydration (I actually had a urine infection in 10th grade because the coach ran us so hard I got dehydrated to the point where my urine crystallized inside me).

If you're going to go after bad coaching, that's not an issue with the protocol then. That's an issue with bad coaches. I follow Brandon Lilley's Cube Method currently for Crossfit. Here's a workout. Please, pray tell, what's dangerous about this workout:

Squat cleans:
- work up to 80% 2x5 sets

- EMOM 315x3 deadlift, remainder of the first 30sec max air squats, rest 30 seconds. Rounds until 100 squats

- GHD setups 4x10

- Reverse hyperextensions - 3x15

Yep. Looks terrible.

Yes, and fairly extensively. The problem is there is no true definition of how they even define what "crossfit" at least that makes sense. We are sandwiched between two crossfit outfits both with in 200 yards of each other. But that's besides the point. There is nothing in what I'm going to say now that I have not said MANY times on here before. So I'm going to say this one more time......it's not the lifts, the rep and recovery of the lifts (O-lifts). The girl in the video seemed to have decent form until she lost it. Why did she lose it? According to the article it was 1. She has only been training for 1-2 years, which isn't a problem BUT 2. She jumped up 25lbs on a technical lift.

Krank likes to make fun of when I call out the lack of progressions but the progressions are everything. We max every week based on what the 1RM is. Example, if I have an athlete that has a 1RM of 315lbs on a squat, the following week is 320-325lbs MAX even if he could do more we don't take beyond that and build from there. Also, programming is more important then the progressions, you can't have one with out the other.

There are little progressions and minimum recovery with high CNS exercises with crossfit which is why the higher injury rate. Just to add a note, comparing crossfit to WSM is an absolutely absurd comparison. They know the risk involved even though the training is sound.

Agree with everything Coach has said. It's a stupid Cult, and like a lot of things point out a few things that to them make no sense in bodybuilding to say why their training system is better. When what they point out is just bullshit anyway, exaggerated to say why they are better.

With you, as with many, there is an "Obama joke" just about everywhere.   Not everyone feels that way, though.  But fortunately for them, you are yourself a far funnier joke than Obama will ever be.

There are little progressions and minimum recovery with high CNS exercises with crossfit which is why the higher injury rate. Just to add a note, comparing crossfit to WSM is an absolutely absurd comparison. They know the risk involved even though the training is sound.

So what is the definition of "worlds strongest man"?  What was the point of mentioning that you are sandwiched between two CF places?  Its about as relevant as a steak joint being sandwhiched between two italian restaurants.

The reps and the recovery of the lifts.  Ohhhhh.  So you have the magic number that allows athletes to not get injured or overtrain?  How come you don't keep pulling of stupid bodybuilding videos or workouts where they expose 100 rep sets of squats, deads, leg press, etc.  Where articles talking about resting 30 seconds in between sets for maximal growth?  Yes, she made a stupid jump in weight.  No one in a powerlifting competition ever made a stupid jump like that?  Is that what you are trying to say Joe?  PLEASE PLEASE tell me that you're not that dense.

Yes, I am making fun of you Joe.  Your "progression" thing is so damn relative.  Its a fucking buzz word with you.  Its like saying "just cut calories".  Easy to say, but there is no definitive amount.  There never is.  I love the generalized approach you take to the training with CF.  I will say this again, you take a FEW examples and then say everyone is doing that.  Again, please tell me you arent that dense.  Yes I will compare WSM to CF.  Have you ever taken a look at some of the events they have in the WSM???  You want to talk about very little rest time and often at high rep lifting???  So many of their events mimic olympic lifts.  Here is an example...

Overhead Log Lift

Competing singly,  athletes will lift a wooden log from the ground then raise it overhead as many times as possible in the time limit; returning the weight back to the floor in a controlled fashion before attempting to do the next lift.

The winner will be the one who completes as many lifts as possible within the time limit.

Weights: 115kg – Time limit: 75 seconds

Wait a sec.....wait a sec....isn't that similar to something.  I know it.....hmmm....oh yes....THE CLEAN AND JERK (in this case a power clean and power jerk).  250lb+ log lifted as many times as posible in 75 seconds.  I know exactly what you are going to say "But the CF workouts last so much longer".  1) The weights arent that heavy and 2) more often than not there is something in between the lift (opposite movement)

With the concussions and main fighters speaking out against fighting anymore in the UFC, are MMA day's numbered? When someone does die in the ring, will States refuse to let MMA cage fighting come to their towns? And if so, will amature MMA type gyms resort to Crossfit? Dana use to be an aerobics instructor. Maybe after the lawsuits start coming in MMA and it's shut down, Dana will go take over Crossfit and go back to his roots...

Crossfit is a grueling workout but has dangerous aspects to it and once you're past your mid 30's the body doesn't heal the way it once did. NOT the best way to go.

As this fad gets more popular and older people start getting into it, the injuries will mount up.  Crossfit will probably go the way of the gravity boot, Cybergenics workouts and step class.

And rightly so.

What about the "log lift"? Do you mean the "log press"?

coach, i really WANT to respect you for what you've done over the years and for how much passion you obviously have, but you make it really fuckin hard.

what you repeatedly do is sift through as much as you possibly can to find the videos of CFers either having accidents or just messing around and use that as "evidence" that the whole thing is terrible, while completely glossing over every equally bad video of powerlifter, weightlifters, bodybuilders and the like.

so you know what? i'm gonna leave this here.

that's glenn pendlay. you may know him as a man who's forgotten more about weightlifting than you've exaggerated that you know. he's rather up on crossfit. you, on the other hand, are an angry little man who seems to make initial judgment about things and then will not let any new information sway your opinion (which, frankly, explains your politics).

so continue on hating on crossfit. you know what's a lot better than crossfit? filling your body with drugs so you can look good shaved, oiled, and in a thong in front of cheering men. mmmmmmm-hm. much better.

What reason would that be?
Title: Re: More Crossfit Brilliance
Post by: MisterMagoo on November 29, 2013, 03:35:33 PM
What reason would that be?

efficiency of movement and that judging it "strict" would be damn near impossible because you'd have to have a guy sitting there judging on shades of grey. in the olympics they had to transition to the jerk because strict OHP became difficult to judge thanks to guys using minor hip movement or leaning back to extreme angles.

similarly, with pullups, if you can do them VERY fast, your body is simply going to have some horizontal movement. hop on a pullup bar, start from a dead hang, pull as hard as you can as fast as you can with zero kip or swing. you're gonna have motion. so it would fuck up the "speed" element of the whole thing if they had to be super careful and lower gradually to avoid any kind of "swing" that would be interpreted as "cheating."

it's also like strongman. judges in a strongman competition don't give a shit if you hitch a deadlift or use your legs during presses. as long as you get the bar from ground to lockout or from your shoulders to lockout overhead it's a completed lift. in crossfit, if you get your chin over the bar it's a pullup. do whatever you want to get it up there. pissing and moaning that it doesn't work the "lats" is like whining that olympic jerks don't hit the deltoids.

Good answer man, makes sense.

crossfit's just one of those things that is a damn solid protocol but HQ is trying to make money off of it so they're basically selling coaching certs for $1500 and not requiring people to be any good.

if you look at how guys like scott panchik and rich froning train, it's basically high-intensity strongman. or hell, rob orlando runs a website called StrongmanWOD that's a lot of atlas stones and farmer's walks and shit like that.

what's absurd is when people point at the silly pictures out there of guys doing a pistol standing on a kettlebell or handstand pushups on medicine balls or something and acting like that's the program. that's people messing around. it'd be like using that pic of Glenn Ross holding a guy over his head and going "STRONGMAN IS STUPID WHY WOULD YOU HAVE THIS EXERCISE".

you wanna see crossfit? here.

Exactly.  Homos and soccer moms trying to prop up their self esteem pretending to be Navy SEALS.  As Cockenstein says, there are idiot bodybuilders that wear shirts with dumb sayings on them too.  The difference is that this ego driven nonsense permeates throughout Crossfit.  It's embedded in the culture from the top to the very bottom.   Weird and sad.

dude, i have been in lots of gyms all over the place and i see shit like that in all of them. i should take pictures of the one i'm at now (which is a USAPL gym with record holders), they have lots of wacky phrases on the walls. plus i've been in loads of smaller privately-owned gyms that get those animal pak ads.

no, it's not about being butthurt, it's about no one ever saying anything BUT the nonsense and flaming. criticism is fine. ignorant flaming is aggravating, especially when the criticisms are baseless.

Words plastered all over your gym represent what you are about.  I would not train at a place that did that.  Anyone who does is deserving of mockery.  It's not ignorant and baseless criticism either.  It's criticism based on photos like the one above.  You have your standard bullshit like "pain is weakness leaving the body" and such but the above photo goes way beyond normal idiocy.  That is full retard.

Understand it's not one person or one gym slogan that rubs people the wrong way.  It's the entire Crossfit culture that breeds this shit.

but is that in any way unique to crossfit? my high school gym had stuff everywhere, too. are you gonna tell me high school football is horrible? come on, use your head.

P4W, i'm not arguing that crossfit culture sucks. i'm not. i'm usually in CF communities complaining about the hivemind, and i emphatically will not use a CF box for that very reason. but that doesn't mean crossfit as an exercise protocol is terrible. it just means that, right now, it's got a lot of idiots in it.

but think about this, too: CF gets people interested in deadlifts, squats, pullups, and olympic lifts. sure, you can say it's done wrong, but they're still into that. it's a fitness program that says "this is hard, and that's not a bad thing". it's the first "fad" fitness that doesn't tell people "in just three days a week, only 15 minutes a day, it's easy!" it gets people into hard work for exercise. how is that bad?

i crossfit using Brandon Lilly's Cube Method (you may know him as a powerlifter on the Juggernaut team with Chad Smith), at a USAPL gym. i identify as crossfit but i'm not part of a crossfit club and i don't wear WODKILLA shirts or anything. all i'm asking is for people to realize that you can't make sweeping statements about a vague concept like "multi-dimensional athletics training" based on a few little anecdotes.

plus, c'mon. it's a girl with no belt pulling 295. who gives a shit what's on the wall, that's good work.

EDIT: and look a few threads above this one about the synthol idiot. using the worst CF pics and videos to claim CF is awful is like looking at that guy and saying it's proof bodybuilding is retarded.

So what is the definition of "worlds strongest man"?  What was the point of mentioning that you are sandwiched between two CF places?  Its about as relevant as a steak joint being sandwhiched between two italian restaurants.

You're right, it's not relevant. Just pointing it out.

1. Yes, there is an approximate number. Reps and recovery go hand in hand what the energy systems dictate (ATP/CP /Glycolitic /Aerobic 2. In a REAL Strength and Conditioning protocol, the indicator lifts (O-lifts, Bench, Squat, DL) are done first in the lifting part of the program FIRST and usually by themselves simply because they are the lifts that will wake up the CNS and at the same time stay within the ATP/CP (1-5 reps -2-4min recovery). If I decide to add other exercises in addition to the indicator lift (example would be Squat, Chin, core exercise) there would be a 2min recovery. Why? Because if I'm stupid enough to program AMRAP for time, you can bet mechanics would break down and lead to an injury.

Very good point but this is the thing, in strongman there is an expectation of injury and true strongman training isn't done with newbe exercisers when they first walk into the gym....like crossfit. Why in the hell would I have someone do an OH press if they have a history of shoulder problems??

coach, i really WANT to respect you for what you've done over the years and for how much passion you obviously have, but you make it really fuckin hard.

what you repeatedly do is sift through as much as you possibly can to find the videos of CFers either having accidents or just messing around and use that as "evidence" that the whole thing is terrible, while completely glossing over every equally bad video of powerlifter, weightlifters, bodybuilders and the like.

so you know what? i'm gonna leave this here.

that's glenn pendlay. you may know him as a man who's forgotten more about weightlifting than you've exaggerated that you know. he's rather up on crossfit. you, on the other hand, are an angry little man who seems to make initial judgment about things and then will not let any new information sway your opinion (which, frankly, explains your politics).

so continue on hating on crossfit. you know what's a lot better than crossfit? filling your body with drugs so you can look good shaved, oiled, and in a thong in front of cheering men. mmmmmmm-hm. much better.

I'm not going to get into who knows more, but after 40 years of this, I do know a few things along with the thousands of dollars I put out each year to make sure I keep up. I'm not going to disagree with anything he said, he's right on all of it. BUT THAT WAS NOT MY POINT!!

Yes you were just pointing it out.  Doesn't make it any more irrelevant.  Just like when you brought up how you "crushed" the CF guys at a meet.  Who the fuck cares.  They talked shit and got beat.  Like no athlete you ever coached talked shit.  guy please

Exactly...an approximate number.  Something no one knows exactly.  I would imagine there are guys who don't have a great 1-rm but can bang the shit out of reps.  You can toss out energy systems all you like.  But thats not the answer to what I asked.  An athlete can get injured on the 1st or the 10th rep.  Is it the energy system that failed causing it?  Doubtful.

For your information Joe, the best of the CF coaching used that protocol.  If you look at my log, you will see that stuff.  Olympic first, then Strength, then my conditioning.  So, am I not doing things right?  Know who Diane Fu is?  She likes to program EMOM in her olympic lifts.  Care to go up against her in Olympic lifting experience?  I would hope not.  I love how you spew out the recovery cycle for all these energy systems.  So, when you train a football player....do you tell them that they must take a "2 min recovery from maximal effort" between plays so that they don't get injured?  Christ on a cracker...CF stuff isn't doing 90%+ maximal efforts exercise after exercise.  Have we not pointed out this at least a million times??  You just are too obtuse to accept it.  Love the little terms "indicator lift" to sound more technical than it is.

Do you think its the fault of CF or someone who THINKS they are a good coach that has people do shit from day #1 that they shouldn't.  Show me ANYWHERE that CF says to put someone under a weighted bar their first day in the gym.  Let me save you some time....there isn't.  Just like someone walking into a gym and thinking they know the mechanics of a squat and they start loading up a bar for some good ol' fashion 1/4 rep low back busters.  Speaking of which...maybe this would be a good time to break out some videos of Branch Warrens form or Johnny Jacksons form on exercises.  Talk about poor execution and injury.  How many newbie trainees copy/emulate them and get hurt because they think thats the way to do things.??

Regarding there is an expectation of injury in WSM....please point out anywhere that will back that claim up.  If that truly is the case, why aren't you bashing it?  A competition where you purposely do it with an expectation of getting injured by something OTHER than an opponent.  Wow.  Doesn't sound retarded at all.

I am with Magoo on this.  There are complete fucktards in CF.  Guess what?  They are present in all areas.  The trainers who have their clients doing shit they have no business doing.  A friend of mine is a trainer at Lifetime fitness and his manager said that unless his clients aren't loud and drawing attention to them, the trainer isn't doing their job.  Wow....really??  I walked away from the whole BBing thing after almost 25yrs.  Had my fill of the retardedness of it all.

What goes on in normal gyms?  Yes..there are loads of times you will see idiots get stuck under benches, load up leg presses with far too much weight, get under squat bars with far too much weight, and deadlift with horrendous form just to name a few.  Normal coaches?  Really?  So, you make sure you point out the 'good' coaches but neglect to recognize the completely shitty ones.  Yet, its ok to point out the examples of people who think they know that they are doing with CF as the gold standard to what goes on normally.  Ahhhhh.  Well, I guess there is no arguing with you on that one.

The criticism of CF is deserved in certain examples.  We aren't disputing that.  Magoo showed one clip of the platform fail.  Did that guy have bad coaching?
