Dear Kanye West,
I am honored to be writing such an important star. I am a mere Internet sensation. I’m not sure I am worthy to address you, although the Huffington Post did say I was “Humorous and Insanely Popular.” I don’t pay much attention to those things. Anyway, please excuse my interference in your life for a quick second.
I read your interview and also watched it on video. You said:
“I’m just giving of my body on the stage and putting my life at risk, literally.….and I think about it. I think about my family and I’m like, wow, this is like being a police officer or something, in war or something.”
I want to thank you for putting your life on the line for all of us every day. I know that being a rapper is tough work. I have tried to rap, and it is very difficult to keep up with the pulse of the rhyme flow…although when Ice Ice Baby comes on the radio, I can usually keep up with ol’ Vanilla. Anywho, your job is just some very dangerous work. Most people don’t consider… if you rap really fast, without a chance to inhale, you could pass out and hit your head.
That last paragraph was covered in sarcasm. I’m letting you know, just so you do not think I agree with your very ignorant assessment of your career (or any other performer)as it relates to a person in the military or a police officer’s service. You sir, are as misguided as they come. I do have a suggestion for you. Since you are accustomed to danger, from your life as an international rapper, I am strongly encouraging you immediately abandon you career as a super star and join the military. After joining, I would like you to volunteer to be deployed in Afghanistan or one of the numerous other forward locations where our men an women are currently serving. When the Taliban starts shooting at you, perhaps you could stand up and let the words flow. It could be something like “I’m Kanye West, wearing a flak vest.” I’m sure they would just drop weapons and surrender. You could quite possibly end all wars, just from the enemy being star-struck.
Your line of thinking is part of the problem in the world today….which include entertainers thinking they are something more than just entertainers. I know it is supply and demand and the demand for your services is high. I get economics. What I do not get is you EVER comparing what you do for a living to our heroic military members, who are always in harm’s way… and my brother and sister police officers who have to go to work carrying weapons and wearing a bullet-proof vest to protect themselves.

I have had to deal with deranged imbeciles just while being out in public many times, sometimes they have had weapons, and I never had the luxury of an arsenal of lethal weapons and the full weight of the law behind me. Police would love to have you believe that their job is so dangerous and they are heroic blah, blah, blah, but the fact is, the chances of a police officer dying whilst at work are far less than many other professions.
And it's not random risk, the risk is based on real life fatalities. Being heavily lethally armed and being legally entitled to use lethal force if need be while dealing with a crazy person with some box cutters hardly represents a risk.

I'm not a big fan of police officials commenting publicly on entertainers and pointing out how dangerous the job is... Get over it. The very reasons that make policing dangerous are more than likely the very same reason cops were drawn to it in the first place. So pointing out the danger is kind of self serving. Well, the rancher deals with multi-ton animals without a gun, where he has to often stay on the range to run them and live away from modern conveniences for days and weeks at a time, so yeah... he may have you there.

Cops and Soldiers aren't doing the most dangerous jobs. Hope this helps. But we all know the insecure types attracted to those types of jobs want everyone to believe that they are constantly putting themselves in danger. I am constantly amazed how insecure such people are. This holding up of an illusion, all because they are so deeply insecure they want others to appreciate their faux heroic efforts. We get it, such people need others to believe their job is dangerous even when it's not really in order to feel good about themselves. Sad and pathetic.

Airline Pilots were at the top of this list a few years ago and I used to ask myself what make this job so dangerous, but after learning so much about piloting, I change my mind.... :)

Like clockwork, after the release of the census, a handful of reporters will write a story highlighting the fact that police officers are not at the top of the list.
The underlying implication is that, because criminal justice careers aren't first on the list, perhaps law enforcement officers are not entitled to the enhanced pensions or health benefits they often receive. That is a debate for another time and another place.
Occupational Fatality Rate
A look at the data, though, is certainly worth a discussion. The truth of the matter is, no matter where the occupation ranks on the census, law enforcement careers remain dangerous. In fact, following a historic low of line-of-duty deaths in 2009, on-the-job fatalities for law enforcement officers are again on the upswing.
The Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries is a great source of information, but like all statistics, it's the interpretation of the data that matters. The census produces a "fatality rate," detailing the number of individuals fatally injured per 100,000 workers. It also provides a raw number of fatal on-the-job injuries. Making the top 10 most dangerous jobs for 2010, the most recent year for which data is available, are:
1.Fishers and related fishing workers, at a rate of 116 deaths per 100,000
2.Logging workers, at a rate of 91 deaths per 100,000
3.Aircraft pilots and flight engineers, at a rate of 71 deaths per 100,000
4.Farmers and ranchers, at a rate of 41 deaths per 100,000
5.Mining machine operators, at a rate of 38 deaths per 100,000
6.Roofers, at a rate of 32 deaths per 100,000
7.Refuse and recyclable material collectors, at a rate of 29 deaths per 100,000
8.Drivers / sales workers and truck drivers, at a rate of 21 deaths per 100,000
9.Industrial machinery repair and installation, at a rate of 20 per 100,000
10.Police and sheriff's patrol officers, at a rate of 19 per 100,000
A cursory glance at the rate of fatal injuries looks pretty staggering at first blush, especially for the top-rated professions of fishers, loggers and flight crews. The problem with basing a presupposition entirely on such a rate is that the data is per capita, meaning that in smaller industries the numbers can become easily skewed.
A Numbers Game?
In the case of fishers and related fishing workers, for example, the fatality rate for 2010 was 116 deaths per 100,000 workers. The actual number of deaths in the industry, though, was 29. The same can be said of flight crews, who saw a fatality rate of 70, while the total number of fatalities for the industry was 78. Compare that to the 133 deaths of law enforcement officers in 2010 or the 177 in 2011.
In these occupations, the smaller number of workers greatly affects the fatality rate; one or two accidents can easily send the rate skyrocketing, while the actual raw numbers may be significantly lower. If we were to rank dangerous jobs based on raw numbers as a opposed to rates, the list would look like this:
1.Drivers / sales workers and truck drivers - 683
2.Farmers and ranchers - 300

The underlying implication is that, because criminal justice careers aren't first on the list, perhaps law enforcement officers are not entitled to the enhanced pensions or health benefits they often receive. That is a debate for another time and another place.
Occupational Fatality Rate
A look at the data, though, is certainly worth a discussion. The truth of the matter is, no matter where the occupation ranks on the census, law enforcement careers remain dangerous. In fact, following a historic low of line-of-duty deaths in 2009, on-the-job fatalities for law enforcement officers are again on the upswing.
The Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries is a great source of information, but like all statistics, it's the interpretation of the data that matters. The census produces a "fatality rate," detailing the number of individuals fatally injured per 100,000 workers. It also provides a raw number of fatal on-the-job injuries. Making the top 10 most dangerous jobs for 2010, the most recent year for which data is available, are:
1.Fishers and related fishing workers, at a rate of 116 deaths per 100,000
2.Logging workers, at a rate of 91 deaths per 100,000
3.Aircraft pilots and flight engineers, at a rate of 71 deaths per 100,000
4.Farmers and ranchers, at a rate of 41 deaths per 100,000
5.Mining machine operators, at a rate of 38 deaths per 100,000
6.Roofers, at a rate of 32 deaths per 100,000
7.Refuse and recyclable material collectors, at a rate of 29 deaths per 100,000
8.Drivers / sales workers and truck drivers, at a rate of 21 deaths per 100,000
9.Industrial machinery repair and installation, at a rate of 20 per 100,000

A cursory glance at the rate of fatal injuries looks pretty staggering at first blush, especially for the top-rated professions of fishers, loggers and flight crews. The problem with basing a presupposition entirely on such a rate is that the data is per capita, meaning that in smaller industries the numbers can become easily skewed.
A Numbers Game?
In the case of fishers and related fishing workers, for example, the fatality rate for 2010 was 116 deaths per 100,000 workers. The actual number of deaths in the industry, though, was 29. The same can be said of flight crews, who saw a fatality rate of 70, while the total number of fatalities for the industry was 78. Compare that to the 133 deaths of law enforcement officers in 2010 or the 177 in 2011.
In these occupations, the smaller number of workers greatly affects the fatality rate; one or two accidents can easily send the rate skyrocketing, while the actual raw numbers may be significantly lower. If we were to rank dangerous jobs based on raw numbers as a opposed to rates, the list would look like this:

I have cop friends... Good guys. Unfortunately, having those friends also means that I have seen the bad cop element.
I also take issue with the fact that cops are so quick to take away civil liberties. That's probably my biggest issue. I don't appreciate the way most cops are so nonchalant about taking people's freedoms. Especially since I was fortunate enough to be born and raised in a country that prides itself on the "perception" of allowing those freedoms over all else.
To find a cop that appreciates what their job allows and uses it with discretion is very difficult to find it seems.

I have to chime in on this thread....4 close family members (1 my brother) have been in the major wars (world 2, Gulf War, and Afghan) i will agree with you that SOME soldiers dont have dangerous jobs as they are not in direct line of fire. However another term comes to mind here with the biggest difference between soldiers and Kanye. American soldiers aren't brave nor do they have much Balls. They are pretty fucking stupid though, especially considering how easily they will be shipped off to fight in illegal wars. For pilots it’s 70 kills per 100,000. Alaskan bush pilots, included in the commercial pilot grouping, have an astounding one-in-eight chance of death over the course of a 30-year career.
Pure statistics never tell the whole story. Thousands of soldiers have died in the past 12 years in Afghanistan+ Iraq, with tens of thousands more being seriously injured i.e.-amputee,wheelchair, burns, and many more effected with PTSD. This seems to be a much more dangerous job than logging or farming. A one in eight chance of dying is crazy though.

Recently, because of the fiscal Irresponsibility of the cities corrupt government,, they have endured pay cuts, benefit cuts, mandatory 10 and 12 hour shifts on straight pay no tome and a half. Thats not to mention court apearances which were also reduced to straight pay. This was after they were already among the lowest paid. For many years they work without a contract because the city wont give them shit. Then it goes to arbitration for several more years. Meanwhile everybody had their hands in their pension fund and now a federal judge has sided with the city that they are not obligated to pay the pension which izs noe precedent for other cities facing bankruptcy.

You also are not an expert in labor relations and what is fair compensation just because you pay taxes.
You don't know what comparative compensation is. The list at the begining of this thread lists dangerous jobs. Many of those jobs have risks and result in alot of accidental death. Climbing a scaffold hundreds of feet has obvious dangers. I think whats obvious here, not to you though, is that in police work a possible risk is being murdered while working, being gunned down or stabbed or beaten to death by an ex-con or some other kind of psycho. No other job has that potential risk associated with it. It is unique to police work that a possibility is that you may be killed violently by another person. The list measured deaths. Since every act of violence does not end in a deth some end in cops being crippled, paralyzed, maimed, disfigured, brain dead but alive...I understand you do not want to accept this because it does not fit into your view of what is fair compensation.
For whatever reason you want to convince yourself and others that police work is a comparatively safe line of work. Maybe it makes you feel safer in your own existence to think that cops just don't face that many dangers because cops deal with society and if a cops work is so dangerous then society is dangerous and admitting that makes you feel less secure in your own day to day existence. Let me tell you something bro, you don't know shit about what cops do or what they deserve to make. And being a tax payer doesn't change that.

Some police departments pay well. I can't speak for LAPD because I don't know what 87K a year gets you in the form of housing and cost of living in L.A. My department pays us well. We have no complaints about the money at this point. Could it be more? Sure.. would love to make more..but it could be less. Lot of citizens are struggling to make ends meet, have gotten layed off in the last 5 yrs or had other financial issues. A police officer here who wants to make 100K can bust their buts with OT and make it. Some departments pay crap.. and that's unfortunate because you often get what you pay for, and training and professionalism suffers. When I tell some people what I make they are generally surprised. It's not like when I started.

Of course they make overtime at court...its a function of their job the is mandatory and goes on outside of their 40 hour work week. If a cop gets subpoenad by court, it is not an option as to wether or not he gos and testifies, hes bound by the court. The court decides if he's needed four an appearance not the officer....That aside court subpoenas are sent with little notice so these guys who are already working power shift or swing shifts HAVE to drop whatever the fuck it is they are doing in the middle of their day or night as the case may ge, often find child care and make a mandatory court appearance under order of a judge. its job related so it is under their contract of they make overtime for it. It doesent matter if it is a traffic ticket or a murder trial the inconvenience and intrusion on their life outside of their regular work hours is compensated as overtime.
I suppose its irrelevant to you that those traffic tickets were actually deserved. In your mind its just a racket to make money. doesn't really matter if the person was actually driving like a maniac. In your mind its just a racket for the cops and traffic citations are bullshit.

Lieutenant and above are salaried. Sergeant and below are hourly
Here it is called "Exempt" and Non Exempt" employees. We all get paid an hourly rate, but Exempt are not eligible to recieve overtime

When I was there I could get paid for every hour I was just on call... Even if I didn't do anything, I got paid.

Things have tightened up over the years, especially since the downturned economy in the last decade. Our on call people get compensated with 8 hrs comp time for a week of being on call. They pay double time and a half for officers who have to work Christmas day. Unti a few years ago you would have people changing their schedule in the back office so they could work Christmas day and get the money. That was a waste of tax payer money and it was stopped. No doubt there are people who will take advantage of the situation in every walk of life

honestly don't know about other places..but my prct. Had over 450 cops in it( yes more than some departments but we had 30,000 cops in the NYPD spread over 75 pcts,and specialized units) can honestly say that I only knew 100% that we had 2 dirty cops. Could there have been more..yes..doubt it..the penalty( jail,losing job,pension) far outweighed the money to be taken off these petty drug dealers(and I was a super active cop who was bribed over 250,000 to let a guy go who I caught with a kilo..took him in recorded the bribe on tape and charged him with that besides the drugs,also caught 2 desperadoes who robbed a drug den and made off with over 650,000 cash money..every cent was vouchered by me and my partner..not a holy roller but taking money/drugs just wasn't my thing!

Could there have been more..yes..doubt it..the penalty( jail,losing job,pension) far outweighed the money to be taken off these petty drug dealers(and I was a super active cop who was bribed over 250,000 to let a guy go who I caught with a kilo..took him in recorded the bribe on tape and charged him with that besides the drugs,also caught 2 desperadoes who robbed a drug den and made off with over 650,000 cash money..every cent was vouchered by me and my partner..not a holy roller but taking money/drugs just wasn't my thing!
That's the kinda shit that ended Serpico. Watch your back.

honestly don't know about other places..but my prct. Had over 450 cops in it( yes more than some departments but we had 30,000 cops in the NYPD spread over 75 pcts,and specialized units) can honestly say that I only knew 100% that we had 2 dirty cops. Same experience here.. 1700+ cops and would be surprised if more than a couple were dirty. We fired a cop this year for getting free tickets for a movie by implying he worked on the contract for the theater. So it would really have to be significant to get anyone to bite. Now if I found a duffle bag full of cash while walking through the desert....

First, yes... 87K with overtime is EASILY 100K, but if you want to keep harping on "Detroit", sure, I can say I didn't have a clue what Detroit cops made... because I've never lived in Detroit.
Los Angeles though, I do know about.
Second... I have zero option to skip court if I'm summoned... EVEN IF THE CASE ISN'T MY OWN. If I'm listed as a fucking witness for someone else's bullshit, I STILL have to go and while I PERSONALLY don't lose any money... I don't make any extra for it either... So why you don't seem to get the fact that you are the ONLY person getting overtime in that court room is pretty special.
Next... my rant is not against public sector employees making a wage... It's pretty specific... It's OVERTIME... So keep it in mind... OVERTIME is not some "right" and it's not some thing that EVERYONE gets... There are a TON of jobs that the people in them do not get overtime... Why you seem to think that it's some right for you and your tax burden brethren is pretty appalling.
So pay close attention tax burden... I'm not saying you don't deserve your salary... I'm saying you don't deserve overtime and you sure as hell don't deserve to be able to write tickets to force you into that overtime.
But here's the rub... all I can do is keep on voting and maybe, just maybe, this country and the people in it will eventually wake up and realize you aren't there for THEM... You and I both know you aren't here "for the people".
I digress though... The bottom line is that until I can convince other people (and it's happening slowly but surely in this country) that your group doesn't deserve overtime like a good percentage of people in this country don't get, then you'll keep sucking down those dollars.
You do your thing and I'll do mine and hopefully one day, I'll get it done.... Either that, or you and your public sector types will bankrupt the local governments until they have to hire outside police contractors to do the job. (Like they've started doing in Detroit. Something about Detroit I do know)
