The brutal truth behind how the contestants lose weight
-
What's that fat cow complaining about? She lost 121 pounds on the show.

Did any of you two read the article?
-
Holy shit. Just because she lost weight doesn't mean she did it the right way. Jesus, she developed health problems from it.
-

Did you, "Coach"? She was 265 pounds at 5'6". Jesus, being that fat would cause her to develop health problems from it.
-
yummy :P

Coach, I say this respectfully, but it's an entertainment show first and foremost. They want ratings. They don't "care" about these people and the trainers want exposure.
Secondly she already had and was going to continue to develop health problems. Losing weight in a non healthy manner was literally the least of her health concerns.
She felt the show was real, because to her it was, but to everyone else it was a job.
-
Holy shit. Just because she lost weight doesn't mean she did it the right way. Jesus, she developed health problems from it.
a shrunken gut is a health benefit, not a health problem, coach.

Hey Coach, what if Obama asked you to be his trainer? Would you do it?

I give up. There's no intelligent life on this planet. (Banging head on table)

I wouldn't give him the satisfaction.

Since there is no intelligent life on this planet, that would include you as well.
What is your solution to this young woman's health problems? If she weighed 265 pounds at 26 years of age, how much would she weigh when she was 46? She lacked discipline and motivation, both of which she got on "Biggest Loser". She is complaining about it now, but the show gave her a life-changing (and maybe life-saving) experience.

800-1000cal a day, "working out" for 6-8hrs, burnt out thyroid, pissing blood, etc. seriously. How can you even think that way.

Compare it to her lifestyle before. 4,000-5,000 cal/day, sedentary 24/hrs per day, jacked thyroid, overworked heart, high cholesterol, and arteriosclerosis and diabetes lurking in the future. Is the show extreme? Yes. Did she need an extreme intervention? Yes.

who cares about those TV fucks, i come here to feast my eyes on semi naked muscle men

When you lose that quick it's guaranteed you gain it back. She was better off when she was fat. Again, you can't be serious.
Losing weight = water, fat, muscle. Not to mention damage being done to her by, running, jumping and whatever they do to fat people that have no business doing that.
-
I read the article, but I've never really watched the show. My understanding is the people who loses the most weight, respectively to their initial weight wins. It's a contest based on reality tv?
Her complaint was her harsh treatment and monitoring of all her actions? I don't think it was exactly Auschwitz. One contestant had a family issue but choose to stay because the contest would have gone on without him; interestingly enough Trent Richardson of the Colts won't play the Patriots today because of a family issue, no one suggested postponing the contest this evening.
She felt duped and abused by a TV show, I get that. She thought her trainers cared about her health, they didn't; if she took the advice to smoke so she could sur press her appetite then she's the idiot. For the trainers it's a CONTEST I'm sure the producers were encouraging them to get them to get extreme weight loss goal, they played the two groups against each other.
If you posted this on an automotive board I could see you getting the reaction you wanted. You posted it here where we know about the dirty secrets of "health and fitness".
With all your experience and contacts I'm surprised you are shocked by the smoke and mirrors of television. Did you think the show picked the trainers based on their morals?
-

Coach, you can't be serious. She was 265 pounds at 5'6". There is no way a 26 year old at that weight is "healthy", and the older she gets the harder it will be for her to lose weight. This woman was on track to being 350 or 400 pounds by her late 40s. Did she lose water weight? Sure. Did she lose fat? Absolutely yes. Did she lose muscle? Probably not much, considering she had little to start with.
She may gain the weight back, but that will be up to her. If she continues exercising and eats properly, she should be fine. If she goes back to her old ways, she will get back to her old weight and probably surpass it. At least "The Biggest Loser" gave her a realistic chance to improve her life.
-

The more important question is:
After the weight loss, would you take her to a nice restaurant for a date?
-
The methods on the show seem extreme, unnecessarily so.

The article insinuates they didn't teach them the skills necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
That said what do these people think when they're going to do when they drop 100 pounds in 30 days, just eat chicken breast and tuna with lemon water?
The general public doesn't understand how hard it can be to maintain an active lifestyle. Everyone thinks if they work out they'll get to big or if they juice they'd be a pro in whatever sport they train for.
It's always funny we people say health is the main concern when nothing about their life is healthy to begin with.
Oh and it's a COMPETITIVE REALITY TELEVISION SHOW airing during prime time. They don't care about 30 random fatsos, if they did people wouldnt be sent home every week, they'd keep working with them on the weight loss.
-

This is 100% true but we can say the same thing about the violence of the collisions in the NFL.
Ratings are the bottom line.

Classic case of misunderstood unhappiness. They thought loosing weight and being thin would make them feel a better about themselves. But if your mind says you still suck now you've got problems.
They don't realize they've always been unhappy with their self.*

Doesn't matter. As Dave D said, it's easy to see why they do it given the context of the the show. But it's dangerous and doesn't necesarily set them up for success going forward.
If you think that the methods employed are healthy and safe, run with that.

Zero fucks given for these ham beasts (no offense)

If you think that the methods employed are healthy and safe, run with that.
For a woman to be considered obese her bodyfat must be 39% or greater. If you think that is "healthy and safe", run with that.
Dr. Robert Huizenga defended the show's approach, saying that although slow weight loss can be effective, it rarely resolves patients' obesity-related health problems entirely before patients abandon it and weight regain ensues. He added that slow weight loss routinely results in muscle loss, leaving patients with a higher proportion of fat-to-lean muscle tissue: "Loser" participants, by contrast, changed their body composition in the opposite direction, ending with a higher ratio of lean muscle and bone to fat than they had had at the outset. Participants' average percentage of body fat decreased from a starting level of 48.9% to 30.4% at week 24.

Nice strawman, but of course that's not what I said. Try to stay within the context of the argument.
I didn't saw keeping her current weight was healthy. I said the methods to lose the weight, mostly due to the context of the show, are dangerous, unhealthy, and don't set up for success.
-

Nope, not strawman. Coach and you think the show's methods are dangerous. If the people on the show did not appear on "Biggest Loser", they would remain in a physical state that is at least as (or more than) dangerous as the "unhealthy" experience they had on the show. You have to look not just at the show, but also at the next best alternative.
-
First we should feel sorry that these participants ate themselves into becoming fucking land manatees, and now we should feel sorry for them having lost weight, albeit in a controversial way?
Fucking kidding me? No sympathy for people like this, they should've realized a long time ago that they were fucking themselves up by continuing to eat for whatever reason. It's like saying we should feel sorry for bodybuilders in thongs that have to be put on dialysis by their 30's due to steroid use.
Also, great fucking friend she had, 265lbs was the mark she thought to herself; "Oh wow, my friend is getting fat!"????
Should both be off'd.
-

So you defend your strawman with....another strawman.
Once again, you've changed the discussion. I was not commenting on whether or not the results outweighed the methods. Just that the methods are dangerous.
-
Holy shit. Just because she lost weight doesn't mean she did it the right way. Jesus, she developed health problems from it.
Your believe what those idiots say?
"My hair is still falling out."
"I had short term memory loss."
"My knees sound like Saran wrap."
They get fat again after the show and because they can't take responsibility for anything (why they're fat in ther first place) and want to blame someone else like they have their whole life

I give up. There's no intelligent life on this planet. (Banging head on table)

Did any of you two read the article?
I read it.
These people(clinically obese who do the show) want fast rapid weight loss at any cost!
They get what they want, then complain.
If they exercised & ate correctly it would take them 3 x as long to lose the weight, but it would be healthy and sustainable.... but they'd still complain about it taking too long and would drop out.
They are a lot like liberals , particularly blacks.... they are professional victims. It's never their fault and when they get what they want they still complain complain complain.
-

Then go pitch a show where contestants eat healthy and perform moderate exercise while losing their excess weight over a period of 3-5 years.

I read it but GBrs would sooner see the overweight put to death than show a moment of concern for them....GBrs would agree with the article in that their physical issues are punishment for being fat.

I think the fact that THE BIGGEST LOSER is GAME SHOW is being lost here.
If a grand prize winner of WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE complained that the show offered no other financial advice then don't spend it all in one spot, after cutting the check then said the money wasn't enough to last a lifetime; we'd blame them for their poor choices.
If the final match up from the BACHELOR complained that the shows producers pushed them into the marriage and no one told them how hard marriage was, especially because they were looking for true love and happiness, we'd mock them incessantly.
If a contestant on THE PRICE IS RIGHT objected because the game show wasn't playing by JEOPARDY'S rules we'd think they were morons.
So if a GAME SHOW, about extreme weight loss was called THE BIGGEST LOSER, were to treat the CONTESTANTS poorly and they used drastic and unethical tactics we should respond how?
I get some people have weight issues they want and need help with. Life and genetics are unfair and we all can't eat and exercise the same way. I'm not talking about punishing obesity and I don't think most commenting here are.
I'm holding these contestants responsible for their decisions. If the show was that dangerous why didn't they get help? I'm sure they were under an immense amount of pressure and stress to comply but what did they think they were signing up for, the world's healthiest weight loss challenge?
Meltdown
-
Read the fucking article. She was a lot healthier obese than what she is now thanks to these idiot producers.
-
Now, Jezebel has picked it up. Look at the comments

-
Read the fucking article. She was a lot healthier obese than what she is now thanks to these idiot producers.
I have and just read it again, where exactly does it say she was healthier obese?
I understand that's what the article is insinuating based on her health problems she experienced while/since doing the show, but they never disclose her health prior to being accepted, other then her height and weight (she says, among several issues, her thyroid is messed up now because of the weight loss but it probably already was not functioning properly not doubt playing a roll with her obesity).
The article states the amount of money they make off the show from their products and supplements, which we at getbig know those products are a scam.
The article also states that people generally gain back half the weight they originally lost on most life style changes.
Im not condoning the methods used. They are drastic and dangerous.
But I'm not surprised in the least bit that a television show, made for profit and entertainment purposes, is using these tactics.
What is the issue here, that a TV game show is using dangerous weight loss practices to exploit contestants for the networks profit?
This is a surprise to most?
Or am I missing something?
-
Just proves that fatties will always whine about something. No doubt she will be back to her land manatee self in no time, talking about how she feels better being a fat lazy slob, and the inevitable: "I'm happy my curves are back".
-
Healthier then a lot of bodybuilders getting ripped for contests for much less money and exposure. Stupid none the less.
-
Lol, got skinny... still not hot.
Should have stayed fat, at least then she was comical to look at.
-
yummy :P

Would absolutely destroy this angry whore
-
Exactly and why would anyone think this would be anything less than extreme?
the contestants on the show are headed for an early grave.
Some may develop health problems from doing it but by staying the course they've shown they do have the drive and discipline to succeed! Whether they take away what they've learnt and continue to maintain a healthy weight is down to them.
you're right That doing it in a less extreme manner, these people will see no visual results and continue on the course of destruction by giving up and getting bigger and bigger and cutting their life expectancy back even more.
i wonder has any of the side effects from extreme weight loss led to life threatening condition or disability?
has anyone died as a result of the extreme methods used? I'd say more Fat people have died as a result of not doing something extreme to counter their situation
I read it.

Ahhh, I see your reasoning. So being fat automatically means she already had health problem? So instead of going to a doctor or realizing herself she needs to lose BEFORE she develops health problems, she goes on a game show with a bunch of fake "trainers" that drive her into the ground (and her not realizing that this was going to happen) and almost immediately start developing health problems and injuries. I see.

[...]Contestants are made to sign contracts giving away rights to their own story lines and forbidding them to speak badly about the show.[...]

I don't feel sorry for her, she's an adult and signed a legally binding contract.

There is a show like this on OLN I think, it's called "Fat Guys in the Woods" or something (I am serious about this).
It's actually a decent show, the few times I've seen it.
