Title: I've decided what I want to do with my life after timely consideration
Post by: Wiggs on January 25, 2015, 10:10:13 AM
I tend to take my time regarding making decisions that will severely impact my life (anyone should).  I never thought it would be a careerfield I'd consider because of my ego. But after working closely with them for a year and picking their brains, I've decided this is my calling for the following reasons:

1.  I enjoy helping people...I mean I really enjoy helping people, it's the way I am.
2. There will not be a recession or depression in this career field.
3. I get to really use my brain.
4.  I make great money and have the potential to make even greater money.
5.  Plenty of time off. Can you beat working 3 12 hour shifts per week and getting paid 70gs +per year and much more if you want overtime (100g category depending on the specialty)?
6. 4 weeks off and more per year.
7. Respect
8. I have a B.A. already and don't have to go to too much school to start working
9. I can work anywhere in the world
10. I still have my Post 911 G.I. Bill to go to school for free and get paid while I do it.

The career field is Registered Nurse.  I've heard the test to get your license is difficult but I've always been a good student so I have no doubt I'll pass if I pay attention and study.

I have some  prerequisite biology classes I must knock out before I get started and I go to an orientation next week.

I can't tell you how shitty it feels to not know what you want to do in life but not being broke or poor.  I'm glad I've found my calling.

Do you ladies and gents have any additional info to add or advices?

Good Luck to you Wiggs.  I could never do that job and admire those that can greatly.  A lot of the times, you provide more for the patients than any doctor ever will.  I just can`t imagine seeing that many people die on a daily basis, especially people you care for and grow to care about.  That part must be the most difficult of all to deal with.

As for any advice, embrace the Science.

Good luck, you are doing something most can never do and its probably one of the most important things any human being on earth can do.

Yes Maxx, I used to think the same thing.  I don't anymore.  Male nurses are in demand btw, the hospital I work at and others are always complaining about never having enough.  The potential financial upside is just too great in this shitty economy.

You may want to consider getting your LVN/LPN first. It's a one-year program and after licensure you can go directly into the second year of nursing school and a year later have your RN. It would still take you the same amount of time to get your RN, but halfway through you could start working as an LVN if you needed cash. As a registry LVN you can set your own schedule, so you would still have time for school. Starting pay for LVNs in California is $21/hr.
Going the LVN route first also lets you experience what nursing is all about. If you find you don't like it, you have only invested one year into it instead of the two years required for an RN. That means you would also only use one year of your GI Bill benefits. Nursing isn't for everyone. You will be dealing with shit, piss, blood, and vomit on a daily basis. On the other hand it has great job security.
You may want to also consider allied health professions. Radiology techs make a median income of $56K. Respiratory therapists can make as much as $60K. Physical therapists are in demand and can make as much as $80K (these salaries are all in California; Las Vegas may vary, of course). These are all much more pleasant jobs than nursing.

P.S. As for being a male nurse (and black) you will find yourself in great demand in nursing, as hospitals are interested in "diversity" of employees.

most of the job is about "accompanying" (managing) people who are dying at a slow pace daily. That's what nurses do and it's pretty tough on your nerves except if you dont really care about people and only see them as a resource that comes and go and whose suffering allow you to get paid. Requires more cynicism than heart to be honnest.
Good luck with that.

Thanks for the info about the LVN.  I check into that.  Funny you mention it but I've already considered Radiology and Respiratory Therapist.  Spoke with people in those departments and picked their brains.  I like the job security of a RN more.  Yes, about the diversity.  Although, I'll say most of the nurses I see here are Filipino or another Asian ethnicity.

You should also look for programs subsidized by the government. If you were in SoCal there is a great program in Anaheim called the North Orange County Regional Occupational Program
Vocational Nursing Program. It's a 13-month program that costs a whopping $3,535. That includes everything: books, uniforms, background check, and exam fees. It's probably the best deal in nursing in the entire country.

Were all dying at a slow pace daily Uberman.  You still care, you just get numb to it after a while. I've been through that being Security in the hospital.  I'm sure nursing will be no different.  You're right, it can be very stressful.

Uberman, let me assure you, how I am on this board is not a reflection of how I treat people in real life. The same way a white person may feel about blacks.  I look at the person first.  Salvation is for everyone.

Umm, because a security guard makes $24,000/year and an RN makes $68,000/year?

$14.00 per hour vs. 40$ per hour.
40 hours per week and 1 week off per year vs. 40 hours per week and 4 weeks off per week.

That's for starters

I hope you realize that you're going to have to keep the preaching about Black Hebrews and God to yourself, as the hospital will probably frown upon employees trying to convert patients.

My daughter has her BSN and is working on her Nurse Practitioner degree. NP's make around 125K in this part of the country without over time.  Nursing is a hard field.

A problem in nursing is the lack of standards in training. You have nurses who go to 2 year schools, 4 years school, hospital specific nursing RN programs and now individual non degree schools as a path toward an RN. Nurses who got a 4 year degree in a real college are frustrated by those who take an easy path to get a BSN by attending a night school and home courses to make the pay raise jump.

If you are in something like the telemetry wing your patient load is high and the amount of work per patient is through the roof with a lot of liability. In the course of a 12 hour day you might not even have time for lunch except for eating a sandwich in 5 minutes. A doctor sees a patient 15 minutes a day in the hospital. They rely whether they admit it or not on the nurses to call and make recommendations concerning treatment according to what they see because they are ones with them 24 hours a day. The nurses are ones who keep the doctors from killing you. Nursing is a highly technical field now.

The first nurses were black. Fact.

Mary Eliza Mahoney (May 7, 1845 – January 4, 1926) was the first African American to study and work as a professionally trained nurse in the United States, graduating in 1879. Mahoney was one of the first African Americans to graduate from a nursing school and she prospered in a predominantly white society. She also challenged discrimination of the African American race in nursing.[1]

In 1908, she co-founded the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses (NACGN) with Adah B. Thoms. This was an organization, which began striving to uplift the standards and everyday life of African American registered nurses. This organization was a huge influence in eliminating racial discrimination in the registered nursing profession. [2] The NACGN eventually merged with the American Nurses Association (ANA) in 1951. She is commemorated by the biennial Mary Mahoney Award of the ANA for significant contributions in advancing equal opportunities in nursing for members of minority groups.[3] This award is granted to an individual in a minority group. This individual must have shown outstanding leadership, as well as significant contribution in the interracial medical community.

As part of another BS revenue stream for colleges, last I read you now have to get obtain a doctorate for physical therapy (DPT). This has been just with in the last few years.

Good for you Wiggs.  You have nothing to lose, especially if GI bill will cover the expenses.  Just take it seriously and do your best.  Being black is an advantage thanks to Clinton's laws.  You should easily get a job being an ex military black person.

So long as it's not a train station.

Good luck, Wiggs.  Remember the original nurses were poked dotted but since at least half those dots were black,  you have a 50/50 chance.

Be well.

Grew up near major metropolitan hospitals and dated a few nurses. Some pros and cons I've seen.

Pros
Pretty good money and benefits.
Consolidated 12 hr shifts. So you usually work only 3 days a week?
Good mobility. You can get  a job in any part of the country.

Cons
Stressful
It's essentially a customer service job. So, you're dealing with the public, a lot.
You have to work within a large bureaucracy. That can be frustrating.

Good luck, Wiggs.

Registered nurses don't do that. Certified nursing assistants (CNA) do that.

Certified nursing assistant: Your primary duties will consist of cleaning, bathing and helping patients with toilet duties. You’ll be qualified to feed patients and help them transfer in addition to taking vitals.

Registered nurse: You have the widest array of responsibilities that can include providing doctor-ordered treatments, operating and monitoring medical equipment, observe and record patient symptoms and oversee a staff of licensed practical nurses and CNAs.

Registered nurses don't do that. Nursing assistants or vocational nurses do that.
milton has way better odds to become a nursing assistant than a registered nurse tho. That's what most immigrants with no education do. 99.9% females too.

Nurses make pretty damn good money. I had a friend who became an RN. 2 weeks out of nursing school, she landed a job in a major hospital in an urban area. Starting pay was like 70-75K. Worked 3 days per week, 12 hour shifts.

Yes Maxx, I used to think the same thing.  I don't anymore.  Male nurses are in demand btw, the hospital I work at and others are always complaining about never having enough.  The potential financial upside is just too great in this shitty economy.

My sister is a nurse - seems like a very tough job to me. Long hours, lot's of emotional involvement.

I'd have a hard time doing it for many reasons - will you specialize at all?

No, its not lol.

Median household income has been on the rise for the past three years, climbing 3.8% to $53,891 in June, according to newly released data by Sentier Research. It's yet another indication that the economic recovery is taking hold.

By American standards, 80-100K is good. I mean, if you have 3 kids, its not that good. But a single person making that money will be fine.

According to getbig standards 80-100K is broke, dead poor.

Best of luck to you Wiggs!

Here in New York City, Registered Nurses (as per Salary.com & my niece who works for one of the top private institutions in the city) start between $85,000 - $90,000.

Considering that this is a 4-year, professional degree, you are literally going into the workforce with great job security (as nurses are wanted in all 50 states), great earning potential (if you already start at 85-90K, odds are you will see 6-figures in a matter of 2-3 years) and a world of options with regards to practice settings (you can do cardiac, gastroenterology, neurology, orthopedics, general medicine, who knows what else etc.).

Based on a wall street article I read a while back, nursing is one of the fastest growing fields. I think the best idea is to become one of those physician assistants or nurse practitioners (here in NYC, both make upwards of $135,000-$150,000 starting). My nephew (the one who smokes marijuana) is actually working towards becoming a Physician's Assistant and my niece who is a nurse is going back to grad school to do another 3 and half years of schooling (on top of the 4 years she already did) to now become a Nurse practitioner. While those other roles require a total of 7-8 years of schooling (undergrad + grad), it's something to think about down the line. Either way, you can not go wrong with the medical field. There are certain givens in life, one of which is that people will always either get sick or die at some point and for both instances, nurses are always necessary.

Best of luck!

I'm an actual working RN from one of the best places to work in the country as RN. back in my first year fresh out of school I easily made 100k. If I'd work 4 days a week  Icould gross around 160-170k. Yes the work can be hard and demanding but you gotta parlay it into something great for yourself in the end. There's many ways of making great money as a nurse with having excellent benefits at the same time.  You mentioned how you like the fact of how much time off of work you can get. well what you dount know is that if you play your cards right you can easily get more time off with using little to no pto at all if you work your schedule the right way. As a matter in fact I'm typing this post right now in Puerto Rico (which has incredible women everywhere you go! ) on my vacation for a week and all I needed to use was only one pto day. But if you have any questions just hit me up.

looking back at what you can remember of your life you should be able to concede that you have the  attention span of a flea and no capability to commit to anything.
you will not be a nurse. it requires commitment and perseverence

I went back an did what you are looking into. About 8 years after I finished my history degree I realized it was time to make a change, so I went for a BSN. I did an accelerated/second degree program, which was basically Sophomore, Junior and Senior years crammed into 15 months. It was grueling and had a high attrition rate, but it was definitely worthwhile.

If you do a traditional program there is really no way to speed it up because the classes are sequenced. Health Assessment has to come before Med-Surg I and II, and so on. I would not recommend the LPN idea that someone suggested. To me it is a different career path, I think anything other than going straight for a BSN would be a waste of time and would only distract you from your real goal. Nursing school is not easy from a workload perspective, and a lot of it is ticky tack busy work. I would love to tell that three years later I see the point of all those med sheets we filled out, but I don't.

I think some of the dollar figures in this thread are a little batty. I could get to that $70,000 point or have a 4 days a week off, but I can't do both. The real money comes when you pick up extra shifts. Where I work we get a pretty nice per hour bonus plus time and a half overtime after 40 hours. I could make around $50 an hour in that 4th 12 hour shift. Personally I generally value the time off more.  As far as ease of finding a job as a new graduate, I think that it is often overstated. There is a lot of regional variation. Where I live it can be somewhat difficult for a new grad, as there are a ton of nursing schools.  Having said that I found a job at a ranked hospital within a couple weeks of passing the NCLEX.

The reason I chose nursing was because there were so many different options. Not all involve caring for the elderly or the terminally ill. That is not the area that I work in. Good luck with it and I'm sure you'll find something you enjoy.

Good Luck, Wiggs.  I think you are getting in over your head here.  I don't know too many nurses that came from menial/labor type jobs...

Wrong from beginning to end. Nursing and Doctoring in Western Civilization is a complete and utter scam. It's symptom management and I want no part of it. It's archaic and used to make money where money shouldn't be made. Total scam!

Whenever I see a male nurse I think it's a bit odd and wonder if they are gay.  It is a sensitive and caring profession which are not hetero male characteristics.

I do a double-take on male nurses.

Male secretaries used to be the norm before women entered the workplace in WW2.  They are now called Administrative Assistants.  Still not many hetero men do that.

Barbers are hetero/macho but hairdressers are not.  Male florists are usually gay.

Male dancers are suspect also.  How many Dads send their sons to ballet classes?  Patrick Swayze was a dancer and not gay.  DWTS male dancers are hetero and gay.

Prison guard/soldier/cop are masculine professions.  Lesbians flock to them.

Lots of gay men are actors.  They like that stuff.

10% of society is homo so they are into everything.

My old business partner, with whom I used to run a small accounting firm, now works exclusively for major hospitals in New York City and one of the services he provides includes payroll management. I just asked him what the starting pay for Nurses in New York City is and he stated that at private hospitals, new grads start at about $95,000-$100,000. That's pretty impressive considering most of them are just kids that have just finished their college education.

Wiggs, maybe worth reconsidering?

LPN is the community college degree.  Licensed practical nurse.  Not as difficult to get.

As for RN, you have to take and do well and pass hard tests in sciences to get your 4 year undergrad degree.

They are the same classes pre-med students take plus you take nursing courses.

RN is where the high paid nursing jobs are.

That's all I know.  I may have wrong facts.

All I'm hearing is excuses, man. You've had how many career choices you've told us about now? This has to have been the 5th one that we know of; god knows how many you kept to yourself. You've moved across the country repeatedly trying to find greener pastures but you're still hitting a wall, personally and professionally. The reason for that is you can't stick to anything and when things get hard, you spit on them and walk away. I used to be like you and wondered why things never seemed to work out in the long term for me. I blamed other people. I said my choices were fine, it's just the things themselves that weren't up to my caliber.

It doesn't work, bro. You're pushing 40. Comes a point where you have to really decide whether everyone else is crazy, stupid, selfish, worthless etc or whether there's something you're doing wrong. I don't think you've reached that point yet. You still look for any and every reason under the sun to explain away why you changed your mind about things you previously felt strongly about. No one will or can do this for you. No woman will come along and "save" you from yourself. Your family doesn't care. Society doesn't, either. Why? Not because you did anything wrong. It's because after a certain age no one gives a shit. You have to fight for yourself, and that doesn't mean paying the rent and car note. I know you do that. I'm talking about your personal battles that you haven't fully begun to fight with. Those, you're on your own here.

You're not an idiot. You're not a typical black guy. You know you have it in you to have done any of these things you set out to do. But you're frustrated every time you come close to taking them to their logical endpoint. Why?

What a good post!

Given your liberal bent on most issues and lefty compassion for things/people that generally don't deserve it, you seem a custom fit for the profession. I really truly think you'd do great at it once you finish the annoying academic stage. You'll be providing bedside company and regular medical attention to meth addicts, lung cancer smokers, obese people, self-mutilating depressives, mentally disturbed weirdos whose family kicked them out and all manner of annoying worthless ćunt that ends up into the human scum filter of your ward thanks to Obamacare in no time.

Although nurses only work 3 days per week, 12 hour shifts, there is tons of research about the negative outcomes of such shifts. It's really not that great, especially coupled with the fact that if someone dies, your license can be on the line. But, I guess that also depends if its the MD's fault.

At one point, I was working four, 10 hour days at Sears and this was perfect. Right in between 3-5 day work schedule without feeling burned out.

Sears was a great company at one time though.

Companies have a definite lifespan and then they go under or get bought out or taken over which usually doesn't end well.

The research is mixed.  The biggest issue with shorter shifts is that they will involve a greater number of hand-offs and that this is where vital information can be left out/forgotten.

People die all the time, even when everything is done correctly. Short of gross neglect, nobody is losing their license
