Grew up near major metropolitan hospitals and dated a few nurses. Some pros and cons I've seen.

Pros
Pretty good money and benefits.
Consolidated 12 hr shifts. So you usually work only 3 days a week?
Good mobility. You can get  a job in any part of the country.

Cons
Stressful
It's essentially a customer service job. So, you're dealing with the public, a lot.
You have to work within a large bureaucracy. That can be frustrating.

Good luck, Wiggs.

nothing wrong with that at all but how will you handle literally wiping another person's ass and bathing them?

E

Registered nurses don't do that. Certified nursing assistants (CNA) do that.

Certified nursing assistant: Your primary duties will consist of cleaning, bathing and helping patients with toilet duties. You’ll be qualified to feed patients and help them transfer in addition to taking vitals.

Registered nurse: You have the widest array of responsibilities that can include providing doctor-ordered treatments, operating and monitoring medical equipment, observe and record patient symptoms and oversee a staff of licensed practical nurses and CNAs.

Registered nurses don't do that. Nursing assistants or vocational nurses do that.
milton has way better odds to become a nursing assistant than a registered nurse tho. That's what most immigrants with no education do. 99.9% females too.

We shall see.

Nurses make pretty damn good money. I had a friend who became an RN. 2 weeks out of nursing school, she landed a job in a major hospital in an urban area. Starting pay was like 70-75K. Worked 3 days per week, 12 hour shifts.

I still am in Security That is a job.  I'm working towards a career. Haha about being mentally unstable.  I'm better than I've been in a long time.  As long as I have God on my side, who can be against me?  :)

I've heard of nurses losing their jobs for a simple possession of weed bust and never able to get another in that field.

Yes Maxx, I used to think the same thing.  I don't anymore.  Male nurses are in demand btw, the hospital I work at and others are always complaining about never having enough.  The potential financial upside is just too great in this shitty economy.

My sister is a nurse - seems like a very tough job to me. Long hours, lot's of emotional involvement.

I'd have a hard time doing it for many reasons - will you specialize at all?

Is that a lot of money in US?

Honest question btw. Just seem so little for the stupidly unsociable hours, dealing with cranky c.unts and essentially being on your feet the whole day.

No. In the US $80,000 is considered minimum wage.

No, its not lol.

Median household income has been on the rise for the past three years, climbing 3.8% to $53,891 in June, according to newly released data by Sentier Research. It's yet another indication that the economic recovery is taking hold.

By American standards, 80-100K is good. I mean, if you have 3 kids, its not that good. But a single person making that money will be fine.

According to getbig standards 80-100K is broke, dead poor.

pick an area to specialize in that allows for better pay. I dont know what areas are in high demand really I have a few friends that are radiology techs and seem to make a good living.

Houston is a great place for nursing especially if youre involved in treating cancer.

Best of luck to you Wiggs!

Here in New York City, Registered Nurses (as per Salary.com & my niece who works for one of the top private institutions in the city) start between $85,000 - $90,000.

Considering that this is a 4-year, professional degree, you are literally going into the workforce with great job security (as nurses are wanted in all 50 states), great earning potential (if you already start at 85-90K, odds are you will see 6-figures in a matter of 2-3 years) and a world of options with regards to practice settings (you can do cardiac, gastroenterology, neurology, orthopedics, general medicine, who knows what else etc.).

Based on a wall street article I read a while back, nursing is one of the fastest growing fields. I think the best idea is to become one of those physician assistants or nurse practitioners (here in NYC, both make upwards of $135,000-$150,000 starting). My nephew (the one who smokes marijuana) is actually working towards becoming a Physician's Assistant and my niece who is a nurse is going back to grad school to do another 3 and half years of schooling (on top of the 4 years she already did) to now become a Nurse practitioner. While those other roles require a total of 7-8 years of schooling (undergrad + grad), it's something to think about down the line. Either way, you can not go wrong with the medical field. There are certain givens in life, one of which is that people will always either get sick or die at some point and for both instances, nurses are always necessary.

Best of luck!

$14.00 per hour vs. 40$ per hour.
40 hours per week and 1 week off per year vs. 40 hours per week and 4 weeks off per week.

That's for starters

I want this.

He'd be fire in a second.

Even Christian based hospitals have to treat everyone.

I tend to take my time regarding making decisions that will severely impact my life (anyone should).  I never thought it would be a careerfield I'd consider because of my ego. But after working closely with them for a year and picking their brains, I've decided this is my calling for the following reasons:

1.  I enjoy helping people...I mean I really enjoy helping people, it's the way I am.
2. There will not be a recession or depression in this career field.
3. I get to really use my brain.
4.  I make great money and have the potential to make even greater money.
5.  Plenty of time off. Can you beat working 3 12 hour shifts per week and getting paid 70gs +per year and much more if you want overtime (100g category depending on the specialty)?
6. 4 weeks off and more per year.
7. Respect
8. I have a B.A. already and don't have to go to too much school to start working
9. I can work anywhere in the world
10. I still have my Post 911 G.I. Bill to go to school for free and get paid while I do it.

The career field is Registered Nurse.  I've heard the test to get your license is difficult but I've always been a good student so I have no doubt I'll pass if I pay attention and study.

I have some  prerequisite biology classes I must knock out before I get started and I go to an orientation next week.

I can't tell you how shitty it feels to not know what you want to do in life but not being broke or poor.  I'm glad I've found my calling.

Do you ladies and gents have any additional info to add or advices?

My good friend Peter has been an RN for about 15 years now. Overall, he loves his job.
