However the ego it would require to rise to power, take control of a country, establish yourself as the sole leader, go on a war path instigating battle with neighboring nations and take command of them, turning on your allies and when the whole plan begins to unravel this individual would decide it would be in their best interest to retreat to some quiet, uneventful, relatively powerless, solitary life out of the public eye seems highly unlikely.

I wouldn't even try to guess as to whether he survived, but the idea isn't something to immediately dismiss. While mserable death is usually left for the little people, some heavies have gotten theirs along the way, too. Only thing for sure is that we probably won't find out.

If Saddam is exactly as he's been introduced and shown to us through media, then I'd say you're right.
But at the same time, IF everything is as represented, then Saddam wouldn't be doing himself any favors by attempting to do as you say. Whatever fleeting moments of narcissism he could get in, surely couldn't seem worth the consequences.
