So I just started benching again about 3-4 weeks ago as my shoulder and elbow has been in pain for years so even when I benched rarely wouldn't really go over 225 often. All of a sudden everything feels good.Benched today and got 245 for 18,275 for 14,315 for 8.Felt great do do 3 plates for reps again.Weighed 242 today,I'm no Hercules but I don't see to many guys repaying 315.Just wanted to see where you hulks were at on bench and what you weigh.also no juice or supps no spotter no bounce and legs up.
-
300 but only for like 3 reps.
-
Me and Brad Castelberry lift 650 for reps, all day baby!

245 for over eighteen thousand reps is impressive, but I think the 14 thousand plus bench for 8 reps is better.

I'd say 225 for 12 is 300 for a 2-4.for me anyways.

I wouldn't get that translation.
Only benched over 300 twice....once 315, once 325. Could do 225 x 18 that day, but couldn't likely do 300 for more than 1-2.
It's different for everyone though.
-
240 but I can do 100 push ups at one go
-
275 for 5 sets of 5 till i was in my early 40's than not as much. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( at about 185 lbs.nothing to really brag about.

I can bench 2 Hebrews at the same time, one arm each

Varies with bodyweight. Working sets no matter how heavy I am I rarely go above 315/365 though
Don't think I've ever pushed 405 flat, just 365x8. Heaviest decline i do 425 x3, but 315 x15-20 is the usual heaviest I go. Heaviest incline I've ever done was 365x3 in a smith machine (long, long ago). Usually only go 225-245 for 6-8 now.
Don't have the bone-structure/frame to push heavy, especially flat.

I'd say that's pretty heavy.

That's damn good at 185 and good at any weight,
-
I'd say that's pretty heavy.
No, heavy would be 425-495 considering bodyweigjtss of 225-235
-
240 but I can do 100 push ups at one go
thats impressive
-
max ever for 1 rep=365
max for strict reps bodyweight without a warmup for a benh reps for bodyweight comp= 19 reps(17 official) with 235lbs
-
warmed up today and did three set of 275 on the incline, no spot. could have gone with the 295. not bad for a 60 year old mutt.

275 on incline is pretty impressive for anyone.
-
I no longer bench. Personal best, 445 max. 365 for 6 for 2 sets. 315 for 12 reps 3 sets. 225 for 25. Incline best 315 for 5 reps.

To me 300 so strong. You don't see to many people bench 300 with good form or at all.
I only need two hands to count the number of times I've ever seen someone bench more than 315 for reps with good form. I mostly work out in commercial and university gyms though. The people on here who act like that level of strength is a common thing are either restricting their sample to a very narrow slice of the population (e.g. athletes who train to be big and/or strong) or are just full of it. 315x8 or so is crazy strong among the general population and most people will never get there even if they are very dedicated lifters.
People also way overestimate what their one-rep max is from multi-rep maxes. I've known lots of guys who will grunt out 225x8 with their platonic lifting partner rowing half the weight off their chest the last two reps, then will claim they are good for "a few reps of 315" (lol).
The most I've ever done is 230.
-
Bench was always my worst lift. I could probably bench 175 for 1. I weigh 200.

I agree with this. Most people do not have this kind of strength. Most people do not trAin for this kind of strength either. Most people do not know how to tap into their mind to muscle connection to do so. Most people do not believe it possible and therefore never try nor reach their genetic limits naturally.
I trained with the notion that I could do it. I never once told myself or let anyone make me believe I could not do the weights I wanted. I trained hard every week for years. I kept a training journal of all my workouts so I could see what worked and what did not.
Mostly I learned to train by myself with no assistance from a so called spotter. I liked knowing that my lift was unassisted, all me. Whether I failed or not. In fact I strived to fail each and every time I worked out. I wanted to fail so I knew that I had literally hit my limit and that, that's when you grow stronger. I trained using the power rack so I could go all out without fear of injury when I did fail. This gave me confidence to go heavy every time.
Also the biggest method for having correct form and true strength. I started all of my pressing movement at the chest. Not from the top. I started from a complete stall, no momentum or body thrashing. All my lifts where clean and mechanical, like a machine.

** type d. this out twice and my phone died each time from taking it off the charger too soon and it got a littlenjumbled up LOL**
For general population even 200lbs-even is"strong". Itsbassumed here are ppl arnt "gen pop"& have at least some experience training, especially on thenbench.
When I bench, i use proper powerlifting technique. After switching from the common bbing bench technique (elbows out,& the bar coming down to the nipple level with medium arch in the back, & a wide, thumbless grip on the bar), to a powerlifting technique with...
-elbows tucked in by my sides. This helps the late drive out of bottom of the movement and helps get the triceps involved as much as possible. IMO triceps are the most important muscle group used in the bench press. You have a good bench press without a strong chest was wrong shoulders but you cannot have a good mattress without strong triceps.
-bar comes below my nipples to the bottom of my sternum,
-with as'a arch as I can get in my back, (see below)
-and a tight, closed grip that's a hand-space wider than shoulder-width.. So tight it seems as if im trying to "break the bar" like it's a stick. This also 'activates' the triceps and forces the elbows to stick by the sides. Benching with an open or suicide grip is like turning the triceps off in the movement
Pressing in this manner allows the pics two come into play as much as possible.
If you go to the Mirror and look at your hand placement and the angle of your upper arms in relation to your torso when you are flexing your chest, in a most muscular pose for instance, you will see then your arms and hands are not out in front of your face or straight out front of your chest like you're throwing a punch. Instead, when flexing your chest & tensing the pec fibers your hands are down much lower sort of like a most muscular pose... That's the same angle you want to mimic when bench-pressing to activate as many of the pec fibers as possible. To getnthat similar angle, you gotta have as much arch in your back as possible. In the bottom of the movie you want your forearms to be perpendicular to the floor.
When you bench press like a bodybuilder with your arms out almost forming a "T", with no arch in your back, you place your upper body in a really weak position to use the pecs, and it turns into an anterior delt and triceps movement.
Put 60lbs on my working weights within a couple weeks after switching to a powerlifting style bench press after using a bodybuilding style bench press for 12years... And that was after an 8month layoff of not pressing anything due to a bursa in my right shoulder.... meaning that after 2 weeks of returning to pressing I was already pressing 60 lb heavier with the powerlifting style bench press then I was prior to the injury with the bodybuilding style bench press

Pre injury
Best single 220kg.
reps 320lbs x 18
Best incline
5 x 420lbs.
Bodyweight around 210lbs.
Post injury -- laughably light.
If I bench at all.
-
.
-
315 for 5 reps is my best. Havent used spotters since 6-7 years so no singles. I normally finish last set with 270 for 10-15 reps, depending on condition. bench is my worst lift out of the big 3. Hands are long and shit.
-
dont know about benching but i can probably do 20+ pushups if i had too
-
Since my last pec tear I haven't benched and have developed a nagging shoulder injury from overhead pressing. Probably only good for 335x1 or something now, if I had the guts/stupidity to try it with my threadbare titties.
-
Most, 177.5kg
From memory, the best I did on 140kg after doing a single 1RM type lift like that was 10 reps (and it felt light as fuck)
That was at 103kgish body weight natural (probably up to 25% bodyfat). I'm currently coming down to under 90kg to try to hit both peak strength and take a shot at double bodyweight bench. Right now, in diet mode I believe I would struggle for a single on 165kg (currently 91.9kg).
Could probably push around 6 on 140kg at current weight / diet situation (6 weeks in, having come down from 96.1kg)
-
245lbs for 15 reps, i used to bench 275lbs for 10 but my chest are now tear-sensible so 245lbs is enough for me.
Some ppl will call it weak but i've been lifting for 20 years now and i've rarely seen ppl benching more than 225 for 5 reps with a good form so i consider my 245 for 15 pretty correct.
-
I recently started again
I can do 35k a side for around 8/10 reps
I do them very slowly and controlled, I don't try and lift weight, I try and engage my chest.
-
The last time I performed a 1RM bench press was in my early 20's. Heavy benching eventually fucks up your shoulders. Don't ego lift. Best rep range for size is 8-12.
-
225 for 8 with good form. Lifetime natural. Highest bodyweight: 185lbs. Weirdly, I performed my best benches when I was around 160lbs while my best DL and Squat was at my highest weight.
-
275x3 about 10 years ago. Haven't done bb bench since, all DBs.
-
last time i had flat bench in my chest work out start with 130kg x 2 sets 8-10 then drop to 120kg x 2 sets to 1 before failure then 110kg 2 x sets. not sure of one rep max as haven't tried one since i first started training. probably 170-180kg going on the one rep max calculators

Best was recently 122.5 kg (269lbs) for 4 with very brief pause, then tried the next week for 5 but struggled to get 1 so have had to back off a bit, have relatively poor pressing strength having short legs and long torso and arms.

Thanks mate I train all exercises in the same manner I feel it's far safer and more productive, for me at least, I know others can prosper from the explosive style.
Not a fan of the new style coated plates myself, I love those old rusted ones.
kg to lb conversion appreciated
Haha I find it only fair to do so mate

That looked good, considering it looks like you have little/no leg drive on that. It's pure pressing strength.

340x2
315x8
225x25
@175-lb body weight.
-
315 for 3 or 4 reps a few years back.
Dont really train it so much anymore.
-
i've done 385 at the gym and 365 at an rps meet.
-
No idea,,. I never barbell bench.
-

Thanks mate, I think I'm too lazy to use leg drive I just like to lie comfortably back and press, would likely be out of breath with leg drive
Legs do twitch slightly so maybe unawaringly use a little, an older video of close grip bench 120 (264) x 1 shows they move a little, yes I'm fat bloated and look like an old man haha

Slacks look a little loose. Do you not own a pair of zubaz, or do you prefer not to work out in good gym clothes.
:)
Good lift bro

315x8
225x25

Matt we're still waiting on the video of these bench numbers. Surely you've recorded these lifts :-\

Haha thanks mate, I don't own any good clothes at all, let alone good gym clothes, I have t shirts getting on 20 years old haha
-
Usually do 8-10 reps on bench but last time I tried 315 on flat did 4 or 6. Work out straight out of bed (6 am). Much stronger at about mid morning so I wish I could do that more often.
-
Use to try a single for years every chest day after my work sets in the bench. Always hit 275 to 300lbs. Now I have a slap tear in both shoulders and arthritis. If I bench 225lbs my shoulders will be in pain for long time. I don't bench with a bar. I find dumbbells and machines protect my shoulders. Never thought the bench was a good test of strength. Show me a guy with a good power clean and I'll show you a guy that can sprint, jump and is athletic. The NFL has that combine test of a bench is a ridiculous test for a football player.
-

Yes, good sir. Unfortunately the two heaviest videos are Facebook videos. But anyone with a Facebook account will be able to see them. All lifts here are in "gym form". Of all the contests I have competed in, they have almost entirely been strongman contests, so I tend not to train with strict contest form.
Incidentally, I will competing in the CAASA Strongman Provincials next month in the lightweight class! So under 170-lb. I'm looking forward, especially given that it is held in my city! If all goes well, I will be off to nationals after that. Here are the lifts for anyone interested:
340x2 [I would even call it 2.5, heh. It was with a 50-lb bar]:
https://www.facebook.com/mattcanning1/videos/vb.512655848/10152277940400849
320x6 [I hate to say it, but I did not bring my camera to the gym on the day I did 315x8, partially because I was only expecting 1-2 reps]:
https://www.facebook.com/mattcanning1/videos/vb.512655848/10153215252005849
225x25:
Obviously these lifts are gym-form, although I realize I did not specify that in my earlier post on the subject.
My best lift in contest form was 310...arguably 315 though! I swear, I HATE being the first to go in the contest. The judge judged my lift the strictest, then when literally EVERYONE who came after me had bad form, he had no choice but to let it slide.
So I would argue my best contest bench was 315, and I would even go so far as to say I had 315x2 in me that day in contest form, weighing 172-b. That said, I only officially got 310, so that will have to be on record as my best contest life - with full/strict contest form.
I placed second that day in the <180-lb class. The only one to beat me was Dan Skaarup and he is honestly a pure freak bench presser. His brother Luke has been as high as, I believe, 6th in Canada's Strongest Man. The Skaarups in general are pure Danish freaks. It is no loss to come 2nd to Dan. He benched 350 with ease, weighing 180-lb on the button. Again, absolute freak bench presser, who has previously benched pressed 455-lb at 205! He, of course, beat me the next year in Thunder Bay's Strongest Man in the <200-lb class. I placed 2nd that day in my first strongman contest, and have enjoyed the sport at the "low level" ever since. As I have just had my third child, I do not wish to damage my fertility of health, so I keep it light, relatively speaking - for the sake of my joints, and my overall health.

You bench strength is impressive, even more so when you consider your weight.
Kudos

Thank you! I had to edit that post to add a couple of minor things. :)
Yes, all in all, given my weight, I can say I am pleased with my bench, and my lifts in general.
It's funny how on Getbig, everyone goes to a gym filled with people bench pressing 315 for reps. ???
I can honestly say that I have been at my gym since 2008, and worked out there off and on since 2001 prior to getting a full membership, and I cannot count ten men, myself included, who have bench pressed 315 for reps. And when Dorian came to town in 2000 for a seminar, that doesn't count. I mean among the regular members.
What gym do all the Getbiggers train at where everyone benches 315x12 for a warmup? ???
-
I'm talking benching today not in the past but alright I plan to get 405 in a couple months and have done 495,(my friend says I did 505 but I'm sure it was just 5 plates) on 500 mgs of test and 200 mgs of eq about 12 years ago weighing 255t.I got 405 for 6,5 years ago weighing 270 natty.havent benched in quite a while due to injuries so what I can bench now is what I listed. As far as I'm concerned when asked what I can bench it's 315 for 8.max I can prob get 365 but prob blow out a shoulder.

I bench 430 today for two with gym form.
;D
JK, but I'm generally around 300 or so if I'm even somewhat consistent. If I don't miss a bench day for around 14 weeks, I start getting up to 330-350 range.
Not to make excuses, but I do maintain a body weight of 170 for health. It has worked for me, so I intend to stay at 170. :)

Thank you, sir. I am pleased with it. I sort of max out around the 345 mark. Although I can't say I've really strongly attempted to get past that plateau.

315 may be impressive for non drug users, but for those of us who're over 220/240 and user anabolics with 20+ yrs training, 315bid kinda expected.

Flat benching is pectoral abuse-Vince Gironda.
STAY POSITIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

315 for 4 at 190 pounds.
-
I can see a reason to get past 345, Matt
Double bodyweight bench.
-
315x8, then dropped to 225x25 today.
220 pound 41yrs
Best ever was 405x2 at a few years younger...not a chance now
Fk... above matt pushed the same at 45pounds lighter :'(

I agree although i have never used anabolics, 315 was seriously very easy for me once i built up to it. I am fully aware that i was one in maybe 3 people at my small town gym who worked out with it. 225 was only used to stretch my muscles as it was not enough to work the muscle. 315 was my normal 3 set workout for a long time.

Was the 345 at 170?
I can actually answer that since I was there that day. Matt will correct me if I'm wrong, but both I think think were in the 170s. The one I saw he was 178. The other one I did not witness but the dude at the gym claimed he didn't spot Matt but I find that hard to believe as he was an honest 170 that day. Possibly even a few Lbs lower. Double body weight bench, even with gym form, is not a claim I take lightly. The spotter may have taken off 5 pounds that day. So call it 340@169. A group of us in town would rather Matt compete at 200. Why give up 30+ pounds in contest?

I did 450 at 217 pounds bodyweight back in May at a powerlifting meet. Looking to push that up to 500 at under 200 pounds in the next year or so, which would be a monster bench.

31 posts deep and you came to brag about your bench.
Good weights though but dropping under 200 to hit 500 will be tough. You doing this raw?

Are you actually questioning the EasternHammer?

97 posts deep and you defend a 31 post member?
Good move but having under 200 to defend under 50 is tough. You doing this raw?

Yes this is raw. Dropping weight hasn't been too difficult. I weighed 206 this morning. Gaining another 50 pounds on the press is the real challenge, but it will happen. I'm going to try some new compounds going into my next meet, I've only ever used testosterone.

was looking through your posts and saw that you benched 465 as a natty bout 2 years ago

That's true but I also weighed 300+ pounds when I did that. I'm a much better lifter now compared to then.

You hit 450 at 300? And you're going to hit 500 at 200?
Nice work
