Title: Water fasting on reddit, never seen such consistent posting of amazing results
Post by: Army of One on March 06, 2020, 07:12:51 AM
I always try to keep up with current trends on eating and dieting, have browsed many forums, reddits subs etc, but nowhere do I see the kind of results these people get.The overwhelming trend is the people who water fast, and truly stick to it, as in no food, just water for 7/10/14/21/28 days +, lose an insane amount of bodyfat and very little muscle.I say that from picture observations and people who have had muscle mass, bodyfat etc tested professionally before and after , which is the most minimal muscle loss I've seen from most diets.

Typically days 1 and 2 are easy, 3 and 4 the most difficult, then by day 5 hunger essentially goes.Only things you need to do it, are excess bodyfat, or your body will start burning muscle and organ tissue. Electrolytes, with potassium and sodium being all you really need, some add magnesium too.Potassium and sodium can be got with one teaspoon full of lite table salt in water once a day.And lastly obviously water, 1 litre+ a day.

People usually burn around 2/3 of a pound to a pound of bodyfat a day and keep it off once they resume eating, obviously gaining some of the water back when they introduce carbs. One guy went a year with just water and lost 300 pounds, with no negative effects on any measurable hospital test he took. Its really looking like eating anything, if you are mentally strong enough, is a complete waste of time while dieting.

It’s effectiveness was well documented in early 40’s Germany. Was insanely popular, 6 Million folks lost a staggering amount of weight.

Eat less - Move more - Burn more calories than you consume.
Simple - No need to reinvent the Wheel.

Yup, I would bet from the results I've seen they lost very little muscle, until obviously due to the circumstances they couldn't stop the forced water fast once they had very visibly defined abs.At that point your body needs energy from somewhere and will turn to muscle and organs.

Sure, but still everyone thinks you need to eat something or you die.The visions come up of hunger strikers who usually refuse the 1 litre plus of water needed to live per day, and don't take electrolytes which can lead to heart attacks, or they get so lean the body turns to muscle and organs.

Exactly. It's always the lazy fat fucks thinking their is some kinda secret short cut they just haven't discovered yet.

You didn't become fat overnight and you're not gonna lose it overnight. Also fatsos doing extreme diets nearly always falter and end up fatter than when they started.

But if you don't need food to lose fat, and lose fat faster without any, with negligible muscle loss, and very little hunger, why bother eating? At this point eating becomes lazy if you are results orientated.

As I said fat people are lazy so sitting around doing nothing is second nature to them.

If you're even moderately active you need an energy source to fuel your activities and that ideally needs to be food otherwise you will end up in a catabolic state much sooner than a sedentary person.

People still weight train, kickbox, run etc while water fasting.Your body is covered with usable energy, it was designed that way to survive famines.

And they often feel a lot weaker for it and have poor quality workouts.

As said no need to reinvent the wheel.

The only merit to these types of diet is as a short sharp kick to the system to start the weightloss process. But there are no shortcuts if pharmaceuticals aren't involved

Of course.  After no food for about 16 or more hours, their body goes into fasting ketosis.  After that, they'll just burn body fat, hunger and cravings start to disappear, then comes more energy, better sleep, and great mental clarity.

Long term doing this off and on, there is fat loss even without exercise.

The same can be achieved with nutritional ketosis via the keto diet, specially the carnivore diet.

Stupidity, only nature's resource which will never end...Fasting = Diet for idiots, who doesn't understand laws of human physique, nutrients etc. Point is that you can drop your weight fast by fasting, but you can't drop your bodyfat% with that speed. How this is possible? Muscle tissue weights ~20% more than fat tissue. If you are fasting, your metabolism doesn't stop needing protein, so it take it from your muscles, and that's why your weight is dropping fast. Why your metabolism need so much protein? All your brain functions are based on protein, so if you don't get protein from your diet, you lose muscle mass. There is no means to get around this fact. Why do you think that there is new way of dieting published by every other minute? Because burning fat is thing next to impossible to do easily. It always require lot of hard work, but idiots who try to find shortcuts are endless. Just about only way to burn fat for energy is ketogenic diet, and that will work with 100% certainty, if you do it by the book. No one knows will you survive from it, but you will lose body fat fast  ;D

Of course.  Ask conventional doctors and they'll tell you that type 2 diabetes is incurable, and only the symptoms can be treated using expensive diabetes medications.

The truth is there exist at least three proven cures for type 2 diabetes:

Gastric bypass surgery

A very, very restricted calorie diet

The keto diet, including the carnivore diet, which mimic fasting.

The Soviet Union also did tons of research and human testing of fasting to cure all kinds of diseases.  They even had fasting clinics run by medical doctors and nurses.  All of this kind of got forgotten after the end of the cold war.  The documents still exist, but haven't yet been translated from Russian and published.

Estimates for how much bodyfat can be burned a day are still all over the place from study to study. There is still so much we don't know about the human body.Even today the world is getting wrecked by a virus the world has no vaccine for.Sars a similar virus still no vaccine in 2 decades.Look at the results, clearly people are shifting way more bodyfat in a shorter timeframe than any other diet I've seen.

People who weighed 456 pounds at some point in their lives don't tend to live long.

Stressing the body in any extreme way has a knock on effect on health/lifespan and that includes extreme forms of fasting.

Ask guys who reached crazy low levels of body fat how long it took them to start feeling normal again. It's usually months, on occasions they're never the same again.

But much of the stress on the body is digestion. This basically shuts down on a water fast. And of course getting near ultra low bodyfat isn't going to be good for you.But the body is designed to exist in a fasted state, it's why we store bodyfat in the first place.

There's tons of posts from lifters who water fasted for weeks and lost no size, this was just the first I came across

https://www.reddit.com/r/fasting/comments/a6ki5e/before_and_after_a_21_day_fast_i_completed_in/

Also this study

https://www.physiology.org/doi/full/10.1152/japplphysiol.00907.2010

after 6 weeks the athletes saw a 10% increase in muscle capillary density indicating the muscles were growing, the fasted athletes increased their exercise intensity three times more than the carbohydrate-fed athletes (21% fasted vs 6% carb eating), the fasted athletes had a significant breakdown of intramuscular fat while the carbohydrate-fed athletes showed absolutely no breakdown of intramuscular fat.

I love fasting when I am not bbing

it works
do not snack at all (no carrots, no cucumbers) since it spikes insulin

do not drink BCAA, or coffee imho

just water and water only (add salt, and some potassium) that is it.

I've done it 3 different times for 72 hours each time but not for fat loss. I was interested in autophagy. It only takes 2-3 days to get in that state and more days after that has diminishing returns, they say, at least for autophagy.

It wasn't that difficult actually doing it. Fat loss isn't on my radar so I don't remember that but I do remember maintaining muscle and energy.

I have been on a carnivore diet since the beginning of January, lost 10lbs initially now eating as much as I like , not counted a single calories , still eating dairy and eggs.

Training going well, shape and size coming back fast after a lay off.
Its far from fasting Im eating more than I have in a long time

Why do I have trouble believing someone can survive on water, electrolytes and a few minerals and nothing else for an entire year. The longest known fast was in 1971, when a 27-year-old man survived on water and supplements for 382 days and shrank from 456 to 180 pounds. If you believe this then I guess it is possible. I only weigh 182 lbs tops. Technically based on this , if I fasted for a year I would disappear in about 6 or 7 months.  ;D

Eat less - Move more - Burn more calories than you consume.
Simple - No need to reinvent the Wheel.

This is so simple and makes a lot of sense. It should be easy to follow. Why do you suppose people keep coming up with elaborate diet plans that are often impossible to follow for any length of time? Of course, when people get so huge they can no longer move without help, burning calories becomes more difficult.

Another thing I do is eat when I get hungry and quit eating before I feel full, just comfortable. Regimented mealtimes are for kids who forget to eat. If it's mealtime and I don't feel hungry, I don't eat. Sometimes, I eat an apple or a handful of mixed nuts. On occasion, I'll crave a chocolate bar. When I do, I have one without any guilt. I won't use margarine on toast or anything else. It must be butter lightly spread or nothing. -Not a big soda pop person, but when I have one, it isn't diet pop. This. I fast for 5 days at a time two sometimes three times a year. I do it after periods where I've been eating a lot of shit, or where I've been mentally bogged down with stuff. I enjoy it and I like how I feel afterwards. Done it for ten years now. Don't be fooled by anyone claiming they have more energy and/or they can still workout. Thats bullshit. I enjoy the process but after day 3 I'm only going for a gentle walk  - there's no way I'd be able to go to the gym and workout. And why would I? If you're not eating, your recovery is non existent.

I think they come up with “New” diets for various reasons
1, Money to sell them & diet books
2, The New is Better Principle
3, Pandering to the wants (stupidity) of Women & Fat lazy people
4, It’s The Easy Diet People are looking for that Magical one

For Sure some diets have results.
Simple fact is Move more & eat less works - only Many don’t want to move more or do anything
Other than sit at work / home / Car & eat Then Complain about being / getting fat.

Many otherwise intelligent people have become stupid when it comes to eating & Being

4, It’s The Easy Diet People are looking for that Magical one

For Sure some diets have results.
Simple fact is Move more & eat less works - only Many don’t want to move more or do anything
Other than sit at work / home / Car & eat Then Complain about being / getting fat.

There are diet plans that work if people follow them and learn to eat differently from them. If however, they diet and then go back to eating the way that made them overweight in the first place, the diet is blamed. Overly strict diets are less likely to work because they are meant to be temporary. Weight Watchers is actually a good diet, if people follow it indefinitely which shouldn't be hard to do since nothing is forbidden, just the quantities are controlled so that you don't overeat, which is the basic problem most people have with food. Also, Weight Watchers offers a balanced diet. Most Diets that omit a food group, such as carbs or fats are not going to work in the long run because they cannot be sustained indefinitely.

Poor eating habits begin in childhood, IMO. My mom fixed just enough food for the three of us when I was growing up. A serving of vegetables, a portion of meat and usually a starch or a second vegetable. Desert was a rarity. There were no seconds or help yourself to as much as you want from serving bowls. The only exception was at holiday meals like Thanksgiving and then only if we had company. There was always fresh fruit in the house if you wanted a snack. Chips and such were reserved for weekend big barbecues with lots of people. My stepdad was a "meat and potatoes" person. He wouldn't eat casseroles of any kind. When we had pizza, we each ate two slices and maybe some salad.

A lot of parents today buy all manner of crap food and let their kids have at it. Families eat out much more and most restaurants give you way more food than you need. Take out is very common. Often meals are from fast food joints which have an array of bad choices and few good ones, diet-wise. Who the heck knows what is in that 'secret sauce' they smother your hamburger with. French fries are a mainstay at fast food restaurants. Try and get a healthy drink such as iced tea or real fruit juice, they are hard to find. Mostly all that is offered is a ginormous container of pop. I get water. The cup they give you is so small that you'd have to fill it three times to make one glass full.

That’s sensible steady eating - and it working fine for you, As it would for most Everyone.
Why is it they all want to lose Fat Fast - They Very likey eat their way to fatness of a period
Of time - Then suddenly must lose it Fast.
I bet there weren’t any fat people when we had to hunt for food simple rule of survival.
Many otherwise intelligent people have become stupid when it comes to eating & Being
Gluttonous- Then Complain they've got “Big Bones” “Slow metabolism” “All my family are Big”
Just Pathetic Excuses.

You are making me laugh. Over the years I've heard all those excuses and more. It is utter nonsense. Sure there are different body types and we have different individual genetic makeups. But, being a mesomorph doesn't mean someone is automatically overweight, anymore than being an ectomorph guarantees you can eat all you want and never get fat. If a person is a mesomorph, they have a head start on developing a muscular physique, but they still need to exercise to achieve it.

In fact there is far more greater difference between fat and muscle tissue than 20%. Just reading article about F1 drivers from those times, where weight of the driver was one mean to get betteri lap times. Doctor of that series says that muscle weights 4 times more than same amount of fat. Found a picture about this, there is pound of meat and pound of fat:

So if you diet make you loss weight fast, speed of the weight loss comes from losing that red stuff, so you don't notice it so easily by the mirror, but in the scale you see miraculous weight loss. But on the other hand, that red stuff is just about only organ in your body, which even can use that yellow stuff as energy, so you will be screwed because you loss the means which could help you to loss that fat  ;D

For how long do you fast?

I have tried every method of fasting for all different reasons:

for feeling good and having the most energy I recommend fasting from 9pm to 12pm -  16-18 hour fast. of course I was not working out in the AM, I would have 1 cup of coffee on an empty stomach middle morning and I felt amazing.  So productive.  its simple to do, lunch tastes amazing and you can crush your day before noon. I am in sales so being productive/always "on" is key for me.

I would wait before having coffee... (black) or strong green tea

for fat loss - you will want to go longer
I would fast Thursday 9pm through Saturday AM (36 hour fast) do it 1x per week
this time -

for mental and a reset and testing yourself, I have gone as long as 72 hours. it was fun in a sick twisted way  ;D  this is when i recommenced zero coffee and zero gum.  test your will power

also fasting you need to work up to it, if you are in good shape, but want more energy and want to trim down, I would recommend doing a 16-18 hour fast daily.

also if fat loss is your goal - stop snacking during the day - it spikes blood sugars. i would eat 2-3 times from 12pm to 9pm. do not snack between meals

I was skeptical before I tried it but, I love to fast

Sex sucks when you are fasting -  ??? eat a muffin before you go to pound town  ;D

I love fasting but any extended fast (24h+) means that I get diarrhea after my first meal.  I'm guessing the food intake triggers bile release into the intestines but with no food substrate to absorb it, it goes right into the toilet.

Haven't found a good way to get around this, just something to be aware of for me

I have been on a carnivore diet since the beginning of January, lost 10lbs initially now eating as much as I like , not counted a single calories , still eating dairy and eggs.

Training going well, shape and size coming back fast after a lay off.
Its far from fasting Im eating more than I have in a long time

Good for you.  Sounds like you are doing this right.

It's far from fasting because you are instead feasting.  You are probably eating only when you are hungry, and you eat as much as you want until you are full.

At the same time, although it's not fasting, it is very much like fasting because you are probably going into nutritional ketosis which is much like fasting ketosis, with almost all the benefits of fasting without the side effects and dangers of fasting.

Like fasting, you are probably going 12, 16, even 24 hours without eating simply because you are not hungry.  You are not hungry because you are eating until you are full, and because you are satiated and well nurtured.  That's what happens when you eat nutritionally dense, easily absorbed foods such as fatty red meat, egg yolks, fatty fish, full fat dairy, etc.

When you eat high fat low carb right, then real/natural hunger comes back.  Real/natural hunger happens every 12 to 24 hours.

Good job!

In my opinion, water fasts longer than 24 hours should be done only under medical supervision, and not frequently.  Extended water fasts can be dangerous, especially when done frequently.

A ketogenic diet is safe and has many of the same benefits, without the risks.

Autophagy and scars. There are anecdotal personal accounts of scars healing discussed on forums where people examine autophagy.

The general idea, whether proven or not:

"This is when the body goes into a self regulating machine and starts to eat up damaged cells, tissues, or scars. This process allows the body to go into a serious detoxification mode."

I bet that works much better when breaking the fast with fatty red meat, bone broth, collagen, and egg yolks, eating lots of these when not fasting.  The body needs the highest quality, best absorbed materials in order to repair and rebuild itself properly.

LOL...comparing starvation because of famine to voluntary, frequent, long water fasts for health benefits.

Oh yeah, I forgot that during the great depression people stopped eating and as a result they all got healthier, stronger, more energetic, mentally sharper, and malnourished kids got taller.  None of them got seriously ill, or died due to starvation.  My bad.   ::)

Medical supervision during voluntary, frequent, long water fasts for health benefits may not be necessary for some individuals, but it's advisable for early detection and treatment of anemia, weakened immune system, liver and kidney problems, irregular heartbeat, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, muscle breakdown, and many other complications.

Still the most effective diet for Europeans created by SS trainers 1940 -1945:

- 6am: 2 dry biscuits & chicory coffee

- 1pm: cabage or potato soup

- 6pm:  dry corn bread

+ 8-10 hours of Iron Cross fit

But that's nothing compared to the way, which that fasting burn your muscle mass. On the other hand, exactly what do you think is using that fat for energy? Only organ in your body which is even in theory is able to burn fat for energy, are your muscles, so there is tiny little disharmony in there. Do you find it?

You see, one of the hardest thing in human metabolism is turn the body fat to energy.  Using meat to energy is far more easy, so if you are fasting, first to go is your muscles, and then when there is nothing else left, goes your fat. That's ok if you are some 80 lb internet celebrity, but if you are a lifter, I don't think you want to loose all that muscle mass earned by lot of hard work.. ;D

I've done a week with no food....

Days one and two easy, no probs

Day 3 hungry

Day 4 starving can only think about food, low energy

Day 5 same as above

Day 6 less hungry able to function better

Day 7 same as above

I don't like it, it's a bit extreme....

Imo, fasting with a vegetable soup no carbs very low fat is the best method always with electrolytes obviously.

Exactly. It's always the lazy fat fucks thinking their is some kinda secret short cut they just haven't discovered yet.

You didn't become fat overnight and you're not gonna lose it overnight. Also fatsos doing extreme diets nearly always falter and end up fatter than when they started.
very true

Exactly what I've been talking about,  you lose no muscle,  especially if you do 2-3 day fasts a week like myself.  Nothing but benefits, increased stem cell production, growth hormone production, strengthens immune system, autophagy. It's the ultimate bio-hack.

Real life example

Old buddy of mine, former professional tennis player, nowadays a preacher. 4 weeks water fast (the real kind)

From 206 lbs to 160. Real discipline if you ask me. I never tried it. Did it during the month of february
