Apparently they paid $250,000 per person to become a part of the tour themselves.
-
What a way to go...trapped in a confined space miles underwater.
:-[
-
When they went missing, I would guess 60 minutes would be the top amount of time for a rescue window. Assuming that the vehicle was still intact and not leaking.

This story is weird to me so far...so something like maybe 4-8 paid paid $250K each [$1-2M in total revenue for the tourist submarine company], and they didn't have absolute state-of-the-art communication technology to prevent this?
Or does such technology just not exist?
But whatever - they wanted to see an underwater graveyard, and got their wish in a roundabout way.

Seriously.
The amount of panic they passengers must have or be going through once they lost communication with the surface must have been horrific. It would have to seem like such a simple solution; I’m sure they were all thinking is we just have to go up and we can be going home.

It sounds like the small party of missing people are all very wealthy people who didn't expect anything to go wrong. Assuming they didn't die instantly, I'm not sure if they'd be aware of the risks they are facing [exact timeline and so on].
Flexacon, are you familiar with this man? When I saw "British", I immediately thought of you and Henda, joswift, illuminati, Bob Hoskins, etc:

Yes Matt, I do know Hamish. He is a neighbour of mine, but for the past few years he's been spending most of his time in Dubai.
There is a crew member on board and that person should know how many days oxygen they have. Hopefully something interesting/grisly happens onboard as this could make for an interesting movie.

Maybe it’s all a ruse.
I found this old story..

i bet they tried to navigate the submarine inside the wreckage and it collapsed on them......

$250,000 to die in this:
-
I briefly knew an officer on board the USS Scorpion. For personal reasons I am very familiar with the date of its demise. This was a great loss to the families of those men and I can still recall the pain of that reality on one of those family members over 5 decades later. :-[

I knew it!
Because UK people know other UK people!
Illuminati trained with Bib Hoskins, for example. :) 8)
We have some Incredible numbers on the board here.
Regarding this tragedy...I consider myself to very an empathetic person...but...not in this case.

When is the first fatality in the Space Tourism industry ?
Anyone want to chase a tornado on a tour?

I reckon they're absolutely fucked. Obviously, rescuers would need to find a precise location in order to try to physically recover it. It's not transmitting that data any more. Plus, with the vessel being at something like 12,000 feet, how the hell would they get that back up to the surface?
I doubt any ROV used in Oil and Gas can go that deep, and it probably wouldn't have the capabilities to recover a submersible. Saturation divers can't go anywhere near that depth, so any rescue must be hinged upon having a capable rescue submarine getting down there within the ridiculously small timeframe they have left. Hopefully the thing just got crushed under pressure and they died a quick death. Would be shit to be just sat there in your tomb, waiting to run out of air, lol.
I'd love to see what this company's risk assessment and CASEVAC plan looked like. You'd assume they had more in place than 'let's just take down extra air and supplies'.
Edit: This is interesting. I was curious to see what we have in place for situations where our military subs run into issues. Our NATO equipment can't get near those depths. The Submarine Rescue Vehicle can reach max depths of around 2000 feet. Unless they're just bobbing around somewhere, which is extremely unlikely, they are dead.

Horrible way to go.
-
It also takes hours to safely bring it back to the surface even if they did manage to find it. The water pressure is immense at that depth.
-
I'm pretty sure no one is actually allowed to enter or touch the wreckage.
Unless the sub sprung a leak I'm presuming they'll suffocate, imagine the panic then slowly going out like when Cohaagen turned off the oxygen in total recall.
i bet they tried to navigate the submarine inside the wreckage and it collapsed on them......
-
Ironic or what?
-
Soon they'll add tourist tours where you travel via Submarine to check the wreckage of the old Titanic Tourist Submarine...
Hope they got snatched by aliens and are safe somewhere, but not very likely.

I'm willing to be a passenger but only if you promise to donate my organs in the event of another tragedy. I need to make sure that my heart will go on.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

Evidently the owner/inventor is on board this thing as the pilot and then some French explorer as the “guide”. Only three paying passengers. Reports from previous customers says the thing surprised them with how shoddy it seemed. I’d imagine they sprung a leak and the thing just broke up and they’re dead. No way you’re finding that thing in 96 hours with no radar, gps or any other communication.

$250,000 to die in this:
You people do this stupid shit....base jumping, selfies on climbs, motorcycle stunts.... You won't find any soul brotha's on any of these rickety subs. We've only been on military submarines...and the black folks that have commanded them went nowhere near any fucking icebergs or whales
Should have got these guys to handle that sub if they were going to use it. They would have shook down that thing first

Leon. "No, its fucking stupid."

SpaceShip 2 but it was a test accident...not only that the surviver was the first person to survive a space accident to begin with.....not Columbia or Challenger. Its a clear example of privatized and government built

yea, rapid decompression or a fire onboard. Whatever happenned must have been horrible. I think that they clearly ignored some safety protocols. That submarine looks like trash and they are using a fucking playstation controller to run it.

Two passengers are a billionaire with his son. What a cruel joke on the wife. Husband is gone and she gets all the money but loses her kid in the process. Life is fucked at times.

Would everyone feel better if these people died while driving a Bentley?

They aren't sitting anywhere waiting for discovery
They lost contact only 1/3rd of the way down - indicating immediate explosive decompression

Yeah, but think about the view they got for $250,000 in that cramped, fart-filled submarine, in the few moments hey had before they imploded/died.
Now compare that to the lousy view an old army friend of mine got at a hotel in Sa Pa, Vietnam for $20 a night:
I guess it's true what they say - you get what you pay for!
Wait.

Why wouldn't they? Those controllers had $millions spent on them on research, development and testing. They are incredibly reliable, intuitive and user friendly.
They are so good that even US Navy subs and Russian tanks use these types of controllers.

Do you know if there is a current consensus on whether or not they are dead or alive?
-
The water pressure at the depth that submersible was at is several tons per square inch. If that submersible had a leak, it would have imploded almost instantaneously, killing everyone within milliseconds. It would have been like an explosion. These people are most certainly dead now.
-
Do you know if there is a current consensus on whether or not they are dead or alive?
Matt, the consensus is guarded. Until the time expires on the oxygen they will assume they are alive. They just don't know.

Now they’re saying that the search teams are picking up banging noises near the surface and think it’s possibly to do with the sub. The poor families, giving them hope. Shit, even if they are floating near the surface, if they don’t find them they run out of air on Thursday best case.

Just my opinion based on the available data, Dave
That said, those reports earlier today of banging - if correct and spaced at the recognised maritime SOS intervals of every half hour and on the hour - might provide something to prove me wrong
BUT
If that is the case, what kind of shit-pot contraption wouldn't have an SOS surface pinger so they can be located? They fit them to watches, FFS!

Yeah, no hatches to open - they are bolted in... just let that sink in... (pun unintended)
-
Those people are DEAD.
If I’m wrong, well, great, but … I don’t think I am.
Any mechanism to bring them to the surface would have engaged before now, and if they are bobbing on the surface, they haven’t yet been located?!
C’mon.
Keep trying but I think everyone knows the deal.

Bingo.
No emergency beacon. No communication of any sort. It imploded. Nobody knew anything. Perhaps a very brief, extremely high pressure leak and then Nothing.

I guess when we all wake up tomorrow and there’s no news, they’re for sure dead? Sucks that the family has to hold out hope for 96 hours.
I wonder if any of them killed any of the other passengers to save oxygen?

I feel the same. I have no feelings either way. It's like if someone loved to swim with sharks.. paid great money to swim with sharks and one day one killed him... $250K to go down to the Titanic.. and for what? Bragging rights? They knew the risks.. I'll save my empathy for the 37 people in Paris and 4 critically injured, not those on the submarine, though I do hope for a happy ending.

Yes, the philosopher Schopenhauer said that many rich would be better off poor as want would give them something to do.
That’s said, I doubt they thought this was extremely risky. They probably viewed it as going on a cruise.
Arguably, redistributing their wealth would be the charitable thing to do :D

Was reading an article about a passenger last year. He said they made it clear it was very risky. Had to sign at least 3 waivers saying this could result in death. He said when he kissed his wife goodbye he knew it might be his last time seeing her. So I think they knew it was extremely risky but rationalized the risk which is human nature as "It won't happen to me". But it did.

I looked into it a bit and turns out you can get one of these certified luxury subs for $15m

That carries 2 people. The pilot and a passenger. Probably didn't have a company available that would offer it. It sure looks a lot more comfortable than the other one though

Few days before this happened there was a migrant boat with 500 passengers that disappeared at sea. 100 were kids. Did it even make mainstream news?

I feel bad for the 19 year old son, as he’s young enough to be swayed by his fathers influence and also too young to fully realize death. At least in my opinion, I didn’t really have the death realization until my mid/late 20’s.

What a crushing loss.
But…we can all rest better knowing the company was very “diverse”, and made it their goal to not hire middle aged white males that had experience in the submarine business. Even fired the one 50 year old white guy that said the design was dangerously flawed. Got woke, sub broke.

The submersible is in fine shape and when it's found can be put back in service.
After a thorough cleaning.

This guy Hamish had made a previous trip (in a really good submersible) to the bottom of the 32,000 foot deep Mariana Trench, the deepest on Earth.
Based on that he probably though this 12,000 foot dive was a piece of cake.

Thank you for saying this, brother Coach. I agree. I have been praying all day for them and I really hope they are working together as a team and supporting each other down there. After all, they're all in the same boat.

Bingo.
No emergency beacon. No communication of any sort. It imploded. Nobody knew anything. Perhaps a very brief, extremely high pressure leak and then Nothing.
PIP Pressurized in Peace.
Is this even possible? If there was an opening in the submersible, that such a high pressure can make it explode?

It sucks. But we don’t know how they died. And there are people who die in worse ways, not as a result of their own choices every single day and we don’t care.
On my way to the work this morning the radio was lamenting this tradegy, meanwhile people wanted to kill the homeless guy who ran across the street during traffic…..
We pick and choose who we feel bad for based on what reasons?

Realistically wouldn’t it seem like these guys would have probably froze to death before they lost oxygen?
If they lost power what would have been the heat source, what would the water temperature be at that depth?

I wonder how quickly it smashes in on itself. Has anyone ever put a camera in one of these things and just sunk it until it squished in on itself?
Yeah, debris field found of floating bits and the stuff on the bottom of the sea floor points to them being gone. Probably happened days ago when they lost communication.

- they faked their deaths because they are now inducted into the secret cabal that rules the world
- being held hostage
- giant squid holding them down
And these are grown people believing this shit.

Amazing he didn't want to hire white Navy veterans with submarine experience to be the captain of his submarine. He wanted a diversity hire so he could be inspired. He also threw in the sub was controlled by a video game controller that costs $30 bucks. What could go wrong? I'm sure the liberal is furiously spinning the reason for the failure. Bet he is blaming the submarine manufacturer. Could have been operator errors?

Most likely deep sea currents pushed into the Titanic and it became stuck since they did hear knocking noises 2 days ago. 96 hours are up.

Yep - and even though they were only 1/3 of the way down, seawater at that depth is about 150 bar already - so death was mercifully quick (i.e. instantaneous) - my math is shaky, but it's about the equivalent (very) roughly of what? Maybe 10 tonnes of TNT (inverted)?

The air auto-ignites and an explosion follows the initial rapid implosion. Large blobs of fat (that would be humans) incinerate and are turned to ash and dust quicker than you can blink your eye.

Bringing up the personal belongings of the dead is tantamount to grave robbery.

Six-thousand pounds PSI.
IMPLOSION. INSTANT.

God, I'm not actually sure what formulas we'd need to do that as, to my mind, one is a unit of pressure (bars) and one is a unit of energy released (TNT equivalent). TNT releases 4.18 billion joules of energy per ton. So, 10 tons of TNT is 41.8 gigajoules. The external pressure at the depth the sub was at is around 400 atmospheres (405.3 bars). Are you wondering what the energy release in joules from an implosion under that pressure would be? I'd have to dig out textbooks or summon someone like Howard the Cuck, Overload, or AVXO, I think. I should note, maybe I've just misunderstood your question, lol. I've got the gay Covid again and it is 2.a.m here, so if I sound like a spaz, that's my excuse!

Seems newsworthy, so why keep this from the public other than to control the news cycle.
https://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-navy-detected-titan-sub-implosion-days-ago-6844cb12
A top secret military acoustic detection system designed to spot enemy submarines first heard what the U.S. Navy suspected was the Titan submersible implosion hours after the submersible began its voyage, officials involved in the search said.
The Navy began listening for the Titan almost as soon as the sub lost communications, according to a U.S. defense official. Shortly after the submersible’s disappearance Sunday, the U.S. system detected what it suspected was the sound of an implosion near the debris site discovered Thursday and reported its findings to the Coast Guard commander on site, U.S. defense officials said.
While the Navy couldn’t say definitively the sound came from the Titan, the discovery played a role in narrowing the scope of the search for the vessel before its debris was discovered Thursday, the officials said.

Haha, I wasn't sure exactly what you meant by inverted either, but far be it from me to question another esteemed member of Team Horsecock. I was thinking more today about peak overpressure from a blast wave, which we can measure in terms of psi, but if these guys were indeed exposed to approximately 6,000 psi, I can’t think of anything that even comes close. I think you could use the Friedlander equation to figure out how much TNT you'd need to give you a blast wave pressure of the same amount, but the numbers are so ridiculous that it puts it into the hypothetical nuke category.

Yeah, hence my 1% of a kiloton madness! Not even that, my initial 'calcs' such as they were were based on them being 1/3 down the water column (2100psi) but at the bottom and ~6000 psi*.... But you're onto something with the nuke thing - I'm off to Google those pressures created inside the compression chamber at initiation....
...
...
*Gahd! Just try to imagine that for a moment - gory I know, but you'd literally cease to be within what - <500ms...?!?!

All things considered, it's actually a pretty decent way to go!
Yeah, I think in trying to find a comparable amount of psi generated from an explosive blast wave, you're into insane nuke territory, but to the original speculation of what the energy release in joules from the implosion might be, a rocket scientist has now estimated the volume of the sub and calculated it all on the basis of energy being force times distance. It was roughly the equivalent of 50 kg of TNT going off.
-
So what would happen to the bodies at this depth?
I'm guessing if it sprung a leak/hole it would have weakened the ship so quickly the water outside would have torn into it and pushed it apart like paper. Would the vessel have exploded too?

Bodies pretty much disintegrated. There might be a remnant of a dense bone (petrous bone) fragment or 100.
Vessel imploded and then exploded from the heat created by the implosion. Oxygen combusts nicely.

The bodies would be vaporized and the air would ignite during the implosion.
Earth has one atmosphere pressure.
Venus has about 90 atmospheres pressure, same as a car crusher.
At the depth of the Titanic it is about 400 atmospheres pressure. So the bodies would be subjected to an instantaneous pressure of about 5 times that of a hydraulic car crusher.
Rough estimate, you get the point.

I hope no fish were injured during the implosion... :)

Steam boilers have to be xrayed/ultrasounded for cracks every so often...
I would surmise that submersibles would be the same...Although the pressure is inward rather than ourward.

The rapid compression from the implosion produced temperatures high enough to ignite the gas in the vessel. Implosion followed by explosion.

"The air inside a sub has a fairly high concentration of hydrocarbon vapors. When the hull collapses it behaves like a very large piston on a very large Diesel engine. The air auto-ignites and an explosion follows the initial rapid implosion Sounds gruesome but as a submariner I always wished for a quick hull-collapse death over a lengthy one like some of the crew on Kursk endured."
John Jones, a former member of the US Navy Submarine Force, added: "Implosion events occur within milliseconds, far too quickly for the human brain to comprehend."

There are only ten vehicles in the world that can go 4000 meters or deeper and all of them are certified except Titan.
The submarine was made out of carbon fiber, which is fine for many applications, but not for subs. over use, the constant compression and de-compression can cause de-lamination. Where the carbon fibers and resin become separated.
Aircraft fuselage experience the same compression and de-compression, but the pressure differences are minor compared to what a sub experiences.
This was a highly experimental sub and should have been treated as such with no passengers.
The design was fundamentally flawed from an engineering standpoint.
They flatly refused to get any form of certification and the reason is simple. This sub could never achieve certification. They cut every corner they could.

Carbon Fiber.... strong and light.. MotoGP and World Superbike type rims,,, Formula 1.. lotsa parts... not meant to be re-used after being stressed... especially F1 stuff... even magnesium motorcycle rims aren't meant for the long haul... the repeated compression and decompression stresses on the sub would have greatly diminished it's strength ... crunch

I have significant experience with carbon fiber and the more you work with it the more you like it. For all the applications you mentioned and in particular aerospace.
This particular application I think was wrong and the design was wrong too. I don't even think they wrapped it correctly.
The most common sub design for this application involves a titanium sphere which is two inches thick. Being a sphere, there are no stress concentrations, basically the stress is evenly distributed. Equally important the material is homogeneous all the way through. With carbon fiber there are two materials, carbon fibers, and resin. Similar to how fiber glass is made, but instead of glass fibers, it's carbon fibers.
The whole design of this sub was just piss poor engineering. The sad part is none of these people had enough knowledge to even question the design.

One of the passengers was a billionaire aviation company owner which made custom boeing parts. I'm sure he had some experts on carbon fibre in his company. The other was a billionaire former French Navy captain. Both were veterans of various expeditions involving submarine deep dives, space rockets and various other maritime adventures. They both had the money and I'm sure had the contacts to do their due diligence on this if they had wanted to.

Flex I’m not debating the merits of the investors/passengers. That said do you disagree that this was a poorly engineered craft, especially when compared to the technology available?
One item I read stated that submarines, or these types of vessels, should be routinely dismantled for inspection to search for wear and tear and this one had never had that process done. If this is true, wouldn’t that fact alone be considered poor engineering?
-

My point was more that for whatever reason they obviously didn't bother to do their due diligence on this submarine and company. So their lack of expert knowledge regarding the design and build isn't really a great excuse for them getting onboard that sub.
Basically they should have known enough just from looking at it for their spider senses to start tingling.

This is exactly my point. The fact that this sub wasn't certified was a HUGE red flag for many passengers that decided to not go on board. And the reason it wasn't certified was there was no way it would pass.
The design was severely flawed. You have titanium bonded to carbon fiber. Each of those materials compress at different rates when put under the same pressure. That bonded joint is a severe weak spot. Has the joining process alone been severely tested in a lab with data showing it can withstand the stress it would be under. Of course not.
In no way were they following procedures from aerospace. If they were, paying passengers would not have been allowed on board. They would have had to get a type certification AND a production certification. I think this incident will lead to that type of process.
-
lol as I understand this thing was glued together... the end domes where glued to the center tube.

Yeah, this
I read that they used an audio system to warn them of this happening so that they'd have time to abort and resurface during an individual dive, but how could that possibly take into consideration the aggregation of very very minor events over multiple dives into something much more catastrophic?? It beggars belief...

On a side note, these names 'Stockton' 'Hamish' just reek of wealth and arrogance.

I don't see the fascination of viewing the wreck at all. When Estonia sank a couple of divers went down to film and were then convicted in court. After that I think they poured concrete on it, concrete coffin.

People are fascinated by the Titanic just look at how many people saw the movie. It was such a preventable disaster and maybe that's the fascination. The captain had a telegraph that he was heading into ice bergs on a dark new moon night were icebergs would not be visible. And he exercised terrible judgement and a steamed right into the iceberg field. It's just such a cautionary tale of what not to do.

Funny you should say that - I got trapped under a burning car once (long story) and developed wicked claustrophobia over night. I've even ripped clothes off in a panic LOL! But the worst trigger for me is watching those spelunking videos where people wriggle into small muddy holes where they can't back up or even raise their arms!!!.... Christ, it makes me shudder just typing that... :-X :-X

My girlfriend and I were driving to Dryden recently, going 110km [68 miles] per hour, and I noticed she wasn't wearing a seat belt.
She claimed claustrophobia.
Tell me she's full of shit?

When the hell did you get a girlfriend? I thought you were done with women?
She's a Jew, isn't she?

All these people coming forward eager to tell how they knew the sub was a disaster waiting to happen. They probably just couldn't fit it into their schedule but in retrospect they're experts on submarine safety.

Debris and presumed human remains from the Titan submersible have been recovered and returned to land, the U.S. Coast Guard announced Wednesday, nearly a week after a search-and-rescue operation ended and the vessel’s five passengers were presumed dead.

Father and son who turned down seats on the Titan sub weeks before due to safety concerns about the structure. A twenty year old could see this was a faulty design.
More like payload issues.

No...I can send you her Facebook page.
She just had a Crack baby. ::)
What kind of cu** goes through a full pregnancy while smoking Crack?
As for my new girlfriend:
She's ****ing hot.
She's ****ing sexy.
I need to do a new Matt C summer cycle/thread, and post her pics.

That's great to hear Matt. Yes a summer cycle and thread sounds like a good idea although you're leaving it a bit late!
Regarding pics of the gf maybe wait to post until after you break up (if that happens) For now all we need is a pic of her nose from the side.

Matt, PM me a photo of your new GF. Remember, I was the one who tried to talk you into dating again, so you owe me. I was really hoping it was the junkie, but I'm still pumped.
-
matt please don't do a summer cycle thread
the last one made Hankins bullshit seem readable and was more an insight into your own neurosis than anything else.
Spare us this please

Will you increase the calories for your summer cycle?

Will you increase the calories for your summer cycle?
Yes, but...no, not really.
It has not been easy.
I probably hit 135g protein a day, and that's trying to be conscience of increased protein.
I don't know...I don't want to waste the gear if I can't eat...
Minor transformation so far, below. I took time off training / trained for strength in the Winter/Spring. Strength is as high as ever, but I lost mass from going off Anadrol + doing lower reps + time off training.
I'm just over the 190-lb mark, and would like to stay under 200-lb now. Since I was 205-lb peak muscular weight last summer, to be 195-lb and leaner would be nice.
But I swear, it pains me to even reach the 135g daily protein mark. It's work, anyway.
Training is fine. As usual, my nutrition is sub-par.
Pics taken nine days apart, both this month, June 2023:

MattBWC do you have club foot? Or maybe you just need new trainers as the sole on the left side of your left foot looks to have worn away.
Excellent 9 day pic transformation though. Remember I told you about adding some great tasting protein bars or a pre mixed milk protein drinks. Requires minimal effort, no cooking or cleaning needed for extra calories and protein. Perfect for lazy b*stards like us.
Start up the new thread otherwise I'm gonna have to do it for you

Implosion Titan Oceangate How it Happened | Submersible Submarine Parts
entrance is secured by manpower instead of machine power. that's has to be like a single man trying to secure tires by hand on an 18 wheeler semi or F1 car. what could go wrong long term?
the guy in the video didn't even use body weight, just arms to tighten the hatch.

It shouldn't be difficult to get over 135g of protein especially if you are at home all the time and can cook and eat whenever you want. Maybe you're eating too many carbs/fats making you full? If I eat just chicken breast or tilapia I'm quickly hungry again in an hour or two.

i struggle to get even 100 grams of protein , probably of lot less

MattC definitely has a thicker middle back/traps than bhanks. Neither dude has much in the way of lats but Matt absolutely has a better back than hanky. Matt also has back detail, which for all his leanness, hanky lacks.
Funny how this thread went from guys dying on a Lego submarine to Matt's new jewish girlfriend to bhanky. I can hear Elton John singing "Circle of Life" right now...

They're picking up parts of the sub off the ocean floor. I think they figured out what happened. Nobody is looking for survivors.

So they're saying we should build submarines out of the stuff they make hydraulic presses from..?
And I love the "don't try this at home" disclaimer! ;D

I spent some time reading the comments for that clip: apparently a hydraulic press like that costs around $600. Anyone with space at home can crush.

OceanGate's former finance director said she quit when Stockton Rush asked her to be the Titanic submersible's chief pilot after firing the original one for raising safety issues
by Matthew Loh
Soon after Lochridge was fired, Rush asked the finance director to fill in for the pilot, she told Taub.
"It freaked me out that he would want me to be head pilot, since my background is in accounting," she told the New Yorker.
She said she "did not trust" Rush because Lochridge was no longer working at OceanGate and quit her job as soon as she found a new role elsewhere, Taub reported.
The former director added that some of OceanGate's engineers were teenagers when they worked for the company, while others were in their early twenties, the New Yorker reported.
