Pro card gets cooked
« on: October 23, 2006, 09:31:57 PM »
As we heard on the radio show tonight, Cook is leaving BBing for UFC fighting.

This makes me wonder- If his pro card was indeed a gift (as many have asserted it was), does this clearly show that giving pro cards to marketable guys who have "earned it", although they don't have the most impressive physique onstage, is a TERRIBLE IDEA?

Cook had looks, a Weider contract, and was crowned a pro when he might not have earned it.  And what happened?  He didn't succeed at all as a pro, and moved on.  This means a pro card that COULD have gone to a guy with potential to make a mark as a pro, did not.

Rewarding loyalty and basing pro card decisions on marketing potential - bad idea?

SHeavys 04 Nationals

1.Chris Cook- overall winner
2.Bill Wilmore
3.Marcus Haley
4.Jerome Ferguson
5.Omar Deckard
6.Rich Piana

Decent lineup, I wouldnt say it was a gift.. he may have looked like shite recently but he compared well against the above company.

cooked as in, wasted.  his pro card could have gone to a superior athlete, and we'd have one more good pro today.

I dont think there is a shortage of good pros or pros period. If anything maybe there are too many pros :-\

Jerome Fergusson. The only guy on earth that can wear full body spandex yearound and not be questioned. Been around forever and deserved it 100 times more than genetically defficient Chris Cook.

they're giving out pro cards to every class winner at the nationals, two cards at the USA, one at Team Universe, North American, Masters Nationals.    there's no shortage of amatuers turning pro

I think the guy had marketing AND BBing potential. His physique speaks for itself. Reminds me of Cutler. He wasn't the best early on, and now look where he is.

Would be good to give a pro card to, say, the 2nd or 3rd guy at the Nationals or whatever, if they have that marketable look (e.g. Cutler, Cook, Draper, Arnold) with a decent body. However, that won't happen because obviously it's bias. BBing needs more guys with looks to be on the mags and become posterchildren.

I know that normally I'm all about the marketing.  But hearing that last night, I just had to scratch my head and think about recent pros, many who have been given pro cards based upon loyalty. Who was the guy who got robbed recently (he was a mayhem sweetheart), then won his card the next go-round when many had him fifth?

240,

Cook beat those other guys fair and square. If they were any better than Cook and should have gotten their pro card at that show, would it really have made a difference? Look at the competition. It's more like a line at a movie theater: Wilmore, who got his pro card the following year; Haley, who got his card 2 years later, and Deckard, who got his card this year. None of whom will ever accomplish anything of significance in this game.

Cook had the gene's from the front, needed harder ham's and more complete back to be top placer, but is was very clear by his showing's that he didn't want to take it to the full limit on what is needed to be freaky in this game.

If the athlete really was superior he would have beaten Cook regardless.
