If posing suits have become smaller it is pretty clear that's because bodybuilder themselves have been pushing the boundaries through time and they love to wear them small. Let's not act like bodybuilding is not inherently sexual in nature.

Easy. My experience in bodybuilding tells me that the great majority of bodybuilders and bodybuilding audiences are straight (although some are definitely bisexual and gay). So autoerotic is going on for sure, homoerotic is going on (your statement that all spectators at bodybuilding shows can be considered to be “worshipping muscle” is not really wrong, well except for family and friends who get dragged to the shows kicking and screaming). But homosexuality is not going on. I mean generally.

Some of us have said it before but it is always good to remember it. The Greek body ideal was conceptualised by homosexual men in ancient Greece which is what bodybuilding celebrates: muscularity as a sign of male beauty, strength and sexual attractiveness. This is why people say bodybuilding is gay apart from the evident strong homoerotic appeal in body exhibition.

Bodybuilding doesn't speak to the senses of heterosexual men because this activity is about getting almost naked to flaunt their enhanced secondary sex traits, sex traits heterosexual men are not attracted to. Homosexual men, are attracted to the male figure so bodybuilding speaks directly to homosexuality and as a consequence lots of bodybuilders are gay and lots of fans are gay. Not some; many.

This is one of the reasons why the industry is oversensitive when it comes to homosexual appeal. This is not to say there aren't heterosexual men in bodybuilding, but underestimating the number of gay men in bodybuilding both as bodybuilders and fans is at the very least naive.

Regarding your debate above, I’m inclined to side with you mph.  It’s been my experience that when it comes to “competitive” bodybuilding (and I’m not talking about gym rats and guys working out and building muscles in the gym) at the contest level that when it comes to contestants the percentage of gay bodybuilders is really not any different than the overall general population percentage.  That is if you’ve got 100 male bodybuilder contestants somewhere between 3 and 10 of them are going to be gay and the other 90 to 97 are going to be straight.  

Ditto the folks in the audience.  Frankly I think the bodybuilding contest industry is missing the boat by NOT appealing to the LGBT community.   I’ve never seen any contest, local, state, or whatever reach out to the LGBT community except one:  the Arnold Classic in Columbus.  They used to advertise the whole expo and contest in the Ohio LGBT magazine.  And they would get thousands of people to show up!

Where I think you find a larger proportion of gays are in the contest peripheral jobs, such as photographers (our Ron is an exception), stage managers, promoter’s assistants, tan sprayers, and most of all, judges.  I’ve seen judges that couldn’t have straight bone in their body.

But the biggest proportion of gays in bodybuilding are the fans on the social media.  That has to be where they get these thousands or tens of thousands of followers on YouTube, tumblr, Instagram, etc.

Thanks for supporting the argument. But I think your 3 to 10 percent is low. I can usually count that percent at competitions just based on the known or obvious. I would go 12 to 16 percent, especially if you include participants in g4p who show enthusiasm in those endeavors. But that’s still a way minority and may be in line with the general population if you include experimenters and occasionals in the overall population.

It seems like every time I've come to this site in the last few days, he's either been the last poster in the "Weird Joe Weider Pic" thread or this one.  Just out of curiosity, i checked the "schmoe" thread and he's somehow restrained himself from posting in that one for a little over two weeks.

All I'm saying is that there are many gay men in bodybuilding. It's natural given that bodybuilding is about glorifying the male form, the epitome of sexiness of the male body.
