Not true dude.  Most of those guys are in top shape and extremely strong.

YA, they all look in good shape by me. One thing I'll say is bigger dudes need more oxygen, it aint funny in
toxic environments. I know. A very strong wiry medium size guy would be tops IMO.
Massive guys and breathing apparatus just are not a great mix IME.

I agree.  The same goes for police.  Most guys (esp SWAT guys) are not massive.  They are big and fit but they have endurance and any more mass would be a hindrance.  They need to run, wrestle grapple.  The firefighters need to move, crawl, carry, etc.

I start the fire academy in January and I am running everyday for endurance.  I do stadium bleachers at least once a week.  with weights I am training mostly for functional strength.  I do a lot of dead lifts, pull ups, clean and press, squats, lunges, rows for back strength.  You definately don't want to be huge because it will take away from your endurance and flexibilty could potentially get you out of a sticky situation.  I am also starting yoga in a week.

Ya know what wouldnt hurt? Being in on some construction Demolition of standing buildings if you dont have experience how various buildings are put together.

I cant imagine being in the dark w/ smoke and fire and all that gear, and air tank.
Scary shit.
