He was wearing a singlet nothing like today's gear.  Sam is a good geared lifter but not sure if he could even walk out 600.  The mono-lift has ruined the squat almost as much as canvas suits that stand on their own.

Look at Kirk's depth in his squat as well as foot position......the mono lift allows lifters to spread their legs resulting in something that doesn't even resemble what "used" to be a squat....it's impressive to have over 1000lbs on your back, but it ain't the same as a squat.

my two cents

You might want to recheck what Sam has done totally raw...

You really should have a clue before commenting.

As for singlets, they do nothing.  They are not a suit.  Do you know for a fact Kirk was only wearing a singlet?

As for the monolift and the width of a squat, check Ed Coan's squats off of a rack.  He goes quite wide.

he also squated 750 without equipment using that same stance without ever trainning 1rm

You know this because?

Tom never claimed a 750 lbs single to my knowledge.

Tom was a great squatter with huge quads.

So everyone knows, Kirk was wearing a Suit in that squat vid it is a older Titan suit. Still not as advance as todays suits but he still had one on.

I am pretty damn sure no one has squatted a Grand Raw yet. Well just looked it up and the biggest RAW sqaut was done by Mark Henry at 948 pounds on 7/16/1995 in Wilkes Barre Scranton. So that lets all of you know for a FACT that Kirk had on a suit :)

My 2 cents :)   Wolfy!!!!

How about powerlifter/bodybuilder Sam Byrd doing 1050 lbs at 198 lbs this weekend at Louie Simmons' Powerstation Pro meet?

http://www.powerliftingwatch.com/node/5761

He is a FUCKING BEAST!

There was some incredible lifting done at the meet.  It was awesome to be there!

Strong as hell.

Not even close to legal depth.

Regarding stance width... Are you suggesting it's possible to set up as wide with a regular rack as it is with a monolift?   ::)

You don't need to pause in the squat in any federation?

It was not high.  I witnessed it personally from the front row.

I say it was.

I'll bet you $1000 right here, right now, if you can find me a pic or a video showing Byrd being below parallell with his hip joint.

I would have to add Shane Hamman's drugtested 1008 lbs @23 yrs old to that list.

Together with Wade Hooper, he's my favorite squatter.

BTW, this is legit depth. 8)

this is the point.

IF he actually competed and judged meets as he said he did then he would most definitely know that you don't need to pause at the bottom of the lift.

i never said you needed to...i made a statement that he didn't pause, which makes the weight much easier to press with that style of suit on.

i'm just used to judging REAL squats and most lifters pause in the USAPL. most lifters ask me to give them a press command when they get deep enough for the lift to pass.

Just to give you an idea, he has done just over 1100 lbs equipped if my memory serves.  He illustrates quite well that you have to be incredible strong to squat over 1000 lbs even if equipped to the gills.

Hedge, what is "legit depth" is determined by the organization in which you are competing.  You know that.

worse

it came out of that now defunct vince mcmahon wbf bullshit.

they held a squat off comp between dr squat, fred hatfield and tom in response to ifbb athletes, zuccoloto and quinn's curl fest. they selected a maximum lift and reps comp.

surpise suprise, tom won the reps part, fred won the max and it was subsequently declared a draw (like quinn and zuke).

excactly the same concept as the ifbb event, the weights were nowhere near that of the claims and tom's previously claimed max of 600 oddlbs whilst in his peak was bettered by over 100lbs despite being nowhere near the same condition or size he was when he did 600lbs.

same with fred. he was also long retired and looked like a different person in terms of comparison with his peak (when he squatted the world record of the time).

Hedge, what is "legit depth" is determined by the organization in which you are competing.  You know that.

This is the rules of the IPA, the federation that sanctioned the meet.

http://www.ipapower.com/rules.htm

 3. The lifter must bend the knees and lower the body until the top of the thigh at the hip, NOT the hip joint, is lower than the top of the kneecap.

The top of thigh at the hip was clearly not lower than the top of the kneecap at anytime of the lift.

Ie, Byrd shouldn't even get white's in this federation.

Byrd's raw squat to legit depth is much more impressive IMO. This BS "squat", with 24 hour weigh in, 2.5 meter wraps, briefs, multilayer canvas suits, monolifts and what not, it's impossible to compare him to guys who's done real squats in the 198 lbs division.

Which is a real shame IMO.

Would be interesting to see him pitted against the best results alltime in 198 or 220.

yes it would, and it would be interesting to get vid/pics of their depth too.

depth has always been an issue with world record squats. if you think byrd's squat was short, ever see footage of hatfield's 1000?

i've seen many big squats that get passed that are shorter than that one.
