There were a lot of reasons the war happened.  It keeps opium flowing, it sets up an attack base for Iraq.  It allows the US to 'squeeze' Iran.  The US gets access to the trillions of dollars in oil in the Caspian sea.  The USA gets to give money to defense contractors.

Is the US quality of life higher now since the events of 9.11?  Sure.  Was any of that moral?  Hell no.  I would rather have my quality of life suffer than hurt my fellow man.  I would sooner die than steal from someone else to live.

I'm against the war and the troops are the spokes in the wheel which allow the war to continue, so by logic, I need to be against the troops too.

But I would prefer a civilized debate.  Rather than simply "your [sic] an idiot for not following the status quo" and other comments like that.

But I agree, this is not the most appropriate time and place.  I admire Jason for being able to move on despite what happened to him.  I'm sure my opinions would be better received in a separate thread.

A lot of people in Canada and Europe feel the same way that you do, and even in the US, George Bush's supporters are no greater than 30-35% of the population and probably even less than that.  I think the thing about this thread is that people want to support their fellow getbigger and would also prefer to depersonalize the war by blaming the government rather than the soldiers.  I understand their point of view, although I still hold the soldiers accountable.  I do feel sorry for the many poor people who become soldiers not because it's what they believe in, but because they have no other choice.
